In a spectacular misunderstanding sparked by an accidental cell phone call, a worried wife caused SWAT teams to swarm the Winnetka school where her husband works, officials said Tuesday.
The wife received the disturbing, garbled call from her husband's phone Monday evening, Winnetka police said.
"You know how when you sit on your phone when it's in your back pocket and it calls the last number that was dialed? His wife was the last number he'd dialed," said Winnetka police Chief Joseph De Lopez. "The conversation led her to believe there was someone holding him hostage."
In the popular vernacular, it was a butt dial, the bane of many a chagrined cell phone user. This time, it led to a frantic 911 call from a wife. Soon, more than 30 gun-toting officers converged on Carleton Washburne School, which also houses the District 36 offices where the man works.
"He was listening to music and he had, I don't know, hip-hop … or music like that, where there were lyrics that were gangster-like," explained Mark Friedman, interim co-superintendent of District 36. "So there were lyrics on the radio as he was driving home, and she listened to it and became concerned."
YOU ARE ALL INVITED... to help us celebrate Caroline's baptism on Saturday 1/29/10. It will be in Council Bluffs at Queen of Apostles, mass at 4:00 with baptism immediately following. Dinner to celebrate at my parent's house after that. Hope you can come, let us know if you can!
Happy Birthday to an amazing father-in-law and the man who inspired such an awesome husband and father! Thank you for all you do and have done. :-) Just rec'd my copy of "thirteen cats lavelle." CANNOT wait to start reading...the kids too! Thank you Desi! :-)
Ok - here are the updated totals for the Strabu Bowl Pick 'Em:
Name Total Points Tom S. 19 Mike S. 18 Ed 18 Ellen J. 18 Rob Z. 17 Jim 17 Gillian 17 Marianne Z. 17 Nick 16 Joe 3 16 Joe 4 16 Desmond 16 Joe J. 15 Erin 15 Frank 14 Betty 14 Pat 13 Mike L. 13 Brian R. 12
It looks like Jim has taught his kids well. Erin, what happened? Pretty tight race.
I have bison and black bean chili in the crockpot. Bison is the same as buffalo, right? Stupid question? I should google and save face, but I'm not godunov. Trying to potty train Sam but Finn keeps messing with Sam when I make him sit on the potty.
I made pork adobo last night; it was SO YUMMY. For those that don't know, adobo is the national dish of the phillipines. It's basically chunks of pork (or chicken) boiled in vinegar and water with lots of garlic and bay leaves. Served with rice.
So we had our building Christmas party last night at our house, lots of fun, lots of drinking...Mom and Dad were there and enjoyed themselves, and then were at our house at 5a.m. this morning to pick up Mike for the airport "run" to Fort Dodge...pretty good for a couple of 80 year olds! (81 for Dad) So he called a while ago and they were on the plane in Minn/St Paul headed for Atlanta...good time to go! Snowing again!
In Filipino cuisine, adobo refers to a common cooking process indigenous to the Philippines.[1] When the Spanish invaded the Philippines in the late 16th century through Mexico City, they found an indigenous cooking process that involved stewing with vinegar. They referred to this method as "adobo". Over time, dishes prepared in this manner came to be known by this name as well.[1]
I believe that most Filopinos will stir fry the chicken or pork adobo after it has been stewed. Must be stir fried in a very hot pan to crisp the outside.

Review of "thirteen cats lavelle": Spectacular! A gloriously tragic journey. I was "there" when the dog ate his brother, y'all covered your noises with popcorn and Hugo made his way back home. I literally laughed aloud and cried silently. It was a page turner. Creatively written and when I closed the book...I wanted more! Your parents need to get another cat!
Hi Everyone, We are now in FL. Pat met us at the airport at 3:30 yesterday and drove us to our condo. Then while Mom and I took it easy Pat volunteered to go to the grocery store to get some basics: milk, bread, orange juice, Entenman's, etc. When Josh got off work he drove here and we went to dinner at an Italian restaurant, Vulcano's. Very good. We got back to our condo before 8 pm (I think) and we were both ready for bed. I got up about 7:30 this am and Mom slept until nine. We'll just relax today. Thanks for all the birthday greetings. Love, Dad
Luke Harangody stepping in for.....Kevin Garnett??!
First quarter, 2:11, Celtics 28, Raptors 19: Luke Harangody's on the floor early and he just knocked down a 20-foot, off-center, catch-and-shoot and finished a Rajon Rondo with a reverse-layup, drawing the foul. He's getting the minutes that Semih Erden used to see before going missing the past six games. "We just have gone in another direction,” Doc Rivers said before the game. “One reason is because with Kevin being out we need a [power forward], we have two [centers]. Another reason is, Luke in practice – the ones we’ve had – I know I like his energy more. Luke provides more energy and right now with Kevin out, anybody that can provide energy for us on the floor, we’ll take.”
End of first quarter, Celtics 34, Raptors 22Luke Harangody makes Rivers look like a genius, scoring eight points on 4 of 4 shooting. There didn't seem to be a point during his four minutes where he stood still. He was on the floor, he ran the fastbreak, he bobbled a pass here and there, but made up for it with sharp shooting.
I was meeting with an owner from a meat trading company. He had mentioned how at one time he was in the office of the President and CEO of Tyson Foods.
The office is an exact replica of the Oval Office. Same shape, same layout, same furniture right down to the carpet with the presidential seal.
I'm not sure what it says about anyone who would go to this extreme but it does seem very odd.
Baptist "minister" Fred Phelps has declared that his Westboro church will protest at the funerals of all the Tucson victims, including the 9 year old girl....and he declared "Thank God for the violent shooter"... Let's see what happens with this...crazy!!
