Happy Birthday Samuel Walsh! :-)
Wow Em, you sure make beautiful babies! You too Scott! :-)

SuperBowlParty was fun at Granny's last night. Gotta call it Granny's 'cuz we referred to it as Mary and Mike's (yesterday) and the boys said to call it Granny's even when she's not there. Ha, ha...funny...cute. Anywhoot, the room was rearranged to get the best viewing of the game. The coffee table was set-up with awesome food...which Eli and Liam practically put a bib on and pulled themself up to it like it was their personal smorgasbord! Aunt Mary's double-chocolate chip muffins were the hit-o-the-evening with the kiddies. Betty won the end-score contest with a prediction of 18-12...Giants. I think Giants? Hmm.
The social event was very fun...game (yawn) hate football. However, I gotta say the last four minutes and particularly the last 55 seconds (and, that last minute...twice) were very, very exciting! :-)
Go Giants! WooHoo...no more football until August! :-) :-)

Awww...he looks so wide awake and focussed! Does Jude still like him or is the thrill gone?
Brian was in a pool where he had to get a score where the last digits of the score were 7 and 4. Who'da guessed? The girls were cute, running around in their Mardi Gras masks, but disappointingly nonchalant about the whole crayfish Lisa used as garnish. Favorite commercials, anyone? I liked the one with the talking stain.

I always get that sad, empty feeling some of you are experiencing right now after the World Series. Only I hear coaching staffs are reporting this week already! Woo-hoo!

I was supposed to take a midterm exam online this weekend but (the good news) the entire documents folder of our course, including the exam, has vanished from the computers so we didn't have to. The bad news is that it had all the handouts, notes and powerpoints for the course in it, so I bet our professor is not nearly as happy as I was. This freed me up to have a fun and relaxed Super Bowl/Mardi Gras party. Now I'll probably have to take the test in class tonight, so better go.

Hi Everyone,
Wasn't that a nice picture of Samuel Walsh? Congratulations to Emily & Scott. Good photos of Phelan, Emily and Jude, too.
We especially enjoyed the first half of the game last night because our TV quit at halftime and we had to listen to the second half on the radio. Just like the good old days. We were especially happy with way Justin Tuck (ND 05) played. He was certainly the defensive star.
There is a new assistant pastor here at St. Jude's. He is an African American and very black. His name is Father Benedict Ndeyekiyo. He speaks with an accent that is hard to understand but he is very animated and friendly and his homilies have great content, when you can understand them. He started this morning's by asking if there are any Giant fans in church. There were many. Then he asked about the Patriots and there were a muted few.
However, what motivated me to write about him is something he said in a homily a week ago. He emphasized that our baptismal call to bring others closer to Christ does not diminish as we get older. I was aware of this, of course, but what caught my attention is when he said, "Parents and grandparents, you have great influence on your children and grandchildren. Never stop teaching them. They will listen to you. They may not always pay attention, but don't stop."
That caused me to ask myself if I have done enough lately. I decided that I have not, so my theme today is regularly going to Mass with the children on Sundays and holy days.
Your children know that the Church teaches that we are obliged to go to Mass on those days (with a few exceptions) and before they are very old they have learned that one of the ten commandments is to keep holy the Sabbath. I just wonder what goes through their minds when their parents skip a Sunday or two, or more. They must be very conflicted. (That is a nice way of saying scandalized.) I can't imagine what effect it has on a child if the parent does not go to Mass at all.
So, at the beginning of this new year, now that most of us have already abandoned our new year resolutions, why don't we resolve to teach our children and grandchildren the best way possible---by good example. That is the best way to teach them that our creator, to whom we owe everything, deserves our honor, worship and praise, and the best way that Catholics have of offering God the honor, worship and praise that is his due is through participation at Sunday Mass.
That's my thought for the day. I hope you will take a minute to ask yourself how it applies to you.
Happy New Year!!
Love, Dad

Joe2~ You're right (of course!). When my folks visit...my Mom sleeps in Liam's room with the boys and my Dad sleeps in Eli's room. Each night, she says prayers, aloud, with them. They LOVE it and I'm glad she shares her faith in this special way. :-)

Em~ Are you getting any sleep? How do you feel?

Lisa~ What is your email address?

Phelan~ How was Cali? BTW: How many "Bob the Builders" does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Pat~ Tan, yet?

Cathy~ Did you pass your test?

Creigton is on ESPNU tonight taking on UNI at 8:00 PM CST.

Anonymous said...

That is ESPNU not ESPN BTW.

I took my test - don't know yet how I did. It seemed OK, except I had to take it on a laptop in the Creighton library and I'm so used to thumping on my prehistoric keyboard and on the laptop that made the text jump around all over the place. And it was at 9:00PM at the end of our class and my mind shuts down around 8:00. But everyone else was in the same boat.
Now I'm fighting with my printer, but I will prevail. (New computers soon...new computers soon...)
Mia called Stevo last night to tell him, "I have to have suguwy." She's getting tubes in her ears and losing her adenoids. Molly showed her online what an infected ear looks like inside, and she thought that was cool, but she said her ears don't look like that.

Anonymous said...

See if Mia's Doctor will take a pix of her adenoids. Eli's Doctor did and then, drew a shark coming at 'em with its mouth open wide and wrote, "Good job, Eli." Eli thought that was very cool and showed it to his friends at school. :-)

Anonymous said...

Ha! I guess this is Dr. McGruff, not Mia's regular doctor, Dr. Okoruwa, who is from Africa and gets a real kick out of Mia. It would be sort of like asking Doc from Gunsmoke to take a picture and draw a shark. Or maybe House. C'mon, Molly, I dare ya!

Anonymous said...

He doesn't have to draw a shark...that's just what Eli's Doctor did. It was perfect though, because the adenoids looked like two globs-o-flesh! :-)
I'm not sure what I thought they would look like...I guess I just suspected they would look more, "formed." Hmm.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Boy. (from John Lennon, circa 1980)

I'm protesting the super bowl pool at our party...I picked the Giants by 3 points, so, since no one had the right score I'm claiming victory...(sorry Betty)...what do y'all think?

m.e.

Anonymous said...

It depends on the rules laid down for that pool. I always think there should be a booby prize for the one farthest from the final score.

I called Molly and she had already gotten an email invitation from Barack so she was either going to try herself or call Brian if he hadn't already started working for the snowplowing guys. We're having a snowstorm right now and there are dozens of accidents in Omaha...snow over slush, so I bet it's a mess over there. But it might cut down on the number of people going for tickets, too. I'll be gone Thursday at a retreat, staying at a plush lakeside hotel at Panora with a fireplace in every room, but I volunteered Stevo to babysit.

Anonymous said...

Sounds yummy...fireplace in every room!
I have a new twitch!

My fav. commercial: The Mr. Peanut one with the "ugly" girl, it was funny...also the talking stain WAS funny, and you can't lose with the baby ones. Coke ones were great..Budweiser (for all they spent) weren't memorable.

my trainer missed his flight, so we didn't start until after 1 in the afternoon yesterday, worked late to get caught up. this class is for engineers designing a wireless network, so of course i'm pretty much lost. i'm gonna run and grab dinner then spend the night studying.

they should give Mia the adenoids in a jar to put on a shelf in her room. then she can sit and listen to Ashley Simpson's Piece's of Me album and stare at them.

i liked the bridgestone commercial with alice cooper and richard simmons.

I puked twice today. The first time when the news played some clip of Hillary at a rally and the crowd had one of those synchronized clapping sessions going on. Hillary was on the stage - up there with her phony smile going back and forth. She was clapping too. Her arms stretched out clapping along with the crowd and doing that dumb bounce she does at these moments. That was a bile through the nose kind of puke.

The second puke was when Barack O'slimy was taking the stage at a similar rally. As he came up the steps to the noise of the crowd and the music he had the demeanor of a punk coming into a bar scene thinking he was king of the world. He had his tongue slightly sticking out of his mouth as a cocky punk is apt to do, and was bouncing his head to the music. That was also a bile through the nose kind of puke finished off with a dry heave session.

Use mayo (no Miracle whip)
celery...onion...RAISINS...bits of pecan(or almond or walnut) lemon juice and a bit more curry. Serve with crackers or small croissants:-) Then vote for Obama!

Mom and I went to see "juno" today. I loved it. It's not perfect, but it was pretty good, I thought Did anyone else see it? I've now seen all oscar nominated films. I think that's the first time I've seen them all before the oscars.
p

Anonymous said...

I always think fish tacos are better when they are not breaded if they are homemade. At least, I'm not good at breading fish. Mmm, last night for Fat Tuesday we had shrimp jambalaya and cheesy grits. Then at the store today I bought breaded okra to fry up with the fish Friday. I think I must unconsciously be yearning for a trip to the South.

Re: the ashes-
At church today, the homily was about praying in private, not showing off my connection with God, religious feelings, etc. So, I thought this meant it was okay to take off the ashes. Which I did. A little guidance here?

Anonymous said...

That's funny, Molly asked me almost the same question. The readings were about not showing off how holy you are, or for us, like letting everyone know how much you give to the poor or whatever. But they were written in and for a society where it was assumed that everyone fasted, gave to the poor, etc., because everyone was a Jew and it was part of their lives. But there is also a ancient tradition of being "sealed" or marked as belonging to God, and nowadays it sort of gives witness to our yearning for God. There's a fine line between showing off your piety and just showing it because it says something about you and about God. Anyway, we always have to set up extra seating because people who never come to church other times somehow want to wear that symbol that says something about your values, or hopes, or something. I think it's good.

Kickball-with bases-Like we used to play at St. Cecelia's-like we used to play at Nichols.
Joe IV and his buddies used to play kickball alla time at recess until they gradually shifted to football around 6th grade. One recess, when he was in 8th grade, all of the 8th grade boys, for some reason, played the 4th and 5th grade boys in kickball. They got waxed. the 4/5th graders played avery day and the 8th graders hadn't played for years. Big day for bragging rights for the 4/5th graders, wiping out the 8th graders in an athletic event. It wasn't even close.

The Teacher Applicant

After being interviewed by the school administration, the teaching prospect said, 'Let me see if I've got this right:

'You want me to go into that room with all those kids, correct their disruptive behavior, observe them
for signs of abuse, monitor their dress habits, censor their T-shirt messages, and instill in them a love for learning.

'You want me to check their backpacks for weapons, wage war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, and raise their sense of self esteem and personal pride.

'You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play, and how to register to vote, balance a checkbook, and apply for a job.

'You want me to check their heads for lice, recognize signs of antisocial behavior, and make sure that they all pass the state exams.

'You want me to provide them with an equal education regardless of their handicaps, and communicate regularly with their parents/guardians by letter, telephone, email, newsletter, and report card.

'You want me to do all this with a piece of chalk, a blackboard, a bulletin board , a few books, a big smile, and a starting salary that qualifies me for food stamps.

'You want me to do all this and then you tell me... 'I CAN'T PRAY?'

I am passing this on to you because it definitely works and we could all use a little more calmness in our lives.
By following simplest advice heard on the Dr. Phil show, you too can find inner peace.
Dr. Phil proclaimed, "The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started and never finished."

I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn't finished, and before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of White Zinfandel, a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream, a package of Oreos, the remainder of my Prozac prescription, the rest of the cheesecake, a bag of Doritos and a box of chocolates.

You have no idea how freaking good I feel right now!

Think Hillary will release her tax returns? Obama pulled a good one broaching the topic.
Howard Deans pooping his pants at the prospect of a long primary campaign leading to the convention. He made a comment to the effect that if this continues into the summer the candidates should get together and figure this out. Heck-that's what the convention is for. I've said from the beginning it would be great if the camaigns went into the convention without a clear winner. How entertaining! Smoky rooms and deal cutting. Biden delegates, all delegates, actually relevant.Riots in the streets and reporters getting punched out! Roll call after roll call vote and finally a compromise candidate...What fun!

Anonymous said...

Someone a while back posted on this blog that they thought Biden would be a good running mate for Obama. If you think Biden is the man to hold his hand through presidential challenges then you should have supported Biden to begin with.

Tom

Anonymous said...

I said that, but after Biden had stepped out.
P

Anonymous said...

So you do think Biden is the guy to hold his hand?

Anonymous said...

I'm with Joe on the idea of a fun convention. Just hope it doesn't turn into a Chicago-style riot. It'll be the making of another Dan Rather.

Lisa

Anonymous said...

Yes. that's exactly what I was saying.

Actually what i was THINKING at the time was that it would be advantageous politically for either candidate - the woman or the black one - to have a WHITE MALE running mate.

P

Anonymous said...

So you're you are entering race into your assessment of the worth of a candidate?

Anonymous said...

No.

p

Anonymous said...

Actually, if the Democrats wanted to win this one they should have pulled Harold Ford Jr. off the sidelines. He's a young black male without the preachiness of a Zion Baptist minister that I can't stand in Obama. Obama is all fluff. Ford speaks in specifics about real and viable solutions. I'd vote for him.

Tom

Anonymous said...

Why why why do you all think Obama needs anyone to hold his hand...He's raised more money than ANYONE and won more states than ANYONE...he's momentun is VERY good right now, Biden would be BAD for him at this moment...maybe he'll let him on stage with him in Denver this August, just to help "pass the hat" to pay off his debt cause he never raised ANY money. Biden is bad for Obama...To Barack I say," Be careful, his sister is nice, the brothers are cool...JUST SAY NO!"

m.e.

Anonymous said...

I disagree Mary. it's nothing about handholding. It's about people with preconceived notions about black people, or about women, who would feel more comfortable with a white male around him. I'm saying for those ignorant voters, he's a help.

p

Anonymous said...

Tom..Yes, I hear Harold Ford Jr. is ALL the rage!!! He's gonna give a Grammy away on Sunday, and dance it up with Aretha and hold Stevie Wonder's hand, and rub Will Smith's chest with oil...why or why didn't the Dems choose the right Black guy!!!

Emily - I didn't have time to address your earlier statement/question about whether or not I would vote for someone who would continue the war with no long term solution and so on.

Think of it this way. There is going to be a far worse war in that region. Maybe later than sooner. Hopefully. But if you think the Chinese who are building a petroleum based economy are going to not invade the region in the coming decades you are wrong. They need oil and are developing a military to ensure they get it. If we already are "occupiers" in the region the eventuality of that war may be mitigated.

Tom

Anonymous said...

Maybe our military could buy cheap weapons from the Chinese. You know, to save a little dough. They'll take an IOU.

Now that was funny. What is the Chinese's return policy on their cheap weapons. Because anytime I get some chinese made trinket from Kmart it breaks after a week.
