SEan doesn't run until this afternoon. I know his legs hurt already. Hopefully he will do well. Better to run in cool weather than hot. You run so much better.
You guys look great!! Hard to believe you had just flown over the Atlantic and been up for how many hours...and then go out to eat at this swanky Italian place in Chicago! Phelan had scallops wrapped in bacon, she said it was delish.. Looks like Mom and Dad both have new sweaters and Mom a matching beret!
so ED and I picked Granny and Grandpa from the international terminal of ORD yesterday around 5 which would have been like 11 Dooblin time. They had many interesting stories from having such a well planned and packed itinerary. Though it was late and they had travelled so much, they still wanted to take Ed and I to dinner so we went to Little Italy where we had a delicious welcome home dinner. I had jumbo scallops. Then we went to Ed's where he hooked Grandpa's camera up to an movie theater monitor and we looked at some big pics. It was fun. They didn't end up turning in until about 3 AM irish time! -phe
Welcome back! Stevo and I are leaving around 4:00 this afternoon for Indiana and we'll spend Friday with Stevo's mom and then meet Mom & Dad Saturday at ND vs BC. I'm all geared up. Yee-ha!
Here is a summary of our trip: Friday, Oct. 9--Pick up car in Dublin and drive to Kilkenny. Take a nap and then meet the Phelans in a hotel restaurant. We were with Feeney, Eamonn, Ellen and their four kids, Anya, Tom, Roisin and Evelyn
Saturday--Sleep in then drive to the Phelan farm for a very good, leisurely 3 hour lunch. Everyone was there except Anya who had a soccer tournament in Wexford. After lunch we strolled around Kilkenny and went to Mass at the Black Abbey in Kilkenny.
Sunday--We drove to Rooskey, a small town on the Shannon downstream from Carrick-on-Shannon, the county seat of Co. Lietrim. Very nice small hotel overlooking the Shannon.
Monday--Drove about 10 miles to Strokestown to spend a few hours at the hunger museum, then drove to Knock. Drove to Doolin where we stayed at a small hotel. Had dinner at a very nice restaurant next to the castle that Cathy & Steve discovered when they were there. Great meal. Photo by fireplace was taken in that bar. Then off to McGann's pub for a few pints and trad music.
Tuesday--Visited Tony McGann's house and then drove all the way down the west coast to a peninsula which juts out into the mouth of the Shannon, where it flows into the Atlantic. I always wanted to do that but never had the time. We had to walk about a half mile on soggy peat to reach the end of the land. Drove back to Kilkee where we had a nice dinner. Stayed at a B&B.
Wednesday--To the Lantern House, overlooking Lough Derg. I reminded Phil, the co-proprietor, that his bar is my favorite place in the world. Had a super dinner there. One of the photos that Ed posted was taken next to the river at Ballina, the town just across the river from Killaloe.
Thursday--Drove to Cobh (pronounced Cove) which is Cork's seaport. It is the 2nd largest harbor in the world. Most of the famine immigrants who came to America and who were sentenced to Australia came through Cobh. The Lousitania was torpedoed about 30 miles from here and the few survivors were taken here. The bodies which were recovered were also brought here. We visited the cemetary where there are mass graves. The Titanic's last stop before it sank in the North Atlantic was also at Cobh. We went to a museum which deals with all those things and stayed in a small hotel overlooking the harbor for 2 nights. Meals were OK.
Saturday--Drove to Wexford. On the way we visited to world's oldest operational lighthouse at Hook Point. Stayed in a very nice B&B just outside of Wexford. Got a photo of Mom with Commodore John Barry, the father of the US Navy, a Wexford native. Had dinner at Forde's, a small, 2nd story restaurant where I ate about 10 years ago and enjoyed the food and atmosphere so much that I decided to bring Mom there some day. Great food again. Went to Mass there.
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday--In Dublin. Stayed in a very comfortable guest house about 2 blocks south of St. Stephen's Green. Saw a stage show, Cabaret, had dinners in the Shelboure Hotel and another nice place. Heard trad music sitting about 4 feet from the musicians (another photo). We also took one of those get on and get off bus tours of the city during which we went to Kilmainham gaol (another photo). It was a nice 3 three days and a positive way to end the trip. Only disappointment was that Derek Warfield's concert which was scheduled to take place about 2 blocks from our hotel did not happen on Tuesday night but I had a nice visit with him on the phone.
Ed has been a great host for the past 3 days. We saw Phelan when we landed and hope to see her again tonight, when we will go to a German restaurant.

Mom and Dad, you both look so rested in this picture. How can that be? Have a safe trip down to Florida. Stop for lots of breaks.

Well, I have a class on Friday afternoon, but essentially, I've checked out by Thursday afternoon.
those steps are new aren't they?
Mary thanks everyone for the kind birthday wishes and says:
"Guess what I'm going to be for Halloween? A WITCH! A WITCH! What is everyone else gonna be? Ya gotta tell me!
Emma sez: "We're going to a bon fire tomorrow night if it doesn't rain. I love bon fires."
See ya'll!
Have a fun weekend.
Lisa
Yeah, I think those steps are new.
Nice photo.

Great photos!
Who are the musicians?
Oooh, it's a slide show. Ed you're so clever.
Who knew the Smurfs were so old?
It took me a second visit to realize it was a slide show. Very cool. So, Mom was in jail?
