thanks! This is Phelan. I had a nice birthday yesterday. It was 90 degrees. I got a dog and a rare book and a sunburn. Dave took me out for seafood, we had mussels and a white fish from lake superior. Today I fully embark on my 25th year, jeez it's crazy to be a quarter of a century.
Happy Birthdays, beautiful girls! Hope it is (or was) fun.
Good Luck, Picasso! hope you win the Stanley Cup!
Going to Mia's graduation tonight. Even she sort of chuckled about it. She told me she's going in early with her mom to set up the punch and cookies. It's hard to believe she and Jude will be in kindergarten next year.
A two year old boy whose parents are friends of some people I know recently died.
He had been strangled in the window covering cords at his home. He spent about two or three days at University of Iowa Hospitals before he died.
Please say a prayer for him and his family, they will have a hard time ahead of them.
If you have children, or often have children in your homes... and you have blinds or other window coverings that use cords, please remember to get those hooks that you wind the cords around.
Yesterday the police captain Scott works with gave him tix to the twins/yankee game so Scott took Jude to the new Targer field. They came home after the 5th inning bc of rain and it was getting late for Jude anyway. Jude's favorite part of the game was when a squirrel ran on the field I guess. Scott said the stadium was nice. Today he took the day off and I went along with Jude on his class field trip to the Como zoo and now Jude and Scott are on a bike ride. I am about to go pound the chx breast to make chx parm - one of his favorites. I bought a red velvet cake. I just didn't have time to make one. And he's getting some cargo shorts and polo shirts becasue all of his are about 5-10 years old. Then we'll go to Jude's t-ball game. Then we'll scurry home for baths, snacks and bedtime. Then maybe sit and watch tv and have a cocktail.
Sounds like a nice birthday. Little did we know how considerate of busy moms Mary Ellan was when she asked for 3 packages of Oreos for a birthday cake.
I just vaguely remember the Oreos... I think we were living on Durant Street?
Anyway - change the subject...
Is anyone staying at the shuttle inn for Joe Jayjack's wedding? Which hotel has a pool and complimentary breakfasts? Does anyone know if there is information on close restaurants / shopping, etc? WE gotta get our reservations made.
Lisa, we're staying at the fairfield - the one's that closer but with no shuttle. It has a pool and offers a free "deluxe continental breakfast featuring hot jimmy dean breakfast sandwiches." I know Pat and others are staying at the one with the shuttle.
Both hotels have a pool and complimentary breakfast. The only place I've eaten at around there is the Stockholm in Geneva. A small brewery with good pub food. Here's some more restaurant info:
Lisa is correct, I ordered 3 pkgs of my very own Oreo's, no cake...(I must have shared one pkg, because of no cake)...I will always remember it. And I was way past 3 years of age...we moved to Durant St. when I was 12 , so maybe I was 13 or 14! Oreo's are still the best cookie!
200 S. Durant is for sale, I showed it last week. Also you can check out Tom and Nance's house on our website...www.algonarealty.com
Monica, what are you doing at the Hampton Inn...are you getting tired of your house already?
I was picking up my prescription at Hy Vee, and the the pharmacy tech said, "You always remind me of the red-headed wife on Desperate Housewives." I gaped at her like a toad and she repeated, "You look like the red-headed one. I have always thought that. I can't remember her name."
I told her that was the nicest thing anyone had said to me in maybe three years. I look like Marcia Cross! The prettiest and skinniest of the Desperate Housewives. (No - I have not lost that much weight).
Randy said she's wrong and didn't Marcia Cross' character try to kill her husband.
I love when people say things like that. Maybe I'll start doing it.
I got a part time freelance job. I'm going to write web copy for law firms. The company gave me a test to apply. I was sent a few articles on negligence in general, and also in the state of Massachusetts (where a fictional law firm was) and told to write an informational article on negligence in MA and also a blog post (that might change every few weeks or so) that would of course subtly encourage readers to contact the law firm. Specific word counts were given. It's kind of awful (I think of all the info on the web created by people like me who know nothing) and boring but it's work I can do from home.
Mimi posted a youtube video on my wall called Jessica's "Daily Affirmation". If you haven't seen it (it went viral) it's pretty good. I can't copy the whole address here for some reason.
Thanks all for the birthday wishes! I had a great one.. I went to the coffee shop and read for most of the day, and went to shop around for a bike because I'm in the market for one. But the best part was going to the Surfside with about 15 friends (a restaurant on the river that only serves fried catfish and chicken, and the boaters are notorious for mooning the diners). The sweet old man who owned the place let us stay past closing time as long as we kept the pitchers coming. It was a blast, and the weather was perfect paired with a full (ish?) moon. And I'm taking about the one in the sky.
Urban survival tips: If you have to do business with the county recorder's office, try not to do it on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, when every person in the county who owns a boat is in there getting their boat licenses and tags. On the other hand, if you're in the Department of Public Works, lamenting to a couple of nice plaid-shirt guys how you can't find your lot pins and will have to hire a surveyor, if it's 3:00 on a beautiful Friday afternoon before a holiday weekend, they might just look at each other and then offer to meet you at your lot with their super-duper Pin Finder and save you lots of money, besides making a couple of new pals at City Hall. That Stevo, he's a people person in the best sense of the word. Also, just take it for granted that whatever one city official tells you will be directly contradicted by the one across the hall. I can't figure out how contractors get anything done, but I suspect most of them just do it and rely on long-standing relationships to cover any goofs.
Pat, your job sounds kind of fun. Or at least interesting. Congratulations! My friend Joan has a very part-time job just proofreading contracts and legal documents for spelling and grammatical and punctuation errors. Because a computer can't do everything.
Yeah, Mary shared one package of Oreos on her birthday and then hid the other two and lived off them for weeks. I envied her foresight.
Yeah it won't be a bad part time job, but the actual writing is kind of silly. Because part of it is getting key words in the text often so that when someone does a google search, that website it likely to pop up. So it's not just about writing well, it's about "search engine optimization." It's good experience, though.
So glad you got your permits, Cathy! Nice forethought Mary! Excellent bday, Caitlin!
Ohh, we leave for a week long vacation tomorrow. First to my parent's to drop off the dog (thanks!) and meet Andy's family. Then Kansas City Sunday and drive to the Ozarks Monday. We will come back to Council Bluffs next Friday or Saturday and go to a friend's wedding Saturday night. Just in case, I installed the car seat last night, got my chart from my doctor today and figured out what hospitals around there would be best for my insurance.
I most look forward to sitting on the beach reading some David Sedaris and doing nothing. But, I have never been to the Ozarks before. Any suggestions on fun things to do that doesn't involve water skis, fast boats, or extending amounts of walking?
Also, apparently I'll be doing the cooking. Andy's sister does not cook and his brother-in-law already suggested Andy's dietitian, fat free and healthy cooking mom stay away from the kitchen next week. Anyone see or try some good summer recipes lately?
Perfect Memorial Weekend movie lineup tonight: Stalag 17, The Great Escape, Bridge On the River Kwai, King Rat. Then something else but I won't be awake. Come to think of it, I've only seen fragments of River Kwai, probably the loudest parts that woke me up. I predict the same tonight. I've never seen King Rat but I read it. Kind of nihilistic, but brilliant. Poll: Would you eat a rat if you were starving? You bet I would.
Sounds like an excellent week, Ellen. I hope you get good weather.
Josh flew up the the twin cities yesterday to seal our driveway and deck and to paint and to do any other maintenance our house needed. He was supposed to get in at 9:40 but he got in at 4:30...apparently sat on the tarmac for about 5 hours in Atlanta.
I posted this this morning but it didn't get on, I guess. We didn't move the house today. The contractor wasn't able to get one last permit in time and the electric company refused to make inspectors work this weekend. So it's next Saturday!

Happy Birthday to Phe and Caits! Enjoy summer.

Don't have my bankcard or cash.
Had half a fiber one bar for breakfast.
