In the Vonage postgame report on nbc.com, they reported that the students booed Charlie as he walked off the field. Charlie said that the reason they didn't go for the field goal at the end of the 4th Q was because, Walker couldn't make it from tht distance going into the wind in practice, but I'm still not satisfied.

Des, you must be pleased with the performance of your alma mater.

Bye, Bye, Birdie...was a hit!
Joe4 was awesome as Conrad Birdie! I guess we can chalk "acting" up as another one of young Joe's many talents. :-)
Joe had wonderful stage presence and his body language/facial expressions brought me back to the day when I jumped up and down for Corey Hart! Ha, ha. Eli laughed aloud and clapped, after many of Joe's lines, as he found Joey's charisma and over the top ego a comic delight.
Joey was humble and gracious, in the reception line, and we are all so proud of him. I couldn't be more thrilled that our young boys have such a positive role model...on so many levels. Kudos to you, Joe Straub IV! :-)

I tried the illusion trick and the face of Gilda Radner appeared on the ceiling of my hotel room. Now I see her wherever I go. I think she's trying to tell me something from beyond.

Even though I went to school at KU I have officially vowed never to be a Jayhawk football fan. My freshman year, they were actually pretty good. Glen Mason was the coach and they had two future pro bowlers on their defensive line. The stadium was sold out a couple of times (which was unheard of for Kansas). But the minute they lost a couple games, people stopped showing up. My sophomore and junior years were spent alone in the stands. It was pathetic. So I stopped going. That was a kind of fair weather move on my part but whatever.

While watching the KU NU game yesterday, I witnessed the same thing. 50,000 screaming fans who will magically vanish once Mangino loses a couple. Because at KU football is just something fun to do. But when it becomes hard to watch, people would rather organize go to the Chi Omega Hay Rack Ride Date Dash than watch their team lose. Football just isn't in the culture there and that has always been their problem. It's not like Notre Dame, Nebraska, Michigan or Tennessee, Texas or Ohio State. Heck, it's not even Purdue. KU football is like The Apprentice. For one season, it was really good. The next, nobody watched.

That said, I'm pulling for KU to win the Big 12 and play for the NC. They're the good guys as far as I'm concerned. We'll see. They never fail to disappoint. And when they do, you can bet people will start watching basketball.

What's that, Gilda? She says it's time to stop typing start watching television. Must go. Talk to you later.

I've never had a flu shot and neither have my kids. Is that bad? Should they get one?
Congrats to J4! You got some rave reviews.
For Halloween the boys were both skeletons and Braden was a rocked out kitty with bejeweled and fringed accessories. And pink spiky hair. It was fun. Ty does a great skeleton dance.
Football is finally over, except for the banquets. Zane got a trophy and a plaque for good grades. If they get straight A's for five years while participating in JFL they get a Presidential All American trophy. Awesome. Ty's trophy will be a bobble head (his banquet is Wednesday).

We've never had flu shots either. However, I am certain that I had (boys too?)influenza, last winter. I was so darn sick...it was scary. We are definitely getting the flu shot this year.
The Ortega kids sure sound cute...oh and scary! Congratulations to Zane on a job well done. :-)

Sorry joe, really wish I could have seen you. Totally cool you did the musical.

OK, we lowered the price of our house again, and had two showings and one open house this weekend. cross you fingers. We're at 219 and it was assessed at 239.

The 6th Annual October Birthday Party was a hit. Granny and Grandpa brought over Hungarian Stew (G'pa calls it goulash) and it was soooooooooo wonderful. :-) The sound went out on the TV...which was fine. Conrad Birdie came over and signed autographs. :-) We watched the Venus Fly Trap (from Kelli/kids to Eli) eat the biggest fly I've EVER seen...that happened to be hanging out in our kitchen...great. :-( Mike and Mary popped over, when they got back to town, and that was really nice. :-) The boys went to bed dirty, full and late...in preparation for college.

We were at the ND game, and for the overtime part we moved and sat behind the student section...THERE WAS NO BOOING!!!...It was Mike and I and the Kennedy's...Ellen was in the student section with Caitlin and her roommate, they were on TV!

Bye Bye Birdie was so much fun! Joe was amazing... he may have to do an encore of his hip twisting extravaganza for all of you who missed it... or at the very least, you can see it on the recordings Steve Jayjack and Dad made.

It was a wonderfully restful weekend. Thanks, Mom and Dad!

The LaVelles and Kennedys sound like they had a fun time!

Anonymous said...

Why 2 goats? Why not 1 or 3?

Ed X said...

What time is the Garrigan game today?

Two goats is what it costs. Not sure how Akash Bhairab comes up with his prices.

Anonymous said...

Mary, how come you and Mike and the Kennedys were booing?

I heard a doc on TV saying the flu shots could help your kids not get that staph infection that's scaring everyone, but I don't know if he just meant that if you have the flu your immunity in general is lowered and he just thinks everyone should get one. St. Alberts sent a note home saying a kid at the high school has stasph, but they didn't know yet what strain.

On our drive up to Whittemore, Mia asked me out of the blue if I had any cavities. I said, "I don't have any cavities right now, but I have fillings." and she cocked her head to the side and said with a sympathetic look, "About what?"

Game time is 7 pm. You can hear at myinfocentral.com

Yesterday in practice they had Joe playing center. He usually does not play on the O-line much less center. But I guess West Hancock (Britt) has moved some monster to nose tackle so the coach has Joe at center.

The usual starter is a senior but is undersized so they had Joe in there. The person playing nose tackle on the defensive practice squad is the normal second string center - and he was pissed that they didn't have him starting at center because he has good size. This guy was going hard at Joe - too hard as it turns out. Joe hurt his knee. However, it sounds okay - more like he strained it slightly.

I question why they had these guys going full contact the day before a game - but I'm no coach.

caught the last 11 minutes of Joe's game on the net. bummer on the loss, but Joe seemed to get mentioned about every 3rd defensive play or so...

Garrigan lost our QB right before the half. That was a tough loss. Joe was named the ProAdvantage Player of the Game. He recovered a fumble last night too. He told me this morning that he wishes football wasn't over. He sure loves to hit people! The juniors and seniors are off to the Mall of America today as a reward for calendar sales this year. Good timing...they all need to go have some fun and relax after a great season.
Man, it was cold out there last night. The all day wind we had let up a little before the game, but not all the way--I heard a few people saw snow flurries before the game!!

I bet it was freezing. I was going to say Joe made about every third tackle but Frank beat me to it. That Horseman is a horse. He was playing defense too, wasn't he? I'm sure I heard that a tackle was made by Horseman when Garrigan had possession. But congrats to Joe and the whole team on a great season. He sings, he dances, he crushes and smashes....

I dug up a clump of Italian parsley last night during time outs to bring in for the winter...it looked all vigorous and bushy last night but this morning it was lying on the floor. I think I waited one night too long. I'm thinking I could cut it back hard and see what happens, but that won't leave it any leaves for photosynthesis. Any opinions?

It certainly IS Hungarian goulash and NOT Hungarian stew. True Hungarian goulash is made with cubes of beef cooked all day in beef boullion and minced onions flavored with paprika and served over egg noodles. In this country they have stolen the name "goulash" and applied it to an unsavory shortcut meal made out of elbow macaroni, hamburger and tomato juice and cooked for a few minutes. They should not be mentioned in the same breath and I wish cookbook editores would find another word for the shortcut meal.
The football game was a shame. In the first quarter Britt was winning the field position battle. Then Joe recovered a fumble near midgield which led to a GHS touchdown. We missed the extra point. Then a GHS fumble set up a short drive Britt TD. There was only less than a minute left in the first half when we took the kickoff and started a drive. On a pass play our quarterback had to scramble and he headed to the sideline to get out of bounds and stop the clock. He was hit out of bounds on a flagrantly dirty play and Britt got a 15 yard penalty. Our QB was knocked out and helped to the lockerroom. Our backup QB was injured in the last game and could not play. Our tailback moved to QB. He did a nice job there as a JV quarterback 2 or 3 years ago but I don't know how much practice, if any, he has had there in the last 4 days. The first half ended and I was very confident of a win. All season long we have played better the second half. In the first game against Britt they led 12-0 and the half and we beat them 27-18. What I did not know last night is that our QB suffered a concussion on the dirty play and was done for the night. Our tailback, now at QB, had a very tough 2nd half. He fumbled a couple of snaps, there was at least one fumble by the new tailback after a messed up handoff as well as an interception. Britt got 2 more touchdowns after the turnovers which were mostly deep in our own territory. I really feel we are the better team and it's disgusting to lose a game as the result of a flagrant foul. It's almost as bad as calling the elbow macaroni dish goulash. Joe played very well and was very intense firing up his teammates on the sideline and on the field. As we used to say when the Dodgers were in Brooklyn, "Wait till next year." Dad

Anonymous said...

Hee, hee...I knew that would get yah goin'! :-<> :-)

Anonymous said...

I just want to add a few words about the tailback who was moved to QB. His name is D.J. Thompson and he's a nice kid who has been a friend of Joe's since grade school. In fact, his grandparents do not live close by so when he was in 5th or 6th grade he sort of adopted me to be his Grandpa. He's had a wonderful year at tailback and is also a very good linebacker so it is too bad that he had to end his high school career on that note. Speaking of linebacker, for a couple of seties on defense the coach put Shane Koob (Steve McCall's grandson) in at Joe's tackle position and move Joe to one of the inside linebacker spots. I think the regular linebacker had a minor injury and they just wanted to check him out on the sideline. I haven't had a chance to ask Jow what that felt like. By the way, I reread my previous comment and it is obvious I did not proofread it before I sent it. Likewise with this one. Dad

It's sort of a throwback experience to gather around the old Hewlett-Packard and listen to a game instead of watch it. In honor of the event, we had a 50's dinner of meat loaf, baked potatoes, canned green beans and canned peach halves. Yummy. There was one point in the first half, when Joe recovered the fumble I think, that was very exciting, and the announcer with the deeper, sort of laconic voice said in his almost-monotone, "That was so incredible I almost can't describe it." and we all burst out laughing. But I didn't have the impression that anyone was blaming Thompson, it was obvious that they would have trouble with snaps and handoffs.
By the way, I love Hungarian goulash, but the macaroni-ground beef-tomato dish is one of my all-time faves. I propose we call it ungoulash, or maybe ubergoulash. Macaroulash, anyone?

Oh, by the way, "Wait till next year" is practically the official mantra of Cubs fans.

Congratulaations to Joe IV and the entire Garrigan football team for a great season. Joe IV, we heard your name mentioned many times during the game and felt proud to be related to you (even more so than when we saw you in a dress). If games could be won by the size of one's heart and amount of effort, then last night would have been chalked up as a victory.

gou·lash (gläsh, -lsh)
n.
1. A STEW of beef or veal and vegetables, seasoned mainly with paprika.
2. A mixture of many different elements; a hodgepodge.

Anonymous said...

Of course I meant the whole team was playing their heart out and contributing a great amount of effort (especially the guys who had to change positions}, but Joe IV was sure bust'n his behind out there.

YAY! This just came out in the Hamline newsletter:

GLS Assistant Dean Pat Straub Moving On
With great appreciation for her years of service to GLS, I’d like to announce that Patricia Straub, our assistant dean, is leaving her position on December 15, 2007, to move with her husband to Boca Raton, Florida, where he has been offered a new job. Pat has been an important member of the GLS staff and community for nine years and an invaluable part of our leadership team.

Starting as a program assistant, Pat was promoted steadily over the ensuing years, becoming assistant director in 2002 and assistant dean in 2004. During this time she also completed her Master of Arts in liberal studies and did substantial coursework toward an MFA in creative writing. Pat has played a significant role in GLS’ success, providing steady, intelligent, and competent leadership during its transition from program to school. She has been instrumental in the development and success of a number of key initiatives, including GLS’ Summer Writing Workshop; the alumni board; West Egg Literati, GLS’ highly popular student organization; and rock, paper, scissors, a graduate led and designed literary magazine.

There have been few decisions that I have made as dean or new initiatives undertaken without Pat’s input, advice, and support.

Dean Mary Rockcastle asks that you join her and the GLS faculty, staff, students, and alums in thanking Pat for her many contributions to Hamline and wish her well as she moves on to this new chapter in her life.

Kelli - that book Joe was reading didn't happen to be "The Tom Straub Story - A Extraordinary Man's Ascension to Greatness" by Barbara Tuchman, did it?

It's a great read. Except she slightly misrepresented the knife fight with the Crips. There were on 10 of them - not 12.
