On the way out the door to the Garrigan Football Game last night:
Eli: "Dad, what number is Joe?" Dad: "I think #71." Mom: "Yah, I think so too." Eli: "I should get Straub and the #71 screened on the back of my Garrigan shirt for when we go to the games." Mom: "That's awesome, Eli, we can do that." Liam: "Me too!"
This morning I woke up a gazed upon my trophy with humility and pride.
The local democrats are angry with the Hillary people. Why? Because when they planned her visit here they didn't bother to ask the local dems where a good place would be to have here speak. Instead they just contacted Premiere Pizza directly and arranged it.
The owners of Premiere Pizza are pretty vocal Republicans.
Well...some of you were in the kitchen at the farm when we were arguing - er, discussing - about the story about the Catholic teacher who was discharged and is suing the diocese. This morning I learned that the diocese has instructed pastors not to issue contracts for church workers. That means I am working without whatever paltry protection a contract gives. Since most church worker contracts have language in them that pretty much says we serve at the pleasure of the pastor, the contracts are almost meaningless anyway, but to have the diocese yank them REALLY pisses me off. So much for the Church's teachings on the rights of workers. Since they teach that workers have the right to form unions, maybe we should start to organize. I would really like to go kick someone's ass, I just don't know whose.
Are you saying you had a contract and that the diocese arbitrarily voided it? If so, I don't think that would stand the test in court. Every employee serves at the pleasure of the employer but they still have basic rights.
Cathy...do you have a new Bishop yet? If not...who ordered this new rule? Maybe they think Lay People means you are to lay down and they'll walk all over you!
Labor Day weekend was wonderful...I think the best weather we've ever had! The house looks just beautiful! Thanks again to JAYJACKS...RICHARDSONS...ORTEGAS...KEBNNEDYS...JOE J...ELLEN AND ANDY... Cathy and Steve were there MANY times...Joe J even with a move and new job...and Molly and Brian are self-employed plus Brian's band (hard to get away!)...and all the others...THANKS!
I'm sorry I missed the games at the farm... but Zane's team won their own trophy on Monday. They won three games in a double elimination tournament to win 1st place! Which was great, because they're sort of the bad news bears of the three Pekin squads. There were 9 teams competeing. Zane's name and number were called out four times throughout the day for tackles he made - it's so cool to hear the play-by-play guy say your kid's name over the loudspeaker.:) Ryan asked him how it feels to be a champion. His response: "It hurts." Ah, football.
So, Em, did that shaky camera style make you queasy? I had to avert my eyes from the screen a lot just to avoid tossing my cookies. That happened to me with the last Bourne movie too. Otherwise good movie.
Clarification on the contracts: when my last contract ran out, I got a raise but no new contract. That seems to be the way parishes are doing it, so I have no idea when the no-contracts policy went into effect. Since any pastor can fire anyone at any time, the contracts are essentially meaningless, except as an acknowledgement of a lay person's value and contributions and to stipulate certain details like duties, vacation time, insurance, etc. The only person in our tri-parish group who has a contract is Sr. Lorraine, thus perpetuating a hierarchy of value to the community (i.e. nuns are more important or holy than lay employees) When I made a few sarcastic remarks about the policy, Fr. Dan, who I would trust with my life but who doesn't quite get the problem, offered me a "paper" stating my rights and duties but I told him I don't need no stinkin paper. Not in those words. He has powered a raise for me and Joan through the finance committee every year despite budget constraints. I told him that we're in great shape while he's there, but a new pastor could come in and clear the decks or cut pay or reduce positions to part time. I know DREs whose pastors make them take vacation days to attend workshops or retreats, who are paid hourly but can't count overtime hours, or who have had their workloads doubled with no corresponding compensation. Anyone who works for the Church goes above and beyond all the time. But if the Church is going to urge the rest of the world to value work and workers and give them certain basic rights, the Church should do the same. Decent wages, the right to form unions, etc are all spelled out specifically in papal encyclicals and statements from the National Council of Catholic Bishops. As far as I can see, it's do as I say, not as I do. I think at the diocesan level, someone gave them some logical legal advice, but nobody stepped up with an opposing moral stance. I wonder if all those people in the chancery are working without contracts.
I sent emails out with on's new address and phone number. As you know, he's been discharged from the hospital in St. Peter and is living in a halfway house in Mankato. Dad.
Gerry Straub is in Cedar Rapids today and will return in Oct. I'm having coffee with him tomorrow. I asked him when in October he was going to be here and he said the Feast of St. Francis. I couldn't ask him what that date is as he has devoted his whole life to St. Francis's work and as a Catholic I should know it but I don't. can anyone one tell me when it is? At that time he will be here with a priest who is to go on trial tomorrow for war protest. People are welcome and encouraged to come meet him. He has led a very interesting life but he is very quiet and understated.
I have a major announcement to make. Drum roll, please......
I am retiring from the Graveyard Games. I'm going out on top. I won't fade away like some has-been clinging to the glory years.
I've done some real introspection to come to this conclusion. And while gazing with humility at my trophy and recalling the greatest performance in the history of athletics (I will be writing a book "The Tom Straub Story") I realized the right thing to do is to retire now.
I realize this will come as a shock to my fans. I apologize if you feel I am letting you down. But, I need to do this now. I will be constructing a website that will have video clips of my performances and some Q & A with myself along with a blog feature so you can relive my great moments with like minded fans. In order to allow as much participation in this as possible the registration fee for members to this site will only be $150.
I will formally request of the Game's Commissioner to make me the official judge of next year's games. Perhaps a small induction ceremony would be in order when my appointment comes.
I thank all of you for your support in this most difficult of decisions and look forward to next year's events.
Pete and Mely have been in Algona the past couple days...it's been fun! By the way,Mely stayed behind and did the final cleaning at the farm (mopping, etc)...when Pete gave the talk about why he and Mely had decided to have a drawing for Granny's silver, it was so heartfelt and generous...just like them!
Football Friday night! Garrigan travels to Clay Central Everly (formerly home to one of Iowa's storied 6 girl basketball programs, the Everly Cattlefeederettes) to take on a team they waxed last year. Things will probably be different this year as CCE has a new coach and last week stuck with highly rated Britt West Hancock, losing late 28-14 or something like that. This is the last game before district games start next week. If you're interested the game starts at 7:30 and is available via webcast at myinfcentral.com (or so they say). Garrigan, after beating a ranked opponent last week, moved up in the various polls ranking anywhere, depending on the poll, from 2nd to 7th in the state.
The Algona Predators (Eli & Liam's football teams) take on their first opponent this Saturday. Eli plays fullback and linebacker. Liam plays the line on both sides of the ball.
Liam has gained a reputation of being a hard hitter. Eli is has (to my suprise) pretty nifty moves once he gets thru the line. Not fast, but can avoid hits.
Say it ain't so, Tom! The Commissioner of the games will be appointing an investigative board to look into allegations of steroids, betting and score-fixing next week. Your sudden retirement looks just a little too timely.
Is the 5-girl basketball team still called the Cattlefeederettes or have they been demoted to Cattlefeeders?
I'm sitting at Cathy's desk at work...the blog was up...she's nowhere to be found...her purse is right here...I'm supposed to deliver Notre Dame tickets to her...but she's not here...you're all my witnesses...I guess I'l keep them. Maybe Fr. had a meltdown cause she's on the blog and talking of contracts...I hope she OK...I'll keep you all posted!

BGHS won 26-14. We played a lackluster first half and were behind 8-6 at the half but we played much better in the second half. Joe4 played quite well. He probably had about 6 tackles and stuffed three straight runs at the goal line during one series. He did not start on offense but subbed for each of the starters at both guard and tackle positions. The kid who starts at left tackle is not really all that effective but Garrigan does most of its inside running behind Shane Koob and David Frideres who are the right tackle and guard. They are quite good. Perhaps the coaches feel Joe can contribute most on offense by being able to play all four positions and thus provide some rest for the four starters. I know the coaches are trying to build up some depth on the line and the first two games were non-conference. The conference schedule begins next Friday. Joe3 is the reporter for the Algona paper so he had a press pass and roamed the sideline during the game. Dad

The Algona Predators found themselves down 16-0. On Algona's next possesion they got a long run to the outside from their tailback. The contain on the outside failed and off he went to paydirt.
The half ended with a score of 16-8.
In the second half the Predators gave up the ball on downs and immediatly the Sioux got a long run to the outside from their tailback. The contain on the outside failed and off he went to paydirt. The 2 point conversion failed.
It was a defensive struggle from that point on, although there were several runs to the outside for long gains. In the end the Predators lost 23-8 or something like that.
Liam Straub hit many a Sioux when he wasn't pulling up his pants or "Monkey Dancing". One of his team mates said he had an awesome game with 2 sacks. I can't be sure of this but the lad had fun.
In the fifth grade game it was much the same with most yardage coming on long runs as a result of broken containment on the outside. They lost 22-0.
Eli Straub as full back had 3 rushes up the gut for a net of probably 5 yards. As linebacker he was assisted on several tackles.
It appears the coaches on both squads will need to work on containing the outside run.

*poshness n. (Victoria Beckham) Word History: "Oh yes, Mater, we had a posh time of it down there." So in Punch for September 25, 1918, do we find the first recorded instance posh, meaning "smart and fashionable." A popular theory holds that it is derived from the initials of "Port Out, Starboard Home," the cooler, and thus more expensive, side of ships traveling between England and India in the mid-19th century. The acronym POSH was supposedly stamped on the tickets of first-class passengers traveling on that side of ships owned by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. No known evidence supports this theory, however. Another word posh was 19th- and early 20th-century British slang for "money," specifically "a halfpenny, cash of small value." This word is borrowed from the Romany word påh, "half," which was used in combinations such as påhera, "halfpenny." Posh, also meaning "a dandy," is recorded in two dictionaries of slang, published in 1890 and 1902, although this particular posh may be still another word. This word or these words are, however, much more likely to be the source of posh than "Port Out, Starboard Home," although the latter source certainly has caught the public's etymological fancy.
Just to wrap up the weekend's football news, Zane played Saturday and had two stops, carried twice for 17 yards, and forced a fumble. Braden was a cheerleader. (Yes, they have cheerleaders) She told me a couple of their cheers, but I can't remember. They're mildly, cheerfully insulting toward the other team.

Here's what has happened at Holy Trinity:
It has been determined that only those careers that normally have contracts would retain them: ie teaching jobs.
Those outside of that realm have been working without a contract since they ran out two years ago.
This sounds a bit reactionary

But, again some busy body on the parish board may label you a bad seed. Then you could ask the board, "What would Jesus do?"

Yeah to Don!
Monica, you HAVE to watch the Bourne movies.
The Bourne movies are marginally good. The chicks aren't that hot and Bourne kind of a wuss when it comes right down to it.
I HATE the shaky camera bit. It's way over done.

Right now it's half time in the Michigan game. It looks as though the Predators may be able to offer Lloyd Carr a job.
