Happy Birthday, Grace! At this time (9:30) in 1976 I was parked along a country road out of gas having mild contractions and laughing in a sort of annoyed way. Look how great that turned out!
I almost forgot to tell you about our "adventure" on Monday!
I had Emma and Mary in the car. We were headed west on Broadway toward Omaha. I see patrol cars flying towards the I-480 bridge. As I drive I see more police and sheriff cars head that way, including many unmarked cars.
I am thinking, that must be some accident, hope I can get around it on the bridge.
No accident! I suddenly find myself on the one-way bridge with no exit upon about 15 law-enforcment cars - all officers are out of their cars with their weapons drawn and aimed at a car pulled over on my side of the bridge. Some officers are getting their rifles out of the trunk.
Yikes! We all inch over and try to get the heck out of Dodge before the bullets fly.
They never blocked off the bridge from either side. Those eastbound would have really gotten hit by a hail of bullets had any thing progressed.
I was looking at guns and a way out. Mary found the alleged perp and could describe him to a T.
You think you know some Spanish. You use a free translation engine to produce instructions for non-English-speaking parents for First Communion practice. When you check it by translating back to English, you get sentences like "After the children go above Father to receive Communion, the parents leave the north and south banks to communicate and the children can go back to the sidelines." I gotta learn more Spanish.
The deal on the bridge was a couple of guys who held up a convenience store in CB and got nailed returning to Omaha. Mary gave me her description of the one guy who was out of the car as they went past and it was amazingly detailed, right up to the resigned/sad/angry look on the one guy's face as he stood by his car with his hands up.
We need to have a cigarette party. B. Obama said that he would not raise taxes on people who make less than $250,000 a year and here I am - less than 3 months after his inauruation paying more taxes on cigarettes. He's a jerk and a liar. The price for a pack of Cigarettes in Chicago is now $9.50 and they are talking about the state putting another $1 tax on top of that.
Woo-Hoo, five hours of gardening/ lawn care yesterday! Although I didn't even plant anything, and I still have the front yard to work on, I got a lot of old bushes and grasses cleared away or trimmed down. I think this is what I have been most excited for about owning a house. I hope this enthusiasm stays all summer. Oh, I also got to walk down to the Des Moines river today. It's only a few blocks from our house, so now we just have to figure out fishing laws in town.
Mom and Dad are on their way to Minn. (will stay with Scott and Emily tonight) and will fly to N.Y. tomorrow...we have Curly Girl back (we like her!) Joe3 put something besides saline onto his contact lenses and had to go to the Dr.and miss a whole day of work...I heard it really hurt!!
That story was on KLGA...but, like, after the news about a sweater found on McGregor road...they mumbled the guys last name (is he related to Chuck Shockley?)They did say that Steve Kollasch had been working on it for a month.
Poor Joe3! I know someone (who will remain nameless) that used Prep-H instead of toothpaste once! Nooooooooooooooo, it wasn't me...ha! Hope Joe feels better soon!
I read that they were in trouble a while ago. Our GG mall is half empty and all the anchors except Dillards are gone. Well, Sears is still there, but Sears is walking wounded too. The Target store is actually literally boarded up. Looks real attractive.
I sure enjoy seeing all the b-day pictures. I can't believe how much all the grandchildren are growing. I saw Joe's eyes both yesterday and today, and he's doing much better today. I had some of that Clean and Clear solution around the house and I threw it all out yesterday.
Thanks to everyone in the Straub family for all your cards, calls, and flowers when my mother passed away in February from complications of lung cancer. A special thank you to Joe and Mary for having a Mass celebrated in her memory at Notre Dame. She had enjoyed really good health for the most part until last summer, and she went through chemo/radiation with a really upbeat attitude. I miss her very much. We inherited her two year old chihuahua, and he is a great little dog. He has adjusted well to the cats and life in Iowa. My neighbor does daycare and the little kids there call him the chicka-chicka-wow-wow.
As Mary said, the new coffee shop is really cool. When they open the martini bar at night, it will be an awesome place to have a quiet drink in the evening. Except for the manager, however, the staff is incredibly dull. They spend a lot of time at the register trying to figure out how to charge things. I went in on Saturday for an americano--shots of expresso in hot water. Very simple. The young girl working didn't know what an americano was and asked me instead of asking a coworker. Plus, it was in big letters on the menu on the wall behind her. Another lady who works in the front has absolutely no expression whatsoever when I go in. Totally flat affect and moves, as they would say on Star Trek, at impulse power. A lot of the success of the last coffee shop at the same location was due to the friendly, chatty owners and staff...and this place has none of that so far.
Again, thanks to everyone for your kindness when Mom passed. For many years my brothers and I didn't see each other or talk very often. We started writing last summer when Mom got sick, and we are all in frequent contact these days. My niece, who is 15 and lives in Oregon, is coming to Iowa this summer while my brother and his wife take a long overdue vacation. We're all planning a family vacation in the Grand Tetons next summer after mom's estate is settled. So something very positive came out of her illness and death for my family.
Kelli, it's really great that your family is "rediscovering" each other and staying in contact. Too bad Mom and Dad don't still have the farm - your niece could have helped with a hog roundup! They were very educational for some of the New York cousins!
First nice day in Chicago in a while. I'm headed to Florida Satuday for a few days (Greek Easter) with Jen's parents. Looking forward to 80s, long, boring days Gulfside and dinner at 5PM.
I'm using some soil pods for planting seeds, and the instructions say to "Please add 12 oz. of water." HA! It also describes the soil soaking up the water as "magical".
Obama just gave a speech at Georgetown Univ. The Whitehouse requested that the "IHS" symbol for Christ be covered up before he gave the speech so it wouldn't appear in any photos with the president.
Bad move. Looks like they may have managed to make more people angry than they would have alienated.
I understand WHY they did it. An image of The U.S. President pounding the pulpit with a crucifix behind him could potentially take us back two years in terms of our perception (as a country) to the people in the Middle East. And people wonder why it's so hard to keep the peace. How would you feel if we were forcibly governed by people who, for the most part, had drastically different beliefs?
It doesn't help that our previous President admittedly did what he did in the name of God. Whose God? If you live in Kandahar and neighbors died and you lost everything you own is it God's will? Not your God, that's for sure.
Conversely, if a family member died in 9/11 because those guys flying the plane said it was God's will, was it? No.
Eliminating religion from the discussion entirely is part of what needs to be done to get to peace. We need to be perceived as a secular nation that operates without prejudice.
But you'd think his staff would have just moved the pulpit or taken the ceremony to a different location.
Good points, Des. I was thinking I didn't blame them because they didn't want to conjure up the Messiah thing. Either way I still say the guy is a dink.
As far as his perception by other people and countries I understand his want for a make-over. But does go to far is dismissive and denigrating of all things America when he gives speeches on foreign soil. All of it for naught. The Europeans gave virtually nothing in the way of help for Afghanistan. They identify our fiscal policies and remedies as reckless. We got zero help from the Russians on Iran. And the same from the Chinese on North Korea.
And in his speeches he is an apologist for our treatment of Islam over the past 30 years conveniently forgetting Bosnia (a success wherein Europe stood by while we did the dirty work) and Somolia (a failure).
Obama was invited to Georgetown and he accepted. He came to their house and asked that they mask what drives their mission. They should not have covered it.
Once again the news becomes a huge debate about a little incident. This was a protocol issue that should not even have made the news cycle. I agree that Georgetown should have politely declined and offered to move his podium a little to the side or something if he wished. My point is, this tiny incident was seized upon by, hmmm, let me guess....,as further revelation of Obama's intrinsic evil. He won. Get over it. What was the speech about? Who was there? Did he say anything new about foreign policy or the economy or life issues? Oh, nobody knows. The story is all about Obama covering up Jesus.
I also doubt if he actually dismisses and denigrates all things American anywhere. He may go too far in being apologetic about our recent past, that's a matter of opinion that reasonable people can disagree about. But DID HE BOW DOWN BEFORE THE SULTAN????? Gimme a break. DID MICHELLE TAKE LIBERTIES WITH THE QUEEN????? Anyone remember W giving the chancellor of Germany a massagee?
Last night Cathy graciously babysat my children until 11 PM so that I could do my job. (Last night it was a big schmooze dinner)
I helped set up until 5:20 - then went back to my office to change. While crossing the parking lot (which is not easily visible from any of the streets nearby), I found a host of DEA agents putting on their vests and helmets, etc.
I found out this morning that the raid was 7 blocks southeast of Holy Name.
Cathy - I thought that whole bowing thing was a bunch of none sense. I don't have time to spell out that which I was referencing but if you follow this link...
Actually Charles K wrote a pretty good editorial there, although I don't think in saying in his inaugural address "to the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect," Obama is being especially apologetic or groveling. Chuck makes a good point about America defending Muslims when nobody else much was (although there were some British and Canadian and other casualties of those actions who would argue that point) but he also can't resist tossing in the actions of terrorists or extremists when he scoffs "the halcyon days" of American/Muslim relations, when those were not the policies of most Muslims we were dealing with. Face it, most politician, most of the time, find a way to say what a particular audience wants to hear while trying not to offend the folks back home. Obama said too much? Maybe. But I don't think he gave away the store. It's hard to write a column every day without picking apart meaningless stuff just to come up with some material.
An FYI about Joe IV's graduation party. It will be on Sunday, May 10th starting at 3pm at Sister Sarah's. His actual graduation is a week later. Mom and Dad fly back into Mpls tomorrow at 6:30 and I'm pretty sure they'll spend the night here and return to Whittemore Wed.
And last but not least - Happy Birthdays to all the beautiful April-born ladies. Grace, Catie and Ellen.
Dad said that he Deaconed at Marty's funeral Mass and then Dad performed the graveside ceremony...He said that Uncle Don had just taken Caroline to the E.R. for severe stomach pains...but, I've not talked to him since then (Sunday).

Algona made the World-Herald today. Some guy from Wesley tried to get an undercover officer to kill his wife?
Dad always said those Wesley people were up to no good.
They do have good broasted chicken, worth killing for!
Happy Birthday Grace...you're pretty slick!
Happy Birthday Catie...you're a great young ladie!

The World Herald scooped KLGA. But that's nothing new.
Happy Birthday, Ladies. Hope it's an awesomerest birthday ever.

Whoops, too late for that. Ellen you should be glad to know I'm re-using the tiny bamboo pots for seedlings, they're so cute!

Hi everyone..
An FYI about Joe IV's graduation party. It will be on Sunday, May 10th starting at 3pm at Sister Sarah's. His actual graduation is a week later. Invitations will be sent out soon, but I thought I'd mention the date here. If any of you remember Karen, Joe's godmother, she and her family are planning to be here from Indiana. She came out for the Wolf Tones Algona concert a few years ago and had a blast with everyone.
Kelli
A family get-together and I don't need to travel...hooray...Tom can just come out of the kitchen at Sarah's (from Mother's Day brunch) and relax...hooray...Betty and the Boys don't have to travel...now I know why they picked Sarah's...I was trying to put up a huge rental tent 2 hours before Caitlin's graduation party...I had to beg the rental people to come back and put it up (Mike and Des were out schlepping other stuff, plus food) It was a great party..
People lingered as they fingered
the food and the wine
under a tent, as they dined
Three years ago next May

p

Ellen has a graduation party on May 30th in the afternoon until as late as it needs to be.
All are welcome to come to both.
Monica
I'm having a party May 15 and none of you are invited.
So what did Grace do to celebrate?
p
Went to the Dr. again yesterday and have new pictures of the thumb. It is turning black.
That's AWESOME.
post the pics!
What did the Doctor say?
I lost the cord that connects my phone to my computer so I can't post them here. I can send them to your phone if you want.
The Dr. said that everything looked good, but he wanted to keep the thumb in a splint for another week so I still have the giant Fred Flinstone thumb. I was a little worried because when I got the bandage off (besides the thumb being all black) I couldn't bend my thumb at the knuckle. The Dr. said that that was normal though since it had been immobilized for so long.
I go in for new x-rays a week from Thurs. Then we will know how those bones are doing.
When do Mom and Dad return? Are they back already?
Ed, send me the thumb pics and I'll post them for all to see. 712-310-7594
Ed sent me the thumb pics and they were pretty cool.

And last but not least - Happy Birthdays to all the beautiful April-born ladies. Grace, Catie and Ellen.
Just another manic monday.
Dad said that he Deaconed at Marty's funeral Mass and then Dad performed the graveside ceremony...He said that Uncle Don had just taken Caroline to the E.R. for severe stomach pains...but, I've not talked to him since then (Sunday).
It's a really cold blustery day...yuck!!!
Ed you should read "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" about a girl born with giant thumbs who fulfills her destiny as a hitchiker. Very 80's (or 70's) book but written by a man in case you think it sounds too girly. Tom Wolfe is the author, I think.
It's VERY windy here but sunny and high 50s. I had a meeting in atlantic today and coming back all the semis were being blown sideways on to the shoulder.
Tom Robbins. I read it at Mary's apartment when I was about 13 and was quite disturbed at the time.
p
Yes...I had that book...when did I live in an apartment? Oh, Sioux Falls, 1982...
I can almost guarantee that Ed has read that book.
Yes, Tom Robbins who also wrote Stilllife with Woodpecker and Even Gowgirls get the Blues. Very funny.
I meant Skinny Legs and All in addition to the other books already mentioned.
Pat, were you disturbed while 13 years of age or while reading the Tom Robbins book?
Any news on Caroline Zilinski?
