Labor and delivery took exactly 4 hours and 2 min. Easy. I wish I had brought nail polis to do my toes, though honestly someone is in the room literally every 15 min to check something on me or Finn or the room. It's really annoying-of course they're just doing they're job. Finn has lots of sandy colored hair and he screamed the first two hours after birth but has been very quiet since.
Monica, why don't you come up here and do my toes and stock my fridge?
Hey, does anyone want a wallpaper steamer? I'm renting one for two nights for $60 but it's for sale for $150 had been $450. If you have a lot of wallpaper to take off it might be worth it. Lisa and Randy? It's from Home Depot.
Thank you to Frank for putting up Joe,Tom and Peter for the night. They re in Madison doing some sight seeing and then headed over to Milwaukee for a Brewers game.
Ooh Monica! Tell the boys that Uncle Tom played (w/my Dad, brother and brother-in-law) at that stadium with his Milwaukee Brewers Fantasy Baseball Team! :-)
it was fun having them over. the boys took turns torturing the cat, we walked to a Japanese restaurant to eat, and Joe tried his Japanese on the hostess who turned out to be Korean. this morning they're hitting the zoo then going to Milwaukee.
Eli's 6th grade team played the 7th grade Bulldogs and were slaughtered 23-0. Eli was first up to bat during the final inning of the game. He had one of the few hits of the game...a long pop fly past the LF'er! He got on 1st, stole 2nd and stole 3rd! Unfortunately, he never made a run as the 3rd out was achieved b4 he could score. The game was long and painful to watch...but, Eli' hit made it end on a wonderful note (for him)!
Quick, I need the recipe for that awesome German potato salad. I could wing it, but that was so good I want mine to taste just like that. I'm leaving this afternoon to the Mount Marty College mini-reunion at the farm where Stevo and I are responsible for Friday night's dinner and we're serving an Iowa dinner - grilled Iowa chops, Dad's cucumber salad, corn on the cob, homemade apple and pear sauce and (hopefully) yummy potato salad. Tom? Dad? Joe? Mary? Anyone?? Also an exotic note - Sturgis Full Throttle wine from our friends in South Dakota.
How's Finn today? And how's Em today? When do you go home (don't rush it)?
Grandpa's Pot Salad Peel, boil, cool and slice pots Thinly sliced yellow onions Dressing: One part salad oil One part white vinegar Not quite one part sugar Salt/pepper
I called Tom and he gave me the recipe. He's at Eli's game where he was suppose to "sub" = not play. Therefore, Donny and I stayed back for this one. Anywhoot, Eli IS playing(?) and just got on base! Go Eli Go! :-)
I went to the game over my lunch...it was great...Eli played a "pickle" and defended 3rd base, but the ball was overthrown...he then got on 1st base and then scored the tying run, they won 5-4 against Armweak (Armstrong)! Betty's team is playing Armweak in Armweak.
Donny and I scurried over there to watch the end of the game and it was over in a flash! Eli stole home to tie up the game and then, their next up to bat...another run came in for a Bears 5-4 Victory! :-)
We've lived in our unincorporated part of Algona for about 7 years. For much of that time there was only one other kid up here Eli's age. None Liam's age. So it could get boring for them on occasion.
So at the beginning of last school year we were happy when we learned that a Seton school family was moving in down the street. They had boys in each or our kid's classes.
The younger kid is a great friend to Liam. He's at our house almost everyday for the most part of the day.
Unfortunately, the older brother, the one in Eli's class has turned out to be a bit of a jerk. He's the jerk-jock type. QB on the football team. The pitcher. The point guard and so on. Thinks he's super cool and is unkind to others who he feels don't measure up...including Eli. Eli is slow of foot at this age and maybe not quite one of the cool kids.
Today, Eli missed a throw that he should have got. It was a bad throw but shoulda had it. No one scored on his error. But the jock-jerk yelled at Eli "You gotta catch the ball!" (Jerkboy was the pitcher who walked about 8 runners in 2 innings. I had to refrain from yelling belly itcher and whatnot from the stands).
Anyway, when Eli scored the tying run with his steal of home everyone in the dugout high-fived him. Except the jerk. Jerkboy just turned his head away from Eli when Eli approached him. What a dick!
I told Eli that unfortunately there are people in this world who's only joy is putting people down or just enjoy being in jerk in general.
Beyond boring you with this there are several instances where this kid has been mean to both our kids.
I've said to both Eli and Liam that someday, somebody is going to knock that kid on his ass with a knuckle sandwich. I kind of hope it's one of mine - before they turn 18.
Shouldn't the coach do something in a situation like that? I mean, if he yells at a player out on the field, and doesn't show good sportsmanship? I'd be mad at the coach, too. p
I won't talk to the coach unless I see more of this. I mean the only reason I'm tuned into it is because if prior nonbaseball related occurrences. I don't want to be the overprotective parent thus hogtying Eli in someway. Besides, I saw something yesterday that showed me that some on the team are onto this kid. His popularity is waning due to his general attitude. It should self correct. But if it doesn't...I did give my kids tacit prior approval to serve up a knuckle sandwich. Sometimes this is the only way to confront a bully. I've had to do it a few times in grade school. I guess even as an adult - though that may have been optional.
No...there will be no "knuckle sandwiches." His parents are aware that he has "issues." The problem is that they're not around all day to see a lot of it. The kids are left alone from morning until 6pm. I feel badly mostly for his little brother. He's such a bully. I tell the kids to be cordial and keep their distance. Examples: 1)The other day L went over there to look for his hat. He wouldn't let him in the house to search. I called...he answered and still refused to ME! I called the Mom's cell and told her that L had gone over there and I had called but no entry was allowed. SHE WAS HOME and said sure he can come over. When L got there the Dad was chewing him out. 2)L's friend who is here all the time and I take him everywhere and feed him almost daily...had a 1/2 B-Day Party last month. I guess it was a sleep over and he could only invite 4 boys. L wasn't invited bc "I get to see him all the time." Anywhoot, the bully-brother texted Eli (out of the blue) earlier in the week simply stating that "my brother's having a party and L isn't invited so you guys can't come over this weekend, so don't come." The day of the party (I didn't know at the time that it was a B-Day Party), L wanted to pop over and say "hi." Ultimately, his friend came over and asked him to play with everybody. I called the Mom and told her about the text and asked if L could come over...she was not happy with the older boy and said all 3 could come by...they had fun and stayed 'til 10. 3)This winter, The bully texted E and invited him to the "Y" but he didn't have a ride. I drove he and E there. The kid was meeting some other friends to play b-ball and completely blew off E. I picked them up early bc E called and wanted to leave. I gave the kid a "what for" stating that if he needs a ride somewhere just call and ask me directly...don't invite E for your ride. 4)The kid will ocassionally (when bored) come over and get everyone to play ball. If his bro and L don't wanna play just then...he'll say "Brother, then you gotta go home cuz I'm in charge." 5)The little brother can't call home to speak with his Mom as the older will quiz about "why" and say "NO" you can't do whatever and I'm not getting Mom. ***Just a FEW examples.*** This is beyond poor sportsmanship.
There's no "talking" with the parents about this as the kid will prolly just be awful to E and make matters even worse. I think the boys should keep their distance and I'll address things (if needed) as they come up. Yah think? E is aware that he can be a poop but is very tolerant and makes excuses for him. :-( L thinks he's really mean and feels badly for his friend.
Last weekend, Liam and his friend were scootering and left them in their front yard when they went into get a drink. This kid and his friend took them and went to Central Park.
I wanted to let you know that Josh and I will be in the Midwest the last week in July. We hope to be in Whittemore Thursday and Friday of that week, flying out Saturday. We are driving mom and dad's car up, stopping for a night at his dad's house in WI, moving on to MN to his mom and also to check on our house and sign lease etc. with our tenant, and then down to Iowa. We won't make it for the farm weekend, so if any are able to travel at that time, it would be great to see you. Take off a friday and come on up! P
Hello, Mom and I went up to Minneapolis this weekend to meet Finn. He really seems tiny but Emily said he is virtually the same length and weight as Jude and Sam when they were born. Of course, we did not see them immediately after they were born, as we did Finn, so that would have made a difference. He slept a lot during the day and Emily said he slept more Sat. night than any other night so she was able to get more sleep. She says that she is feeling very well. Scott has off for a couple more weeks and he enjoys playing with the boys. They got a small pool the day before we got there and Jude and Sammy really enjoy it. Jude must have spent 2 hours splashing around. Sam has really grown since we saw him last and has a very nice disposition, much like Jude's and it seems to me that Jude and Sam look more alike now than they used to. It was a fun visit. Dad
Just got back from the Milbrath Family vacation. Cathy and Steve took care of our plants while we were gone and Catie and Mia our pets. Thanks!
We had lots of fun, stayed at a very nice rental and would love to go again. Passed the Kennedy Family's favorite hot spot on the way there: The Mustard Museum - home of Pupon U.
Just catching up....regarding the bully in the neighborhood, I think you guys are handling it right. Eli is more tuned in to social nuances in his grade than you parents and knows how much he can take of this twerp. I would always be hesitant to talk to the coach unless there was some real serious bullying going on. Then, of course you step in. Otherwise the kid provides a valuable object lesson on how not to be.
Pat, you are coming up the one week when I can't get away at all! It's summer day camp week. Are you flying out of Omaha or Minneapolis?
I wanna ROCK!!! Nance, will you provide babysitting services while Monica and I rock out to Twisted Sister and Great White? The line-up of bands looks great! Also congrats Emily on Finn, maybe he'll want to see some bands in Algona. I've heard that guitar riffs help with math skills. And secondhand marijuana smoke helps develop music appreciation among all ages.
So, last night Josh was riding his bike home from work, as usual. A car drove by with a group of college age guys in it and one threw a bottle at him. It missed him barely, and then when he rode by the car at a stop sign the jerk said, I'm sorry I missed you. Josh was really wishing he'd had his water bottle on the bike bc he was going to squirt it in the car as he rode by. He's carrying it from now on for this purpose. P
Josh can't fight back...he may lose his scholarship!!! haha Seriously...that's awful, who raises kids like that??? Their parents probably went to Florida State.
ALGONA-"Unique" was the buzzword at the Algona City Council meeting on Monday, June 15. A unique group of circumstances was brought before the city council when Mike Lavelle made an appeal on the decision made by the roads and sewer committee to remove three fruitless snow crab trees from the front of his home at 223 East Call. Lavelle had received the city's regulations for trees planted in front of homes, and planted an acceptable type of tree in front of his home. However, the city has a limit of two trees along a parking front of any building, and has limitations on how close they can be to the curb and overhanging the roadway. "Trees need to be at least three feet back from the curb," Cole O'Donnell, city administrator, said. The trees Lavelle planted in May were too close to the curb, and would need to possibly be removed. Lavelle had already appealed his decision to the street and sewers committee, where it failed in a 2-1 vote. He then appealed that decision to the city council to see if there might be a way to make an exception in this instance. Lavelle didn't have all the information needed for a counterpoint presentation at Monday's meeting, and asked the council to give him a few more weeks to hear back from a professional landscaper before making a decision. "These trees are unique in that their roots grow straight down, as opposed to branching out in different directions," Lavelle said. "We chose them particularly because they would have a minimal damaging effect to the concrete." O'Donnell said that the longer the trees remain in the ground, the harder it will be to transplant them without any damage to the trees, regardless if the city or Lavelle were to be doing the removal. "Our hope is that if we needed to remove the trees, we would replace them somewhere else and hopefully save the trees," O'Donnell said. The council passed their rulings on trees in 1996 to adopt the SUIDOS community standard for trees, regulating that people could only have two trees in front of their home. Trees planted before 1996 were grandfathered in. "I think we need to be real careful not to open a can of worms here," said Howard Esser. "When these rules and regulations were set, they were set for a reason. If we adjust one of them, we could be seeing more and more people bringing their arguments to the council." "As a member of the Algona City Council, we're able to make decisions on unique basis," said Tim Lighter. "That's why I cast the lone yes vote on this for the Street and Sewer committee and why I don't think tabling it will hurt as much as people think." O'Donnell also stated that the Street and Sewer committee weren't trying to single out the Lavelle's, but that they enforce problems as they see them. "We're busy enough, we just don't have time to police all of these problems," O'Donnell said. The issue was tabled until the next city council meeting.
Last night we took our elderly neighbor to a College World Series game, or she took us. She's been going for 50 years and has missed 7 games in all that time. Her two daughters (our age) live with her and usually take her but one just had surgery and the other just broke her leg, so they put out a call on our neighborhood association email list and people signed up to take her to the games. This lady walks s-l-o-w-l-y, nearly bent double over a walker. She has a whole game kit with blanket, rain hat, small traveling trophy (her section has a "guess the attendance" traveling trophy which is a kewpie doll and I won last night) seat pads, etc. We took a shuttle bus from CB and I got to ride the handicapped lift with her up into the bus - kind of scary - and once she gets planted in her seat at the stadium she's there for the duration. Last night's game went 12 innings, with Virginia losing to Arkansas in a great game. We were all for Virginia because their coach is from CB and assistant coached at Notre Dame before going to the head job at Virginia. Our seats were 8 rows up behind home plate. We didn't want to do this but thought we should - we've had a couple small disputes over the years, mostly because she comes off as bossy or crabby - but I'm glad we did. Pretty neat lady, if sometimes difficult to live next to. She said she'd like to go with us again next year. Great game!
She was a schoolteacher for 40-some years and she likes to yell in a shrill voice, "Hit it where they ain't!" All kinds of retired coaches, the head groundskeeper, CWS officials were coming up to say hello all night and she told us some great baseball stories about players she's seen here who became famous.
As far as titles go, I think it would be hard to top Supreme Leader.
Yes, Finn's middle name is Michael. He is doing well but only sleeps in his car seat or in someone's arms. Is it bad for his bones to spend hours and hours in his car seat? I think we did the same thing with Jude and Sam.
My OT friend says that it's best not to allow him to sleep in the car seat all the time bc: -can create a flat spot -better/easier to mold his sleeping habits early on -torticollis: A contracted state of the neck muscles that causes the neck to rotate and tilt sideways, forwards, or backwards. Also called wryneck. **A car seat is a great temporary place for a baby with an ear infection and an elevated head is important.
I think I recall Granny telling me, years ago, that Emily was a baby that she had to drive around town to get her to stop crying and fall asleep. Am I remembering right?
I forget which of our kids it was and I've seen a handful of infants like this but they demanded to be held while the parent (or whoever) was standing. They preferred pacing while being held but demanded at the very least you be standing. Don't even think about sitting down on the couch. That isn't good enough. Stand and hold me dammit! Lest I scream DHS summoning screams.
Our kids have no realization how lucky they are not long ago buried in the backyard.
Both Emma and Mary were held a lot. Mary ended up spending a lot of time in the car seat.
She was also in the front pac a lot. I loaded dishes like that, I folded clothes like that, etc. She was 2 days old and fast asleep... I tried to lay her in her crib and she grabbed on to my shirt as she awoke and started crying... that is how it was for the entire first year. It only slightly improved during the second year.
If you think it's because Finn's stomach hurts, try putting a slight wedge under the baby mattress. We had one in the crib and in the cradle. Having one end higher helps the bubbles find a way out.
I believe I held Grace for six weeks without ever sitting down or sleeping. We didn't know honey was bad back then (it's natural, right?) and I used to put a little on a pacifier and put her in the swing with it but then we would have to keep rewinding it very quietly every five minutes. Why won't those kids let you sit down, I wonder? They're too young to be trying to manipulate you or win a power struggle. They just want you to hold them STANDING UP.
We also used to take Grace on car rides. The other three were pretty easy except for the usual ear infections etc. I totally can believe that sleep deprivation is a form of torture. There were times we would have paid someone a lot of money to hold the baby STANDING UP so we could sleep a couple hours.
Mom and Dad are on their way to a Deacon Retreat somewhere in Nebraska (OK, it's Skyler but I don't know how to spell it)...they'll be back here Sunday night after stopping in Council Bluffs on Sunday around lunch time... I watched Betty's team play Algona Middle School for a few innings today (over my lunch hour)Betty is a VERY good pitcher, fun to watch...Seton won!
There once was a family LaVelle Who fixed up their house pretty swell But their beautiful trees Gave some heebee-jeebees When a variance would do just as well.
There once were three beautiful crabs That caused some hot Council confabs When LaVelles wouldn't move'em Cause it didn't behoove'em To submit to tight-ass power grabs.

Welcome to the world, Finn Thomas.
Uncle Tom
Love the name! One that I suggested...I thought about Finn and Ian for Liam. God bless you and I'm so glad for you and Scott! :-)
BTW: He is beautiful! :-)
Which hospital?
Happy Birthday Finn!
Many congrats to the Guilliatt Family!
Has he said any words yet?
Fairview Southdale. In Edina.

He's beautiful. Have the other boys seen him yet?
How big was he? Is he tall/long?

Every Thrusday morning I read the Algona Upper Des Moines online. Today they've not uploaded it. I'm annoyed, it's like the Sunday paper not arriving.

Instead I'm reading the memo in my box: immediate actions to take in the event of an active shooter in the museum.

There was a lot of fan noise and player noise at that time. The coach didn't hear it.
The coach is a good guy. Always positive. Not one of those downer guys - never shows disgust. Only encouragement.

I would talk to the coach about it.
Just ask him to talk to the team and this kid about showing good sportsmanship and and respect for others.

knuckle sandwich would still be OK. What a doodoopoop.
Last week, he rode his bike home from the pool (holding his bros sandals) while his brother walked barefooted down Orton.
Last weekend, Liam and his friend were scootering and left them in their front yard when they went into get a drink. This kid and his friend took them and went to Central Park.
One time Tom locked me out on the roof of the house so I had to jump off the roof to get down.
Nauhty! Maybe, it's karma. "Don't you put that evil karma on us, Tommy-Bobby!"
Congratulations Guilliatts. Finn looks like a fine lad. Not too dandy and eager to share his doodoopoop.

We won't make it for the farm weekend, so if any are able to travel at that time, it would be great to see you. Take off a friday and come on up!

Hello,
Mom and I went up to Minneapolis this weekend to meet Finn.
Dad
I'm filling out a form and it asks for my "race" Do I put caucasian, white or simply yes???
Never mind :-)
Welcome, little Finn!
You sure look cute and you are sooo lucky to be born into such a nice family.
Can't wait to see you!

And Happy Birthday, Danny!
What did you do for your birthday? Did your dad grill steaks?

Just got back from the Milbrath Family vacation. Cathy and Steve took care of our plants while we were gone and Catie and Mia our pets. Thanks!
We had lots of fun, stayed at a very nice rental and would love to go again. Passed the Kennedy Family's favorite hot spot on the way there: The Mustard Museum - home of Pupon U.

By the way...
Finn what?

Saw the pix that Grandpa sent out of Em's kids. Boy oh Boy oh Boy...those two make beautiful boys! You should keep making them!
Is it mere coincidence that David Letterman gets married and then shortly thereafter apparently goes mad?
Tom
Just catching up....regarding the bully in the neighborhood, I think you guys are handling it right. Eli is more tuned in to social nuances in his grade than you parents and knows how much he can take of this twerp. I would always be hesitant to talk to the coach unless there was some real serious bullying going on. Then, of course you step in. Otherwise the kid provides a valuable object lesson on how not to be.
Pat, you are coming up the one week when I can't get away at all! It's summer day camp week. Are you flying out of Omaha or Minneapolis?
"SISTER SARAH'S Gone Wild"
August 20-23rd!

We are flying out of MN. It was cheapest for us.
Sorry to miss you!!
p
Pat, what are the exact dates that you will be at the farm?
Mia got her cast off today! We're going swimming tomorrow.
Joe K-You gotta fight-for your right-to parrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrty!
P
Josh can't fight back...he may lose his scholarship!!! haha
Seriously...that's awful, who raises kids like that??? Their parents probably went to Florida State.
Hey...
What is Finn's middle name?
Also - didn't Dad once use the hose to cool off some obnoxious teens/young adults once?
Lisa
Well, I was pretty pissed when I heard bc these aren't nice little bike paths, they're busy roads with cars going 45-50 mph.
Michael.

Mary and Mike are causing trouble again. Front page article Algona paper. Sorry...no time to post a link.

I read it. Unique is the catch word.

"We chose them particularly because they would have a minimal damaging effect to the concrete."
O'Donnell said that the longer the trees remain in the ground, the harder it will be to transplant them without any damage to the trees, regardless if the city or Lavelle were to be doing the removal.
If we adjust one of them, we could be seeing more and more people bringing their arguments to the council."
"As a member of the Algona City Council, we're able to make decisions on unique basis," said Tim Lighter. "That's why I cast the lone yes vote on this for the Street and Sewer committee and why I don't think tabling it will hurt as much as people think."
O'Donnell also stated that the Street and Sewer committee weren't trying to single out the Lavelle's, but that they enforce problems as they see them.

Thats a long time to not get up.

Does the Creighton Bluejay have a name?
As far as titles go, I think it would be hard to top Supreme Leader.
Yes, Finn's middle name is Michael. He is doing well but only sleeps in his car seat or in someone's arms. Is it bad for his bones to spend hours and hours in his car seat? I think we did the same thing with Jude and Sam.
Sean spent hours and hours in a swing. It was the only time he wasn't crying. He's not a cry baby anymore. He got it out of his system.
Billy Bluejay
re: Old lady sitting for a long time without getting up....depends.
Depends on what? Ha ha
My OT friend says that it's best not to allow him to sleep in the car seat all the time bc:
-can create a flat spot
-better/easier to mold his sleeping habits early on
-torticollis: A contracted state of the neck muscles that causes the neck to rotate and tilt sideways, forwards, or backwards. Also called wryneck.
**A car seat is a great temporary place for a baby with an ear infection and an elevated head is important.
Emily, do you have a sling? They make really cool ones now, but even then, you can't hold him ALL the time. How does Sam like the baby?
Tom
Lisa
I believe I held Grace for six weeks without ever sitting down or sleeping. We didn't know honey was bad back then (it's natural, right?) and I used to put a little on a pacifier and put her in the swing with it but then we would have to keep rewinding it very quietly every five minutes. Why won't those kids let you sit down, I wonder? They're too young to be trying to manipulate you or win a power struggle. They just want you to hold them STANDING UP.
Mike told the City Council that he has a poem about a tree, but that he would save it for the next meeting.
Quick - a limerick contest about the trees!
There once was a family LaVelle
Who fixed up their house pretty swell
But their beautiful trees
Gave some heebee-jeebees
When a variance would do just as well.
There once were three beautiful crabs
That caused some hot Council confabs
When LaVelles wouldn't move'em
Cause it didn't behoove'em
To submit to tight-ass power grabs.
my apologies to the nice people on the City Council...
someone needs to invent a robot nanny. one that holds a kid upright and moves around the room.

Don't you think it's rude for someone who is sick and thinks he has the flu to stay at work? Given the pandemic?
p
Yeah! Suggest he takes the day off...can you?
Oh I did. He finally left around 2 for the dr.
