Happy birthday to three for one Caitlin, Scott and Phelan. Though your good wishes are bunched together - you each celebrate separate from one another. Wishing you lots of fun and days full of sun.
Mom and Dad are going to Mexico later in June to help Uncle Bob celebrate his 50th anniversary as a priest.
This is a big occasion.
On Uncle Bob's 45th anniversary, Dad solicited us for support for Uncle Bob's work. He encouraged us to each send him $45 - one for every year of his priesthood. Together we ended up sending $1000 to Uncle Bob via Dad.
I think we can do that again.
Using the same principle exemplified by Dad - you could choose to send $50 this time. I would like to encourage anyone with a job to think of sending anywhere from $10 (if you can afford it) to $300 (if you can do that). Remember - the $50 is a good suggestion, but some can do less and some can do much more - don't let the $50 suggestion limit your ability to respond.
Make your check out to: Mission Helpers of the Holy Spirit. Get it to Dad by June 22 and he'll be able to bring it along.
Thanks so much for reading this and considering all that you can help Uncle Bob do.
That is a good suggestion by Lisa, however the checks should be made out to Mission Helpers of the Holy Savior (not Holy Spirit). We will be leaving here on June 24 and our plane leaves Omaha on June 25. Dad

Happy Birthday Caitlin!! like a precious may day basket full of chewy sweets and crunchy salty treats you're great, even the unpopped kernels! Love you! Mom
Happy Birthday Scott! the hat is good for shading your eyes I'm for the team that begins with an "I" there's a couple more on this blog who like "N" the season will tell who has the best men. But, untill "I" meets "N" our bets we can hedge that in Nebraska the "Nth" degree is noledge!
Scott I'm glad to see you are wearing an officially liscensed "Nance" cap. They are flying off the shelves.
Question: Why do people pay good money to go to the top of a tall building then pay even more money to look through binoculars to look at stuff on the ground?
When I was on top of the Sears building I looked down and saw a tiny white dot floating slowly back and forth along a quarter-inch long path. It took me a while to realize that it was a frisbee being thrown between two people. I'm with you, Tom. I'd rather see stuff from the unusual perspective that I've gone to some trouble to get to. When I was a kid I used to lie on the floor and gaze at the ceiling and imagine that it was the floor. You had to step over all the doorways, which was a little inconvenient, but otherwise it was a refreshing change.
Stevo and I, Molly, Catie and Mia went to see the new Indiana Jones movie yesterday at the 4:20 matinee. Then home to our house where we lit a fire and had chili. Is this really the end of May? The movie was lots of fun, but the first one is still the best. Molly only had to cover Mia's eyes once.
By the way, we had a fun evening Saturday night at Lisa's house. They had Fr. Dan over to bless their new house and invited us to dinner with him and Fr. Lazarus - delicious lamb and colcannon and carrots and an assortment of fancy desserts from Delice, ooooh. Then we all watched The Swiss Family Robinson, which was fun. Fr. Lazarus was very dubious about the little boy trapping the baby elephant. Elephants used to sometimes get into corn fields on his family's farm in Kenya. He doesn't think they're all that cute.
Our new bishop has asked the Knights of Columbus not to wear or to draw their swords at his installation mass tomorrow. Whether you agree with him or not, it takes some guts to get between a Knight and his sword. Interesting.
Here is the menu of the fancy dinner our staff served Friday to the four couples who bid $1900 for it at our auction last September. Please excuse the made-up French; it makes basic bistro food sound ooh-la-la. "Springtime in Paris” Dinner at Queen of Apostles May 23, 2008 6:30 PM

The table looked fabulous: wire Eiffel tower rising out of a dome of (fake) white roses, all black-and white linens, Edith Piaf singing on the CD, fire in the fireplace. We serve it in the rectory living room - they clear it out and put in a big round table and chairs and the priests serve the dinner and schmooze with the guests while Joan and I put out fires in the kitchen and test the wines. It's exhausting but fun.
Happy Birthday, Caitlin and Scott! Hope you had a great day! :-)
Scott~ I'll autograph your hat! :-)
Cathy~ Your meal sounds wonderful...kudos to you. Eli and Liam wanna see the Indiana movie too...maybe, Sunday(?). Good to hear it's, "okay," for the kids.
Last night, Tom went to baseball (Lakota) with Eli...started at 3pm and they didn't get home until 7:30pm. I went to baseball with Liam...set out at 4pm and returned @ 8:30pm. This morning we were off to baseball again at 8:30am...Summer is here! :-)
Scott says thanks for all the b-day wishes. We closed on the house this morning, signed the neverending paperwork with Jude the whole time saying, "I want to go home." but it wasn't too bad. Our furniture arrives tomorrow so we won't sleep in our new house til tomorrow. We're moving clothes, computer, etc today. Very excited.
Dad, our zip is 55419.
Ellen J, Emily Post would be appalled, but...sorry I didn't get your shower gift yet. How bout I double up on the wedding gift and get you something bigger than usual?
Happy Birthday Caitlin and Scott! What did you get for your birthdays? Oh yeah, Scott got a house but what about Caitlin? Poor Caitlin it's hard to top a house.
I just talked to Cathy and she & Stevo are headed to DSM for the installation of the new bishop. Impressive!
Caitlin is highly regarded and loved by my girls this summer. The other day we were in a store and Mary Laurel picked up a dress and said, "Look at this dress. It is sooo Caitlin."
We all had a great Memorial weekend here in Whittemore/Algona...Bob and Deb came on Friday, Dad and Mom treated us to a wonderful dinner at Sarah's, and then Ed arrived Saturday, Dad grilled Sat. night and Mom and Dad made spaghetti and meatballs Sunday and then Monday and Tuesday were Whittemore Days(the party kept going!)...Tom asked about Deb...she is great! I hope this is polite to say...if you didn't know all the trauma she had been through, you simply wouldn't know. She's VERY tough. I think she gets tired and of course is STILL recuperating.
Emily, I cannot believe you weren't thinking about more while trying to move and close on your house! Just kidding, don;t worry about it, the only think I want for the wedding is for my family to be there. Congrats on the closing! Speaking of the wedding, does anyone think they would like to stay at one of the Casino hotels in CB during the wedding time? I have blocks of rooms at two hotels across the street from each other, near all the new shopping areas, restaurants, close to the casinos, ceremony, and reception, but didn't know if I should try to block off more at the casinos? They would be at least $75 more a night, but come with a lot of built in fun apparently. The reason I ask is because I have been calling and leaving messages a lot, but none of the casino hotels have called me back so far. So I wonder if I should just give up or keep trying to set some rooms aside? I really don't mind calling or just going down there to do it, but don't know if anyone would want to stay there? Give me some opinions please.
I already wished Caitlin a Happy Birthday on Facebook.
But Scott, my wise uncle, Happy Birthday. Looks like our Bear's Den tradition will not happen this year. But there's always Ellen's wedding weekend. Maybe we can sneak away for a little bit to watch Nebraska play New Mexico State. I hear they have a dangerous passing game.
Tim Flannery's radical climate change 'solution'By Cathy Alexander May 19, 2008 07:01pm Email
SCIENTIST Tim Flannery has proposed a radical solution to climate change which may change the colour of the sky.
But he says it may be necessary, as the "last barrier to climate collapse."
Professor Flannery says climate change is happening so quickly that mankind may need to pump sulphur into the atmosphere to survive.
Australia's best-known expert on global warming has updated his climate forecast for the world - and it's much worse than he thought just three years ago.
He has called for a radical suite of emergency measures to be put in place.
The gas sulphur could be inserted into the earth's stratosphere to keep out the sun's rays and slow global warming, a process called global dimming.
"It would change the colour of the sky," Prof Flannery told AAP.
"It's the last resort that we have, it's the last barrier to a climate collapse.
"We need to be ready to start doing it in perhaps five years time if we fail to achieve what we're trying to achieve." Prof Flannery, the 2007 Australian of the Year, said the sulphur could be dispersed above the earth's surface by adding it to jet fuel.
He conceded there were risks to global dimming via sulphur.
"The consequences of doing that are unknown."
'Cutting emissions not enough'
Professor Flannery, who spoke at a business and sustainability conference in Parliament House today, said new science showed the world was much more susceptible to greenhouse gas emissions that had been thought eight years ago.
Regardless of what happened to emissions in the future, there was already far too much greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, he said.
Cutting emissions was not enough. Mankind now had to take greenhouse gases out of the air.
"The current burden of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is in fact more than sufficient to cause catastrophic climate change," Prof Flannery said.
"Everything's going in the wrong direction at the moment, timelines are getting shorter, the amount of pollution in the atmosphere is growing.
"It's extremely urgent."
'Use eBay to plant forests'
As well as the global dimming plan, Prof Flannery said carbon should be taken out of the air and converted into charcoal, then ploughed into farmers' fields.
Wealthy people should pay poor farmers in tropical zones to plant forests - possibly through a direct purchase scheme like the eBay website.
And all conventional coal-fired power stations - which did not have "clean coal" technology - should be closed by 2030.
Capturing carbon emissions from coal-fired power stations and storing it underground - called carbon capture and storage (CCS) - was a good idea, Professor Flannery said.
He urged Australia to dramatically fast-track CCS research and give the technology to the Chinese, who are building the equivalent of one new coal-fired power station a week.
Prof Flannery said while the Rudd Government was doing more to tackle climate change than its predecessor, it was still "nowhere near enough."
He called on the Government to remove the means test on the $8000 rebate for domestic solar panels introduced in last week's budget.
"It's probably the bureaucrats getting in the way, we all know that sort of policy is not going to work," he said.
Pat, it's probably better to step on a recently deceased lizard than one that's been deceased for 3 days in 90 degree heat. So count your blessings as you count giant flying cockroaches killed and remember, in about 6 months we'll all be jealous for about the next 6 months, if it's like this year.
Some of you know my friend Mimi, she's trying to sell her house. She made a my space page for her house, which cracks me up, but is actually a good idea. Here it is if you're interested: www.myspace.com/4402poppleton
All the Hotel talk has left me confused. So...which Hotel have you blocked rooms off at? How far from your reception is it? Is the reception attached to a Hotel? :-)
If you go to hotels.com and search hotels in Omaha with Eppley Airfield as a landmark, a bunch come back at around the $100 range just north of the Old Market (hilton, marriott, etc.). Check it out.
Hotels are blocked off right now at Settle Inn and Fairfield Inn in Council Bluffs that are listed above. I'll let you know if I end up doing any more. The reception is within 10 minutes driving distance from the hotels and ceremony, but in Omaha while the ceremony is in Council Bluffs.

Happy Birthday, Caitlin! Have a happy one!
Happy Birthday, Josh! I think you should yodel yourself a little birthday tune. Yodeling is good.
Well, I realize my birthday greeting is late, so Happy Birthday, Cate! Hope you had a happy one, and celebrate again today and have a happy one!
And sorry, Scott. Happy belated birthday. My brain is on hiatus until June 9. Apparently I have lost the ability to read.
Josh, you should yodel anyway.
That is a good suggestion by Lisa, however the checks should be made out to Mission Helpers of the Holy
Savior (not Holy Spirit). We will be leaving here on June 24 and our plane leaves Omaha on June 25.

What's up with this Catholic priest busting Hillary's chops at Obama's church? I thought Catholic priests weren't supposed to be so overtly political.
Funny thing about this guy is his appearance. He looks like the the ring leader in a racist lynch mob but he's a big time McSlimy backer.
