Yes, we had alot of fun eating at the Greek Islands with team "Pants on the Ground" (except Brian wasn't able to make it) they all look healthy and thinner...cheer them on! The $1,000 prize is a huge incentive!
Omaha was great: went to a Creighton game went to a great art show had Guinness @ the Dubliner ate beef cheeks, beef tongue, salmon mousse, Thai, Greek, clams and mussels...and Creighton cafeteria food with Caitlin! Had a great time with Caitlin, plus she kept our new dog all weekend.
Poor Finn had to have several x-rays and an enema today. He's not gaining weight (below 0%tile on the chart)and he's really constipated. They say his bowels looked fine in the x-ray. I changed 6 dripping diapers in 20 mins. Hopefully getting him cleaned out will help. I don't know. The Dr. will call next week.
jude just said the Obi Wan reminds him of Abraham LIncoln. He's never even seen the Star Wars movies. Just the Clone Wars cartoon on Fri nights which, by the way, I recommend.
Thanks for the Birthday wishes everybody. I had $1 tacos for lunch from a mexican place across the street from work and they were awesome. One of my co-workers got me a cupcake from one of those fancy schmancy cupcake places called "Sugar Bliss" and then later on I went to an Irish Bar in Greektown and celebrated my 39 years on the face of the planet. We didn't get any cheese they set on fire, but I did get a gyro. Also - Phelan and I are going to go to a place that I have a $25 coupon for called the Chicago Curry House after she gets done with her "cleansing cycle". You are going to have to ask her what that is all about.
I hope Finn gets better. I think you may need to feed him some salmon.
Happy Birthday Pete. Hope your birthday is as good as mine was.
Oh and Obi Wan reminds me of Abe Lincoln to, but I have never seen the cartoon Obi Wan.
I was reading about a new book that is coming out that they are sure to make a movie from. It's called "Abe Lincoln - Vampire Hunter". I think it hits the market sweet spot for patriotic folks and vampire crazy girls.
I hope Finn gets back on track. I remember when Eli was very sick as an infant and before they diagnosed and treated the pneumonia I was balling. But I have a lot of faith in modern medicine.
We celebrated your birthdays by eating Irish food and listening to Irish music at the Mad Hatter in Jupiter ( I think). Wish you could have been with us! So glad you found an Irish bar in Greektown, Ed!
Love you both, Lisa
More on the trip later... I gotta do so work catching up!
A small batch of prepared - super thick - instant potatoes is a good thickener for any bean soup. A chef with the last name of Mork showed me this trick years ago.
Prepare a small batch of super thick instant mashed potatoes and add to soup as a thickener. Works for any style bean soup if you don't have time for the beans to thicken on their own.
Mary's first communion is the Sunday following Easter. If you can come, we would love to see you!
I will be sending out an announcement with the time, etc. to those who live within driving distance just in case they think they may be able to make it.
We left Omaha on a cold day that dawned at 11 degrees. It was snowing again, adding to that more than 40 inches of snow this season.
We arrived late at night in Palm Beach. As we taxied down the runway, we flashed by palm tree after palm tree. Got inside, and despite the late hour, there are Mom and Dad looking happy and beautiful.
The next day we spent more than 5 hours outdoors seeing lions, crocodiles, zebras, panning for gold, etc. We went out for a very nice fish dinner and went to view the ocean in the dark. We told girls, "do you know what's on the other side? France!"
Then next day was spent with Pat an Josh. Escher & Cassatt exhibits. German food. (Really good cabbage rolls) Then on to an antique shop where Dad found a globe that showed that it was actually Africa on the other side of Florida.
Sunday mass and a great brunch with Dad's cousin, Rosemary. On to the beach - all those broken little shells can be painful- we ended up with slightly scarred legs (but well worth it!) Pat and Josh came over afterwards and we went out for Italian.
Monday we went to the lighthouse and saw manatees. They were close enough for us to have walked out into the water to pet them. Then on to the beach again, and to the lagoon and to the pool.
Our last night in Florida was spent at an Irish restaruant eating wonderful food listening to Noel Kingston play (without taking a break!) Irish and American songs. Wonderful. Mary and Emma danced. I wish I had filmed them so that I had dirt on them when they are 15 and surly. We had a few people tell us that the girls made their night.
Tuesday I went to water aerobics with Mom, Randy went to the pool with the girls in the rain, then we packed and left for the airport.
After waving good-bye to Mom and Dad, Mary said she missed them already.
Deep thought from Cathy: If you are in a YMCA women's locker room and you respond to another woman's greeting with a friendly "Hi, how's it going" and she sighs deeply and says "You really don't want to know," trust me, you don't.
Lisa gets good-mom points for actually coming to Generations the night after they got back from vacation AND bringing homemade treats. I was impressed.
It's 42 here today and we went for a walk. Beautiful and sunny. Jude has pinkeye. Gross. Another trip to the dr. We've been to the Dr. or dentist 6 times in the last three weeks.
Most of the kids chose chicken noodle. We had chicken noodle, lentil and Italian vegetable (meatless). There was no noodle soup left, but there was less lentil left over than veggie, so a lot of people tried something new. It was a great Lenten meal - soup, salad and a loaf of homemade bread on each table. There were no knives with the bread so people would take it and break it and share it....get it? Only most chose to use tiny plastic knives that came with their dinners to try to slice it, even after I said the words.
And impressed they should be. I have to say I would not be able to eat bread after I saw a bunch of people with their mitts all over it. Makes me think of the man-hands episode of Seinfeld.
Thanks for all the birthday wishes. We have not celebrated yet but will this weekend. Going to McSwiggan's a new Irish pub in town, never been there but the reveiw are very good. Only 2 complaints from people who bitched about the shepared pie not having a crust.
Here's an example of why owning a restaurant can really, really suck sometimes:
6:30 Friday night. KC Hall is having their big annual fish fry. We're always dead when they do this. I'm thinking, "Well, I'm losing money tonight. So I might as well go home and spend some rare evening time at home."
I should have left. 5 minutes later my dishwasher walks in my office - says she's sick - I believe her because she never misses - she goes.
I have to move one of my cooks to dishwasher and I get to linger around on a slow, not-profitable night waiting for it all to end.
upstairs neighbor had guests over last night. they brought their dogs with, so in addition to the 500 lb black lab/mountain gorilla mix that lives there they had what appeared to be a couple of rat terrier/goblin mixes. when they got home from drinking at 2:30 those dogs went nuts, which started pretty much every dog in the building barking.
actually, that's about the only time i can complain about them. once in a while the dog jumps around, but hardly ever at night. usually they're fairly quiet.
So on Sunday I went with Joe J. and Brianne and Brianne's family to see the Chieftans (they had an extra ticket). The show was pretty good. They had a bluegrass fiddle player, a pipe band, a bunch of dancers and a harp player with them.
Although the show (and music) was good I couldn't help but think that they took themselves a little bit to seriously as I sat in Daniel Burnam's Orchestra Hall without a beer watching them.
It was great to see Joe and Brianne though and meet some of Brianne's family.
FYI... The Garrigan Boys are playing in the first round of the state tournament today at 2:00! You can listen to a live-stream@ algonaradio.com...
I bought a t-shirt and was gonna try to go, but we are busy today (which is good)...Joe and Tom and kids left around 10a.m. for the drive to DesMoines. m.e.
The Kelley family enjoyed meeting you, Ed! When we got back to LaGrange, my grandpa was looking for you. Next time, we'll have to have you to the afterparty!
Brianne, Yes, Ed possesses some of the most endearing Straub/Cash qualities. But then, so do Cathy, Don, Mary Ellan, Joe, Lisa, Bob, Pete, Tom, Jim, Monica, Pat, Frank and Emily. So does Joe Jayjack, come to think of it, but I guess you've already noticed that. Welcome!! Joe2
It's amazing the amount of hostility that spews on the letters to the editor page on this issue. Many of these people probably think of themselves as pro-life, yet they are against protecting the lives of unborn babies of illegal aliens.
regarging the prenatal care: It has to do with the Federal Govt. telling Nebraska that they have been providing it with federal dollars illegally and now the state has to decide how (if) to provide it another way...
Monica, go to www.seedsavers.org. They only offer a few varieties of tomatoes and peppers as transplants (very high quality plants), but they have a vast array of heirloom seeds and it's fun to browse the catalog. Be careful you don't find yourself buying Aunt Mamie's Purple Okra or Cherokee Trail of Tears Red-spotted Beans or something.
The NE legislative committee on that prenatal care bill voted 7 to 1 to keep prenatal care for undocumented women and their babies. We'll see what the full Unicameral does.
More importantly, what's butter chicken and how can I get me some?
This discussion reminds me of the time during one of the Biker Rallies here in Algona I was negotiating with a potential vendor the rent he was to pay for setting up in my yard at Sarah's. He sold tee shirts and trinkets that bikers like. Hair down to his butt and a beard to his belly. Tattoos all over and fit the bill of a hard riding biker.
Nance came up and said, "Okay, Butter Butt (her pet name for me) I'm going home. See you, love you."
The biker looks at me and says, "So where should I set up, Butter Butt?"
So I wonder what Hillary did to not get the special assignment as Obama's envoy over in Israel. Biden is over there trying to broker a deal while her last gig was delivering radios to Haiti.
Maybe she's not fulfilling her job description. As in not giving Obama and shoulder rub and telling him how awesome he is.
Also, she probably doesn't want to screw up Bill's Israeli legacy for his book tour... Biden was 2 hours late for the big dinner tonight, he's pissed 'cause they announced (while he's there) that they (Isreal) are building 1200 more houses for Jews in the Palestinians "zone"...
I'm on the watch for hungry househunters...they've been trapped indoors by tall snowbanks and are slowly coming out of hibernation. I'm trying to grab them as they are blinded by the sunlight!
A young hispanic couple here recently had a baby. I don't know what the deal is, but the baby is going to die soon. Our parish had 40 hours Eucharistic devotion the last couple days and Father Dan was in the church from 3:00AM to 4:00AM. He said the mother came to church with her baby and came up and knelt at the foot of the altar and held her baby up to Jesus. Every time I start to tell this to someone, I can't finish because I choke up.
Monica, I also recommend Seed Savers and the okra. It's a beautiful plant, but grow it in a big pot if you don't want a lot. I heard it spreads like crazy. Some okra would also be delicious in butter chicken! How about turnips? Beets and radishes?
When I worked selling Indian food a few times at fairs, butter chicken was the best seller. Tomato paste, some jalapenos, onions, a lot of spices and a lot of butter and chicken. Mix with a little yogurt and sour cream, serve over potatoes or rice.
omg..so I eat lots of Indian food, I wonder if there's lots of butter in many of their dishes?? I always thought it was more of an olive oil based type of cooking!
I buy the jars of Indian sauces in Omaha and then just use them over rice, etc...but no butter listed and it's relatively low fat.
just googled "butter chicken" it's Chicken Makhani...it's one of our favorites!! I've never heard it called butter chicken...it's the best at Jaipur in Omaha, but also Mother India at 36th and Leavenworth for about $6.!
a lot of the recipes I've seen call for cococnut milk, heavy cream, sourcream , yogurt,etc... all which have low fat/cal alternatives. you can still make a decent dish with those thing. Most of the time.
Thanks Uncle Ed for sending Jude the Star Wars dvds. They arrived yesterday and we immediately watched Episode IV. He was so excited. We also watched the Ireland vacation dvd and Jude was very impressed that there are real castles in Ireland.
Oh and Mary I am nearly certain that the chicken Makhani at Jaipur is made with butter. It just tastes too good. You know you can make hasbrowns at home but they never taste as good as hashbrowns in a restaurant because you could never bring yourself to pour enough oil in the pan to make them nice and cripsy, but the cooks don't care about your waistline, they just want you to like their food. Am I right Tom?
We received some stupid news today. Ethiopian gov't has changed the law for adoptions - now adoptive parents have to travel to the country twice.
The reason for this new law is that families were arriving in Ethiopia after their newly adopted children were legally theirs and then deciding the children weren't "right" for their families. These families would leave the country without the child/children. Once this happens in Ethiopia, the children are never allowed to be adopted again.
I understand the reasoning but it means two trips ($$$$$, not to mention vacation days) to Africa in the span of about 3-4 months.
We'll be home for Easter and will welcome any and all visitors for Easter dinner. Please let us know if you are coming, how many, etc. We'll probably have lamb and ham and creamed cabbage, etc. We are looking forward to it. Mom & Dad
So Yahoo and ESPN have been featuring a clip of that Texas Tech coach (Leech?) who got fired. It's him in the locker room after a game they won.
Basically, he's chewing out the team because they are, in his words, producing mediocre results on the field. That they aren't as good as they think they are and that he's going to start benching starters. He throws in a few curse words and raises his voice a little but it's nothing I wouldn't expect from a successful coach.
The press is making it out like it was a disrespectful, inappropriate, fire and brimstone tongue lashing. Nothing of the sort.
Our culture is in a downward spiral because no one feels there should be any accountability (ass-chewing, lose your job, poor grades, whatever) when you screw up. The reaction to these clips are a clear example of this.
This is also exemplified when parents side with their children against their teachers. That really annoyed me. Of course parents have to be advocates for their kids, but sometimes...well you know what I mean.
We were treated to a great dinner last night with Mom and Dad and Rob Zielinski and his wife, Marianne. THey are staying almost across the street from Mom and Dad's condo for a weekend getaway = spring training and beach. Very nice to see Rob and to meet Marianne.
Grace & Ryan & kids came for the weekend and so Ellen & Andy came also. I learned the Dominoes game Chickenfoot. Stevo & I just made big pots of stew and chili beforehand so it was a fun, relaxed weekend.
I'm updating my files....I have 87 kids for First Communion this year and after Easter I'm starting a class for about 40 - 50 adult and teen Hispanics to be confirmed at Pentecost. I was at work every day and 3 nights last week and the last 4 Saturday mornings. I'm helping design process and curriculum for the new adolescent faith formation mandated by our bishop that will start this fall. My job just about tripled this past year, although I'm changing some stuff for next year so I'm not duplicating efforts. Economy notwithstanding, I sure hope I get a raise this year. I deserve one.
I sent out e-mails for the Straub March Madness Bracket Challenge. Make sure you fill them out!!
If I didn't e-mail one to you and you would like to do it, just let me know.
If you would like to do it, but can't seem to figure out how to sign up on-line, fill out a bracket and e-mail it or fax it to me before the games start. My Fax is 312 244 3029.
Sandbagging has begun at the Four Corners here in Algona, it seems like people have been brought in to help, it's quite an operation. The river won't crest untill Sunday, and some of the roads are already covered. Semi trucks were loaded over the weekend with merchandise from K-Mart's back room area...McDonalds is serving a new dessert, the Frostee Flood Surprise!
I didn't realize that it was flooding. I am pretty sure that Tom and Joe's houses will be ok, but how about you and Mike? Are you sandbagging on your sandbagging?
Nope...the Irish are always on higher ground! It seems the sandbaggers were hired directly from K-mart's corp. office, so they hired a temp firm in Mankato for workforce, and as is turns out Don was part of a large group from Mankato hired as a group for sandbagging here!
Hey! Happy St. Patrick's Day!!We'll be home in less than 2 weeks. Please let us know if you are or are not coming for Easter dinner. If you are coming, when and how many. They are having a St. Patrick's Day party at the clubhouse tomorrow with corned beef and cabbage. It's funny but with all the trips we have made to Ireland, I've never seen corned beef and cabbage on a restaurant menu. We hope you have lots of fun at the parade. Dad

Happy birthday! Is it 39 and 49? Have fun, boys.
Yes, Ed. You look green. Did you have too much Guinness and gyro?
Happy Birthday Edward!
Happy Birthday Peter!
I'm doing a happy dance for you!

Poor Finn had to have several x-rays and an enema today. He's not gaining weight (below 0%tile on the chart)and he's really constipated. They say his bowels looked fine in the x-ray. Thanks for the Birthday wishes everybody. I had $1 tacos for lunch from a mexican place across the street from work and they were awesome. Happy Birthday Pete. Hope it's as good as Ed's was.

Tonight at Generations of Faith we are having lentil soup for our lenten meal. I have to go over and thicken it up.
Use an immersion blender and not flour?
maybe just add lots of ham.
thanks

Deep thought from Cathy:

Lisa gets good-mom points for actually coming to Generations the night after they got back from vacation AND bringing homemade treats. I was impressed.
Tom, thanks for your hint about the potatoes. I actually had time to let the soup simmer down, but I'll keep that little tidbit for the future.
It was great to see the Milbraths. And, it was remarkable how good 67 felt to them compared to the rest of us.
p
67 PROBABLY FELT LIKE 85! When we were in Omaha the temp rose to 38..we were walking around without coats!
Sounds like the Milbraths had a great time!
Cathy, did kids eat the lentil soup? It's my fav. but some kids won't touch it.
It's 42 here today and we went for a walk. Beautiful and sunny. Jude has pinkeye. Gross. Another trip to the dr. We've been to the Dr. or dentist 6 times in the last three weeks.

I had occasion to tell about six different people about my 5-year-old nephew requesting lentil soup for his birthday. They were suitably impressed.
Only 2 complaints from people who bitched about the shepared pie not having a crust.

a guy in one of my classes uses a european carryall. aka manpurse. i guess it's ok, he's planning to teach French.
Conversation with the busdriver this morning:
busdriver: "You ride this bus everyday?"
me: "Usually".
busdriver: "So do I turn here or what?"
I thought that was pretty funny.
Here's one for you...the other morning while driving the three boys to school.
ME: Dang! The windows are frozen shut again. I hate power windows.
DONNY: And I just farted.
ELI AND LIAM(hysterical laughter): And it's deadly!
ME (irritated): No one farts till you get out of the truck!
Tom
Very fartuitous of you.
No meat
what shall I eat?
Good fish is a treat,
being Catholic is sweet.

I remember when Christmas hours used to kick in at the mall and there we were, hanging around till 10:00 with nobody in the mall. I hated it.
so did i. mostly when the art store was across from the organ store.
Stuck in a mall has to suck way worse than being stuck in bar.
Tom
upstairs neighbor had guests over last night. they brought their dogs with, so in addition to the 500 lb black lab/mountain gorilla mix that lives there they had what appeared to be a couple of rat terrier/goblin mixes. when they got home from drinking at 2:30 those dogs went nuts, which started pretty much every dog in the building barking.
Scott: Eat your eggs kids. They're made with love.
Jude: And bacon.
Frank, I don't envy you. We had the worst neighbors in Huntington Beach. Come home wasted 3-4 nights a week and blast their music on their patio.

She lives in Robins. It's their headquarters.
The NE legislative committee on that prenatal care bill voted 7 to 1 to keep prenatal care for undocumented women and their babies. We'll see what the full Unicameral does.
More importantly, what's butter chicken and how can I get me some?
Butter Chicken is Indian and it a creamy, sweet, curry. Delish.
Monica
It's WONDERFUL! Butter chicken that is. Emily gave me a spice packet to make it for xmas.
p
If I put Christ back in Christmas can I get a spice packet?
I've never heard of butter in Indian food...
Tom
Mary, goggle Indian Butter Chicken recipes and a bunch will come up.
You should try it sometime. It's good.
Tom
Maybe Biden rubbed harder...
Its like 65 degrees today. I have been in the office for 10 hours and can't wait to get to bar start my terrorist watch!
I'm on the watch for hungry househunters...they've been trapped indoors by tall snowbanks and are slowly coming out of hibernation. I'm trying to grab them as they are blinded by the sunlight!
It's our new ad on KLGA
Iowa State vs. Texas @ 8:30 tonight first round of the Big 12 Tournament.
More importantly, ND at 7:00 second round of Big East tourney.
Am I right Tom?
yummy, I'm getting hungry.
Merlin Olsen died...from Little House on the Prairie, he was Mr. Garvey...also a pretty good footbal player.
Are you kidding me? I"m watching him on T.V. right now.
p
Let me try this again...Plans for Easter anyone?
I think we will be at home.
Jeez You guys look like the Kray Brothers
We received some stupid news today. Ethiopian gov't has changed the law for adoptions - now adoptive parents have to travel to the country twice.
The reason for this new law is that families were arriving in Ethiopia after their newly adopted children were legally theirs and then deciding the children weren't "right" for their families. These families would leave the country without the child/children. Once this happens in Ethiopia, the children are never allowed to be adopted again.
I understand the reasoning but it means two trips ($$$$$, not to mention vacation days) to Africa in the span of about 3-4 months.
Drag.
p
Wow...that's too bad. Will you earn enough miles to help with the trip back?
Pat that stinks. They should grandfather in the ones that have already begun the adoption process.
Shoot.
Monica
We'll be home for Easter and will welcome any and all visitors for Easter dinner. Please let us know if you are coming, how many, etc. We'll probably have lamb and ham and creamed cabbage, etc. We are looking forward to it. Mom & Dad
Yummy!
Go Irish! They play tonight in the 3rd round of the Big East Tourney.
Tom
This is also exemplified when parents side with their children against their teachers. That really annoyed me. Of course parents have to be advocates for their kids, but sometimes...well you know what I mean.
Saw this on facebook. Great photos, Joe and Brianne:

We were treated to a great dinner last night with Mom and Dad and Rob Zielinski and his wife, Marianne. THey are staying almost across the street from Mom and Dad's condo for a weekend getaway = spring training and beach. Very nice to see Rob and to meet Marianne.
P
It's good to see that Joe "wears the pants".
Tom
Grace & Ryan & kids came for the weekend and so Ellen & Andy came also. I learned the Dominoes game Chickenfoot. Stevo & I just made big pots of stew and chili beforehand so it was a fun, relaxed weekend.
Sounds fun!! You guys are doing something every weekend.
Caitlin had a great time out in San Fran. for Spring break..I'm jealous!

Will this put a damper on St. Pats's activities?
Ed, when do we need to have our brackets in?
Nope...the Irish are always on higher ground!
It seems the sandbaggers were hired directly from K-mart's corp. office, so they hired a temp firm in Mankato for workforce, and as is turns out Don was part of a large group from Mankato hired as a group for sandbagging here!
Also..flood stage here is 14 feet...the river (by Kmart) will crest Saturday at 22 feet!
DOT just closed 169 between Algona and St. Joe and 180th South of Whittemore is closed!
You have to have your picks in by Thursday the 18th by 11:00 AM CST.
Don't wait until the last minute especially if you are faxing them in.
OK, whqt's a valid tie breaker again?
That's "what's".
Hey! Happy St. Patrick's Day!!We'll be home in less than 2 weeks. Please let us know if you are or are not coming for Easter dinner. If you are coming, when and how many.
They are having a St. Patrick's Day party at the clubhouse tomorrow with corned beef and cabbage. It's funny but with all the trips we have made to Ireland, I've never seen corned beef and cabbage on a restaurant
menu.
We hope you have lots of fun at the parade.
Dad
