So it seems only fitting that with a tournament with so many upsets that the championship game would be such an ugly dog fight. In the end, only one person, Frank, our champion, picked UConn to win the National Championship. Mike LaVelle and I both picked the most games correctly at 40. Congratulations Frank! You will recieve a bottle of whisky at the appropriate time (that time being when I can drink it with you).
Here are the final standings:

Congrats Frank! And, close one, Ed.
That was a really boring final game.
And, don't forget to check Mikey's bday, below!

grumble, grumble, congrats frank, grumble.
Drove home from Indiana yesterday in Stevo's mom's car, which we are buying. 1997 Buick Regal with 70,000 miles, shiny dark red and with the exception of a tiny dent by the driver's door handle, it looks like it just drove off the lot. I get happy just pushing the lock button. Stevo and Joe are somewhere in Tennesee or Kentucky right now with JoAnne's furniture and some pieces for family members down there, in a rental truck packed like a jenga game. Stevo really is the master of the moving truck. Joanne gave us our Christmas present for next year - a hand pieced quilt in browns, blues and greens - it's gorgeous and is sort of a mix of modern-looking and traditional. She has made or is making one for each of her kids. I took Oscar for a walk by a pond while truck-loading was going on and he warned me "Tatie said don't tep in da doose poop."
Congrats Frank - you suck.
I'm so glad I didn't stay up to watch that game. It started at 930 out here. That's about my beddy bye time. Sad but true.
Stevo should be in charge of loading the clowns in one of those tiny cars.
Has anyone been to see Sucker Punch in the theater yet? Just wondering what they thought. Girls running around in their underwear blowing stuff up can't be all bad. Girl empowerment, I say.
Tom
I'm sure you mean Grrl Power.
geez Tom...real girl power will be on display tonight when Notre Dame WOMEN take on Texas A&M for the championship of the world...I can guarantee a better game than the boys game...
Tom will be sleeping.
I thank you for your grudging congratulations. Yes, my complete and utter dominance over all of you in this tourney was due to superior sports knowledge, statistical analysis, and the help of my animal spirit guide Wile E. Coyote (Super-genius). It was in no way whatsoever pure luck and guessing that lead me to my victory over you, the losers.
Blah, blah, blah. My name is Frank. I won the bracket. I exercise 7/7 days a week. I run 7 miles at a time. Blah, blah, blah...

Go ND women!!
Ohio Farm Bureau has updated its recommendations for veal calves, providing for more humane treatment. For the first 10 weeks of life the calf shall be kept in a pen allowing it to "at least turn around" and after 10 weeks, each calf will be in a pen with at least one other calf.
Thanks for organizing March Madness, Ed!

No veal in my meal!
107 days to RAGBRAI. Sadly, as many of you already know, ride doesn't go trough Algona this year. It's July 24th through the 30th. Here's the route:
Glenwood
Atlantic
Carroll
Boone
Altoona
Grinnell
Coralville
Davenport
I want to do it this year. It's hard to foresee many days I'll be able to do, but the second half of that route sounds like a lot of fun. Starting in Altoona, it would be fun to all meet in Des Moines and then ride from Altoona to Grinnell the following day. Grinnell is a college town, which is cool. Coralville, being adjacent to Iowa City, is also a fun stop - and then on to the Quad Cities. Jim and Erin, do you have stretch of carpet for a smelly guy to sleep on?
Who's with me?
I'll do it if you ride a unicycle.
I was just on the RAGBRAI website, they have a suggested training schedule beginning this Sunday. It doesn't look too hard...The Des moines idea sounds like alot of fun except I was thinking the Atlantic to Carroll and then to Boone looked like the easier days!
It's pretty hilly around Boone.
But you could camp at Ledges State Park, one of the coolest parks in Iowa. You can't reserve a campsite yet but Brian is watching the calendar and the clock to nab one asap. I think he and Joe are already planning on the first three or four days, maybe wind up in Altoona and then back to Des Moines. Molly is planning on driving the rider support vehicle (van) with the kids. We might meet them at the Ledges. Anyone is welcome to crash at our house either before or after.
Rees or Crist?
Correction: I will bring the kids for the first 2 days (going back to our house @ night), then going on without them for the next two. The Ledges is looking like the best party night to me, you all should try to meet us there- Ellen and I will be cookin' up some good stuff while waiting for the crew to arrive. That's my plan right now anyway, we'll see if it all works out!
FUN!!!
Hi. At an AAUW dinner in Algona Friday night Betty and 3 other 8th grade girls received awards for proficiency in math. I have not spoken to her since it happened so I don't know much else. Dad
Rees! No, Crist. Naw, Rees. It's good to have options. In the O backfield I read that they're shifting some fellas around to account for the losses of Allen and Hughes to graduation. The question is whether Woods can be that every down back they need? Don't see why not. I saw Jonas Gray is already a senior. I thought he was supposed to be something special coming out of high school. Did he just not live up to the hype?
Also, can Vandenberg fills Stanzi's shoes?
The Ledges RAGBRAI plan sounds good. Ideally I think I'd like to start that night and go all the way to the Quad Cities, but I'll have to see how the ol'schedule shakes out when the date draws nearer. Fun, indeed.
The new Mumford and Sons is pretty good.
From bleacherreport.com: "Floyd Says Notre Disciplinary Arm Won't Suspend Him"
Good news or not?
I think it's ridiculous after 3 busts he's not going to be suspended for a semester. Didn't Kyle Macalarney have to leave school for a year when a little pot was found in his car? Different substance, but one offense vs. three. HE better be suspended for at least a few games. It makes ND look bad.
p
Tom -
Josh saw Sucker Punch and he agrees. It was fun and also kind of interesting structurally.
p
The ND deal all rests on the shoulder of Residence Life and there is a new director in that position, so you really can't compare the disciplinary actions...this guy is just more reasonable, in my opinion.
That was m.e.
Pat, but was it as good as 'Machete!'?
I saw 'Hannah' today, it was pretty good.
I would have to say no. I don't think he liked any movie as much as Machete.

Hey, everybody. I just got a new job. I'm going to be a graphic designer for Cuisine at Home magazine. It's owned by a small company called August Home Publishing. They produce 5 magazines, and Woodsmith is probably their most popular. It's not easy to leave the Register, but I couldn't pass up the chance to work normal hours and have weekends off. And I heard I'll get to sample a lot of food from the test kitchen. For those familiar with Des Moines, the offices are on Grand Ave close to the Governor's Mansion. So it's pretty close to my house, too.
On RAGBRAI: I'd like to be able to ride from Molly and Brian's house in CB to my house in DM. That would be the first four days. But it'll depend on what time I can get off work at the new job. I'll definitely try to do Days 3 and 4.
Congrats, Joe! That sounds like a wonderful job.
P
Congrats to you Joe! I'm so happy you will have those better hours and wekends off, I bet Brianne is thrilled!!! Yippee!
Also, the Ragbrai Party at the Ledges all depends on whether or not we can secure a campsite, if not the party may be held in Joe or Ellen's backyard.
Wherever we are is where the party will be, right? I'm excited for ragbrai!
Go Joe! Andy and I are also pumped about your new hours, although now I don't know many people with free days to go out to lunch with.
Easter plans? People going to Whittemore?
That wad from Ellen, not l
Grr, was*
Oscar broke his foot Saturday night, jumping off a platform on their backyard playset. He's still in a splint but will get a cast today or tomorrow. We were over there for dinner. While everyone was discussing whether or not it was broken, he held up his foot and said indignantly, "It's not broken! See?"
He also can't understand why we keep telling him he can't walk on it. "Yes I CAN, it just hurts!" I'm sad that the Dr couldn't see him today because the splint they put on in the ER seems ill fitting, even if I rewrap it. He's been crawling around and playing, and standing on one foot while leaning on things so it's not slowing him down too much. Which is why I would feel better if the foot was in a regular cast- the sooner the better!
We'll be seeing Oscar in his cast soon!
Joe - Congrats on the job! I love that magazine - it's one of my favorites. I applied for a job there but they told me that unless I was a chef or had a degree in landscape architecture, they didn;'t want me...
Lisa
Ragbrai party sounds fun and worth a trip to wherever the party is. I won't be biking. I think the longest I've ever biked was about 13 miles. I was pregnant with Sam when I did it. It was totally flat -on the beach path in Orange County.
Poor Oscar. It must be hard to keep him off his foot.
Plans for Easter? I've got lots of egg hunt stuff already.
Oh....poor Oscar.
So, who all is coming to Whittemore for Easter? If we all do the food I think it would actually be easier for Dad than traveling with Mom, as they just got home from Florida.
Plus, the yard is so perfect for the Easter Egg Hunt!
Congrats Joe J!
Oh, yes Joe J. Sorry! Congrats on your new job. I will get a subscription when you start! When do you start?
We will come to Whittemore for Easter and help with food. What shall we have?
Andy, Caroline and I will be coming to Whittemore Saturday morning.
We will be bringing a few hundred chocolate turtles with us also. Literally, a few hundred at least. So those can be used for the egg hunt, too.
We'll bring some kind of food, too. Maybe a green salad?
I'll bring creamed peas and dark chocolate-bacon torte/
Stevo and I can't come until Easter morning - I have a couple students being baptized at the vigil. But we'll get up early and tear right out - be there by 11:00AM at the latest.
I meant to mention that Stevo and I saw the Green Hornet (the movie) TWICE. Because Stevo fell asleep the first time. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, eh? But he woke up for the slam-bang ending and had to see the whole thing, and hey, it's the dollar show. So two weekend dates in a row spent on The Green Hornet. The ironic thing is that I usually like the action flicks and Stevo likes nice movies like romantic comedies, family classics, etc. This is an interesting new dark side to Stevo. Anyway, my recommendation is don't spend more than a couple bucks to see it, but then if you want to see it twice, knock yourself out.
Cathy...you should bring those chocolate/bacon cupcakes! :-)
