Happy Birthday, Ed and Pete! Ed, is today your actual birthday? When are we grabbing a beer (again)?
Here's something I posed that got lost on the previous Liam post:
FIrst, Happy belated birthday, Liam.
ATTN: LAWYERS AND SMALL BUSINESS PEOPLE
A quick question for you all. Starting April 1, I will become an advertising contract worker. Essentially, I'll be my own "company," being contracted by advertising agencies and other, larger businesses to write ads for them.
Would it benefits be of becoming an LLC or Incorporated, if any? Is it worth it? Would I even be eligible to do it?
Des - I would follow the lead of one of the world's most powerful, yet hardly known businessmen. A real juggernaut operating below the radar. Word is he is heavily entwined with Bershire Hathaway and used Warren Buffet as his personal and business model.
He continues a legacy of dominance going back to JP Morgan and the DuPonts.
I had a good birthday. Last weekend I went out for some ribs and yesterday my work friends took to lunch at a place called "Pierogi Heaven" where they have 14 different kinds of pierogies. I got the potato and dill and the meat ones with bacon. Then last night went and had a couple of drinks after work.
I just realized I have to do a presentation on an English writer (Lytton Strachey) on St. Patrick's Day. The book: Eminent Victorians for my Biography class.
Anyone else realize that their BGHS scholarship fund check JUST cashed? Ours was written on an OLD account...an account with $10 in it. It went thru twice and cost us $64 in fees, sigh.
Hi, Today Mom and I saw the Mets beat the FL Marlins 4-3. The Marlins and Cardinals both train in Jupiter, about 10 minutes from our place. After the game we went to Rooney's Irish Pub for a drink. We had pierogies and "Sligo Sliders." Four sliders and eight pierogies filled us so much that we have no need for dinner. I washed mine down with a Guinness and Mom had a gin & tonic. The Rooney who owns the pub is part of the Rooney family that owns the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is the grandson of Art Rooney who founded the original Steelers. Another grandson owns a dog racing track in West Palm Beach and another one is the Congressman representing this district. It's been a fun day. Dad
The busy grocery store right down the street from me makes you check yourself out and bag your own groceries and carry your own stuff out. And of course they would like it if you would be kind enough to return your cart to one of those designated areas halfway across the lot. Fat chance.
You don't have to check youself out. You can wait in a super long line if you want the full service. Meanwhile, at most given times, theres a cluster of employees engaged in workplace banter. I hate this store but it is just 2 blocks from our house. One of the many reasons I can't wait to move.
Makes me mad that we've all been suckered into this level of service in so many industries.
Tom, I understand your frustration, but you HAVE to return your cart. That is one of my biggest pet peeves. You not returning your cart doesn't do anything to the store with crappy service, it just inconveniences other shoppers.
I return carts at other stores. Not this place, though. Amazingly, it's the only real grocery store in our suburb and the next closest one is 7 miles away. So they have the public by the short hairs.
I've never written a complaint letter before but I feel a tirade coming on.
With 5 losses, I would think ND would have to win the Big East tourney to get a 1 seed, 2 seed. But it looks like they have a big, comfy bye until the quarterfinals so that helps. Go Irish.
This Iowa/Nebraska thing is a great situation for the both teams and the conference. With UT/A&M moving to Thanksgiving, I would be surprised if ABC didn't pick this up for national coverage (followed by Arizona/Oregon?) And while Iowa/Nebraska already had the makings of a great rivalry series, establishing its own day makes it that much cooler. The BigXII just lost Black Friday. And I would imagine that everybody outside of Texas would rather watch NFL on Tgiving than UT/A&M. Saturday BigTen action: OSU/UM, PSU/UW. Not too shabby.
Oh, and I just read that Versus is braodcasting the Notre Dame Spring Game live.
I sometimes feel that sports banter like the thing I just posted has a tendency to take away from familial issues and anecdotes. And I'm pretty sure that only a fraction of the people reading this blog actually care. In fact, I bet its even irritating to some. Come fall, it's probably even going to get worse.
Here's my idea: We create a Straub sports blog to which anyone can post. We can include it in a group of links on the right hand column (along with Straubercize) so people can access it easily. A separate, but equal, forum for sports banter.
Let's see hwat happens in the Fall...I like reading the sports stuff here and I think it may be helpful to those who may be too busy to watch everything.
Altho, maybe we could get that "Nick and Mike Show" going!
They see me return the carts at well managed stores. They know my disdain for this crappy store. And they realize that my putting one cart away will have little impact on things as at any given time 25% of the parking spots are blocked with carts. All the while there are employees inside playing mental grab ass. And probably actual grab ass as well.
I make a minor scene everytime I'm in there. I will be in the long line to self service own transaction. People in line will be obvioulsy impatient. When I sense this I say, "the service in this store is BS. I'm going to Hienens over in Avon on the weekends. I just get what I need for now because this place really sucks." I say it loud enough for those around to hear.
Sports banter might serve as a buffer between big issues such as will the cart Tom leaves in the parking lot start rolling and crash into some post-college nice girl's first (cheap little) shiny red car and wreck her whole new-car buzz? or does she deserve it for going to such a crappy store and being so materialistic and excited about her previously pretty new car? Not that I'm against a sports blog. I like the sports postings here, although I sometimes sort of go la la la in my head if I'm not really that interested.
Tom, you should shop where it's fun. I actually skip my cart to the corral...Isn't there a cool Trader Joe's or a Whole Foods? You can walk around with a glass of wine and chill!
Just b/c 25% of the parking lot is full of carts doesn't make it oK. I really don't see how leaving your cart in the lot is sticking it to the crappy store. Really, as I've said before, this is a major pet peeve of mine. It's like the beginning of idiocracy. I know the inside of the store is what you would call idiocracy, but your cart is a contributing. Everyone probably hates going there and goes there for the same reasons as you. No need to make it worse for them.
It's like Bush's third term--we still have the Patriot Act, Guantanamo is still open, the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan will be there for years and many other promises made during the campaign have been forgotten except those made to Planned Parenthood. I'm so diillusioned! Dad
False hope - the currency of Obama. There is no other word that works other than false.
His promises were made with little consideration for logic, practicality and, at times, honesty. The primary consideration for them was how they fell into the electabilty equation or the adulation equation.
Dad, you can't say you're disillusioned when you weren't illusioned in the first place! I gotta say, I am disappointed by all those things, especially Guantanamo and the wars. And the Patriot Act. And selling out the middle class (education, jobs, mortgage assistance) while giving the very rich continuing tax cuts. Of course, there's plenty of blame to spread around on all those things. My hope is that the GOP and the Tea Party overstep on their gleeful union-busting spree and everyone becomes sick of them before the next election.
I really wanted a Casey's Pizza when I was watching the MVC BB tournament.
On Obama - I'm afraid it will take many many many years to undo all that Bush Administration did, but I don't think this is really his (Obama's) fault - there is just so much to undo. Just got news today that Illinois repealed the death penalty so that is good news. Just wish they would have done it before they killed 13 who were wrongly condemned.
On Carts - I really hate it when people leave the carts all over the place too. I usually will grab a loose cart if I can when I am putting mine away. I think if you don't put YOUR cart back your car should be crushed. Also - what about Caitlin? Does she deserve to have her new red car banged up?
On lent: if you want free shrimp from Panda Express today copy this into your browser and go get it:
Ed, Your point about Obama trying to undo all that he was left with may be true. Not entirely but in part. Regardless, Obama still pulled the snake oil act on everyone. So much of what he promised simply wasn't feasible.
Stevo and I ate early and seldom yesterday because of stuff we had to do, and we both got up at midnight and had a meatball sandwich, thus violating the spirit if not the letter of the Ash Wednesday fasting and abstinence practices. There we were, black smudges still on our foreheads, gobbling down our sandwiches, dripping red sauce, like starved wolves. It took about 20 seconds, and then we staggered back to bed and slept soundly until the sun came up.
Ed, I agree with everything you said. You are wise beyond your years. ANd Tom's years too. (j/k) Scott always want s Caseys pizza while watching the MVC games too.
Funny story Cathy. I still don't know what I"m giving up for lent. Maybe Facebook. Do we still get to have the thing we gave up on Sundays?
Branstad just appointed a lawyer to the Judicial Nominating Commission who is representing a group of citizens who are suing said commission for being composed mostly of lawyers. It's funny! My guess is he's not a flaming liberal.
I was just at an awesome estate sale with 1990 Buick Lesaber with only 57,000 miles on it. Does anyone want me to buy it. It only had a little rust around the back wheels. The guy worked as a salesman at a Chevy dealership in town for a zillion years. They're taking sealed bids. The neighbor to this guy came over and started telling everyone how the owner babied the car. I almost want to buy it but have nowhere to put it.
This guy also had tons of awesome hats, shoes and ties. He had more shoes than any women I've ever seen. Estate sales are fun. Monica

So, ND is ranked #4 now! I wonder if they'll get a number 1 seed.
Just announced - Iowa and UN-L (NU-L...whatever) will be playing on the friday after Thanksgiving this year and next. Fun fun.
Tom
With 5 losses, I would think ND would have to win the Big East tourney to get a 1 seed, 2 seed. But it looks like they have a big, comfy bye until the quarterfinals so that helps. Go Irish.

I like. But would this preclude me from angering your mother on this blog with my taunts of anything Cornhusker?
Tom
It would anger me on any blog.
Let's see hwat happens in the Fall...I like reading the sports stuff here and I think it may be helpful to those who may be too busy to watch everything.

Tom, you still have to return the cart. What is that teaching your kids?

Everyone should learn a lesson in humilty. Especially college chicks.

Hey!
Ellen K.
Tom, you should shop where it's fun. I actually skip my cart to the corral...Isn't there a cool Trader Joe's or a Whole Foods? You can walk around with a glass of wine and chill!
Oh...The representative from Liturgical Press is here from Minneapolis selling ads for the church "Chimes"...her name is MONICA STRUB...
I'm trying hookah tonight. It's very popular here. I have three hookah bars within less than two miles of my house.
P
I guess it would be correct to say I'm trying shish from a hookah.
She must do the whole northern midwest because she sells here and I think she does it in Council Bluffs.
Monica

I bet Obama puts his carts away.
Tom...for your penance and for Lent you should put your cart and one other cart away, every time.
I'm going to lunch with Madonna.
OK, everybody, what are you doing for Lent?
Humility would be putting your cart away because you realize that your irateness is not bigger than Ellen Kennedy's new car joy.
I meant to post this yesterday but Blogger wouldn't take it. My response to Ellen K. is "all of then except you".
Tom
Mary, where in Algona is it so fun to shop that you are inspired to skip? Not doubting, but.... Hy Vee? KMart? Casey's?
I really wanted a Casey's Pizza when I was watching the MVC BB tournament.

Caitlin is exempt too.

I'm thinking about having a beer right now so I wont be tempted to give up drinking beer for Lent.
Cathy, I love that story...I think the rule is "thou shall not heat up the meatballs before 12:00"...
Em, yes you can have your facebook on Sundays. Sundays are feast days the other days are fasting days.
Monica
Anyone going to a fish fry tomorrow? Omaha has the best fish fry's...which one is it where they give you a free beer while you wait in line?
That's at Queen of Apostles! But I saw that they changed some prices - now all-you-can-eat is $2 more than the regular dinner.
Em,
Don't feel bad. It's okay to be fooled once. Just don't be fooled twice.
Tom
Branstad just appointed a lawyer to the Judicial Nominating Commission who is representing a group of citizens who are suing said commission for being composed mostly of lawyers. It's funny! My guess is he's not a flaming liberal.
Giving up anger. It's gonna be a lo-o-o-ng Lent.
i gave up giving up... oh wait...
