Taste!

So the Taste of Chicago is coming around again (June 26-July 5). Here is the food line up. I am looking at that Maxwell St. Burger ((Burger patty topped with pork chop, polish sausage and grilled onions). Anybody who wants to go has a bed.

I think the babies want to be walked because in utero they were walking around all the time, they get used to the rhythm(sp?).

Burger topped with a pork chop AND a polish sausage? Wow

Earlier that burger sounded delicious, but after spending about 20 minutes outside, it sounds pretty nasty. Whoo, it's hot and humid. I need a kitty pool. Or some kids so I have an excuse to run through the sprinklers.

The Des Moines art festival is also this weekend, with a lot of food vendors. I will be working in an Indian food booth again, and this time Andy will be helping us by grilling. Not sure what he will be grilling, as that is new to this vendor, but it should be good. Hoping for milder temps this weekend.

Mom and Dad stopped by on their way home from the Deacon's retreat yesterday. Milbraths and Caitlin came over and we had a nice lunch before they hit the road. Then Molly and the kids came over for dinner (Brian and his dad were on a long bike ride) and we had another yummy dinner. Oscar is definitely a drummer....he crawls all over and when he finds something to take with him, he stops and bangs it on everything to see what it sounds like. He doesn't ever put anything in his mouth - he just wants to see what it sounds like. Sometimes he sings, sort of a bluesy falsetto.

Heat index of 110 predicted for today. I think the humidity is about 110 too. High nineties all week. I want it noted that I hardly ever complain about the cold. That's so I can whine about this kind of crap all I want.

Anonymous said...

Our heat index right now is 113. Of course, I should expect it. It doesn't really bother me nearly as much as cold weather does. It annoys me a bit that I can't go running but other than that it's just a bit hot. Of course, I am fortunate in that I don't work outside.
Ive never ever been a big fan of air conditioning, but this week (and basically going without last summer down here) I am ever so grateful.

I had a maxwell st. burger last night. Only it didn't have pork chops or sausage on it. Or onions.

It's too bad that "The Taste" is on a night that we're open. Wonder if they could change it to a Monday? Prolly not, I know.
A few sources say that ROCK GONE WILD will bring in 30-40,000 peeps. One source says they're gonna cut it off at 10,000. Wonder which it will be? Either way, it's gotta be good for business. ;-)

I just ran out of gas at the intersection of Jones and State (Hwy 169) I was able to sort of roll north on Jones and then crank it into the station and then 2 Hunky Ruhnke boys pushed it (the car) up to the station...first thing he said as he was filling it...How's business been?...I said it's been so busy I haven't had time to stop for gas!
Geez, I gave the boys tickets to the Taste of Algona for keeping out of the way of uncoming semi trucks.

There's a new bar in CB that sells a heart-attack burger that is a hamburger topped with an egg and bacon between two grilled-cheese sandwiches. I don't know what it's called. I'd call it "The Art of Excess."

m.e. said...

You can get your breakfast, lunch and dinner all in one sitting...it's a real time saver, I'm all for this sandwich...although, you would have to order a small oj, a small milk and a beer!

Ed X said...

What is Sarah's offering for Taste of Algona?

Ed X said...

Or is that supposed to be "Sarah's's"?

sarah said...

Coconut Breaded Shrimp...mmm! :-)

Anonymous said...

...with a Pineapple & Plum Dipping Sauce. Kind of a Hawaiian theme so I'm looking for girls to wear coconut bras and grass skirts.

I wonder how it will stack up against the Dilly Bars (DQ), Chips and Salsa (Cinco De Mayo) and any number of pizzas. Oh, and the Chrome is doing a pork loin of some sort. He (Danny from the Chrome) told me he perfected it. "BEST EVER!"

Does he charge $19.95 and serve it with box wine?
Tom, don't forget the Bread Lady, last year she offered little circle pieces of bread the size of a quarter!
BUT..I'm all for the dilly bar!

The local radio news guy (Chuck Shockley) just announced a heat advisory and then said very earnestly "we all have to persevere and survive"...(it's 91)

Anonymous said...

I've been trying to persevere and survive as I tear apart an exhaust fan and it's housing up on the roof. My kitchen is overheating because the motor that is supposed to suck air out isn't. I think the heat index up there is about a thousand. Maybe 500 in the kitchen.

Tom

Oh geez, I bet it's unbearable in the kitchen.

I always love going to city hall because the building really does look almost like a cathedral, but today I had to get my window sticker for the car and I found out that the city of chicago has ALL OF THE STICKERS EXPIRE on the SAME DAY!!!!!

You wouldn't believe the line that was in there.

"Honk if you're a lefty"
"Remember the Chicago Fire"

Hi,
Mom and I had a good time last night. In the afternoon I heard that Eli's baseball game at Buffalo Center was rained out and I knew that Betty's team had played earlier so all the grandkids were available. We had dinner with them at the offial bar and restaurant of the Rock Gone Wild pre-party. It's fun watching them interact and they get along so well. About the time we were finishing Mary Ellan called to see what we were doing and I invited her and Mike to come out and join us for an after dinner drink. Joe also knew we were there because I had invited Betty through him so about 5 minutes after Mike and Mary arrived, Joe came in and sat with us while the kids fed quarters into the game machines. Then we drove the 4 kids to their respective homes. It would have been nice if Joe3 could have joined us but he was weight lifting at BGHS. It was a very enjoyable evening. Dad

n said...

We are not only the Official Bar & Restaurant for the Pre-Party...but, the ENTIRE 4-day event...is that cool or what?

Yes, E, L & D had a geat time with Granny, Grandpa and Betty. :-) Tom enjoyed the a/c at home and we enjoyed some uninterrupted "down time." Thanks G & G!

Another nice evening at SS, thanks for the wine G&G!

Iowa's most famous football coach was shot and killed this a.m. in the school's weight room at Aplington/Parkersburg...50 students were in the weight room when it happened! He was shot multiple times, the shooter is in custody (not a student) The school is about 80 miles NE of DesMoines...he was the NFL's pick for high school coach of the year in 2005.

Randy bought into a food co-op through work. We receive fresh, organic veggies each week. We got our first of the pickins' yesterday. Randy came home with sugar snap peas (yea!) leeks (gonna try some soup) and way too many red and golden beets! Randy is dreaming of what we can do with beets, all I am imagining is red stains EVERYWHERE and something no one wants to eat.

I read about that football coach. Terrible.

I just returned from the Las Vegas area for a six day intensive work trip. We stayed at the sleaziest big casino there is, The Sunset Station in Henderson, NV. The place is huge. Inside, there's a neverending casino floor, a Hooters, A Panda Express, a Starbucks and, surprisingly, a couple of nice restaurants. Specifically, there was a nice steak house called Sonoma Cellars for the winners. Panda Express for the losers.

I spent most of my time in a conference room talking about Zappos.com. But I made it down to the tables on Saturday night for a few hours. I walked away $40 richer! Steak Dinner!

The rooms at this place are like $50 if anyone's looking for a cheap place to stay in the Vegas area. It's far from The Strip but if all you're looking to do is smoke, drink and gamble, this might be your joint. All in all, it was a pretty fun trip (as far as work trips go).

Back in Chicago putting the finishing touches on my condo before it goes on the market.

This is your last month in Chicago!!!
Will you stay at this place on your drive to San Fran?
Can we start calling you "Cisco Kid" now?

The Coach shooter was a grad of the school and had played footbal, he's 24, Mark Becker...the DM REGISTER has good coverage of the story...the coach had 4 players currently in the NFL!

I'm not trying to "hock" our wears...but, thought I should let yah know that I am ordering a limited number of SARAH'S GONE WILD tees/tanks...this morning. The tees are men's sizing, basic style, black, crew neck, short sleeved, 50/50 blend. The tanks are junior sizing, black, one inch strap, slightly scoop neck, knit blend and run very small. For example, I would guess that an average gal at 5'5" and 125 would prolly wear an XL and it would not be "roomy." Eli will get an adult medium and Liam an adult small tee.
On the front, they'll say SARAH'S GONE WILD and on the back they will have the dates and location of the event. We "may" put on there something about the "Official Bar & Restaurant of Rock Gone Wild."
I have to order the shirts b4 11am bc we wanna try and get them by next week for ABATE.
Unfortunately, I'll have to order "blindly" as we're unsure exactly who will be working in August. I'll be ordering mostly tee's in an XL and tanks in an XL. I'm only ordering 100 units (staff/friends/family and a few leftover for other peeps) and may or may not reorder.
If yah want one, particularly if it's in a size other than an XL...you'll need to let me know soon.
The shirts are $15.
The tanks go from S-XXL and 1X and 2X.
The tees go from S-4X.

Or, 2 for $25.

so who's moving into desmond's condo?

Eli's game was suppose to start at 11:30. There was a time change and he didn't tell me...they have just begun. Sigh. Tom and Liam are there, I just showered and Donny's "ready." However, I have to order these shirts b4 11:30am. I just went to place my order and they are out of black tanks. The screen colors are gonna be prolly red, yellow, orange and maybe, green. I have 2 other tank color choices that would work...deep purple or brown. Should I pick one of them or wait for the black to come in but then, we won't have them b4 ABATE...but, we will for "Wild."

Anonymous said...

I'd order brown if it's dark brown. p

Farrah Fawcett died. Now, it is sad when a person loses their life too early. I feel bad for her and her family. But, I don't understand how she became a big news story. I go home for lunch and she's breaking news on CNN with correspondents.

p

n said...

P.S. Thanks, Joe3 too!

Yah, what's up with Farrah being breaking news? Sure it's sad but, it was expected and there HAS TO BE more important things going on in the world today.

c said...

I couldn't figure that out either. The Today Show devoted all kinds of time to her and Ryan O'Neil a few weeks back - segments several times a day for days on end.

OK GIRLS don't be so catty...she had the biggest selling pin-up poster of ALL time and was a huge influence on what became big 80's hair...I thought shw was gorgeous, in a sexy way...more women watched CHARLIES ANGELS than men...and, always women would say "I like Kate Jackson best"..ha

I don't think this is catty. I just don't understand how she's breaking news.

Oh....and her real name: Mary Farrah Fawcett.

Nance...I forgot to give the boys their College World Series t-shirts I picked up in Omaha...maybe tonight!!

n said...

My friends and I would play "Charlie's Angels" and I was always Jacqueline Smith. My whiny-short haired, friend was always Kate and her long, blonde haired sister was Farrah...the much preferred character of them all. Their Mom made their much older brother play with us, so he was Charlie.
I wasn't allowed to watch the show...but, I did.
I also couldn't watch Love American Style, Three's Company and Love Boat...I did anyway.
I could watch Mod Squad though!

Anonymous said...

I think Farrah got so much coverage because she wanted her story to be public. It's not news, it's human interest coverage. Although the way it was presented, I didn't often get that human interest angle, and Ryan O'Neill only came off as insincere.

From the Rock Gone Wild website:

"What: Rock Gone wild is 4 days of hard rock n roll debauchery at its finest."

I think the hospital is going to be very busy...luckily that's the weekend we are taking Joe to ND!

The Abate crowd is really pretty tame. It will be interesting to see how this first ever Rock Gone Wild weekend goes...

I think Farrah's death is way more news than the published emails between the SC governor and his mistress...I'm so sick of this type behavior in politics...

Farrah was an icon. She showed how a woman could shoot the knife out of an assailants hand, exit a pool like no other, drive like Mario Andretti, toss her hair and look over her shoulder like a dream, punch like Mike Tyson, comfort and mend a wounded comrade, leap from a speeding car, tease and laugh all the while being a lady or without breaking a nail. She was what all women can aspire to.

Mary – I can expect to see every Rotary member in my restaurant 3 or 4 times a month because of this stupid Taste of Algona – Right?

Same with all the other vendors...but your food really stands out...it probably affects Godfather's more or Family Table...it's just fun, there's no booze (unlike Chicago's), so maybe people let their kids run around and then drop them off at home and come to Sarah's...Tom, tell folks to bring their card to Sarah's tonight for a free cup of soup.

Each person has a card they purchased for $5...it has each vendor with a box next to the name...as you get your treat from each vendor they check the box next to the vendor name (so you can't go through twice) it's a nice 4" by 5" card easy to save and come out to Sarah's for a 1/2 price drink!
