Tom wins the Straub Bowl Pick 'Em!

Well - they say that defense wins championships and as it turns out, you don't need a GREAT defense, just a timely one. In spite of giving up 455 total yards the Gene Chizak lead Auburn Tigers pulled it out by, among other things, forcing Oregon to turn the ball over on downs at the goal line late in the game.

Oh - and they got a little help from the freak "He was tackled, but his knee didn't hit the ground" play.

My only hope is that the recently departed Iowa State Basketball coach does the same for his new team as the recently departed Iowa State Football coach.

So anyway - we had an EXTREMELY close contest. In the end there were 12 people within 2 correct picks of the winning total. In fact - there was a tie for the total correct picks. Tom Straub and Ellen Jayjack Reeder BOTH correctly picked 21 of the 35 games. In the tie breaker Tom came out on top by predicting 66 total points in the championship game as opposed to Ellen's 99.

Congratulations Tom! You will be receiving a bottle of Whisky at the farm in Southern Iowa this summer.

BTW - Frank and Betty were the closest in predicting the total points in the championship game. Total points in the final were 41 (22-19) and they had both predicted 42.

Below are the final standings. I would urge each of you to look at your sheet to verify it was correctly tallied.
Tom S. 21
Ellen J. 21
Mike S. 20
Ed 20
Jim 20
Nick 20
Desmond 20
Rob Z. 19
Gillian 19
Joe 3 19
Joe 4 19
Joe J. 19
Marianne Z. 17
Erin 17

Hey! I won something!

My secret was going to the first "expert's picks" page I could find on the internet and making a couple of minor adjustments.

Beyond that, I would have gladly lost the contest if it meant having Auburn losing last night.

Thanks for the whiskey and we can just add it to the community stash at the farm.

Congratulations, Tom!

Re the exercisapalooza: I assume (for future reference) that snow shoveling counts as exercise? Because after three hours of shoveling there's no way I want to do crunches or run stairs. I want to eat something bad for me and take a nap.

Congrats Tom and Ellen!! Wow, what a fun game to watch. Joe had us over for delicious soups and sandwiches.
I wanted to puke when the "color guys" were going on about Chizek.

So, I am entering the Whittemore Chili Cookoff...anyone else???
It's this weekend.

So, dogging out ofthis latest storm....we have 10 inches...what about other? Even Athens, Georgia had a snow storm!

Chicago has gotten about an inch (so far).

Woohoo! Not last place! Congratulations Tom.

So based on the parked cars it looked like we had about 4-5 inches of snow. It looks like it may still be snowing lightly, but it is hard to tell if it is snowing or if snow is just blowing off the tops of buildings.

I will pray for your Mom Mely...I'm glad you're going to see her!

OK, this just came out of the mouth of Representative Bill Schuster (R.Pa.) in the halls of the U.S. Congress regarding the Tucson shooter...
"His favorite book was "Mein Kampf" tells me the guy is on the left. People like to associate Hitler with the right, but, in fact,he was a Socialist himself."

hmmm.

I hope everything turns out all right, Mely.

Two thoughts occur to me as MSNBC gushes over Obama's speeck in Arizona.

1. It appears the White House is keeping to thier adage "Let no crisis go wasted". It would have been approriate for him to say a few words but he broke out his "Great Orator" act.

2. How can ayone give creedance to his words when just a few weeks ago he called Republicans "our enemies"?

I don't think he was referring to all republicans as his enemies. Certainly some of them are his enemies and seek to do him harm. Personally, I liked his speech and it was evident that those in attendace appreciated his words as well.

So I had exercised 5 out of ten days of the new year and then one of the kids gets sick and I can't go to the gym. I get totally out of my routine and it's like starting all over again just when I am finally able to return. I was just getting over the being sore and fatigued part. I guess I could do some sort of exercise at home but it's just not the same.

Obama did what was expected of him, and he did it well. Good thing for Boehner that he didn't have to give such a speech ...I think the Republicans have orator envy.
Best speech of Obama's presidency! Where was John McCain? Really, was he there?

m.e. said...

Ok, I just read that McCain was there...I watched on CSpan and the cameras don't move much!
Also read that Boehner was invited by Obama to ride to Tucson with him on Air Force One, but Boehner declined and attended a cocktail party hosted by his PAC instead!

Tom, you must watch MSNBC for much the same reason as I watch Fox News - to get your blood a-bilin'. I do it in low doses lately for some reason, maybe to conserve energy.

ellen said...

Well I listed to Glenn Beck if I'm in the car when it's on to get my blood a-boilin and he just said he liked the speech. He said Obama pretty much said everything he was suppose to and was appropriate...then he complained about the left-wing media making this too political.

I was in the car on my way to Caroline's 6 month check up. Everything looks good. She's 75% for weight at 18.7 lbs and 97% for height at 27in.

I can't believe she's already 6 mos. old!!

When is Nick's birthday?

Any updates on Mely's mom?

m.e. said...

She will have surgery next week. There something going on between her spine and her hip, and it causes so much pain, she can't walk and can only be in one position, in bed...Mely will fly down next week and hopes to stay for a full month to help her mom recover from what could be a major surgery.
Mely sounds better today than yesterday and is anxious to get there...we were looking at rates yesterday, she found a pretty good one flying into Tapachula. I was on priceline but she was on a site I hadn't heard of, I think it was "cheap air". Flights range from $600-$1600 roundtrip...her Mom screamed "alleluia" when she heard that Mely was coming for a month!

This event in Arizona was a memorial for the dead. But Obama didn't miss a chance to infer some sort of association with his presence and the Congresswoman opening her eyes. He repeated it at least 3 times.

A lot of what he said needed to be said. I'm glad he said it. But the whole thing bordered on a political rally. Some of the things he said should not have been said in at a memeorial. Much akin to that memorial for a Minnesota Senator who died in a plane crash in the early 2000s. A big mememorial was arranged and as soon as the remeniscing about the man was over it turned into a bald faced rally. "Go Vote for the Democrat - do it for (deceased senator)". It was such a turn off that the long held democratic seat went over to a republican.

The White House saw a ready made tradgedy where Obama could pull out his Hope schpeel. And they needed it.

I usually only watch Morning Joe on MSNBC. About the most even handed show on the network.

Finally, I don't EVER recall a politician using the word enemy to describe the opposition....?

In actuality part of me hopes he gets re-elected. It seems that is the only way things get done - have opposing parties in the white house and the legislature.

Did anyone ask the airlines for a medical hardship fair reduction?

What a relief!! Last night I thought my remote was broken. You see, I turned to a channel that was supposed to be showing a memorial service for several people who had been murdered by some deranged guy who never listened to talk radio, but when I got to that channel a pep rally was going on. Then I realized it was not a pep rally because there were no cheerleaders. Also, there was no mascot so I realized it was not a pep rally but rather a political convention. The main speaker at times was almost eloquent toward the end but then I also realized he was just exploiting the memory of an innocent young child. He was amazing--he could say such sentimental words without showing a bit of emotion or sadness. I doublechecked my remote and it was really working so I am not sure what I was watching unless it was a sequel to Alice in Wonderland. Dad

I'm kind of surprised by the responses here. Whether you like him or not, he's human and he knew the senator before this event. He has a daughter the same age. Of course he was affected, and it showed to me. He's human, whether you agree with his politics or not; whether you like him or not.

His task was impossible given his position. I read others who thought he left too much unsaid politically.

P

Anonymous said...

Ah, so he said just enough, politically? At a memorial.

Tom

Those aren't my words; they're your paraphrase. I'm relaying what I read.

I'm just saying people hate him and don't hear what they want to hear and people like him and don't hear what they want to hear. That task was an impossible situation. I personally thought the talk was heartfelt and pretty good. And, I like Obama OK but I don't love Obama (he was not my first choice for Dem candidate); I certainly don't understand how some people hate him so much.

I guess I'm Libra now.

I can think of a lot of politicians who would have handled the situation much better than he did.

Well, the use of the word "enemies" was dumb, but I can't think of a president in recent years who has been subject to the threatening kind of vitriol he has experienced, from the birthers to the tea partiers carrying guns to rallies - real hatred stuff, not just blowing off about how stupid he is or something. There are honorable opponents and there are enemies and he has a lot of enemies. Some of them got elected recently - I'm kind of enjoying watching the members of their own party squirm at their extremism.
On a lighter note, Steve King got passed up for a chairmanship on immigration! It would have been like putting the rabid wolverine in charge of the henhouse.

Anonymous said...

Yea - King is a schumck. I get embarrassed for Iowa everytime he makes the news.
