Hey! Happy St. Patrick's Day!!We'll be home in less than 2 weeks. Please let us know if you are or are not coming for Easter dinner. If you are coming, when and how many.
They are having a St. Patrick's Day party at the clubhouse tomorrow with corned beef and cabbage. It's funny but with all the trips we have made to Ireland, I've never seen corned beef and cabbage on a restaurant
menu.
We hope you have lots of fun at the parade.

I'm on my way to Big Lots to buy a cheesy fake wagon wheel to make into a ship steering wheel for our summer High Seas Expedition. It's fun to spend other people's money. I've never been to Big Lots; maybe I'll spend some of my own.

I like big lots. Lots of junk to look at and sometimes you find something you can't pass up. We signed Jude up for Annunciation's High Seas Expedition. I'll bet your's will have better sets.

bought at Big Lots: cheesy fake wagon wheel, underwear, stainless steel water bottle to look cool with, Oreos with green filling, loveseat slipcover ($22), cute 3 flowerpots on one tray thing, white tin Easter tray that will be the basis of Easter centerpiece with real grass growing in it. Passed up on: sage green plastic Adirondack chairs ($15!), $25 memory foam mattress pads, big resin flowerpots and a cute watering can. I'm going back, I can feel it.

The SUN IS OUT!!! The first time in at least 2 weeks. A whole bunch of tiny green things just sprang out of the ground (is sprang a word?) Tomorrow it's supposed to be in the 60's. (snow on saturday, hush, maybe it will pass us by.) How's the rising water situation in Algona?

Happy Birthday, Pat. Demand to be taken out to the seediest Irish bar you can find. So seedy it's not even Irish. Maybe a black latino Irish bar with an illicit game of dice in one corner and unknown shenaningans in the back room. Just tell Josh to wear his chop suey-high karate outfit and to pack heat. Have fun. But don't make extended eye contact.

Thanks everyone! Hope you all had festive St. Patrick's Days.
Emily is correct about my birthday companions. Fortunately we have asked another couple to join us as well. We are going to a restaurant called Table 41, I think.
BTW Tom, I did go to a somewhat seedy bar last night for a Guinness, though not the seediest. It's called the Duck Tavern. Seedy in Florida is pretty seedy.

Happy Birthday Pat!!
Order a bloody steak and talk with your mouth full....it's your birthday!

The flooding excitement may have crested along with the water...we'll probably hear more later today.

St. Patrick's Day parade and afterparty was GREAT FUN! The Straub's beat the McCall's again. Every year now, Joe and I wait till the bitter end...DeeDee and Maureen are good, but the minute they left, we left...so hold your Straub head high!

Pat doesn't eat bloody steak, she likes 'em well done, which is just wrong, but hey, it's her birthday.

So Sarah's turned seedy late in the night?

We had the best corned beef I've ever had last night. Stevo made it. We had two heapin' helpings of everything. There's just enough left to make ourselves 2 fat Reubens tonight before we go back to our diets. We also had Shamrock Shakes and green-stuffed Oreos, for a totally authentic Irish celebration.

Tom -

You and Cathy are the only ones who do not have Kansas in the final four.

Speaking of turncoats, Murray State is lead by Isaac Miles formerly of Creighton.

c said...

Actually nuns pay income taxes like everyone else. Most nuns in the US nowadays are functioning away from their motherhouse, don't live in a convent, and get paid a salary at whatever job they have, even if most of it goes to the motherhouse. I guess most of them make so little that their taxes end up being nothing, though. You can't say they haven't paid their dues to the society at large. They have a voice and I'm glad to see they're using it. Meanwhile the male-dominated Church continues to commit the corporate sin of placing a higher value on the lives and dignity of its priests than on the lives and dignity of their victims. Someone needs to clean house.

Anonymous said...

Since the issue of the rogue nuns has been raised and since they were praised for their actions, I want to present the truth about them.

Their organization is the Leadership Conference of Catholic Women and they claim to represent 59,000 nuns. The Bishops' conference say that the number is "grossly overstated." Only 55 people representing various orders signed the letter sent to legislators. For some orders, 3 or more signed and one person signed twice. There are over 700 women's religious orders in this country so if only 55 signed the letter and 3 or more signed for some of the orders, it is obvious that this is a miniscule group and Emily accurately referred to them as rogues.

The Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious represents more than 100 religious communities and more than 10,000 nuns. Yesterday they came out with a statement supporting the position of the U.S. bishops in opposing the Senate bill "because of its expansion of abortion funding and its lack of provision for conscience protection."

I'm sure you all understand that conscience protection is a very important issue. Without it a doctor who refuses to perform an abortion or a nurse or technician who refuses to assist in an abortion could be fired.

We must keep in mind that the American bishops have been promoting the expansion of health care for decades, long before the politicians got in the act, but they cannot support an immoral law. In fact, they have to fight such a law. If the Senate bill would prohibit federal funding of abortions and provide for conscience protection, the bill would have the full support of the bishops.

Archbishop Chaput of the archdiocese of Denver stated that the rogue group is trying to sow confusion about Catholic doctrine. He also wrote: "Do not be fooled. Nothing has changed. The Senate bill remains gravely flawed on the issues of abortion funding, conscience protections and the exclusion of immigrants."

That is an accurate statement of the Church's teaching and anyone who rejects it is certainly "rogue."

With love, Dad

Anonymous said...

So they want to force people to do something they don't want to and deem it into law by side-stepping the democratic process. Maybe the Tea Party Wingnuts aren't as crazy as I thought they were when they talk of a socialistic government.

Tom

Ed X said...

I think they should pay for neither abortions nor births since it is really an elective proceedure.

I guess in cases of rape they could have the health insurance cover the births.

In any case a flawed bill is better than no bill at all (no matter how it gets passed).

Anonymous said...

Not true. Very rarely is a rush job a good job. They are rushing this through for purely political reasons. They should be more measured and methodical. Start with insurance reform and move on from there. Dumb @$$#%'s. I can't stand them.

Ed, based on your thinking every medical procedure is elective. Your thumb would not have been covered. It was elective. But I do kind of agree with you that SOMETHING should be passed and then tweaked.

Today the kids from UNI take on the Kansas juggernaut. I actually think it could be a good game. UNI has a strong 7 footer, a decent bench, an outside game and a good penetrator. On defense they held their opponents to the second lowest average point total in the nation.

Sibelius will say anything she needs to say in order to help pass the Senate bill. When she was governor of Kansas she was so pro abortion that her bishop privately asked her not to present herself for Communion. Naturally, she ignored that request. To get a head's up on Obama, as soon as the head of the "rogue nuns" made her statement Obama invited her to the White House. Any law that pays to have human life killed is immoral and should not be passed no matter how praiseworthy it may be otherwise. Remember, we speaking about up to 4000 human lives each day. Dad

Bart Stupak just announced that he and several fellow right-to-life Democrats reached an agreement with Obama on an executive order guaranteeing that no federal funds would be used for abortions and protecting the conscience rights of health care providers and institutions. The House still has the ability to shore that up with reconciliation measures and I hope they do because I think an executive order is more likely to face a court challenge. I think the USCCB opposition to the bill is mistakenly based on a worst-case scenario anyway. They are saying that it is possible that in each state it could happen that only one insurance carrier will be available for customers who want a company that does not cover elective abortions, while in reality right now, almost no health insurance companies do. They don't want to, they don't want any part of it. Unprofitable and risky. Looks like a vote is likely soon. By the way, Jesse Jackson Jr is a stud (see C-span)

Anonymous said...

Did C-Span say this about Jesse Jackson Jr? haha.

This will work about as good as the stimulus plan and social security. And, eventually, by some means or another abortions will get funded.

Tom

c said...

Dana Basch is almost certainly an alien.

c said...

Social security works pretty well - it has acheived its aim of preventing our elderly from living in crushing poverty at the end of their lives. It needs an adjustment that our Congress is going to have to grow a couple and provide - namely, either a raise in witholding or a delay in benefits. Let's see who steps up.
I listened the other day to recordings of the debate over Medicare - it was almost word for word the same as the health care debate: creeping socialism, bankrupting the country, killing business, death panels, the government "getting between a man and his doctor" etc....the only thing that's changed is that now the language isn't all about the guys.

Anonymous said...

All I know is that Social Security probably will be bankrupt and all the money I've contributed over the year won't be there.

All I know is that I work with some very down and out people and almost all without exception recieve medical care when needed. Be it through title 19 or the state's Hawkeye insurance. A highly subsidized insurance where their copays and premiums are almost nothing.

All I know is that Obama is probably the most pro choice president ever. The same is true of Pelosi in her post.

Someone is going to get screwed over on this thing and like most things it will probably not be the super rich or the super poor.

Probably one of the people to get screwed in this thing is my lower middle class server who is a transplant patient. She will probably loose her medicaid funding and her house aftet that.

As a small potatoes business owner I probably will get screwed in this thing. Like most owners I will try to find the loop holes even if it means making the few full timers into part timers. Thus, they will get screwed.

This thing is full of opportunity for the "Law of Unintended Consequences" to kick into high gear.

What happened to the pledge of transparency? The pledge of fiscal responsibility? The pledge of reaching across the aisle to build consensus? Where are the jobs? All lies.

Pelosi and her ilk will rest with a twisted and clear conscience totally unaware or unconcerned that the country is going down a crap hole.

Tom

Anonymous said...

The biggest joke about all this is...I listened to Obama's speech on Saturday when he was urging the democrats to vote in favor of the bill. A paraphrased line from the speech - "I know you are in a tough spot. I've been there. I know what it's like to cast a controversial vote."

All this from a guy who voted "present" more than any other. Putz!

As I understand it once the bill is signed coverage will begin immediately for all but in a cynically political move the costs won’t be seen on our tax bills for 18 months. This will provide some cover for the democrats in the fall.

Joe Scarborough said this morning that every time in the debate that a republican tried to bring up the anti-trust exemption for insurance companies they were deemed to be out of order by the Speaker. Which I don’t understand because the lack of competition among insurance companies is one of the single biggest drivers of health care coverage. Smells like a backroom deal if ever there was one.

Leave it to Vice President Joe Biden to add a little, ahem, flair to the signing of a health care bill affecting millions of people.

"This is a big f------ deal," Biden told President Barack Obama after introducing him at today's ceremony at the White House.

Biden appeared to be offering that perspective to Obama privately, but his remark was captured on audio and video.

c said...

He was excited.

c said...

The Repubs were introducing the anti-trust thing at the wrong time in the proceedings. They were just trying to gum up the works - they know better. It's like a lawyer trying to introduce new evidence during his summation. But now in the fall they can run footage of the nasty old Speaker apparently being on the insurance companies' side. Watch for it.
