Oh, Tom's time card was wrong...he worked 8am (Monday) until 4:30am (Tuesday). Poor Tom...but, our chairs look awesome!

The Patio is beautiful and we are looking forward to serving our Guests in the great outdoors, once again. I went over again, this morning, and fine tuned it, helped carry out the chairs Tom had to paint and purchased some perrenials for around the Patio tree...that I'll plant tomorrow.

We were given a total of 8 umbrellas from some beer vendors...but, are short one 'cuz we purchased two more tables yesterday. Hoping the, "Wine Guy," can come through for us.

Happy Birthday, Brian. You hold a Bud like a man's man. And I mean that in the best way possible.

Jim - in the earlier post you said this gas tax holiday proposal was a gimmick. It may be a gimmick but this is the way I look at it....

Some say we can't leave this national debt to our kids and a suspension of the gas tax will only burden them further. Heck, with that. The way I look at it my kids owe me. How many times have I stopped to get a Blizzard when I didn't want to? Or how about that new bike I need to buy every couple of years cause the kids keep growing? Then there's the shoes that last about 5 weeks if you're lucky?

My kids don't NEED any of those things. Lots of kids in the world live without shoes after all. Do you think you or I will ever see a penny of our money from these free loaders? Think again, my friend, think again.

Emily.

That is an incredible house. I like all the wood in the dining area and living room. Lots of light, too. The backyard looks amazing as well.

But the thing that caught my eye was the basement. Please tell me you plan on keeping the dark wood paneling with the mountain vista wallpaper. Add a 60inch HDTV down there and you have the makings of heaven under your very own roof.

A couple recliners and a bar with a minifridge and before you know it, you guys will catch yourselves in Walmart looking at TV trays, which is not a bad thing.

Happy Birthday, Brian! I went over the other day and Brian had a haircut and was wearing some Buddy Holly-era safety glasses that he got off the internet and looked totally different but really cool.

Ma-a-a-n-n-n (whiney tone), the Police are playing here next week WITH Elvis Costello but we are just so overbooked and spending too much money. But doesn't that sound like a fun concert?

I bet the patio looks great! Good luck on your first patio day of the year - it might take a while for it to catch on because people are still expecting a snowstorm to sneak up from behind, but I hope they get out there and enjoy the spring!

I think you should have a contest to name the patio tree.

I just went back to look at Emily's house again. It looks so nice. Wouldn't it be fun to have a job "staging" houses for sale? Spending someone else's money and you would have a couple guys to carry the heavy stuff?

YEs, Happy Birthday Brian. That is a great photo. Molly, you should frame that one. And as you all know, TAURUSES RULE!!

Algonans: Sam and Jude and I are planning to go to Mom and Dad's tomorrow and stay until Friday afternoon. Maybe it will be nice enough to toast Brian on the Sister Sarah's patio. (I think it's supposed to get cooler though,)

The basement: I was really planning on just painting all that dark paneling in the basement, but now you have me thinking. I already own some TV trays. Hmmm.

Also, Cathy, there is no bridge on the property. That is a picture of Minehaha Creek that the realtor posted to illustrate the home's proximity to the creek.

Realtors!

Spent the morning looking at washing machines. Best Buy does not have the best buys. Nor does Sears. I don't like Sears anymore anyway.

Lowe's has the best prices we've found around here, or Nebraska Furniture Mart. The Lowe's in west Omaha said they could deliver it the same day if we wanted them to. Or maybe it was the next day.

Emily, Stevo's sister Karen painted their basement paneling and it took three coats - four in a couple spots. If she had known, she would have used primer and maybe only had to do two. So the point is, maybe you should just stick with Desi's view of heaven. In a couple years it'll be retro-cool, anyway.

Anonymous said...

Meanwhile, I'm trying to get Stevo to agree to painting our basement paneling. He says it's good paneling (not the cheap stuff) in much the same worshipful way he says "good rye bread." So, like I'd do it any time in the next ten years anyway...

I think all the rest of you should panel your basement family rooms. OK, back to work.

RE: Family Reunion
We are sure most of you are aware that Ellen Jayjack plans to be married on September 13 (ND v. Michigan). We believe that is 2 weeks before Labor Day weekend, when we usually have our family reunion.
We don't want the reunion to compete with the wedding so we have decided to move the reunion. A bunch of us were talking about it at Sister Sarah's a couple of weeks ago. Everyone agreed the date should be moved so the discussion turned to alternate dates.
July 4th weekend looked good because the 4th is on a Friday this year. But Tom would not be able to come because that is the weekend of the ABATE weekend in Algona and others want to be here for ABATE.
Memorial weekend was suggested but then someone pointed out that it is too close to Ellen's shower, graduation party and other graduations so it bit the dust.
We finally decided to pick out a common weekend in July. After talking with a few of you we settled on the weekend of July 12 and 13. We lose the advantage of a 3 day weekend and we know some will not be able to come. But if you have to make a choice between the wedding and the reunion we urge you to come to the wedding.
We are still open to input on this but we wanted to get the word out so that you can reserve the weekend of July 12 for the reunion. We will probably be there early on July 11 for anyone who can come on Friday. We will contact everyone in June to get a headcount.
We are going to Mayo Clinic next week so that Mom can get an evaluation of her headaches and memory problems so be mindful of that when you pray next week.
Love, Mom & Dad

We spoke to Bob a few minutes ago and there is a new, serious change in Deb's condition. She has been transferred to the neurology section of the hospital because of swelling of the brain and memory loss. It's not entirely clear what the cause is, whether it's a clot from the surgery site, an aneurism in a blood vessel in the brain or something else. They plan to do a cat scan later today but it does not sound like they are being very aggressive in trying to reach a diagnosis. Bob will call us as soon as he has some news. Keep praying. Dad

As you know...my Mom has a prayer chain. This means that every morning (Monday through Friday) she sends out intentions/prayers through a network of 60 women from her church. If a prayer is needed to go out immmediately and at a time other than I mentioned...they send out what is called an "SOS." I have called my Mom and she will be sending out an SOS for Deb...shortly.

This morning, I planted the Day Lillies (yellow) and Salvia (purple) around the Patio tree...added river rock. Looks pretty. The Patio is complete aside from one umbrella...and, 40 Guests!

We continue praying for Deb and for Mom as well. Prayer is a good thing.

Happy birthday Sean!

Happy birthday Jim!

Happy birthday Brian!

I hope you all had good days.

Emily, I think I wished you a happy birthday before but if not, Happy belated birthday!

As you can see, I haven't been on the blob for awhile.

Cathy, darlin, painting over real wood paneling is like painting over beautiful wood trim in an old home.

Emily -

Here's your big chance to get a front load washer... you can clean quilts, pillows... wish I had one.

They come in orange now, too.

My laundry room is too small for a front loaded. It's like Mom's only smaller. Unless I stacked them but then I'd have to remove cabinets and buy the matching dryer. Too much work and money. They're starting to make regular washers and dryeres in colors now too.

Deb's CAT scan should be over by now...keep praying!!

Anonymous said...

RE: Deb
I spoke to Bob about 2:30 today. Deb had not yet had the cat scan. The medical people belive Deb had a stroke, not caused by a clot which clogs an artery and deprives nourishment to part of the brain, but rather from a leaking blood vessel. The leaking blood is causing pressure on the brain. She does not have some of the normal stroke symptoms, such as one side of the body being paralyzed. Rather, her main symptom seems to be loss of memory. They were doing some memory therapy with her as I was speaking to Bob. I believe Bob told me that she is able to walk. They had not decided on a course of action yet. Apparently, they prefer to proceed with caution with this condition. Perhaps the cat scan will provide more information with will lead to a definitive plan of action. I get the impression that what they are hoping for is that the seepage will stop and that the body will heal itself. When I hear any more I will get back to you. Dad

Well, that is very worrisome. I'll be thinking about Deb and praying for the best. Please keep posting updates here so I can know what's going on.

I'm in Switzerland. Josh just left for work. I'll meet him for lunch, and then tomorrow (Friday) he'll get off early and have off til Tuesday and we'll do some sightseeing. The trip took longer than I expected. I left my house at 11 or so on Tuesday and got to Josh's apartment at 3 on Wednesday. Of course there's a 6 hour time difference. Once I got to Zurich there was a 2.5 hour train ride with 2 train switches (Up, Up Up). So, I was pretty tired...but last night we took a LONG, difficult walk and then went out to eat. The town (Le Locle) lies in a valley between two hills. I guess you wouldn't call them moutains, but perhaps two really steep high hills. We took a series of staircases up one side and then down and back up the other side. Then we walked out to this restaurant about 3 kilometers away where the woman speaks English.....one of the very few places that Josh has found an enlgish speaker, so he's partial to the place.
The horse is good there.
The landscape is gorgeous, the buildings are very gingerbready and swiss looking...the town itself feels very much like a working town...not a touristy place, not gorgeous, a bit run down, but the walks are fabulous and everything is unfamiliar, of course. The town has about 10,000 folks, but so different from a small town in U.S. bc there are very few houses. It's mostly old apartment buildings. Very dense. It's the headquarters for Josh's watch company (Ulysse Nardin), Tissot, and Zenith.
THere is no way to not be in good shape if you live here. I'm going to be stiff today.

Happy Birthday Brian!

Hey, Des, I followed a link in that story to a blog about this year's recruits. It looks like ND has some exciting prospects - another Golic, another running back, a defensive tackle, another running back....wonder how the offensive line is stacking up.

Last night at our Generations of Faith event I had Catholic trivia sheets on the tables just for fun, with questions like "The doctrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven was officially defined in: a) 333; b)1066; c) 1496; d)1950." Randy got 19 out of 20 right.

Good Morning!
I spoke to Bob about 9:30 this morning and things appear more encouraging. The cat scan did not detect any bleeding and they feel the pressure on the brain is abating. She is able to walk and, in general, she does not have physical limitations. Although she has had memory therapy, the problem is not with her memory per se, but with finding the right word to say what she wants to say. They are going to move her out of intensive care today to a more comfortable patient room. Bob has no idea when she will be coming home but she is getting a little stir crazy and wants to come home already. He did not say this but I assume that if this were caused by a leaking blood vessel they will not release her until they are certain that the seepage has stopped. I asked Bob if there has been any discussion about a possible connection between the three events: 1) the thyroid surgery 2) the bleeding at the site of the surgery 3) the stroke. There has not been any such discussion but I guess he can inquire about that later. As I get more info I will keep you updated.
Pat, It was good to hear from you. Sounds like it was a tiring trip but it also sounds like it is a picturesque place. Enjoy your long weekend.

That's good news about Deb. Hopefully it the news will continue to get better.

RE: Notre Dame football - The latest issue of Sports Illustrated has a story on "Four Storied Football Programs" and their spring practices. Naturally, one was Notre Dame. Not a real extensive story. The portion of the story talking about ND mentioned the return of a lot of linemen and how they have been put on an intensive weight gain program (one guy has gone from 287 to 330 pounds). The story recalls ND's awful running stats from last year and also talks about the heated spring practices with several fights breaking out. Apparently something new to this team.

What hospital is Deb in? I'm glad the news is good so far. If her memory is the only problem hopefully all it will mean is relearning some things. Bob shouldn't let her come home yet.

It used to be Sioux Valley hospital but now it's called Sanford or something like that. Ellen was born there.

Cathy,

Im right there with you. I have tomorrow off. My parents are in down and I think they want to see the Hopper exhibit at the Art Institute. Maybe I'll tell them to get off their pretentious high horses and go to a Cubs game instead.

i'll be spending the next several sunny afternoons outside. we have an interference issue at one of our wireless towers and i have to try and track it down. the equipment i'm using can't be exposed to rain, so i can only go out when it's nice out. i foresee a lot of these issues this summer, tapering off in the late fall....

Things to do while waiting for your husband to pick you up from work (because your car's in the shop): Make a skinny list of your most-frequently-called work contacts, less than 2" wide so you can give it that ever-fashionable packing-tape lamination, and stick it in your wallet. You can call it your "peeps" but only in your head.

Anonymous said...

Frank, do you have to CLIMB the tower?

Sister Mary worked for a home health agency and was visiting homebound patients when she ran out of gas. As luck would have it, a gas station was nearby.

She walked to the station to borrow a gas can and buy some gas. The attendant had loaned out his only can and couldn't help her. Sister Mary walked back to her car.

She looked for something that she could fill with gas and saw a bedpan she was taking to a patient. Always resourceful, she took the bedpan to the station, filled it with gas and went back to her car.

As she poured the gas into her tank, two Baptists watched from across the street. One said to the other, "If it starts, I'm turning Catholic."

Good Morning! (Friday)
I spoke to Bob this a.m. Deb had an MRI yesterday afternoon which did not show anything. She has been moved from ICU to a regular patient room and since she is not tethered to a bunch of tubes she can walk around a lot more. The surgeon who operated on her is out of town until tomorrow and he is the only one who can sign off on her being discharged, (except that his partner may be able to do it) so she will probably be discharged tomorrow, when the surgeon gets back.
since Bob has only one class this summer he can be with her most of the day. They are concentrating on speech and vocational therapy. She will be talking to you and stops in the middle of a sentence because she cannot think of the word she wants. Otherwise, there is nothing new and Bob seems very much encouaraged with her progress.
