Get your orders in now!

I am going to make the Straub Beer run on Friday. Anybody that wants me to pick up some of the smooth tasting Straub Beer or Straub Beer light needs to let me know as soon as possible. The price I got on the phone was around $25 a case, but I think I might be able to get them down from that once I talk to them again.
As a reminder - I am picking up a keg for drinking at the farm so the individual cases would be for you to take home.

I still want one case of Straub and one of Straub Lite.

Thanks Ed

Ed, besides negotiating with the fine people at Straub Beer, what have you been doing with your free time? Were you at the game where Glavine got his 300th?

Joe J., how's the new job?

Lisa, who goes to OCB to eat salad? If I would go to such a place it would be for mashed pots and gravy, though I'm quite satisfied with KFC's. Between KFC and Taco Bell, I have quite a collection of sporks I can bring to the farm. Monica's bringing tomatoes and zuchinni. Ed's bringing beer. What are the rest of you bringing?

In Indianapolis there was an all you can eat buffet called Ryan's Steakhouse. Sort of a Ponderosa but 20 times better. It was always funny to see the fat people there. I always wanted to just sit in the parking lot on a friday night and watch the people waddle in. Fat women with fat husbands and fat kids

The job is going pretty well. I kind of got thrown into the fire, but they say that's the best way to learn. I was designing the Metro and Iowa section (which everybody says is the toughest job on the design desk) on my third day, and have been doing it since then. My supervisors way I learned fast and that I'm doing a good job.

Ed, I'll take a case of Straub.

Hello!
We survived the first week...it's a lot of fun...Mike had to go back to Omaha Thursday, so it's been very busy here without him. The fair started 1 hour after we bought Algona Realty! The fair booth was fun...Ed came and helped many of the days, and Mom worked 2 days, and Monica and her boys helped out, too. Lots of good fair food...reindeer sausage sand. with grilled onions and sauerkraut, #1.

They both have failed brakes AT THE SAME TIME. And the oldsmobile has something that Randy explained that I cannot even remember. Water, fuel, sensor, etc. My brain sensored that I would not understand and turned off. Kind if like the car. If you truely were Click and Clack the tappit brothers I would happily make the noise for you.

I had the carpets cleaned Sat.morn. and Joe and Joe4 helped move ugly furniture downstairs and brought up mod 50's pieces (Mike is driving up today with a rental van and some of our modpieces and artwork)...so,we're changing the whole look of the office and haven't spent a dime (Oh, we did buy a new receptionist desk)...we'll paint this weekend....thanks to all who helped, especially Mom and Dad for taking care of Seamus!

We had a nice party last night at Tom and Nance's to celebrate little Don's visit...it was VERY nice...he (Don) is so talkative, seems to be doing very well.

I have a cute/funny story. Donny has private swim lessons with the Swim Team Coach...Coach Kathy. She asked me what he should learn and I said, "Of course, the crawl...but, mostly the ability to save himself"...such as if he falls into the water (unattended)...I want him to not panic and have the ability to float/swim to safety. She agreed. During his first lesson, Coach asked him about jumping off the low diving board and he was trepiditious...then, excited. The first two times he jumped off...he screamed, "Have mercy!" the whole way into the water. The third time...he screamed while under water...that was funny. Now, he is enthusiastic (cannon balls and all) and does it all the time and had me take pix so he could show all his friends at school. He loves the diving board. :-) This morning, we had the pool to oursleves and Eli, Liam and I watched his lesson. She asked him about the high dive and he replied, "sure." Coach Kathy said that the first time he does it that **I** should go up there with him and help him along. Now **I** was trepiditous. :-( I put on a brave face and said, "Sure!" Now, this diving board is NOT a platform...it is a narrow, springy board. Walking across it with an 8 year old that could, at any moment, grab on to me and freak...was nerve wracking. Coach Kathy looked really far away (like a small dot in the middle of the ocean) and I kept reassuring Donny (and, myself) that all would be fine. Once he got to the end, I gave him a, "loving," tap as I wanted him IN the water so I could deal with my own fears. Trying to make a 180 degree turn on a board that is reverberating, from his jump, with my size 10 flip flops...was freightening to say the least. The hand rails looked to be miles away and I contemplated jumping into the water instead of FALLing into it. Some how, by the grace of God, I reached the handrail and made my way to safety. Coach Kathy asked if he wanted to do it again and I quickly responded, "Oh...I think that's enough for today!" Whew...for now.

It' great to have any kid feel comfortable in the water. Good for you guys for helping Donny out. (Caveat: we don't want kids to be TOO comfortable in the water.

I am wondering... What's super about Super Tuesday? I mean, what's it all about?

I'm making pulled pork sandwiches and corn on the cobb.

For all of you who don't like Hillary, you have to admit she does very well during the debates. She doesn't hesitate and she sounds like she knows what she's talking about. I don't like that she called Obama naive though.

Anonymous said...

I don't like her. Biden is better qualified but since he isn't the media darling he doesn't get his sound bites played over and over by the press.

There is one thing that Hillary does that telegraphs (to me) that despite her emphatic nature she is not 100% sure of her standing. Everytime she makes a strong statement she immediately will make a head nod. Like shaking her head "Yes" to herself. Much like a kids who has to recite something by rote in second grade and at the end will head nod.

I know this is completely pop psychology but has anyone else noticed this and came to the same conclusion?

And "I'm your girl!" What's up with that? That will come back to haunt her is some way.

By the way Olberman stinks as a moderater. He let them deviate from the questions and insert whatever sound bites they wanted. He seemed more uptight than any of the candidates. I guess it's easier for him to be a snarky, sneeering politcal commentator than to do a job Chris Mathews is better suited for.

But, the problem with Matthews is he wants Hillary to win. He tries to maintain a neutral postion on his shows but he can't help but let his preference be known.

Here's how comfortable my kids feel in water:
Mary will jump unattended into 6 feet of water and sink to the bottom. When she does rise to the top she doesn't automatically pull her head out and breathe.
Emma will happily dive head first into 12 inches of water. I've caught her in mid air. When she jumped off the board at swim lessons this year she said, "I'm cool!"

Anonymous said...

Emma IS cool.

Another thing about the debate last night. Edwards, in his effort to pander to the AFL-CIO crowd said "I've been on hundreds of picket lines. I was just on a picket line on Saturday."

On Saturday he spent 10 minutes on a picket line. He was there to film a small bit for a new commercial. This according to the MSNBC "Truth Squad".

Ugh, I forgot that the debate was on and watched "The Covenant" instead. As I predicted, it was a dumb movie. This weekend is the Straw Poll in Ames. Andy's cousin, who I'm good friends with, is the head of the Romney Campaign in SW Iowa. So, we are going to be hosting some of his family and other young republican friends Saturday night after they all do their straw polling. I think I'll hang my Hillary sticker up. I still haven't made a decision, and I don't like the idea of having the same 2 families having so much power for sooo long, but I do like her.

Anonymous said...

Women will almost always follow a strong statement with a body language modifier to soften the message, because if they don't, they're automatically perceived as a bitch. Hillary has probably unconsciously changed her body language "softener" to a stronger, more emphatic assertion so as not to appear weak. "I'm your girl" is a way of saying "Yes, I am a girl and I like it." To counter the rap that she's cold and unfeminine. I'm no Hillary fan, but she's a perfect example of how a smart, leadership-oriented woman is damned whichever way she leans. If she's strong and assertive, she's a bitch. If she gets angry (even without losing her cool) she's "having a hissy fit." If she softens her message, she's weak. Look at all the successful political woman leaders of this century. Almost without exception they wetre either so old or so unattractive as to be effectively androgynous. If you look womanly, you can't win. It's just in the culture - women judge other women as unfairly as men do. Why?

Anonymous said...

I'm tired of hearing Obama say Hillary voted for the war- we know!. I'm tired of Hillary saying Obama is naive- I think one or two sound bites made a point but now it's just beating a dead horse. And I'm tired of hearing Romney use to be pro-choice.

Anonymous said...

Oh - I already said this, but it was a long time ago. Ed - I'll take one case of each, and thank you for going to get it. How much does your car hold? Does this mean you won't be at the farm this weekend? (That's OK, I just want to know.) I sure hope it cools off by Labor Day.

I became a BIG brother a few minutes ago. My Mom and sister, Nadia, are doing fine. My sister weighs 7 pound and 6 ounces.

Anonymous said...

Congrats to big brother Donny. I like the name Nadia.

I really don't know who I'll vote for. I agree with Tom about Biden. I thought he did great yesterday and I"ve always enjoyed seeing him on the talk shows for the last few years. I like him, but I'm sure I'll either go for HIllary or Obama. Did that crochety dude from Alaska drop out?
I also agree with Tom about Chris Matthews' crush on HIllary. He loved the "I'm your girl" comment. I still love Chris though, and TIm Russert.

Anonymous said...

Congrats Donny - you will be an awesome big brother.

Em- that's what is soooooo frustrating about the media. They've already anointed Hillary and Obama as the ones who will get the nomination. Even when a smart guy like Biden does well he gets virtually no coverage. For the next couple of days it will be all about "I'm your girl."

By the way, it was revealed that last night Obama was not altogether truthful when revisiting his recent comments about us going into Pakistan to get Bin Laden. I'm unsure of the specifics but when I am I will relay them.

It's been observed by the political wonks that all the lower tier candidates are pretty much resigned to the fact that Hillary will eventually be the one to beat. So the best they can hope for is to be the one in second place and hope that Hillary screws up somewhere. For that reason they are not confronting her. But, at the same time they are all pouncing on Obama.

Tom

You gotta respect Obama for not taking money from lobbyists and PACs. IF I did not have a good choice for a non white male candidate, I woudl vote for Biden. I think both Hill and Obama are strong candidates and as I've said earlier, it's time for someone other than a white male. Again, no disrespect to white males.

Here is a quote from many similar on that truthsquad blog:

"Obama is correct in his statement. He never said he would IMMEDIATELY go in there unilaterally. He first indicated that he would work with Musharraf, then only when Musharraf wouldn't act would Obama act.

Dodd misrepresented Obama's statement, making Obama's first choice appear to be attack Pakistan unilaterally. That is not his first choice, which is working with Musharraf.

Furthermore, the next paragraph of his speech discusses working the Pakistani government:
"And Pakistan needs more than F-16s to combat extremism. As the Pakistani government increases investment in secular education to counter radical madrasas, my Administration will increase America's commitment. We must help Pakistan invest in the provinces along the Afghan border, so that the extremists' program of hate is met with one of hope. And we must not turn a blind eye to elections that are neither free nor fair -- our goal is not simply an ally in Pakistan, it is a democratic ally. "

and:

"Yesterday on the way home, I heard Gingrich of all people making a very interesting presentation somewhere about the soundbite media - how it is a dangerous development for the democratic process in our country - and he actually threw in a few examples of where it had distorted Obama's statements.

Obama has the Bill Bradley problem. He develops thoughts, which direct audiences can appreciate, but those thoughts get reduced to soundbites - by people who value quickness over content consistency - before most people hear/read them."

OK, I promise not to quote any more blogs. The Democrats are beginning to pick on each other instead of present their own ideas, and they might find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory if they keep it up.

Ugh, politics. I don't have the patience for politics today. I'm so over listening to prepackaged slop spew from the mouths of pundits.
Who's going to the game before labor day?

Anonymous said...

I don't think there is anything wrong with being excited about the fact that the country could have someone other than a white male as president. It's a sign of progress that is long overdue. As I said, I wouldn't vote for Hill or Obama if I didn't think they were a good choice. IT's too bad for Biden, but that's why they (H & O) are media darlings. Much of the country shares my enthusiasm about our country finally progressing forward in this fashion. Biden should have run in '04. I certainly like him better than Kerry.

Tom's Tastey Tip of The Week:

For all you mad scientists who might want to keep some brains in jars: add a slice of lemon to each jar for freshness.

Anonymous said...

Congratulations, Donny! Best wishes to that new baby sister.

Ok Spaghetti talk.

Does anyone want spaghetti and meatballs at the farm?

If so - would you be willing to be a part of the spaghetti making team? Each of us makes up a batch of sauce and meat balls, and boils some ziti ahead of time so we can just dip it in hot water when we get there. Are you agreeable? If so, please make it official by saying so. If a different pasta is wished for - this is the place to come to agreement.

Anonymous said...

I think we should use Pantalone pasta, which is pasta that looks like pantaloons. You eat it with a canitlever.

OK all you diabetics and doctors and nurses: I'm considering going on a fairly new injectable diabetic medicine called Byetta. I've done some research and aside from the possible initial 2 to 8 weeks of nausea it looks pretty good. Do any of you know any reasons why I should not?

Anonymous said...

I plan to eat what I kill.

Are we done with political talk? Dodd is going to be our next president and some of you seem to have a hard time accepting that.

Let's talk about what the Irish are going to do to GTech. Does their defense have any speed this year?

I like spaghetti. And Betty. I hope to see them both at the farm.

Anonymous said...

anonymous,

Can you do that?

I have never heard of the medicine you are talking about, Cathy. Is it an insulin or is it something that makes your body better utilize the insulin you are producing? Just curious.

Are any of your cars up and running Lisa?

This just in from HQ: URGENT - Sector D2-88l41 (South Central Iowa) is seeing some highly irregular activity. Intel reports some unusual traffic patterns and occasional massing of primary suspects. Probing of the waterways by "River People" and some aerial activity are being observed.

All teams should be prepared to report to Sector D2-88l41. Perhaps as early as the end of this month. Bring adequate supplies as this may be a several day long operation.

Brevet Major Tom

Anonymous said...

Re: Urgent: activity report sector D2-88141. Advise cover clothing to blend in with natives and possible suspects. Old, paint-spattered or torn clothing, bandannas, out-of-style sneakers suggested. Teams will designate members to alternate watches operating under cover as "painters."
Note: As of now, no refrigeration available. Massive deployment of ice and coolers advised. Malt beverages (source: PA) advised and encouraged, as well as large quantities of H2O to maintain hydration. Unknown if potable H2O supply line reestablished.
Team J will supply bierocs and participate in pantaloon feed.

Anonymous said...

Who isn't coming to the farm? Easier question than who is I would guess.

Anonymous said...

Lisa, Byetta is not insulin. It contains a GLP-1 protein (which is why it has to be injected) that's deficient in diabetics, that controls post-prandial glucose spikes and slows digestion, with the same effects. It's not for type 1's. It reduces fbc and A1c numbers significantly. It's also been on the market longer than I thought - since 2005 - so I think I might give it a try. I don't know if it's covered by my insurance yet. Yikes!

Anonymous said...

Cathy - I guess I've waited to commit (or not) to the painting weekend until now. I thought perhaps I would be able to swing down just for a day on Sunday. However, it is with regrets that I must say that is not possible. We leave for vacation the end of next week and I have a lot to get squared away before we go. Sorry.

Is it true that the farm has no fridge what-so-ever?

Tom

Anonymous said...

Ask you insurer. It's amazing what insurance won't cover. If they do cover it, that would be great. Always worth a try.

I'm going to try a pen soon. The idea of having something purse sized to haul around sounds wonderful.

cheers!

So Cathy and Lisa are making spaghetti so far. Anyone else?

Also regarding the kids olympics... we talked a lot about that last summer but not again yet... does anyone want to call me about that? Water balloon races, who stole the cookie from the cookie jar? regular foot race? other ideas? gift bags? Please call me if you are a part of this.

Spag. sounds good- that's always a very comforting supper after a long day of painting. What else are people bringing? Who's bringing dessert?

Molly stayed with us last night on her way home from Grace's house. We put the Magic Bullet to use to make margaritas to keep us hydrated while watching for possible terrorist activity. Mia played "Jennifer," a store clerk that liked to sell dog toys and sleep in other people's beds. (She really said that) Jennifer also liked to wear her hair in her face and alwasy kneeled on one knee when helping a customer. She was very intense.

Spaghetti at the farm sounds weird to me...it's a grilling weekend,in my mind...spaghetti on Christmas may be a new trsdition :-) The Mayor just came in a talked with me and looked around...he said Druggist's Mutual will find out in a few weeks about an expansion from their California office...100 new Algona jobs (houses)!

Anonymous said...

Oh,I can bring sauce, too. Are we premaking noodles though? I think we should just do 'em there. Kids could also do earth worm races- just pick up two containers of baiting worms on the way down. I have a sample kids Seen It DVD- we could do something with that.

How many nights are there? Three? So...one night chops, one spaghetti and then, one more...yes?
Hmm, how 'bout burgers/dogs/brats? We can get preformed frozen patties from Sarah's. We, even, have super little ones (McD-size) for the chittlin's. That with beans and chips would be way easy and not take a lot of fridge room and pre-time. Just an idea.

Anonymous said...

Tom - don't worry about this weekend - you'll get a chance to paint Labor Day weekend. That's what my urgent notice was about. We've all been too busy all summer to get it done, but as long as the front door and back door areas are completed, so people can go in and out unobstructed, (Stevo and I and possibly the Richardsons will make sure of that this weekend) we should have no trouble finishing it up that weekend with all the available slave - er, volunteer laborers, child-watchers and kibitzers in attendance.
Since you have a truck, maybe people in the Algona area could keep their eyes open for a fridge (in consultation with Mom and Dad, of course) I will measure the space for it this weekend - it's surprisingly smaller than you might think.
I'm all obsessed with the painting thing, so I'll defer to anyone else as far as all athletic/competitive activities are concerned. That means I don' wanna do nothin about it.

Anonymous said...

I meant...preP-time.

Our garage fridge which works fine, but ain't awesome can be donated to the farm...if no one objects.

Anonymous said...

Maybe that was Christmas that we talked about for the spagetti. Everyone always seems to bring enough food to eat (and then some!) and grilling won't heat up the kitchen. But mostacciolli and meatballs, yum. What do you guys think? It seems to me that there's one official "feast" with the chops or steaks and sides, and somehow there's still tons of food for all the other meals. I like the gauntlet of grills by the patio. Plus I always like the random element of whatever people bring. I just hope it cools down by then.
Note: there is not "limited" fridge space. There is "no" fridge space, unless you want to store your crackers and cereal in there.

Anonymous said...

Nance, if your garage fridge fits, I think that WOULD be awesome. Monica's old one didn't, but I'll measure and we'll see.

Anonymous said...

Regarding our garage fridge...we may not come until Sunday or late Saturday on Labor Day weekend...so it wouldn't be there until then. FTR: We have another fridge, in our basement, that goes virtually unused and we will put it in its place...so we can definitely donate one. :-)

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I think it's on the small side.

Anonymous said...

Oh and it's yellow...so that would be nice and cheery.

Is it possible to rent a refrigerator from a used appliance dealer or equipment rental place in Lamoni for the weekend?

Oh, Betty will be wearing her saline insulin pump (just to get used to working with it and wearing it.) that weekend! She will get it on the 27th and if she likes it, which she thinks she will, she will get her own real insulin pump and start pumping a week or two later. :-) LOL...she is the little traveler this week...first off to Jim and Erin's and now now at Joe and Monica's. She is having a blast!

This will be my final political comment for today:

Emily – your argument completely lacks any rational thought. This provides further evidence that a woman should not be president. President of the local garden club maybe. But, not president of the greatest country in the history of the world. A country of unprecedented freedom and opportunity. A country of the greatest technological, scientific and political achievements. (Thank you White Men)

Obama – he has virtually no experience beyond being a “community organizer”. Do we really want that?

Yes, this was written in jest. But, I still find it stupefying that you are basing any part of your decision on gender or race.

We were doing a remote recording session with Fred Thompson when we were considering him to be the new voice of Beef. At the end of the session I told him he had one of my favorite one-liners from Movie history. He stopped me and said, "Let me guess...Russians don't take a dump with havin' a plan." Everybody laughed and there was much joy. The sound guy was still recording. I have an mp3 for proof.

TOM- I have to agree with Emily. I think we should cook the pasta when we get to the farm.

Does anybody want to see a pic of my broken toe? I mean, I wasn't rushed to Mason City for emergency surgery like some people we may know. But it is kind of gross. Maybe Pat will post it if we're having a slow blog week.

ED - Needless to say (since you haven't heard from me) I wont be joining you on your journey across the Ohio River Valley. I have much to do before my girlfriend and I go on vacation next week. Some other year perhaps. Maybe by 2008 they'll have invented the molecular beer teleportation machine and this drive will no longer be necessary. Regardless, I'm sorry.

Anonymous said...

Of course you don't understand. That is because you are armed with what is known as the "invisible knapsack." Being a white male you automatically have had advantages in your life that others have not had. That is not to say that you haven't worked hard to achieve you success. I have a knapsack too, because I'm white, but mine is not as well stocked as yours because I am not a man. So, it comes as no surprise to me that you can't understand why those different from you are excited about the possibility of a president that is different from you. IT's called progress and some people don't see it that way, but I do and I think it's very important.

Anonymous said...

I think I'm voting for Hillary.

Anonymous said...

Obama has experience being a Congressman. What kind of experience do you need? Why do you need to know how to do "business as usual" if you're not planning to do business as usual? How much experience did George Washington have? Or Ronald Reagan? (can't believe I'm invoking Reagan, yuck) What are the job requirements?

Anonymous said...

I actually think that Obama will not get it this time, because of his youth, not because of his race. (He's older than Kennedy was when he ran, though, I think)But he'll be back. Anyway, so far I'm leaning toward him. America needs a president with "Hussein" in his name.

Anonymous said...

Ummm – Reagan was a governor and Washington a general of an army.

Knapsack!!? Gimme a break!

Any decision that is based in any small part on race or gender is flawed – bottom line. Isn’t that what liberals have been pining for all these years?

Tom

Anonymous said...

Tom...that's not exactly what Emily said...Hey, I would have come out for Mrs. Biden :-(
Did you have a good turnout? Nance, did you see her, did you like her?
Obama's office is just a few feet from my back door, I'll go over there tomorrow and tell them my brother thinks he's no more than a community organizer!! But, that's a good thing, it takes a village organizer. I'm not Barack Obama, and I approved of this message.

No vote from me on pasta at the farm.

I will vote for Hillary if she dumps Clinton as her partner and reverts to her maiden name. She needs to show some integrity. As of now I view her as the highest paid prostitute in the land. If only you could pick and choose the qualities from the different candidates to come up with what you want. If you took all of Obama's attributes and all of Hillary's attributes and picked out what you wanted you could assemble a white male! With loads of knapsacks!

I woke up around 4 am today and puttered around the house for awhile before going in early to work. An absolutely great bad movie was on. "Hot Rods to Hell" circa 1968 with Dana Andrews. For me it replaced "Valley of the Dolls 2" and "Plan Nine from OUter Space" atop the list of best/worst ever. I was spellbound.

Imagine if I said I wasn't going to vote for Hillary. The only reason I give you is because she is a woman. What would the reaction be? 6/14th's of the family would string me up.

I am not going to the pick of the Straub Beer this week - going to the farm in Soutern Iowa instead.

As far as what people will owe for the Keg - can't say until we know how many people show up.

As far as presidential politics go - I used to think it didn't matter. That our government was set up in such a way that any one person would not be able to do too much damage, but I have been proved wrong.

To be fair...Emily did not say that the only reason she would choose either Barack or Hillary was race or gender. That it's high time for a non-white or non-male to be elected is, I think, a legitimate factor in making a voting decision. Not the only or most important reason, but in the spirit of affirmative action I say go for it. Of course, look where electing the formerly shunned demographic of stupid, lying idiots got us.

Emily said, "...it's time for someone other than a white male." It's wrong to say or think this. That's my point.

She and anyone else can insulate the statement with references to the past or perceived advantages for some. However, that statement, by definition is bigotry.

Tom

Anonymous said...

I don't think it is wrong to say or think this in light of the fact that there are viable options now availble to us.

Anonymous said...

One more thing Tom, if you want to take one thing I said and harp on it and twist it and take it out of context, ignoring the bigger picture,to use it as sound byte, then you are doing exactly what you accuse the media of doing.

Anonymous said...

The only reason I'm "harping" on this facet of your argument is because it's the only part of your argument that is flawed. Flawed in a big way.

I agree that there are other viable options aside from a white male. But, not including white males as an option without knowing the qualities of all the candidates is well,....irresponsible.

Tom

Anonymous said...

How do you know that I don't know the qualities of the other candidates?

How was Mrs. Biden?

Anonymous said...

Because no one really knows. The campaign has really just started and we haven't had chance to hear much from the second tier candidates. Mostly because the media have latched onto Hillary and Obama and give no one else any coverage.

She's not as hot as Mrs Fred Thompson

Tom

Anonymous said...

Hmmm... interesting. I ask about a presidential candidate's wife and your response has only to do with what she looks like.

Anonymous said...

I'm voting for him - not her.

Anonymous said...

Heck, I'd rather have Mrs. Fred Thompson as an intern than Hillary.

Anonymous said...

Of course, I'd also rather have a Big Mac than Hillary.

I like Obama. But it does bother me when he criticizes other candidates on how they voted on the war considering he, at the time, was probably voting on legislation on whether or not to have milk with school lunches. He is inexperienced as a politician. But that might be a good thing.

Look at Woodrow Wilson. He was served one stint as Governor of New Jersey before being elected president. His experience prior to that was President of Princeton University. Not a career statesman. His lack of experience in Washington probably allowed him to be more of an idealistic visionary rather than politicking politicker. After his death, the politicians took over the government and the League of Nations was never fully realized.

But Wilson had a huge knapsack – probably full of fun things like Skull and Bones, Ivy League Education, Presbyterian upbringing and a great great grandparents who conceived on Plymouth Rock.

This brings me to my point, maybe we shouldn’t hold a candidate’s knapsack against them. Even if they are white haired, protestant men puffy from years of being millionaires. One of them might be the right man for the job. Like Hillary.

I’m not completely sure where I stand politically, but I do know that I am in favor of Bavarian refugees who make good beer. I’ll take one case of Straub. I also believe in the sons of Irish Chicago cops who coach football at Midwestern Universities. Let’s hope Callahan and the Huskers put up at least 40 against Nevada. Who’s with me?!!!

****crickets****

Oh well. Let’s at least hope for good weather over Labor Day.

The children are nestled all snug in their beds (I hope)...and, I am here to tell you about Dr. Jill Biden.
She was very nice (of course)and pretty. I strongly suggested the Cajun Shrimp Salad (she's a health nut) and she obliged me. She said it was, "fabulous!" She talked about riding a 27 mile stretch during RAGBRAI and said it was challenging because she is a runner and not a biker. Ha...I told her I was neither and she said, "Well, you're a busy young Mom." :-) I told her about Eli and Liam and she told me about her sons Beau (Delaware Attorney General) and Hunter (Washington Attorney). She said that she was looking forward to the State Fair and I said that we were too. I asked her if she would be biking there and she laughed and said, "no, I think we'll drive." She and her group were fully aware of and excited to see the BIG Cheeto and asked me to show it to them! I was really embarrassed as the Cheeto was barely bigger than a McNugget...in its' hay day. She politely smiled, but marveled at the bullet proof glass. They made their exit around 3pm (we close at 2pm)...I welcomed them back and she said they would, "definitely return." She was friendly and gracious and I enjoyed our time together.

DId anyone see The Good Shepard? I am not sure if the depiction in the movie was accurate, but it made me despise the whole idea of skull n bones.

Nance, thank you for the enlightening report re Dr. Biden.

Anonymous said...

Just doin' my part. :-)

Anonymous said...

I don't think so highly of Biden now that I know his sons' names - oh and that coupled with the fact that he's a white male.

Anonymous said...

He is? Hmm...Jill never mentioned that.

Anonymous said...

I know the League of Nations never really got going but that League of Extraordinary Gentlemen sure kicked butt, didn't they?

Anonymous said...

Didn't see the movie. If they did kick butt it's probably 'cause they had those knapsack thingys I keep hearing about.

Tom

Nawww....They had Sean Connery who has weapons, not knapsacks. Was William H. Macy in that one? He seems to show up in these buddy superhero motorcycle mid-life-crisis flicks. Love those Opie ears.

I think I heard that the Huskers were practicing in full gear this week (temps high 90's, humidity to make a rain forest shrivel up with an inferiority complex). In June we had 1/4 inch of rain. Now it rains every night and half the days, yet the thermometer never goes below 90. In fact, the weatherman got all excited last night because we can expect a big cooldown next Friday, with a high of only 90. I think there's mildew growing in my toaster. Definitely glow-in-the-dark mushrooms under the fridge.

Here's a comment made by a locl spoertscaster that reminded me of Tom's comment about Mrs. Biden.
He was covering the LA Galaxy game and he said "Beckham didn't play much but he did take his shirt off at the end of the match which surly appeals to his female fans, right Laura?" (addressing the female anahor)Laura promptly replied, " I just want to see him play. He can keep his shirt on, I would just like to see him get more minutes on the field."

Tom, you should'nt harp on Emily for her reason for supporting Hillary. It makes at least as much sense as any reason someone could use to justify voting for George Bush. Des, I should be getting those Cyclone tickets soon. I will have to mail them to you. I have your address as 200 W. Menomonee #200. If this is not correct, get the right address to me. By the way, Chuck and I will be attending the game. We have 4 tickets and the wives arent comming. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the farm and spending time on a ladder with a paintbrush. Ed, if you would put me down for a case of Straub Lite, I'm sure I could put it to good use. Thanks. Bob

Anonymous said...

Bob, you rarely blog, and then when you do you spew this venom comparing me to those misguided souls out there who voted for Bush, not only once, but twice.

Anonymous said...

i voted for him 3 times!

Anonymous said...

Okay - you guys are right. Thanks for showing me the light.

Now I can't wait for a Presidential candidate who is a Aleutian Gay Transvestite Vegan to vote for. Now that's progress!

Okay-so I had a McDonald's double quarter pounder with cheese meal for lunch. Was that bad? Am I supposed to hate McDonald's the way I'm supposed to hate Wal-Mart? I want to do the right thing.

Betty says we can't eat KFC anymore because of how they treat their chickens.

I'm taking a position against spagetti at the farm. Hot afternoon and spagetti doesn't sound good and eating off paper plates we'll all get splatter stains.

Ed if it's not too late get me 2 cases not the lite stuff.

Pete, What color tees do you and Mely want?

Well, just got back from FL, where the heat index was 115 the day we flew in, in jeans. I don't like Miami Beach. Or, maybe you need February and money to enjoy it. But it seemed like combination of Spring Break and Hollywood. It's all concrete - no greenery anywhere. Clearwater was very affordable - it's home to the Scientology headquarters. Boca was extraordinarily beautiful. Loved it. Sunday Josh will fly to Connecticut for another interview in some town north of NYC. Then he has one interview lined up for later this fall in Dallas. Right now, I'm hoping for Boca. Even if it is expensive to live there.

What colors u got?

Anonymous said...

Orange or natural...both w/ black screening.

Anonymous said...

Pat - speaking as one who has lived north of NYC I highly recommend living there. It's topography is a lot like northern minnesota but with more hills and even what could be called mountains. Great camping and tons of day trips to make. Depending on where you are the City is just a quick train trip away.

Tom

Anonymous said...

Yeah I think I could be happy there. I just want to KNOW. Where, I mean.
p

Anonymous said...

Yes, the **not knowing** can be frustrating. I felt that way, too, when we were deciding between Algona and a Minneapolis suburb. Just keep in mind, that the journey (this including) can be very exciting and, sometimes the best part of the trip!
Donny's last night is tonight. :-( He had his final Swim Lesson, this afternoon, and the boys played at the pool...a perfect day. The boys are watching a pay-preview called..."Something, Something, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." Then, we're gonna light a bon fire and make s'mores...when Tom gets home from work. Hope he remembers the Hershey's as he has eaten them all! :-<> Tomorrow...Donny is off, with the Kennedy's, on a trip to Okoboji...fun, fun! :-)

Anonymous said...

An additional remark about Donny and the HIGH dive...he loves it! He goes off, by himself, and often. However, it is very cute, "how," he does it. Actually, he does it EXACTLY like my friend, Jennifer's, daughter used to...just last year when she was 11 and visiting here. He walks out onto the board confident, yet slow. He stops just short of the end, and ever so slowly and carefully takes one foot and just sorta, kinda and slow-motion-like...steps off...barely...but, enough. He pops up quickly outta the water and swims to the side. Gets up and out...proud and looking for adulations. We hoot and hollar!
