Good job Emily!
I win most improved...

I win most awesome.

I would have won if it would have went the other way...
Good job, Em. I should have picked based on favorite team colors and mascots like you.
Tom
And, Ed...thanks for keeping the blog up to speed. I'm guessing it can be a hassle at times.
Tom
Congratulations, Em!
I win most optimistic.
The rest of my week: tie and curl ribbons the right length to hang 75 posters on pews, wrap 75 little gifts, find something that fits to wear for First Communion weekend (the disadvantage of being on Team Pants-on-the-ground) But the end is in sight! I have surrendered any hope of having the Hispanic first communion mass under control and I am a much happier person.
Wow...did you say HisPANIC?
The winners 1-5 all learned alot living in Nebraska.
Don't miss the invite below from Jim and Erin to Mike's First Communion...
The Guilliatts rule and the rest of ya'll drool!
"y'all"? hillbilly.
Hey, my medical condition is recognized as IOD syndrome. Involuntary Oral Discharge. Noted by slacked jaw, vacuous eyes, dull responses and an occasional discharge of which I am totally unaware. Don't hate me for it. It's an aquired syndrome typically passed down from sibling to sibling.
Tom
Good use of the word, vacuous, Tom.

Come to our house Saturday night. Stuffed peppers, bow ties with Alfredo sauce, red sauce just because we will want it, misc. other things and a very fancy dessert. I even bought a very nice bottle of Chianti.
Love,
lisa
Colors of the Italian flag, goes well with Chianti...sounds yummy!...Thanks, but I'll be at GALA representing the interests of the Straub clan.
Tom...IOD syndrome? sounds like either an intra-uterine device or a bomb.
GALA sounds fun. IT's this weekend?
I want to reseal my deck this weekend. What do I need to do?
Yikes!
That's a job!
Clean it with a pressure washer, throughly rinse away all soap, then let it dry completely before applying the sealant.
I have never done it because it looks like so much work on "Hometime."
Lisa
I think after it's washed you're supposed to let it dry for a few days before you seal it.
Monica
GALA is this weekend, it soldout 3 weeks ago!
Emily, I really like your photo!
About 1/4 of my first communion students don't exist. That is, they filled out two or more registration forms with two or more of their optional last names. I'm trying to clean it up now, by double-checking against the names of parents on the forms - parents with two or more optional last names. Or by checking their phone numbers or addresses. I blame Yolanda. She thinks Fr. Paul (the supposedly retired missionary who is sheperding this flock) is guilty of liberation theology because he doesn't want parents spending $300 on a bridelike first communion dress.
Before you take the leap and finally get that pet python, please watch this very important news segment.

Steering Mary away from the $300 ruffled, sequined, trained & bustled dress almost became an issue. She wouldn't look at anything else. (Not less is more, more is more!)
Finally I told her that it wasn't just her choice, but that Dad and I had to like it, too. And I wanted sleeves! (Believe me, sleeves are not easy to find.) Whew!

Stevo and I saw Alice in Wonderland last night. Pretty good movie. Yes, Johnny Depp was self-indulgent. It works for him! Mia Wasikowska reminded us both of Braden. When we bought our tickets, Stevo asked if it was in 3-D. The ticket girl waved her hand back and forth, palm down, and said, "There is no more 3-D" which left us both wondering "You mean in the whole universe?" So, if anyone knows, is this the beginning of Flatland? Why wasn't it on CNN? Will it make me look thinner?
Hey everyone!
Please let us know if you are coming to see us on Sat evening and / or Sunday! (If you reply back via the blogsite or e-mail I probably won't get the message.)
I did send out information to some within driving distance, but we would be happy to see any of you.
Cheers,
lisa
Could Joe J. or someone please repost the info regarding hotels and what not for his and Brianne's wedding?
Thank you!
Monica
We have rooms blocked off at two hotels.
Hampton Inn & Suites

Fairfield Inn & Suites

The Hampton Inn is a little farther from the reception, but there will be a free shuttle running between there and the reception an hour before and after. The Hampton $94 a night. The Fairfield is much closer, but there is no shuttle. It is either $89 or $99, depending on the type of room you want.
If you have any other questions, let me know. My e-mail is joe.jayjack@gmail.com.
So far 15 rooms are booked at the Fairfield, all by Jayjacks. Get busy, you slackers. The Fairfield is closer - less than 3 miles from the reception site - but I understand the route goes right past a police station, so for those of you who think a shuttle would be in order, the Hampton might be the way to go. Don't forget it's a holiday weekend so rooms could fill up soon.
Mary Laurel's first communion and subsequent party were very nice. It was a perfect spring day out. The floral plates and napkins and cake were beautiful. Darlene Hicks and Linda and her beautiful (teenage!) daughter came - Bob was sick - and it was nice to see them. Dad gave Mary her first communion and I gave her the cup. Everyone sat outside until past sundown and then Randy made a run to get soft-serve ice cream for everyone who was still there.
That sounds like a perfect day!
Sounds wonderful!
Gala was fantastic!
did you get anything?
The Register won a Pulitzer for breaking news photography today. It was a tragic story, but a wonderful photo taken by Mary Chind. Read more about it here:

It was the first Pulitzer we've won since 1991. There was champagne in the office. I'm pretty sure that hasn't happened for a long time either.
Brianne also got her first front-page story. She broke the news that Megabus is going to offer service between Chicago and Des Moines. It's an express bus that offers cheap fares and free wireless internet. Exciting stuff!
Thanks for putting the hotel info up, Joe! And, ahem, my story doesn't run until tomorrow, you leaker.
