University of Nebraska was booted from the Association of American Universities after a 103 year membership and after 10 years of being the 63rd rated member (of 63 schools). The Association is composed of research universities and membership was likely a pre-requisite to membership in the Big 10 (all other Big 10 schools are members). There is no appeal. This is the first time in the 111 year history of the Association that a member school has been voted out.

I read about this. It's huge news.

Here's info from the industry newspaper.
http://chronicle.com/article/U-of-Nebraska-Lincoln-Is/127353/

"What put Nebraska at a particular disadvantage within the AAU is that the university's medical school is part of the statewide system, but not part of the flagship Lincoln campus. So the medical school's research dollars do not count toward Lincoln's AAU numbers. In an analysis conducted last year by The Chronicle, Nebraska's system as a whole outpaces at least 11 current AAU members."

Yeah like Iowa, Illinois, U of M etc. don't have medical schools. Other excuses offered by the Bugeaters include the disadvantage of the university's strong commitment as a land grant school , a factor which doesn't, somehow, seem to affect Penn State, Michigan State or Purdue, off the top of my head. Little Red also complains about not being able to count ag-based research dollars (so the other Big 10 schools don't do ag research?).
I'd read that the Big10 faculties were grumbling about Nebraska joining.
Of course, Iowa State, a solid member in good standing, also can't count medical research dollars (no med school) and, as a land grant university somehow achieves excellence. And I suppose Iowa State doesn't engage in any non-counting ag-based research either, right?
It kind of blows my mind that the school which designed NASCAR safety rails and developed the processes to produce the McRib is somehow not an elite research institution. Oh well, I guess considering the location of the school a 102 year run is pretty impressive.

Well, if nothing else they certainly had ample warning.

I read about this. It's the administration's own fault for adopting a structure that didn't include its strongest school.

Happy Birthday. Sean.

How's that Porsche your mom said she was thinking of getting you?

In bigger news than the Bin Laden bit (congratulations, Ricky Stanzi - well done)....We've never been hard core couponers when grocery shopping. However, on Sunday our bill was $360 and after discounts and coupons it was $257. Saved over a hundred clams!

We did this sticking to a needs list. Meaning just because we had a coupon for Gold Bond medicated itch powder we didn't use it. We bought only foods and goods we normally would on a shoppping trip.

Sawe the story three times about the Phillies-Mets game erupting in a spontaneous celebration during the ninth inning. I had to read the paper to get the final score.

Mission accomplished...for real.

Oh, don't act like Obama did anything special. He just did what any other president would have done. He turned it over to the spooks and said, "Go get him."

I would say Obama had the smarts to know good intel when he heard it. Of course those who deserve the most credit are those that gathered the intel and those that carreid out the mission.

Congrats to you Sean and Caitlin!

Well, he did it Obama-style which means thoughtfully, carefully, examining all possibilities, preparing for exigencies instead of rushing in cowboy-style so it was mission accomplished quickly with no American casualties and minimal loss of innocent life. So yeah, job well done. Nobody's canonizing him, but let's give credit where credit is due.

I commend him on his sly strategy of cutting off the ending of the Trump show - hahahahaha!

Obama will release a photo today of bin laden, shot above the left eye...also the video of the burial at sea.
