The Princess Betty Cash started her day with breakfast in bed! Her brother gave her the gift of switching bedrooms with her so she now gets the big desk!
Yesterday, Eli made a paper banner, at school, to hold during the Homecoming Parade on Friday. He brought it home to show us. It is so cute. It says Straub across the front, has a huge #71 on it, a bear paw w/ Joey's name and a helmet with a paw and the #71...or, something like that. Additionally, the boys had us go to Diamond's and buy new BGS tee's and then, we went over to Hutzell's and put Straub and the number 71 on the back. They're gonna wear them at the parade w/o a jacket...regardless of the weather (they said). Very sweet.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BETTY! See you at the parade... By the way, for all of you Algonians who would like a seat to watch the parade, we can save you a spot at Algona Realty. ML
Happy Birthday Betty! I bought you a gift this a.m., but now I think I'll keep it for me...it's Dick Dale's greatest hits! He signed it, too! You could have listened to it and played along with it on the keyboard I tried to gift to you yesterday...you politely turned me down ($5 from a garage sale)...So now I have both...thank you...
Betty you light up my day Every time you come into the Realty.. with brightly colored pieces of art you remind of 2 other girls close to my heart! Thank you. Aunt Mary
So. Mom and I went to a coffee this morning in Whittemore (before work)...and Dick Dale, Don Tietz and Brian Thul were all trying to talk to us...it was fun!
I wish I could see the Homecoming parade. But we are going to Illinois to see Ty play football on Friday night and Zane on Saturday. And then up to visit with Stevo's Mom. And then home again so I can start to prepare a 2-HOUR PRESENTATION to the Catechetical Leaders Association of the Des Moines Diocese (CLADD for short)on fully integrated adult learning strategies. Yikes! Why, why, why did I say OK? It's not till November. I have plenty of time. It'll be OK. But I'd much rather stand up in front of 200 parishioners who don't even realize how knowledgeable they are than in front of 30 of my peers who know when you're bullshitting. Any similar experiences? Cooking lesson for a bunch of chefs? Arguing in front of a bunch of lawyers? Showing a bunch of realtors how to sell a house? Sewing up a fellow doctor? (Panic creeping softly in...)
Nance, I copy and pasted your above posting, changed the font, and added color! I will give it to Betty when she gets home!! The font is is a scroll type and it looks very cute! She will love it!
Update for those of you planning to participate in out "live for a week on a food stamp budget" challenge Nov. 11-17: I've been doing some more research and the average daily budget is probably more like $3 a day per person (the benefit varies wildly, but that's what the average is)so we can really live it up. For a family of four, that's $84. No sweat. The benefit is based on # of people in a household, but also on income, and assumes that the household can afford to spend 1/3 of their income on food, so people who are working but below the poverty level are penalized. Anyway, if you're interested in hunger issues go to www.hungernomore.org and start following links - everything from websites for kids to discussions about the farm bill, which is where the food stamp program is administered, God help us.
Happy Birthday Betty! I know you got those perfect teeth from your mom. I wish I could give you a big hug in person, but you'll just have to use your imagination.
Also, belated birthday wishes to Betty's father! Hope you enjoyed your day.
Everyone have fun at the parade. Sounds fun. It's really cute how Eli and Liam look up to Joe IV.
We've got no ideas for baby names. Any suggestions? I want Finn, but Scott won't go along with it. Maybe I can send him out for a latte and do the paperwork while he's gone. Is that mean?
I had to go on TV today and talk about the auction next week.
When I signed in to the TV station, my sweaty palms left a mark on the counter. Just before I went on air, I looked up only to compare my pasty complexion with the strong blonde looks of the host. Yikes! They tell me I did ok. Right.
I wanted the name Gunther. And to call him "Gunner". But we had to name him Joe, of course! And if Betty had been a boy, I wanted Michael Cash. I love the name Mike. Those first grade readers must have left a big impression. Betty had a good birthday. She got to eat frosting on her brownie cake. :-)

Gunner. I don't think I like that. Sorry. Tonight we go to a publication reading - for josh's story (and others in this same book)and then tomorrow we go to Ladysmith, WI for a Wilkes birthday thing (takes place of thanksgiving for that side of his family). A mother bear attacked a bow hunter there a couple days ago. He was strapped to his stand (I don't know how this works) and a cub got in the tree and started crying. He couldn't get out. p
Tom, Guinness and I will be at Algona Realty waving at all the Paraders today! Guinness will be wearing a Garrigan tee...no, I didn't have the #71 screened on it...hope that's okay. :-)
Aiden is a very cute name, but there are probably at least 3 Aidens or Cadens or Bradens in every class, from newborn to 2nd grade. It would be like naming a daughter Kristen or Mackenzie. Also very popular are Jake and Andy, which are both great names.
How about Patrick, Adam, Dylan, Richard (Ricky), Kyler?
Have Scott talk to Joe K. about Finn. He wanted all the boys to be named Finn. If you have another one you could name it Gil.
Thomas starts on his braces adventure next month. Ellen got hers off last month. The dentist kept harping on me about Tom but I just refused to pay for three kids in braces at once. Sean should get his off in the spring.
Liam says he should get his braces first 'cuz his teeth are the worst. The dentist says that Eli needs them soon as his bite is all wrong. I say, "What about getting invisalign when their 30?"
I don't know, but Pat wins the award for the length of time in braces. I think Dr. Baber was a crook. It seems no one wears braces for more than 2-3 years and he had us all in braces for 4 or more years.
Well, I finally got the chance to see Mary and Mike's office and man is it spectacular! High ceilings, great natural lighting, antique bank volt, wonderful colors, amazing artwork, cool/ecclectic furniture & fixtures and...much, much more. A very warm, smart and successful appeal going on. Kudos to the two of you! :-) BTW: Mary, don't forget to harvest those four plants I told you about...anytime...just take 'em.
Hey meidcal people, (Kelli and Joe K.) What's all the hubub with kids' cold medicine? Is it really harmful if given the correct dosage or is it being pulled from shelves because people keep screwing up the dosage? Jude's got a nasty cold and can't breathe out his nose and as he is a thumbsucker, can't sleep very well. I'm thinking of going out and buying a bunch of meds before they're all gone.
Baber was a crook. And mean. I had braces from Sixth grade up through the summer before my senior year, too.
He had a pool. I think Mom and Dad dug it.
And - I really do need information on Homecoming.
How about Gilligan Guilliatt? Some great illiteration there. However, no one would ever know what was his last and what was his first name... Randy has a nephew named Taylor Ryan Christian... Any of those could be the first, middle or last name.
Last night we (Eli, Liam, Betty & I) went on a Halloween Hike through Call Sate Park. We wanted to go the last two years...but, it rained. :-( This year, the weather was perfect. It was a nice deal. We gathered at the shelter house (a way cute log cabin) and while we waited for our turn...we enjoyed hot cider (brought SF cider for Betty), cocoa, popcorn, cookies and coloring. The hike was sweet. Every 40 feet there was a skit and we learned about various animals and their habitats. Scott Larsen (local singer) and his wife did a skit about a toad and his princess. Joe4's girlfriend (& others) did a skit about animals that burrow. Afterwards, we came back for pizza, french silk pie and SF Jell-O. Joe3 joined us. Fun night. :-)
At Conway field the Bears lit up the field...came back after halftime and finished the job...big win...and then a big fireworks show afterthe game! It was a perfect football night. We went to Sarah's sfter, Tom had a live band, the place was packed..it was fun.
Scott left this morning on an overnight trip and said, "I'll be with the Mexican first lady all day and all night so don't call me." I asked, "what if there is an emergency?" And he told me to call his boss and his boss would get ahold of him. Should I be offended that he would take a call from his boss and not from me?
Just for that, you should name the baby Finn, and when he protests, tell him to call the boss. I love Aidan. I like Whit, too. You could name him Garrigan. Or Jack. Jack Guilliatt. Em, have you given Jude any vapo rub? Johnson's makes a mild vapo rub for babies that works wonders. I think it's eucalyptus rub. In a light green bottle.
The baby vapo rub is usually near the diaper rash cream, not the cold medicines. Walmart, Walgreens, etc. It smells kinda good. Well, compared to Vick's.
We had a nice football weekend - went to Pekin and watched Ty play flag football and Zane play regular football (full gear and tackling)and Braden cheerleading. The flag football was fun - at the beginning of the game the coach wasn't there so Grace helped coach until Ryan came and stepped in. They require lots of coaches because the coaches have to pick up kids and set them in place before the play. (They're kindergartners - they just dink around hugging each other or kicking each other in the butt or playing in the dirt.) Ty played center and made many successful slow-motion snaps, knees locked. But it must work because by the time they get to Zane's age they're running lots of complex plays. Zane was in on a couple tricky plays (ran for lots of yards) and faked receiving a handoff a couple of times. He also played defense the whole game and had a couple nice tackles. Maybe Braden could give you a couple of cheers for the Halloween game. When is Bye-bye Birdie?
I think Gilbert Guilliatt is a very classy name. Gil Guilliatt sounds like a very down to earth stand-up kind of guy. He will probably grow up to be a good swimmer. I'm not sure about a middle name though. Maybe Finn. That way he will for sure grow up to be a good swimmer.
Just kidding about the swimming and middle name but I really do think Gil Guilliatt is a solid name. A real salt of the earth kind of guy. On a scale of one-to-ten, I give it a ten. ("Sir, we need a volunteer for this dangerous mission." "Call Gil Guilliatt, He'll do it.")
Thank you all for the name suggestions. Our house and the outdoors smell like a dirty ashtray. A film of dust accumulates very quickly. We're supposed to keep the windows and doors closed and it is very warm and dry. So we're cooped up with fans running and the humidifier running non stop. We're waiting for the winds to change from off shore to on shore sometime today.
Grace, I rubbed Jude's chest with vapo rub and his exact words: "Oooooooooh. That feels good."
Em - re: Jude's cold and possible remedies. I heard a doctor on NPR advise parents to get one of those cool mist machines and run that. Also, he mentioned saline nose drops.
As far as the cold medicines the reason they don't really work is because kids metabolize much differently than adults. The drug manufacturers just used a standard dosing formula whenever they came out with a new product regardless of the fact that it's efficacy was never given a trial basis in children.
When Eli was very young (8 months ?)he had a bad cold and Nance called the hospital and spoke to a nurse. She instructed Nance to give Eli a dosing schedule that was way beyond what a kid of his size needs. It was some sort of antihistamine with that psuedofed type ingredient. Eli was up literally for 36 hours. Poor kid. And to think it probably really didn't do him that much good.
Actually, Eli was 4+ months old and had pneumonia. I phoned the Nurse that had seen him, in the office, and she told me to give him Infant Sudafed and directed me on the dosage. (This was after he had an allergic reaction to penicillin.) Yes, he was up for 36 hours. He would begin to dose and then, his little arms would flail and he would open his eyes and begin to cry. It was awful. The next day, I called the office and asked to speak with the Doctor. He apologized and said that the Nurse should never have recommended this medication for a child his age. Sigh. :-(
I got an email saying to rub a thick layer of Vick's on your feet and put socks over it before bedtime, if you have a cough. I thought it was silly, but I think vapo rub works wonders, especially for kids so you don't risk the cold medicine side affects (for my kids, unbelievable crabbiness). So I tried it on Braden b/c she complains that the vapo stings her eyes if I put it on her chest. She giggled and waved her feet around happily, and asked me to do it again the next day - I think it worked for her stuffy nose. Of course, her feet aren't all that far away from her sinuses. Warm lemon tea with honey soothes a sore throat. Apple juice, too.
I kind of like the name Raymond. Not because it's a fabulous name, but it's solid and I've never known a Ray or Raymond I didn't like. Congrats Mary. Aren't Tom or Joe rotarians? P
Em, don't forget the boys' names need to sound good when you say them together. Give it that test before you choose something. If Jude and BLANK don't just roll off your tongue when you are yelling at the both of them, well, it isn't the right name. I was going to suggest Jack...but "Hey, Jude and Jack" or "Jack and Jude" just don't sound good.
and weird that you are looking at Aidan. the reason i like Ronan is because one of my best friends is named Aidan and his brother is Ronan. and his sister is Claire. his parents picked the best names ever
Liam was almost a Claire...but, he's a boy. I also wanted Ian or Aidan...but, we decided on Liam....oh, I guess you knew that. :-) Eli was always Eli Cash...even before we became pregnant. Good thing he turned out to be a boy.
Em - give us an update on the fires. It seems they are getting closer and closer to the coast. I remember hating those Santa Ana winds. For those who haven't experienced them it's like everytime you go outside you get blasted with super hot & dry wind. Almost like someone is pointing a giant hair dryer at you all the time. Very annoying AND you can feel the moisture just being sucked out of your body. Since there's no humidity you get the sense of being turned into beef jerky.
Someone farted on the train the morning and it was awful. We were all stuck in there with no windows and and no air. It just hung in the air the WHOLE ride. I hope that person goes to a Doctor soon because I think he/she is going to die. Also - when I got off the train I was pretty tired and was walking to work pretty slowly in a daze and a pidgen flew into my face. I instictively threw a punch at it and hit it and the girl by the train station that saw me hit the bird gave me a dirty look. At least the bird woke me up.
That's a hapless-Adam-Sandler-movie kind of bad morning...try not to cross any squirrel's path on your way home. You'll end up in jail for cruelty to animals. Maybe that girl was just trying not to laugh.
It WAS a really cool parade. I think this years' was the best ever! :-) I think photos will be featured in tomorrows newspaper...I hope Guinney is in it! I had no idea he would be such a hit...sure glad I shaved my legs that day as a lot of people took pix, of him, with my legs in the background! Ha, ha. :-)
Oh and yes, the kids ARE lucky to live in a small town. We remind them of that...a lot. The Homecoming Parade is just one example of, "why," Tom and I chose to move here. :-)
Ed, I laughed out loud as I read your post. The cats looked at me quizzically.
Tom, the Santa Anas finally stopped or at least slowed drastically today. There is basically no wind and tomorrow we should get the on shore flow which brings in moister, cooler air. The Santa Anas are exactly like Tom descrbed. I put lotion on my hands about every two hours and they are still very dry. Even a two year old's skin gets dry which tells you something. Yesterday was very hot. The temps reached 90 in Huntington Beach which is unheard of even in July and August. Keeping all the windows shut with no AC was pretty yucky. I put a bucket of ice and a cool mist humidifier behind a fan. It's cooler today. The sky isn't black, but it's light grey and hazy and the air smells like a smoky bar. I feel like I might as well have a cigarette, it can't be worse than what I'm already breathing. The closest fire to us is in Irvine which isn't that far. We're not in fire danger here, but all their smoke is blowing right at us. we are basically surrounded by fires to the north, the south and the east.
I'm getting my bath redone as we speak. This is the 3rd day of deconstruction. It sounds like a pack of rabid buffalo up there.
It's two men well into their 50's with the radio going really loud and them laughing. They seem to be enjoying themselves a little too much. They tell me only 3 more weeks to go.
What's wrong with the name "Joe John Jayjack"? Joseph John has a nice ring to it and the last name just happens to be Jayjack. It rolls off the tongue easily. Joseph John, Joseph John. Sort of like Gilbert Guilliatt, Gilbert Guilliatt. I may have been having fun making puns about the name Gil Guilliatt but in all seriousness I do really like it. In fact I'm hooked on it.
Congratulations Mary E. Too bad you didn't get pinned at the State Capital. Then you could be a Rotarian in a Rotunda. By the way, Can you do the Rumba?

Dad's is the judge for a trial that just went to the jury...they ordered lunch from Tom.
Happy Birthday Betty!!! Have lots of fun today!!!
That was part of the instructions (to the jury, I mean).

I didn't mean to imply that Joe III does not have good teeth, he does, but Kelli has perfect teeth.
I think food stamps should be redeemable at fine restaurants.

This is no BS...no more than 2 minutes after I posted that comment someone asked my server if we take food stamps....FREAKY!

Teeth: Both of our kids need braces. Eli now and Liam soon. We have no dental...that's a $10, 000 bummer.
Names: I like...Eli Guilliatt.
Other boy names I like are: Finn, Aidan, Quinn and Jeff. Jeffrey Scott sounds nice.
Tom, Guinness and I will be at Algona Realty waving at all the Paraders today! Guinness will be wearing a Garrigan tee...no, I didn't have the #71 screened on it...hope that's okay. :-)
you should name him Gilbert Girard Guilliatt. then you can call him Triple-G. he can grow up to be the ultimate white rapper.
"Trey-G's in da house. Ready to work your world."
Let's see. A name for Emily and Scott's baby. Hmmmm. Oh! I know. There hasn't been a Joseph in the family for about 17 years.
We like the name, "Dude."
Aiden is a very cute name, but there are probably at least 3 Aidens or Cadens or Bradens in every class, from newborn to 2nd grade. It would be like naming a daughter Kristen or Mackenzie. Also very popular are Jake and Andy, which are both great names.

That's a grand idea! :-)
We'll be looking for you, Nance! Come inside for the hot rum drinks first (just kidding)!
Pat, that's a dumb hunter, right?
Emily, how bout Algona Guilliatt...say it out loud, it sounds cool. Algie for short.."what's it all about, Algie?"
How many of us were in braces at once? All those trips to Fort Dodge!
I don't know, but Pat wins the award for the length of time in braces. I think Dr. Baber was a crook. It seems no one wears braces for more than 2-3 years and he had us all in braces for 4 or more years.

yes I win the award for longest time in braces and worst eyes. Lucky me.

Dr. Baber must have charged per office visit.

The baby vapo rub is usually near the diaper rash cream, not the cold medicines. Walmart, Walgreens, etc. It smells kinda good. Well, compared to Vick's.

They didn't even bring a marmot.
Happy Birthday, Betsy.

Walt Whittemore Guilliat.
Em~ No a/c?
Tom
I became a Rotarian yesterday!! Dad introduced me at the meeting, and gave me my pin, it was very nice...3rd generation because of Grandpa Cash.
Only a guy who named his son Joe John Jayjack would recommend Gil Guilliatt. How about Lou? or Ray? or Jack? Standup guys all.
Congratulations, m.e.
I was going to suggest Jack...but "Hey, Jude and Jack" or "Jack and Jude" just don't sound good.
i know i don't ever post on this but i actually read it all the time. i just needed to put my word out there about the baby name bizznezz.
I think you should name the boy Ronan. Or Everette. Or Sam. those are what my kids will be called, so wait don't take them.
Oh yeah, and this is Caitlin by the way.
and weird that you are looking at Aidan. the reason i like Ronan is because one of my best friends is named Aidan and his brother is Ronan. and his sister is Claire. his parents picked the best names ever
-caitlin
Liam was almost a Claire...but, he's a boy. I also wanted Ian or Aidan...but, we decided on Liam....oh, I guess you knew that. :-)
Eli was always Eli Cash...even before we became pregnant.
Tom
Tom
Maybe you shoudln't name him Charlie Weiss.
At least the bird woke me up.
pidgen puncher.

That's a hapless-Adam-Sandler-movie kind of bad morning...try not to cross any squirrel's path on your way home. You'll end up in jail for cruelty to animals. Maybe that girl was just trying not to laugh.
If you click on the site that Pat mentioned above...you'll also see Joe4...the fourth pix down, on the left. :-)
That looks like a really cool, fun Homecoming parade. Kids that grow up in small towns have no idea how lucky they are.
It WAS a really cool parade. I think this years' was the best ever! :-)
I think photos will be featured in tomorrows newspaper...I hope Guinney is in it!
Monica
Rotarian? What is that? Is that what Tom Cruise is?
Congrats!
Just flew back from LA (overnight trip) and we flew through the thick haze of smoke. It was creepy. The cabin smelled of hot brickets.
Monica, take those guys a ham sandwich and a Dr. Pepper and they will do anything you want. They will probably give you a discount too.
