Tom, your present was the washer and dryer. Mely, I have a blue toilet and two blue sinks for you.
Mike, your painting looks spectacular in my dining room. Now I just need about four more. Funny, but my dining rooms looks almost exactly like yours used to only in blue. Did you guys list the house right by Mom and Dad's?
Sean and I had a nice trip up to Whittemore on Sat. Very relaxing.
Happy Birthday Tom and Mely One is sweet and the other is smelly To the kind one - thanks for being so sweet To the smelly one - don't worry, it's only your feet
Tom, Happy Birthday from one gentleman to another. Hope you have a great day and may this next year bring much success and happiness to you and your family.
Happy Birthday Mely! I hope that you too have a wonderful day and a great year.
Jude got his flu shot on Saturday. His pediatrician's office has a walk in free for all a few saturdays. Last year we waited down the hall for almost 2 hours. This year we got right in.
Happy Birthday to TOm and Melly! Mely I am so sorry you are still having headaches. I thought they were getting better.
Right now Mary Laurel is telling me that I need to make promises real... so I had better go find the froggy book they like and that I promised I would find.
Did you know that a blue or green dining room will make you eat less?
Congratulations to all the Oct birthday people. Uncanny how one month managed to produce so many great persons through the years. Must somehow be related to the harvest time of year. Not hearing much out of Edwards these days. Iowa is charging sales tax on pumpkins this year IF they are purchased for carving. No tax if they are purchased to be eaten. Indiana used to restrict fireworks and to get the good ones you had to sign a document where you stated they would not be fired off in Indiana... Football Friday Nite---on Wednesday! Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears, undefeated (9-0) District Champs, host the Newell-Fonda Mustangs! The NF line averages @ 270 and they like to run 2nd back through up the middle, O-line double teaming the D-tackles! Joe 4 will have a quarter ton or more of Mustang filth hitting him most plays! First Round of the Playoffs! 7PM! Podcast at myinfocentral.com!
Thanks for all the Birthday wishes. It being my 45th birthday I felt compelled to do a little shopping. So I embarked on a spree to get a Corvette, a new leather jacket, and some bling (gold chains, bracelet and pinkie ring). I couldn't afford any of it so instead I got real drunk and enjoyed a day at a public park - stumbling around and asking people for money. Then I took a nap. It was a nice day.
Just kidding. Had a nice little party at the house. Eli picked out my cake. He thought it was so funny to get his dad a "Hello Kitty" Cake. I enjoyed opening the cards and gifts. Then I settled in and watched the debate where I got another present. It was Hillary being exposed as the duplicitous thing she is by way of her answer right towards the end of the debate. Anyone else catch that? Edwards did and called her out on it. It was great.
Mely - Did you know that we share our birthday with Grace Slick? That's cool, huh? So sorry to hear about your headaches. I hope they go away.
I made Tom a turkey dinner, last night. Yum. :-) Liam picked out BIG "45" candles. Eli picked out "trick" candles. Eli got him a card that had a baby w/ a pacifer on it and it said, "It's your B-Day...suck it up." Liam got him a card w/ a baby and it said "Happy B-Day...you're still sweet and sassy." Of course, I got him a, "You're great and I love you," card. :-) My parents gave him a card w/ money (usually they get a gift) and they said he CAN'T pay bills w/it...he MUST use it for himself. The boys and I got him a D.Trump book that's entitled with something like, "Think Big and Kick Ass." We got him a, "JackAss 2," DVD. We also got him a Giant Hershey/Almond bar...for his Ass. So...it was sort of an, "Ass," theme...of course the boys say, "butt." Ha, ha, ha.
It hasn't happened yet, but Joe, Mary Ellan and Mike are working on it.
Hopefully Linda Jensen is not her own evil twin and is free to sell her property, and hopefully we can get a survey that actually gives us a property line that is not open at one end. And hopefully you are all praying that we can get this solved soon. The Jayjacks have been more than gracious. And like Maureen O'Hara in the Quiet Man, I would like my things about me.
Happy Halloween, everyone. Mary is going as Bat Girl (she's brilliant, says Mary) and Emma is going as Rapunzel, she has a long blonde braid down to her feet.
Joe3, I think the number of October birthdays has more to do with the cold, dark days of January/February than the harvest.
Ellen Jayjack, what other costumes have you invented besides Hamburgler? This morning we helped outfit Randy as "Gone Fishing." We were going to fix him up as Red Green but were stymied by the suspenders (we had to work fast.) His firm really dresses up every Halloween. He said last year a seventy-something partner (male) came as the tooth fairy, complete with tutu and wings.
This is drug and alcohol awareness week or whatever at St. Albert's. At the high school the Grim Reaper is going to hand out black T-shirts to a certain percentage of students and then they can't talk all day. They will represent the number of students who die each year from drugs or alcohol abuse. Pretty cool.
Cathy said, "Joe3, I think the number of October birthdays has more to do with the cold, dark days of January/February than the harvest." As the Mother of an October baby and a former resident of Duluth, Minnesota, I say, "Yahhhhhhhh."
Tom - I watched the debate but I only watched it. I was on the phone and so had the sound turned down. I dont' think that I could live with 4 years of John Edward's facial expressions.
I did watch some of the commentary after the debate. I guess Hillary had said that she supported a position to allow illegal immagrants to get a dirver's license but would not endorse that view. What ever that means.
I didn't see the debate...sounds like Obama did ok...but sometimes bad press is better than no press. He's tied with Hillary now in Iowa and Edwards is slipping.
Everyone who may have kids trick or treating, first go to the sex offender registry website so that your kids won't be knocking on any pedophiles' doors. I entered my address and was shocked to see the map light up like a christmas tree with all the sex offenders in the area. THere's a rapist im my building. Lovely. I checked ALgona and there's a sex offender who lives on Wooster.
I agree with Ed about Edward's facial expressions. He just does not come off as sincere to me. He may be very sincere but it just seems like he tries too hard. However, having suffered 8 years of Bushisms and dopey face, I can handle just about anything.
I think Linda Jensen is her own evil twin. I didn't invent the Hamburgler, but it was a good costume. Last year I was a cow once and Little Red Riding Hood and Andy was the wolf dressed as grandma. The year before that I was a homewrecker. The year before that I tried to be a colorful fairy but just ended up looking like a fairty on crack. It was a bad costume. I think I'm going to be a magic trick gone wrong tonight.
If you're a young teenager trick-or-treating and you're just too cool to wear a costume, I think you should at least not trick-or-treat with your cell phone glued to your ear and hold up a "wait a second" finger when the nice lady of the house opens the door.
That's AWESOME> Maybe that was part of the costume. He was being a surly teenager. Yeah, we have several who come through around 8:30 or so and some of them are so big I'm afraid to open the door on a dark night. Like, they are the size of young Joe. P
Very uneventful...we had like 7 groups of trick-or-treaters...maybe. I think this was Eli's last year...he had to be coerced, a bit, to go once the evening came around. Next year, Liam can go with my friends' (neighbor) little boy...if Liam still wants to and I suspect (hope) he will. My Dad, Tom and the boys went to the Garrigan game...they ALL had Garrigan "wear" on...chilly night, but fun! :-) Disappointing...Eli said that a kid (6th grade) was playing football, with all of them, and he didn't like it that Eli tackled him...in return, he "laid out" Eli (Eli said the kid was heavy and he heard his shoulder crack, but he took it) and then, the kid called him a F***in' A**H*** and took after him. I asked Eli what he did in response and Eli said, "I ignored him and walked away." Good boy. Liam said, "Yeah, and some girl gave me the bird!" I asked him what he did and he said ignored her & when he was done w/ football...hung out with Charles Berte, Savannah Rahm and Gracie Behr. Hmm...disappointing.
We always get lots of trick-or-treaters. The phone teen was a girl. I'm always afraid I'm going to run out of candy, but then there's always just a little bit left to munch on for a few days. So I only buy candy I like. We had lots of nice crunchy leaves for the kids to wade through, even though I swept the sidewalks earlier. Emma and Mary want to roast their pumpkin seeds so I think they'll do that tonight. I always thought they felt and tasted a lot like chewing on salted wood pulp.
I had to forece Tom to go too. Couldn't leave him home alone to answer the door as everyone else was off doing better things. Xavier lost althugh they put up a really good fight. The scor went back and forth by about three points for the whole game but they lost in the last two minutes.
So because ISU is a science and research university, there is a big push to make undergrads do more with research studies this year. So I'm going to do a presentation on a study called "Age constraints on first versus second language acquisition:Evidence for linguistic plasticity and epigenesist” But, the presentations can only last five minutes. So I have four power point slides basically saying you have to learn a first language well before you learn second language when you're an adult- DUH! Is this really good research? Does my five min. presentation actually help me learn more about research studies? It's funny.
Great Garrigan game last night... I didn't see Liam and Eli...but Nance, the good news is that there are sooo many kids playing....there are always a few bad seeds. Joe's para-legal Teri and Kelly S. and Mike, Mom and Dad and I all sat together...it was a GREAT game.
I watched Joe4's rehearsal of Bye Bye Byrdie yesterday...He was really good...he's a sort of Elvis character, he pulls it off really well and sand 3 solos!
I just spoke to Mary and she said the announcer of the game would say, "See another side of Joe Straub this weekend at the production of Bye Bye Birdie!" Or something like that.
Oh yah, I know about the bad seeds...just icky & disconcerting to think that someone called my baby a F***in' A***H*** (& took off after him) and gave the other one the birdie. My goodness...they're only 8 and 11...hmm, I sound OLD. :-<> Ha! :-)
Happy first day of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) everybody!
"National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30."
www.nanowrimo.org/eng/whatisnano
I will give anybody that actually writes a 175-page novel by midnight on November 30 a free year's subscripton to The Des Moines Register.
It has to have a plot and it has to make me laugh or cry at least twice. Good luck.
Urgent - have been unable to reach knowledgeable parties - what times and nights is Bye-bye Birdie playing this weekend? Hoping to make a big circuit and catch both performance and tailgating if possible.
Of course, that means the washer won't get fixed this weekend....
Creighton opened its exhibition season last night playing he EA Allstars. The new Kover kid hit two long 3 pointers and a red shirt freshman from Ida Grove (Harriman) looked good and the stud freshman from Las Vegas (Stinett) looked good too.
Joe said he will be glad when the musical is over so he can just concentrate on football. I asked him why he loves football so much. He said it is fun to hit people.
I tried googling this question and couldn't come up with an answer for our state. Here it is: What is the legal age to babysit in Iowa and what ages/how many can a babysitter care for?
Check with Betty or call the Iowa State Ext. office on Hwy. 18. She just finished a six hour hour baby sitting class. I really don't see how the state can regulate simple baby sitting. I don't think there are any actual laws about such a thing. It's a judgment by the parents. Daycare, sure, but not baby sitting. I do know that to take the class the girls had to be 11. There are lots of 11 year old girls out there sitting.
It's one of those deals where everyone does it and everyone knows it, but if you leave a 10-year-old in charge for 20 minutes and there's a fire, DHS will take your kids away.
At this time, Cathy and I, Molly, Catie and Mia, and Brian (if he does not have to work) are all planning to go to Ames Sat morning for an early tail-gate at Ellen's place and then continue on to Algona to see Joe IV in Bye-Bye Birdie Sat night. We will all have air horns and a big banner that says "GO JOE" that we plan to wave about every time we see Joe IV on stage. Of course, Catie and Mia will also have Pom-Poms. The Milbraths are also interested in coming up to Algona to see the Musical and I think also to Ames for the tail-gate but I'm not sure what they have decided yet. So there might be a large contingent coming to see Bye-Bye Birdie. If anyone up there wants to go with us to see the Musical you are sure welcome and we would love to have you go with us if you have not already seen it or even if you have. Just be sure to bring your air horns and/or Pom-Poms.
Ed X, I have just confirmed with Ellen that the tail-gate will be at her apartment so I guess it is really a patio-gate. All are welcome and it will start about 10:30 or 11:00 AM.
Bob, when we talked a few days ago I said that we would not be going to Ames on Sat as we would be helping Lisa and Randy move but as you can see that has all changed and we will be going so we hope to see you and everybody else there. Have you made plans with Joe3 or anyone else about a tail-gate yet? Ellen said all are welcome. Her phone # is 402-714-7498 to get directions.
If you are babysitting fewer than six children in your home you don't have to be a registered child-care provider and there are apparently no regulations that apply to casual babysitters. Ellen probably knows about this stuff because she works for a place that provides compliance assistance and referrals for child care providers and parents. I bet there's no legal minimum age.
Oh Oh oH, go to www.google.com/trends. You can type in anything and it tells you what cities and countries most search that phrase. Titonka, IA searches for 'Algona' the most and LA has the most searches for 'killer dog', followed by Atlanta
The Ia State Extension has to be the most underutilized, valuable free information agency in the world. The next time I want to know what's eating my hostas and what to do about it, I'll go to them. If I want to know about what chemicals are in my home environment, I'll go to them. If I want statistics about corn production and use in the food chain, I'll go to them. Yay, Extension, you go, babes.
Ellen~ That makes sense...'cuz Google had information (laws) about other states and I wasn't sure, "why," I couldn't pull up anything about Iowa/Minnesota...now I know Thanks. :-)
I don't want to jinx us, but Scott has applied for a criminal investigator position in the Twin Citites. It's still with the State Dept., so he wouldn't lose any of his built up benefits, but it's a move from foreign service to civil service, so no more moving overseas. Ideally, we'd like to do one more overseas tour and then settle down, but this position popped up and we had to jump at the chance. He is one of just a few being considered for the position, so keep your fingers crossed.
This is how I end my week. The "dialogue" at the end.
Dear Hamline community,
We have learned of a disturbing incident we believe involves several of our Hamline students. Photographs of students who appear to be dressed as African tribesmen with their bodies and faces painted black and with a derogatory caption have been brought to our attention.
We have met with most of the students we believe to be involved, and an investigation is underway which will determine whether there will be a judiciary hearing regarding their actions. If you have further knowledge of this incident, we ask that you speak to someone in the Dean of Students, Residential Life, or Safety and Security Offices.
There has been a determination that through their actions the students failed to meet the ethical code of conduct standards expected by student athletes, and therefore they have been suspended from their athletic and co-curricular teams.
While racism, ignorance, and intolerance indeed exist in society today, and we cannot control the actions of everyone in our community, it is important that we respond. We are working to be a dynamic and actively inclusive community. We are--and throughout history have been-- a diverse community of learners dedicated to creating an environment free of harassment and discrimination. This incident re-doubles our commitment and conviction to ensuring that Hamline is a welcoming environment, infused with respect for differences and diversity.
Today at 3:30 p.m. we will have an open forum and dialogue on Old Main Mall. I encourage you to join us there as we talk about this issue as a teachable moment, hear from many voices, and take a first step toward healing any divides in our community.

Happy Birthday Mely and Tom!
Tom, your present was the washer and dryer. Mely, I have a blue toilet and two blue sinks for you.
Mike, your painting looks spectacular in my dining room. Now I just need about four more. Funny,
but my dining rooms looks almost exactly like yours used to only in blue. Did you guys list the house right by Mom and Dad's?
Sean and I had a nice trip up to Whittemore on Sat. Very relaxing.
My dear wife happy birthday. May your headaches go away.

Cumpleanos felices, Tom! Puede no usted nunca ser molestado, pero siempre ser hecho feliz, por monstruos peludos.
For some language fun, go to an online translator and translate things back and forth for a while.
Mia calls that painting the Richardsons have Fire Mike.
Tom, Happy Birthday from one gentleman to another. Hope you have a great day and may this next year bring much success and happiness to you and your family.
Happy Birthday Mely! I hope that you too have a wonderful day and a great year.
I'm gonna buy (more) Halloween candy today...do you think it's too early?
In honor of the birthdays, I just had an hour massage.

In honor of your birthdays, I'm going to rake leaves.
Get your flu shots!
Betty just got her flu shot--less than half an hour ago--along with her well child check. :-)

Oh and the 6th Annual October B-Day Party (four B-Days!) is this Sunday and so I saved Tom and Eli's cards from Mary and Joe...for that day. :-)
Mely, my Mom is gonna put your head on her prayer chain. I'm so sorry your headaches have returned. :-(
Ok
Here's the story on our move.
It hasn't happened yet, but Joe, Mary Ellan and Mike are working on it.

Yes, we will pray that all works well for your move.
Joe3, I think the number of October birthdays has more to do with the cold, dark days of January/February than the harvest.

i like to dress up as the grim reaper and hang around outside retirement communities at dusk... not for halloween, just because it's fun.

Because of all the coffin!

Urgent - have been unable to reach knowledgeable parties - what times and nights is Bye-bye Birdie playing this weekend? Hoping to make a big circuit and catch both performance and tailgating if possible.
Of course, that means the washer won't get fixed this weekend....
tailgating where?
Creighton opened its exhibition season last night playing he EA Allstars. The new Kover kid hit two long 3 pointers and a red shirt freshman from Ida Grove (Harriman) looked good and the stud freshman from Las Vegas (Stinett) looked good too.
They open the season against DePaul on Nov. 7.
Link to info on the musical...starts at 7:30 both Friday and Saturday nights.

Joe said he will be glad when the musical is over so he can just concentrate on football. I asked him why he loves football so much. He said it is fun to hit people.
Joe3 - I'm up to your challenge...
"The Tom Straub Story - One Humble Man's Heroic Achievements"

Does anyone know Lisa's new email address? Lisa...you there? :-)
Tom,
Yes, obviously fiction.

How 'bout "A Man, A Cheeto and A Great Dane - The Story or The World's Most Tragic Love Triangle"
This one would be about Bryce. Just to clarify.

I'm laughing and crying already.
Who's all going to Joe's play and on which night?
Oh, there were boys in the class too!!
I googled legal age babysitting laws and they definitley have them...I just couldn't find them for Iowa nor Minnesota. Thanks.
Eli said that Joe4 did an awesome job (play) and that he was an, "Elvis-like," character. Eli, once again, was VERY proud to be his cousin. :-)
No babysitting laws in Iowa, unless you are talking about in-home day cares. That's a different story. Good luck Joe4 at Bye Bye Birdie!
BTW, I didn't say the name of the report I looked at because I don't know how to pronounce epigenesist. I put it on a power point slide.
Em, fingers, toes, and eyes crossed for Scott.
I search a lot with Dogpile. I just like Yahoo for my homepage.
Emily, would the job it the cities be one where you would stay there for a while?
Yes, it's a permanent position, so we'd be there for the long haul. If we get it, I'm looking forward to buying a house.
30 days?
Ellen - I looked at the google sight you mentioned and am a bit worried to be living in the town with the 4th most searches for "pipe bomb".
Ed, are you coming to the patio-gate?
Deer and slugs eat hostas.
Kill the slugs with little empty tuna tins filled with beer. And no, I'm not kidding. Kill the deer with guns or cars.
