We just got back from Indiana/Illinois, going to a wedding and the Ortega boys' football games. Zane is out for the season. He tackled (head first) a kid who weighs exactly double what Zane weighs and hurt his back badly enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room. He was actually down on the field for a couple minutes before we saw him walking very slowly off between 2 coaches. After X-rays and a cat scan they decided he compressed 2 vertebrae and one of them is "wedged" (whatever that means, I think it means that the parts that point inward are sort of compressed together)) so he is to do no twisting, turning, bending, jumping or anything until he sees a doctor Monday and they'll decide if they need to do an MRI. He seemed fine this morning, but he was being careful. The nurse did say that he could possibly have done that earlier or maybe it might just be how that vertebra is.

Oh geez Cathy that sounds scary for someone Zane's age. I hope he's ok.

Mary, you can take him!

I just read that ND's all-American tight end, Kyle Rudolph, is having surgery on his hamstring and is out for the season. Dad

Man, that's too bad! Was he injured Saturday?
The ND game was wonderful! The weather here and there has been fantastic and the drive through Galena and south to Chicago was so nice.
Thank you to Ed for being such a great host and for making us watch "Anchorman".
Kudos to Chicago Italians for making good food, especially mushrooms.
The Leprecaun had no gold, so we just talked.

Finn has a suspicious lump just above his forehead hairline. The pediatrician really wasn't sure what it was and referred us to a pediatric neurosurgeon. One of our college friends, Jason Doescher, is a pediatric neurologist so he came over and felt his head and said it didn't feel like a tumor, but it should be looked at. So he called his friend, a pediatric neurosurgeon and got us an appt. with him in 3 days time. I am happy to report that after an MRI and a CAT it seems that the bump is nothing to worry about. Could be he popped something while sneezing or bumped his head and we didn' t notice. The bump could grow at which point we may want to remove it or it could go away. We, of course, are so relieved. And we are so grateful to our friend for not having to wait around. We literally walked in and were getting the MRI in 10 min. Then we went up one floor where the surgeon was waiting for us with MRI results in hand. Back down for CAT, up to see doctor again. The whole process took an hour and a half. We were told by the ped that appts. with the surgeon can take over a month to get into. We are very lucky in many ways. I was kind of fearing the worst because our friends' 6 year old boy died from a brain tumor last summer.

A worrisome story with a good ending. Your prayers were answered. Dad

Emily - so glad Finn is all right. I bet he really enjoyed the MRI and CAT scan.

This is kind of interesting - the Global Gender Gap report, measuring gender equality around the world. U.S. broke the top 20 for the first time ever (at 19). Ireland is #6. Top spots are of course the Nordic countries. What surprised me is that France fell from 18th to 46??

Africa and Middle East rule the bottom.

France's fall is probably because of their huge (growing) Muslim population...not much gender equity in the Muslim workplace.

Emily, so glad Finn is McCool!

Cathy, how is Zane?
