Football Friday night! The 5-0, #9 rated Viking horde from Northwood Kensett descends on 5-0, #2 Garrigan tonight at 7:30! BK average game score so far this year 34-6! A battle of rated teams, Garrigan's 4th of the year! Only 9 undefeated teams left in Class A! BG won last year at NK in a very good game! 2 power running teams! Playoff implications! Winner rules the District! 2 traditions collide! Extra medical staff standing by! Webcast available at myinfocentral.com!
TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 5). You surprise yourself and surpass your own expectations this year. Through the next 10 weeks, you are surrounded by people who push you to excel. By February, you are completely self-motivated. Debts are paid off in the early spring. Summer work allows you to sock away extra money for a dream of yours. Scorpio and Sagittarius adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 7, 2, 54, 35 and 30.
Happy b-day Monica. Hope you had a whole day where neither kids nor husband whined, nagged or bitched. Of course, that indicate snow in the forecast for a very hot, very southern climate.
Thank you for the birthday wishes. We had cherry pie at 6 this morning and opened presents. Joe works this evening so no big plans. Ran some errands today. Mowed a little bit So I was outdoors a little. I can't believe we still need to mow so much.
My nose does look large. Good thing there were no boogers hanging out.
If I stare at your photo long enough, your nose follows me as I walk around the desk!
Garrigan won last night....Joe4 was SUBWAY player of the game! I can't believe Algona has undergound transportation...there's a north Subway entrance and a South one, both sell sandwiches!
The Irish finally one one! I think that after last year and now this year Cathy and Steve should go to ALL future UCLA/ND games.
This was the first time in 3 years that Notre Dame wasn't on TV in Chicago. They showed Purdue/Ohio State instead. I was able to go to a bar and watch it though.
I was in line at Subway, yesterday, and came upon a man and his adult son who liked my ND hat and tee. I said I was, "representing," for my Father-in-law and Brother-in-law. They asked me who they were and, of course knew them. It was "Pickles" Elbert and his son, Lee...we had a nice chat in line. Very nice people. :-)
I've chatted with Pickles at Ampride in Whittemore. He is very nice.
Yesterday's game was so fun. There were lots of ND fans there. As we walked into the stadium we were accompanied by some slightly liquored ND fans who were enthusiastically yelling, "1 and 5!" We were sitting in the ND section and our fans were pretty subdued for the first half, but were downright giddy the second half. I sat behind the habitual high fiver guy, which was actually pretty fun. He pointed out that the IRish are 2 - 0 in the Rose Bowl. The first win took place in 1925. I didn't know the Rose Bowl was that old. The ROse Bowl is a great place to see a game.
harmonica. may your 29th year be merry and filled with bliss, etc. and may you piss when filled with sherry, etc. and be kissed when killed by confetti, etc.
Happy birthday to Joe J., Zane, Bob, Monica and did I miss anyone?
On Saturday Ellen and Andy brought CAtie and Mia over for Mary's birthday... she had a great time.
I did not print off my e-address list before moving, so if anyone w ould like, I would appreciate it if you would send me a message to development2@src.omhcoxmail.com. I am not sure, but MY ADDRESS MAY NOT BE MY OWN. I'LL LET YOU KNOW LATER.
We have had a great time at Emily and Scott's. They have a great apartment with a view of the ocean and it's a nice three-block walk from the pier and a beautiful beach. If anyone's interested in investment properties, a 900-square-foot little 1920's era house in this neighborhood is reduced to $780,000 right now. It's cute. There are a few tiny houses in between all the apartment and condo buildings. The whole town used to be thousands of oil wells until the real estate became more valuable than what was under it. There are still occasional little oil wells in the odd back yard - and the yards are tiny! The climate is perfect - every day you go out the door and just take a deep breath and smile. We went down to the beach again yesterday and watched the surfers. You walk through a pretty little downtown area to get to the beach and about every third shop is a surf-related shop. lots of restaurants (not expensive) all with outdoor seating. Jude went in to nursery school today because it's picture day and then he gets out early and we'll all head to the airport. We've had a wonderful little mini-vacation, Scott and Emily are great hosts, and Notre Dame Won! What a weekend.
When I lived in LA I "scored" a duplex with a front yard about as big as one parking spot. I only had to pay $1200 for it. The weather was so perfect all the time I got sick of it. That and the fact that it took me 2-3 hours to drive home at night after work (when it only took 20 minutes in the morning).
Oh, and the times I could not get home because after locking my car in a choice parking spot only 4 blocks from my house the cops would stop me and all the other pedestrians from entering out neighborhood because they were trying to apprehend someone with a gun who was running amuck (that happened 3 times).
Then there was the time I'm laying on my living room floor and as I peer to the right a cop is tip toe-ing right past my open door about 20 feet from me with his gun drawn.
I liked LA for about a year then got really sick of it.
Last week on "Heros" they had a girl and boy from Guatemala who wanted to get to the US so that they could get help for her. In order to this they needed to cross the river between Mex/Guatemala. They go to the river and it is guarded by tons and tons of uniformed officers and I thought "that's not now they do it. They just need to give some funny looking coins to some guy and he will take them over on an inner tube." But in the show they wera all worried about it and found a tunnel to get across and then the border guards found them and the girl started bleeding black blood from here eyes and somehow this killed everybody that was after them.
Mexican Fiesta Monday was a hit! No shortage on food. How come when you WANNA eat chips & salsa it's always super far away from you and hard to get at. However, when you're on a mega-diet (me) the platter is right in front of your face?! Ha, ha. I WAS able to enjoy them, vicariously, through Mike though...thanks Mike. :-<> :-)
I'm wearing josh's belt today, and he fastens it tighter than i do. I can see the marks near the hole he uses. I tell myself this is because he wears his pants so high and not bc he's skinnier than i am. P
If the captain invited me to his party, after he had whipped me earlier in the day up on the deck, I guess I'd go, but I'd try to find some excuse to leave early.
It's funny that pirates were always going around searching for treasure and they never realized that the real treasure was the fond memories they were creating.
Wednesday: 30 minutes after Tom left for Mason City (to return rented china)...Renee calls me from Sarah's saying, "A pipe burst and bring your shop vac." Click, dial tone. (This is the shop vac we've been walking around for a few weeks, in our garage, and just the day before Tom brought it downstairs.) So, I lug it up and bring it to the restaurant...the "on" switch was broken and we had to hold it and then, tape it down. :-( We squeegyed, sucked and mopped the water that came from the men's bathroom and flowed into the restaurant and bar area. We slopped up as much as we could, then I ran to Hy-Vee to rent a Rug Doctor. The manager, at Hy-Vee, ALMOST didn't rent it to me because she said, "Rug Doctors are not intended to suck up water." What? I explained that it wasn't standing water and that we just needed to detail the carpet. She finally releneted (as if she was doing me some big favor) and I thanked her. Whatever. The cause? Under the sink, in the mens room, we had a closed bottle of Draino next to a closed bottle of bleach and over time the fumes escaped and burned a whole in the pipe...weird. The good news? Renee was just about to walk out the door and lock up, when it burst. Literally, 5 minutes later and the water would have ran into the restaurant for 2 hours before anyone returned. Scary. Honorable mention: Joe3 picked up the boys from school and brought them to Sarah's. Thanks, again, Joe. :-)
Every day is an adventure when you own a restaurant. Sometimes a journey of misery and sometimes an epic of great joys. I'd be happy with a constant of somewhere in between.
Tom...you should write Greeting Cards...the Johnny Depp line, aaargh! When you're about to walk the plank, stop and smell the roses!
Nance...that switch was bad when Mom and Dad tried to use it, cause Mom was holding it on while Dad vacuumed...for about 10 minutes, before they called the pros!
At least it wasn't Mexican Mondays that caused the pipes in the men's room to burst!
(Putting together nametags for Confirmation this Sunday) Nowadays, kids can choose a new Confirmation name, such as a saint they admire or a saint with a funny name, but they can also stick with their baptismal name, the theology being that Confirmation is a confirmation or reiteration of their baptismal vows, while the new name signifies entering into a new relationship with God which in scripture often meant a new name (i.e. Saul/Paul, Simon/Peter, Abram/Abraham). But the funny thing is, the kids that opt to keep their own names are almost always named things like Taylor or Brandon or McZKenzie so those seem weird Confirmation names, while the kids that choose saint names already have "Christian" names. Except for this year, I have a girl named Valencia who chose the name "Leanne". Duh. Her grandmother talked her into choosing "Veronica" instead. The big name this year is Sebastian (patron saint of athletes) followed closely by Albert. Some girls choose a male saint's name but this year, for the first time, a guy chose Mary. All very interesting (probably only to me.)
We had little elbow-length red capes and red beanies. We looked like little cardinals. The bigger kids told us the Bishop really slaps hard. Now that I think about it, the nuns did nothing to disabuse us of this misinformation.
If I could be any kind of dog I think I would be one of those yappy dogs because while you're sitting there on the couch trying to sound real smart, I'm just sitting there yapping away. Just yappin' and yappin' and there's nothing you can do about it because I live here.
Andy has been in New York since Monday morning for a training. It's good because I have gotten a lot of work done, but I have been having whole conversations with the dog. He doesn't even yap back at me, so basically I try am talking out loud to myself and Buddy just goes and naps in the other room. What's even weirder is that Buddy lost a whole toe nail (paw nail?) so I kept it to show to Andy when he gets back. It's gross.
I was thinking "No, their anniversary is way in the fall" and whoa, look, it is fall. Happy Anniversary! I remember 10 years ago waking up to rain falling in buckets and Grace and I smiling ruefully at each other. No outdoor wedding that day. You guys looked beautiful.
Cathy and SteveO, I forgot I to give you the $10 for milk and baby wipes.
We submitted our bids today. All of the most desireable places have 40-50 bidders. (Dublin, Milan, Ljublijana, etc.) Even the less desireable places have 12-13 bids so far. We almost decided to bid on Chennai, India (used to be Madras) because it has only 2 bidders, but in my research, everyone said you get a nasty stomach bug about once a month and that just does not sound like fun. We'll find out in Dec-Jan. I am really hoping for Monterrey,Mexico or Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Happy belated birthday, MOnica and Happy Anniversary Grace and Ryan. I really can't believe it's been ten years.
Tomorrow is OCTOBERFEST in Whittemore...lots of kids activities and food and drink...comeone come all! It includes some sort of smackdown wrestling show!! Salsa contest, hayrides...lotsmore.
About KLGA AM and FM and the football games...they take turns between the 2 school. Tonight it's Garrigan on AM1600, and next week (Homecoming) they will be on FM.
2 teams from each football district get into the playoffs. In the event of a tie, the first tiebreaker is head-to head competition. If that doesn't do it (in the case of a 3-way tie-it's happened) the next tie-breaker is 13 point differential. You take the total margin of victory, or loss, averaged over the didstrict schedule, and you come up with a number. whoever has the highest number wins. To keep teams from running up a score the maximum margin of victory or loss is capped at 13. If there's still a tie they just take whoever is first in the alphabet one year and reverse order the next. What was significant about Garrigan's win this past week is that they have now beaten each of the likely district contenders head to head and so the differential doesn't come in to play. One event at Octoberfest in Whittemore is a keg toss around 4pm. Tonight the Bears take on SCMT (Sheffield Chapin Meservey Thornton, which in a couple years will combine with Rockwell-Swaledale for a huge acro-name), a 4-3 team the Bears should beat but hey, look a SoCal.The unusual thing is that it's a passing team, a rarity in N Iowa HS football. Joe4 might get a sack or 2. Wbcast on myinfocentral.com.
Sean had his last cross country meet last night. He finished 3.15 miles in 20 min. and 39 seconds. I am astounded. He is the second smallest on the team and beat many of the varsity runners. I believe Xavier is ranked 1st in cross country right now.
Happy Anniversary Grace and Ryan! Someone who graduated from Garrigan just started where I work. Her name is Debbie Kolhhass- I think. She's 19 or 20. I went to a party at my old apartment last night- I know someone who moved in. They decorated my room completely in Spider Man stuff and has a futon on place of the bed. And a recliner in the kitchen, it was odd to see.

Happy birthday to everyone I've neglected to congratulate. This especially includes the incredibly talented and good-looking October babies.

Happy birthday Monica! Hope it is a beautiful day in Robins, Ia and you get to go outside and enjoy it.
Happy Birthday to all the birthdays I have missed so far this month. These Oct. birthdays come at you pretty fast.
Go Bears!
Happy, Happy Birfday, Monica. Dump the kids on Joe and go clubbing with all your homies.
Here's a fairy tale for everyone to pass on to your children...
Once upon a time, long, long ago there was a woman who never whined, nagged or bitched.
But, it was a long time ago and it was only for one day.
THE END.

Ed...a tunnel under that river? Isn't that the one we all crossed on a raft (while in Chiapas for Pete and Mely's wedding)...I don't like that show.
What happened with drawing names for Christmas?
Mmmmm, chips and salsa. I want some of Mely's quacamole.
You can get Tom's next Monday!
I'llmakeyousometoday! ha

the inside of my car smells like feet.
Well then get rid of that feet-scented Pine Tree air freshener. They just came out with a pit-scented one.
If the captain invited me to his party, after he had whipped me earlier in the day up on the deck, I guess I'd go, but I'd try to find some excuse to leave early.
Tom
We have a wind chill today. 30 degrees.
p
I'll do the Christmas exchange today.
Do you wanna have a spending limit? $15 or $20? It's fun to spend more, but not everyone has the ability.
I think that $20 sounds nice.
I agree with $20. Lots of late-night TV offers are $19.95. You don't have to count the $30 shipping and handling. And sometimes you get two for one.
and if you go to the dollar store, that's 20 presents.
I hope you don't get my name.
I just bought 4 laundry baskets at the dollar store. What a deal.
Twenty dollars sounds reasonable.
Who is doing Mom and Dad's?
~ crickets ~
I vote for Monica.
me too
Monica would be fantastic at this.
She could sniff out a great deal.
BROTHER JOE SAID HE WOULD DO IT!
Yay Joe! And happy almost birthday.
The inside of my car smells like Spring Meadow.
The inside of our van smells like someone left a malt in the drink holder in the back two years ago. Chocolate Limberger.
Good job Joe!
It's funny that pirates were always going around searching for treasure and they never realized that the real treasure was the fond memories they were creating.

Metro home sales continue their decline.
Sales in September were down 23 percent from a year earlier.
This is very sad. But this week we had three very interested buyers, so everyone think good home sale thoughts.
p
when are you moving?
Immediately after Christmas.
p
I would suspect that people who are looking to buy a home will be making their decision soon so they can get, "in," before the holidays! :-)
Wednesday:
30 minutes after Tom left for Mason City (to return rented china)...Renee calls me from Sarah's saying, "A pipe burst and bring your shop vac." Click, dial tone.
Scary.

Last year a guy chose St. Josemaria Escriva. Try fitting that on a nametag.
Someone inourfamily chose Diego...who was that?
Joe did
we got confirmed in our uniforms in the middle of the school day and then went back to math class. all very special.
Too bad about the water Tom and Nance.
Yes that's a total mess.
Also, thanks Joe.

Did Buddy lose a toenail because he chews on his feet all the time or did he hit it with a hammer?
What's the 13-point differential rule? Quick, before tonight's game.
How does Buddy's nail compare size-wise to Mike LaVelle's tooth?
Cathy and SteveO, I forgot I to give you the $10 for milk and baby wipes.
We submitted our bids today. All of the most desireable places have 40-50 bidders. (Dublin, Milan, Ljublijana, etc.) Even the less desireable places have 12-13 bids so far.
That's awesome. Way to go, Sean! :-)
I currently treadmill .56 miles in 15 minutes. Hmm.
So if it came to the alphabet determining the winner, is it Bishop Garrigan or Algona Garrigan or Garrigan and has it ever come to that?
Good thing you guys practiced for the keg toss.
WAY TO GO SEAN!
Monica, you might break 100!
Congratulations Sean.
Sean that's AWESOME>
YAhoo!

The toenail is about the size of ML's tooth.
