Happy Birthday, Emma sweet,
with dreamy eyes and dancing feet.
I hope your day was lots of fun
with cake and presents and everyone
wishing you lots of birthday wishes.
(Can't think of a rhyme here, except for "fishes")
Can't wait to see you at the farm
with your imagination and princess-like charm.

Hi everyone!

I'll show Emma her birthday wishes after work!

Emma got a bike (still with training wheels... she has amazing balance and no confidence). A wand, wizard's hat and magic tricks and lots of books.

Congratulations to Ellen and Andy. Congratulations to Emily and Scott, congratulations to Ed for making the long haul, and congratulations to Cathy, Steve and company for making the farm house lovely.

Ellen, Andy and Joe - I still hope to see you soon.

Ok

I was invited to a debate viewing party with Hillary supporters at the Varsity Theatre across the street from the debates on Sunday morning.

It was great. But I didn't get to see George or Bill Richardson. Just Hillary. John Edwards was the only one to mention Christ in his response about prayer.

The funny thing was this: There was no one hanging around outside. No one wanted to get up at 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning to see the action. I saw only one protester.

Can you imagine going to every county fair, every junior college, every possible venue for a year? When Obama was in CB, he couldn't spit out the name Pottawatomie (as in Pott. Co. Democrats) and finally said "Potto-watt-TOE-mie" while audience members laughed in a friendly way but nobody shouted out the name. No point here, I just think they must get so burned out and brain-dead. Anyway, did you have fun with the Hillary fans?

i was SO GLAD to be invited. I sat next to a very nice lady on one side, on the other was a man who was supposed to have will call tickets to the debate itself but he showed up too late.

The Hillary bunch made sure all of the youngest, and oldest (those with walkers are chosen) and most colorful people were up front for the cameras when she came in.

Happy Birthday Emma! On your birthday you should be allowed to party like a rock star, so go trash a hotel room.

i watched the movie 300 this weekend. fun show. lots of violence, if you're into that. i never knew that the ancient greeks waxed their chests.

Anonymous said...

They also waxed philosophical.

Anonymous said...

Is that what's in gyro meat?...

I saw a show that mentioned that the latest trend now is hairy chests (on men!)...

Happy Birthday to Emma!

Do you think the Greeks waxed before the Olympics? They competed naked. And they wrestled. I bet they wanted to be as slippery as possible. I bet they shaved their heads, too. Wasn't 300 about Spartans?
I watched Kung Fu Hustle this weekend. That is a great movie.

The Mindset for the Class of 2011

What Berlin wall?
They never “rolled down” a car window.
They have grown up with bottled water.
Nelson Mandela has always been free and a force in South Africa.
Pete Rose has never played baseball.
Russia has always had a multi-party political system.
No one has ever been able to sit down comfortably to a meal of “liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.”
Wal-Mart has always been a larger retailer than Sears and has always employed more workers than GM.
When all else fails, the Prozac defense has always been a possibility.
They grew up in Wayne’s World.
U2 has always been more than a spy plane.
Fox has always been a major network.
Women’s studies majors have always been offered on campus.
Being a latchkey kid has never been a big deal.
They learned about JFK from Oliver Stone and Malcolm X from Spike Lee.
China has always been more interested in making money than in reeducation.
The space program has never really caught their attention except in disasters.
They’re always texting 1 n other.
They will encounter roughly equal numbers of female and male professors in the classroom.
Avatars have nothing to do with Hindu deities.
The World Wide Web has been an online tool since they were born.

Happy Bday Emma!

We fly to Omaha today.

Ed how was the first day on the new job?

Anonymous said...

Yea Ed! HOpe the job is great!

We rented Hud with Paul Newman the other night. Would recommend it.

Desmond may be sipping a glass of wine overlooking the Med.Sea in the south of France...BUT, we got to go to the Legion BBQ & Sweetcorn dinner and watch Bossie Bingo!!! It was fun...Bossie the cow walks around a fenced-in grid, and many, many chances are sold, betting on where she will poop!...very laid back and cow friendly...Michael Vick would not have liked it!

that was m.e.

Happy Belated B-day Emma!

My first day on the new job was easy-peasy-Japonesy. They don't have me set up with a computer yet so all I did was read and go to lunch. I won't be able to get Thus or Friday off before Labor Day so will send the keg on with Desmond for the Straub-a-poluza.

I'm taking Betty to the Iowa State game and can get a few more tickets at face price (don't know what it is). Any takers? Who's going?

Anonymous said...

Stevo & I are going - are you talking about the first game? - and Ellen and Andy are tailgating with us. Also Des and Phelan, Bob, I don't know who else. But Stevo & I are getting hillside seats. We should meet at Ellen's and all tailgate together. Was that Monica, Lisa, Erin, Nance, Molly or Grace enjoying the golden silence?

Anonymous said...

That was Monica and I got so much done today it was amazing.

Anonymous said...

I can't wait till my kids are school age.

Anonymous said...

Have Ellen and Andy pick a spot early like last time, in with all the tailgaters...that was pretty amazing!

Anonymous said...

I'm in Omaha for the first time in 23 days...the house is half empty, it's weird...gonna help Caitlin pack and last minute shopping, then off to South Bend on Friday morning!
Emily, stop by tomorrow if you can...are you guys coming up to Whittemore after Labor Day?
Desmond called from France, he's having fun...Phelan's band opened for Marvin Tate and the guy who was with Wilco, last week...it was the Chicago Reader critic's choice for the weekend!

Anonymous said...

Are people staying in Ames that night and then going down to the farm in the morning...or are people going to the farm after the game?

Anonymous said...

It might be pretty late to go down to the farm in the morning-but that sounds like fun- so anyone is welcome to stay with us that wants to. Although you'll be sleeping on floors and couches. I don't know how early I can be there to pick a spot, but I'll see where other people are that will be tailgating early. What time is everyone getting into town? What time are people going to the farm?

Ty does not want me to walk him to school. He can do it himself. I'm only a little bit hurt. I'm mostly relieved that he loves kindergarten so much. I just hope it lasts!
Chicago area residents, did you survive the storm? Did you lose power? If you don't have plans yet, Ryan has a football game in North Chicago tomorrow (Saturday) at 7 p.m. I'll get the name of the stadium and directions if you're interested. Right now, I'm planning on being there. My cell # is 309-208-7761.

Stevo and Joe just called me from the farm to report that THE HOUSE IS DONE! They rock. Never fear, would-be painters, there are still the scruffy-looking barn doors. In three hours on Friday we will have that place looking swell. Come prepared. (Next year, the woodshed.)

Anonymous said...

Any more basement flooding in Whittemore or Algona? Has anyone checked Tom and Nance's?

Anonymous said...

And also that other, mysterious corrugated tin building with the padlock.

Phelan text messaged me in France and told me that the pool she lifeguards at had an oak tree, the Millenium Park Bean and several Cubs fans floating in it when she arrived to work yesterday.

I get home tomorrow night. Right now it's 715AM Central Time and I'm drinking a beer. I'll have to relearn happy hour.

Phelan and I are planning to drive to Ames on Thursday. Ellen, we would love to stay at your place (I claim the floor space that's closest to the bathroom and fridge). Thanks for the offer. We'll call you and let you know when we get in town. Oh yeah, what's your mobile number?

Anonymous said...

THANKS for all the painting work.

This a relayed message from ellen through joe. she's in the other room watching "The Postman." She's still in shock that Tom Petty is from the future.
