Happy birthday, Molly! Have fun! See you Thursday!

So, who's planning on going to the Iowa State/Northern Illinois game next Thursday? It starts at 7. I think we're going to tailgate.

Happy Birthday, Molly! I really like this picture of you and Brian. We'll toast to you this weekend.

Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad! Is this 58?

Body pump is an excercise class that consists of hundreds of lunges and squats and chest, arm and shoulder work with a step and a barbell. Most of the others in the class have heavier weights on their barbells, but I am only one of two that does real push ups. So I guess I have that going for me.

Thanks Everyone! Emily, I loved body pump when I used to take it! Way better than aerobics. Happy Anniversary G and G!

Here is a report on Slam for those of you who know him:
Well, we were mostly cheered up after we saw him, because he seems to be improving so fast. We were there for about an hour and he was worn out by the end, just from trying to stay plugged in to the conversation. He has trouble thinking of the right words and there are lots of pauses where he closes his eyes and puts the words together and sometimes a totally different word comes out. Still no knowing if this is due mostly to the swelling in his brain, which would be good because it will improve, or if some or all of it is from having parts of his brain removed. It's hard to tell how much he is intellectually affected, if at all, because he doesn't like to talk much. He was using his right hand pretty well and we didn't see him walk, but I guess he kind of shuffles along right now. His physical therapy regimen is brutal and he told us "It...(long pause) SUCKS!" He also has some holes in his memory which may or may not come back. I'm sure he will continue to improve and he was in great physical shape to begin with so that will help. Pat also seemed in better spirits than in our couple of phone conversations with her earlier. So, it could be worse and might get lots better, I guess. Please continue to keep him in your prayers.

Cathy, You wondered where the photo of Mom and me was taken. It was in the lobby of the other hotel at Joe and Brianne's wedding. I believe it was taken by Desi. Dad

The kids start school at 7:30 here. And since I'm one of those people that needs 2 cups of coffee before I see anyone in the morning (otherwise I'm an insufferable jerk) I am getting up at 4:45 every school day.

I wish it was summer.

Are you in bed by 8pm?

Ed X said...

I would be a jerk if I got up at 4:45 everyday.

c said...

Slam is doing so much better that they put an alarm on his wheelchair because he kept getting up and was practicing walking alone in his room and they don't want him to fall.

Anonymous said...

Glad to hear about Slam.

Major annoyance of the summer: Our adoption agency here in Florida filed bankruptcy. Luckily we are doing the adoption through an agency in St. Paul but it means major hassles and some extra cash because we have to re-update our home study (done by an in-state agency). And we have to have all our clearances (state local and federal) stating we are not criminals renewed, along with new medical clearances.

P

c said...

Sorry to hear that, Pat. Does it mean any significant delays to the whole process?

Anonymous said...

Yea Slam! That's great news.

Pat, that stinks. I hope it doesn't slow things up too much.

I'm hoping that mostly it's just a hassle, but I'm not sure yet. I need to hear back from our St. Paul agency for sure. The St. Paul agency is supposedly one of the most 'legit' or well respected which is why we went with it, and they will only work with certain other agencies. I need to make sure the new FL agency my social worker is with now will be accepted by the St. Paul one. Otherwise it will be a hassle, and delay things a little, and expensive.
I just can't believe the agency never contacted me to let me know they were folding.

I just got the roster for Jude's soccer team and there's a Phelan Smith on the team. I've never met another Phelan besides our's.

Jude starts Kindergarten tomorrow. Yay! Went yesterday for paperwork day and they have already started pressuring people for a fundraising event in Sept and we had to turn in our parish pledge cards to be checked out of paperwork day. Let the fundraising begin. This is a turn-off.

Anonymous said...

Doesn't that just disgust you. I get that they are trying accomplish as much as possible with one trip but the timing is so bad.

molly said...

What did Jude think of Kindergarten?

Hi everyone. I will be closing my hotmail account soon b/c it keeps sending spam to people. My new email address is emilycstraub@gmail.com.

Speaking of new emails, I am going to send out a new address list soon. Thanks, Ed, for keeping such an updated copy! If anyone else would like to send me any new contact info, my email is ellen.jayjack@gmail.com.

Anyone planning on attending the first ISU game tomorrow? We were thinking about tailgating, but since we can watch the game on TV, we will probably do that at home instead. Anyone passing through on the way to the farm are welcome!

ellen said...

For those of you going to the farm, what type of food are you bringing? I am going to make some coffee cake and an italian/pizza-ish pasta salad.

We had the hottest summer on record down here:

"In the West Palm Beach area, daily maximum temperatures reached or exceeded 90 degrees on 79 days."

Add the humidity and it equals quite an intense summer. This morning I felt a hint of cooler weather. Thank goodness.

I, yes I, am going to the ISU game along with Anne, from my office, and Husker fans Mike and Mary. Mike seemed honestly surprised when I told him he shouldn't wear Cornhusker crap to watch the surging Cyclones blow the sniveling Northern Illinois Huskies back to Evanston. Typical oblivious parochial world view of the average Nebraska fan.
Joe-are you still going? we'll be hitting a couple tailgaters but would like to swing by and mooch off yours.
Aren't you all jealous? College football? Tailgaters?

joe j said...

I'm not going to make it up to Ames for the game. We are having some friends in from out of town that I didn't know about last week.

Ed X said...

University of Northern Illinois is in Dekalb. If you send them back to to Evanston you would be sending them back to Northwestern which is East of Northern Illinois.......

I am jealous of the tailgating, but I was able to do some last weekend when I went to the Chicago IRL race.

I was looking online and it doesn't look like the ISU/UNI game is on TV in Chicago. What's up with that?

Forecast for Decatur City IA for the weekend: sunny with highs in the 70's and lows in the 50's - 60's. Could it be more perfect?

We're bringing a crock pot full of beef with buns for sandwiches, a couple dozen hard-boiled eggs and some baked goodies for breakfasts or desserts. Maybe a big stockpot for boiling potatoes or corn or whatever. Maybe a beer or two. We plan to leave Friday morning. Can't wait!

em said...

Hey Molly, Jude seems to really like Kindergarten. When I picked him up yesterday he said, "I love Kindergarten!" He was impressed by the walking taco they had for lunch and today he gets a meatball sandwich - one of his favorite things to eat.

em said...

To the farm I'll bring a bunch of lunchmeat, cheese and salads from some reputable grocery store deli. Also maybe a beer or two.

Have fun at the Iowa State game. Go Cyclones.

Anonymous said...

To the farm I will bring a cherry pie. Hand crafted with someone else's crafty hands and some sausages for breakfast and fruit salad. And maybe a beer or two.

Sorry we can't make it to the farm this year. No accrued vacation time for me. Also, with it being the first year for the boys at a new school we didn't want to pull them on Friday. So we would have had to travel 12 hours each way with only 3 days off. Just didn't work.

I'm practically giddy with excitement. Both Eli and Liam have games tonight. Liam looks good. I go to most of his practices as they start at 6pm. He is starting both ways - offensive and defensive tackle.

Not sure if Eli is starting but they've moved him from nose tackle to outside linebacker. He said the kid that had the spot wasn't containing plays and the coaches liked the way Eli played it so it's his. He plays offensive tackle. Again, not sure if he is starting.

My giddiness is also because college football starts tonight and all the way through the weekend.

Isn't it fantastic that they put Iowa and Nebraska in the same division?

Anyway, have fun at the farm. Hope the forecast is right.

We'll miss you. I think this is going to be a banner year for homemade pie, or in Monica's case, someone-else's-home-made pie.

We're watching the Cyclones trounce whoever-it-is on TV tonight and leaving tomorrow morning.

This morning a kid came into my 8:00 a.m. class about an hour after it had started. I was in the middle of talking and he walked in and took a seat in the front (meaning not a subtle entrance). When I was done talking he came up to me and he just billowed pot odor. He said he had been transferred into my class, but then he left after about 10 minutes and didn't come back.
He's off to a great start his first year of college.

For some reason Iowa State is playing on cable down here. That has NEVER happened. Florida Atlantic, 5 miles away, is not on.

The beach situation—at least for East Coasters—is looking pretty grim this Labor Day weekend, as Hurricane Earl makes his way north. But if you’re stuck inside, there’s still fun to be had over at ancestry.com: The family-tree building Web site is offering up its entire archive for free through September 6. The site provides a treasure-trove of data, including passport applications, naturalization records, Ellis Island oral histories, and passenger and immigration lists.

Wonderful weekend, endless food, abundance of desserts (do diabetics all go crazy making goodies they shouldn't even be thinking about, much less eating, whenever they have a good excuse?)nice efficiently-executed games, although I think we need to have 5 events. They were over almost too quickly.

I forgot to say, congratulations, Joe4!

I vote for Standing on One Foot at next year's games.
