Have a great birthday, m.e!
With your new Algona Realty
In your booth, in your chair
you make deals at the fair
and you surely don't look fifty-three!

See the house? It glows. It shimmers. It looks like it's about to ascend into heaven. Good job, Ed.

Anonymous said...

Is this heaven?

No, it's Decatur, Iowa.

Thanks to all who did this.

Birthday Haiku:

it is mary's day
close some deals and make some cash
drink beer at sarahs

Happy Birthday M.E. You look fabulous!

The house looks beautiful, and I'm extra impressed by my mom and dad and Molly and Brian. They keep going back to do more painting even though they already know how much work it is!
School starts next week. What happened to summer? I didn't do half the things I wanted to do this summer! Our pool closes the 19th. I'm so sad.

Isn't it stupid how they keep moving the start of school earlier when they could go into June if they need the days, and it almost certainly wouldn't be 100 degrees outside. Pools used to be open till Labor Day. Even if all the college-age lifeguards are gone back to school, they could condense the high school kids to fewer locations or cut the hours but keep the pools running till then.

A tip of my hat to all who did the fantastic scrape, repair and paint work on the house. I wish I had been able to help.

The dew point is a hellish 72 right now. The kitchen is an absolute sauna. Looks like it will cool off later in the week. Thank, God!

Ok here is the order I have for Straub:

Ellen J: Case of each
Cathy J: Case of each
Joe J: Case of regular
Joe K: Case of regular
Frank S: Case of regular
Bob S: Case of lite
Pete S: two cases of lite

If i missed something let me know. I am going to ohio tomorrow I think.

That house looks so saintly white it could float up to heaven. Funny when it was hellishly hot that day. You are all so amazing. As Ed well knows, I was more than a bit worried about you all painting in that heat.

What is a dew point?

Laller was the name I gave you for Mary Ellan was too complex for a toddler's tongue.
Happy Birthday!

Algona Realty - what a great way to start your year!

Oh, man, Tom, I was talking the other day about all the people who have to work outside when it's like this, especially if they can't stop frequently to sit down in the shade and drink some cold water. Maybe you should cook without a shirt on and see what that does for business.

Happy birthday, Aunt Mary. You're still my favorite godmother.

So, with the side of the house that has yet to be painted, I think we should do a mural. I'm thinking "Great Moments in Cash Farm History."

It would begin with the groundbreaking on the original settlement and end with the encounter with the swamp people. What else would be in there?

Ed flipping over his bicycle during celebrity bicycle croquet polo. Desi's dance with the Roman Candles. A softball game from the days when we used to move around a little. The Trophy.

Kids running the hay bales.

Happy Birthday Mary!

The house looks amazing. Well done! I think I would have taken my chances in the house. I would have to be clubbed over the head and dragged into that cellar.

What about poor me cooking 80 chops over a blazing open pit with only an old wire fence gate as a make shift grill over said pit. I'd like to see that little ewok chef from New Orleans try that.

What IS his name? You know the guy that says "Bam!" everytime he adds a spice to his dish.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes, but Cathy, I think I'm 52...I was born in 1955...I have to admit, I told people at the office that I was 53, and then had to correct myself! Great way to instill confidence!!! The past 6 months has been a blur...I guess that's my excuse..

Joe J.~ I truly think the mural is an awesome idea! Perhaps, you were joking? I'm not. :-) Is it the side as you approach the farm while driving up or the side that faces the fire pit? Do we have an artist in the family? Yah we do! I nominate Mike LaVelle! :-)

Bob Straub (as if I were trying to contact any other Bob via the Straub blog):

I would love those Kent/ISU tickets. Turns out Phelan and I are driving out on Thursday morning to make the ISU tailgater. You can mail them to:

Desmond LaVelle
200 West Menomonee Unit 12
Chicago, IL 60614

Also, who else is going for the game? I would like to coordinate a meeting spot. We should all park together and booze, listen to tunes, eat food and listen to Phelan's Cyclone A$$ kicking ballad she's preparing.

And Bob - as I understand it, you will be at the game. Can I pay you for the tickets in person?

Let's get it on. I hear Kent's QB transferred to Baylor. Let the good times roll!

Thursday, we drink. Tomorrow, WE RIDE!

I have Peyton Manning on my fantasy football roster. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! (evil laughter) Fantasy Football is fun. It cost us less to play than one date night (including babysitter) and we're already getting trade proposals. My bro-in-law made some snide comment about people playing fantasy sports because they couldn't do it in real life. Duh.

Anonymous said...

My bro-in-law Eric, not Brian. I don't think Brian has ever made a snide comment in his life.

We looked at houses in Council Bluffs on Sunday and stayed at the LaVelle home that night.

Here is what my daughter, Mary Laurel, told Mike: "My talent is being bossy and talking too much."

Anonymous said...

HA! THAT'S FUNNY...WELL, ATLEAST SHE'S SELF-AWARE AND HONEST! :-)

Anonymous said...

Happy Birthday Mary! Hope you have a great week! What did you do to celebrate?

I don't know if Andy and I will be going into the game, but we will be tailgating. I think someone should stay outside the stadium on terror-watch duty. Anyone can park at our apartment, then we can take a car or two there or to a friend's house near the stadium.

Anonymous said...

I think Stevo and I will be able to come to the game. I thought we would have to bring lots of ladders to the farm but now it looks like we'll get by with what's there. We're going to settle for hill tickets, but if anyone needs more tix Stevo knows a guy who has 2 (for $50 each!) If we all meet at Ellen's then we can tailgate together. At Iowa State, it's not like you can walk around until you find your party. It's immense.

By the way, I am claiming a bed in the house on the grounds that we have so much stuff to haul out from the painting blitz that we can't possibly squeeze in a tent. No? on the grounds that I am diabetic. No? on the grounds that we earned it from all our hard work (not to mention Monica & family, Ed, Grace & Ryan, Molly & Brian, Joe J, Ellen & Andy). No? Well, then BECAUSE I AM THE OLDEST!
m.e., sorry about getting your age wrong. You don't look a day over 39. Are you guys going to the ISU game? I tried to call you on your birthday but your mailbox was full. We miss you.

Phelan...you're awesome. I love the way you are. :-)

A clarification on those 2 tickets that my friend has for the Kent State game. He is only asking for whatever the original ticket price is. He does not know if it is $40 or $50 because he hasn't received them yet. If anyone wants them, let me know. We are getting Hillside tickets because they are only $20 and we have to buy 4 and we want to be together. Actually, you can see pretty good from the hillside and you can move around if you want to.

Anonymous said...

Phelan sent me that video greeting by e-mail...I loved it so much I asked her if I could share it with all of you on the blog!

Anonymous said...

Has anyone noticed that this is the first time I have posted comments on the blog? Never had time to blog at work but with this cox cable high speed internet at home it is easy and fun.

Anonymous said...

Happy belated birthday Mary. You have always looked young.

Phelan............GREAT.

Anonymous said...

Happy Birthday Mary. Next time you're in Omaha we all want to have a good-by/birthday dinner or some such celebration as you and Mike sneaked away to Algona so fast we never got a chance to say goodby or good luck or we'll miss being only minutes away!

Anonymous said...

Stevo, welcome to the blog. Once you have high speed, you wonder how you ever managed without it. Kind of like a microwave.

Mary, that video Phelan made was great

Everyone here is complaining about the heat and humidity. I think the high in HB today was about 84. It is a little sticky, but nothing like what midweterners are used to. Certainy it was hot in downtown LA and the Valley and deserts, but not here on the coast. But no one here has AC because you don't really need it. IF it gets over 80, people act like we're sizzling.

Well, Phelan's clip sent me on a middle-of-the-night can't-sleep youtube odyssey that lasted from 1:30 till 4:15, when I realized I had been watching videos of laughing babies for a half hour. Time to go to bed before I go over to the dark side (Rocky Horror clips or crying babies or whatever) I love Phelans blanket fort concert.

Cathy,
You should go here to appreciate all that youtube can bring.

My first exposure to you tube could not have been happier. I love your video birthday message.

The democratic presidential candidates will be debating here on Sunday at Drake. Walking distance from my home. I'd love to go see George Stephanapolous.
