Thanksgiving was wonderful, thank you Monica and Joe. Very classy and comfy. I must have been in one of the 4-5 bathrooms when the photos were snapped.
A tip for late night drinkers..Black Velvet poured into a Bushmills bottle tastes really good enough to sip...remarkable, plus a coupon makes it even better!

That was a goooood dinner. Monica made most of it (with Phelan as sous-chef) and everything looked beautiful, especially all the kids with rosy cheeks from playing outside.

kevin was a little whiny though.

Kudos to Cathy and Stevo for the morning after breakfast!

Nance, a Dyson? I'm jealous. As Lisa can attest the tube on mine falls out all the time.

Thank you to everyone who helped with dinner and breakfast. It was a huge help.

It was fun having everyone.

Happy belated birthday to Nance and Joe 4. I"m jealous of the dyson too. How could Christmas possibly top that? What did Joe 4 get?

The Thanksgiving pictures look like I missed out on a good time. Plus, I really want to see Monica's house.

Just a suggestion...Before Weis meets with the A.D. (which I think is on Monday) can we get a poll asking whether or not he should be fired?

This might apply mostly to people who have applied for assistance from Catholic Charities but anyway:

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Des Moines is joining Catholic Charities USA in warning people of fraudulent e-mail that misappropriates the name of Catholic Charities. The fraudulent e-mail asks the recipient for personal information such as a phone number and e-mail address.

Anyone who has applied for a grant through Catholic Charities – including flood victims – should know that recipients are notified by the U.S. Postal Service and not by e-mail, said Nancy Galeazzi, executive director of Catholic Charities serving central and southwest Iowa.

Gotta pay those coaches!

I just read that despite opinion on the Straub blog poll, Weis will return next year.

Anonymous said...

Weis should go. 9-15 the last 2 years is unacceptable. He's had his chance.

Mary - most of the really high paid coaches are men's football and basketball coaches at competitive schools. The programs they oversee are a cash cow to the universities because of the success. So on a ledger the cost of an expensive, yet successful coach is a positive cash flow scenario for the institution. In fact, these programs make possible the less well attended athletic competitions.

I know...it just get people blogging!...I agree Weis should go, I didn't know he wasn't hangin with the "powers that be" at ND, what an ego! Big Mistake...makes Fr. Jenkins job a bit easier (Fr. Jenkins bro and I are friends from Omaha)...Jenkins brought Weis in, I'm not sure why the AD didn't...it will be messy cause of the charity for autistic kids (didn't hear as much this year about it, tho) he moved the headquarters to South Bend...plus he built a HUGE house with a paddock, etc....maybe he'll just stay in South Bend...haha

I just talked to Mom and Dad...he's going for it...I mean, he's driving from Chattanooga to Jupiter, all today, he said he just crossed into Florida and still feels like driving (it's along way still to Jupiter)...they didn't have dinner and drinks untill after 9 last night.

That's pretty good - he still has 4 or 5 hours to go.

I am still employed. The Register laid off 41 people yesterday and today. Thankfully, Brianne and I were not among them. There were also 15 open positions that won't be filled now. 11 people are gone from the newsroom, including cartoonist Brian Duffy, who until now made The Register one of very few papers in the country that ran an editorial cartoon on the front page. That seems to be the only thing readers are upset about. These were a few very scary days, and I consider myself lucky.

Whew. That's good news for you and Brianne. I'm glad it's turned out well for you. Does that mean you'll be working more?

Thanks to Monica and Joe for working sooo hard to keep us comfy and well fed. I think Monica did nothing but put food on platters, put food away, wash dishes, put food on platters, etc. for two days straight.

The Thanksgiving dinner was awesome. I want Erin's recipe for the chocolate raspberry torte.

Thanks also to the Jayjacks for making sure we had plenty to eat the next morning.

Ed, I did not bring a red velvet cake, but promise to at Christmas.

We may be a day late for Christmas this year... what is eveyone else's plan?

Pat, when do you start? And what will you actually be doing?

I'm So-o-o-o glad Joe and Brianne still have their jobs. Start saving every payday, everyone. It's too bad about all the jobs at the Register - hard to know how they could get any leaner.

That was me.

I will be answering the phone and mailing stuff and making copies of stuff. And hopefully learning more about art. And having a secret entrance to an outdoor amphitheater, through the sculpture garden, so I can get in to concerts for free.

Joe J...Congrats...how many people work at the REGISTER? (not including distribution, etc)

The Register had 801 full-time employees before the cuts.

So yesterday the bank laid off a bunch of people and then today they laid off more people in my group. In the group I am in they laid off 9 out of 59 people.

I (thankfully) was not one of those 9.

Scary!! In Algona SNAP ON is ending their 2nd shift (3rd already gone) and Universal let 4 people go.

Isn't it weird how a couple of days ago, some economic group finally made it official: we are in a recession and have been since summer 2007 - and the stock market plunged. Like everybody didn't already know it. The stock market is insane and bipolar and should be hospitalized. We (our family)have mostly been pretty lucky so far.

Hello to all from sunny Florida,

Congrats to Ed, Joe J. and Brianne for surviving and to Pat for her new job. Pat, I tried calling you this morning but I don't think I have your latest cell phone number.

As you know, we were in Cedar Rapids when Tom called last Wednesday to let me know that Vern Muller had died. Tom happened to run into Vern's nephew, Dan in HyVee and Dan told him they had been trying to reach me at home. Tom handed Dan his mobile and Dan told me the funeral was Saturday so we decided to return to Whittemore from Cedar Rapids. Then about an hour later Tom called again to tell me that Clyde Dahlhauser had been killed and his widow, Kim was trying to reach me. I called her and learned that his funeral was Monday so we stayed for that as well.

After the funeral lunch we went home and changed into our travelling clothes and were on the road by 2:00 PM. We travelled 300 miles on Monday to a little town, Donnellson, which is about 10 miles north of the Missouri line. We stayed in the Avenue of the Saints motel, an old fashioned Mom and Pop place. No restaurant in town so we had a Casey's sandwich for dinner.

The next day we were in 6 states: Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and back into Tennessee (a geographical oddity) and stayed in Chattenooga overnight. We had travelled about 625 miles that day.

Then yesterday we drove to Jupiter. The total trip was 1625 miles but there was a detour around an interstate near St. Louis so I think the trip is normally about 1600 miles.

We got to Jupiter about 9:00 PM and had not eaten so we got a couple of slices of pizza at a local Italian eatery and then went to the grocery store for essentials.

It wasn't a bad trip but I'm glad we are flying home for Christmas. Gas was only $1.54 in Tennessee and north Georgia. It's about $1.80 here.

Love, Mom and Dad

I'm glad you got there safely. That's a lot of driving for 2 1/2 days. I don't think you can do that if you're a trucker.

Pat, when do you start your job? Are you full or part time?

MOnica

Anonymous said...

Mom and Dad, you must be tired. I just tried to call and it was busy so you must be online - or you took the phone off the hook to nap!

I am so glad no one has lost their jobs yet. Really scary times. The number of people on food stapms is at an all-time high. When the weather turned, the shelters up here filled up faster than ever. The foodbanks are on every news and local talk show appealing for donations. Cathy's right. We all have been lucky so far. Let's hope our luck continues.

Why the hell is Congress dragging its feet on the big 3 bailout? Can't they see what 3 million people losing their jobs would do? It seems ridiculous to bailout the banks and not save the blue collar jobs.

On the bright side, I filled the tank yesterday for 1.64/G. It makes such a big difference.

Anonymous said...

Congress is just huffing and puffing because so many constituents are mad about the previous bailouts. They know they'll have to do something.

Mom and Dad, you guys are crazy! I'm glad you're flying back too. You'll barely be recovered from your trip down there. How's the weather? Is it beachworthy?

Anonymous said...

I do think it's good they're grilling them "the 3"...they have to stop making Hummers and start being more green and stop excessive bonuses and the Unions need a little shaking up, too...they should have done this to the big banks though...
Also...the auto industry must not employ ANY women, do you see any in the room??

Anonymous said...

On the big three - if the top 25 executives of each company would take a 50% pay cut, it would probably equal all the cuts the unions are going to have to agree to. And they would still make millions. How much money do they need?

Anonymous said...

The poor guy from Chrysler just wants to get married to a rich girl!

Anonymous said...

And what's up with the Treasury Dept doing the bait and switch with the financial institutions bailout? Does anyone know what they're doing with the 700B?

You know if the gov't split the 700B among all Americans over the age of 18, we could all pay off our mortgages, pay our credit cards, go buy a new American car. Problem solved!

Anonymous said...

I heard the head of Ford agreed to get only 1 dollar for the year. I hope that is true. It would set a great example to so many other companies.

I also heard that the interest rates for hoe buyers, not people refinancing, is going down to 4.5%. That may help the housing industry a little but I don't know how much if everyone is afraid of getting fired.

Can this bailout come out of the $700B? The guys who are talking oh-so-reasonably about "restructuring" (bankruptcy) are ignoring the fact that the first group to not get paid will be the workers. I don't know if it can be legally done, but any bailout money should be pretty closely tied to cutbacks in upper-management and executive pay, not just the union workers.

Anonymous said...

It was also stupid to hand out billions to the banks with no strings attached, although theoretically in the long run the government is supposed to profit. Individuals aren't allowed to borrow money for one purpose (say a mortgage or business loan) and just sit on the cash instead.

In additional coaching news Gene Chizak has pulled the tried and usually untrue shake up of his staff. He has demoted both coordinators and brought in new guys. This is usually a last gasp attempt by a head coach to save his job.

Recruiting like crazy, I hope.

Anonymous said...

Weis doesn't need to recruit any harder than he is. He needs to coach harder than he is. The teams he has put on the field are not the "nasty, hard hitting" teams he said he would have. They are disorganized kids playing not to lose. Forget winning or losing. Just go knock someone into next week. The rest will take care of itself.

Tom

REgarding the big three. They are missing the message if they think that just creating a greener car is where they need to set their sights. They also need to focus more on affordable cars that do not have a 8-9 year planned obscolesence. Did I even come close to spelling that right?

The heads of the big three are setting good examples with thier "I'll work for a $1 next year," offer - but they also have to promise to look at all upper management salaries. By the way, they are not in this bind only because of fallout from the lending crunch... they truly created some of this problem themselves with crazy salaries, an inability to judge what America wants and (beyond that) needs... maybe the loan should be given with a promise that all top execs go retire on their millions.

Unfortunately, I do believe that letting them fail could be a catastrophe.

Hello,

I know it was a quick trip down here and we did pass some historic sites, such as Lookout Mountain, where I think a Civil War battle was waged, but we lost 4/5 days because of the funerals and we wanted to get to Jupiter as soon as possible. Also, it was 26 degrees when we drove past Lookout mountain.

It got up to 75 today and I went to the pool while Mom took a nap. Tonight we had dinner at the Cobblestone Cafe. Mom had ravioli stuffed with mushrooms and I had macadamia encrusted sole. Then we went to McCarthy's, a restaurant we really like just to see what was going on. To our surprise and delight a guy named Noel Kingston was playing. He's not quite as good as our favorite, Jimmy Byrne, but he is very good. We had a very enjoyable evening. Hopefully we can get together with Pat and Josh next week or next weekend. We are happy that she got the job.

Josh's brother and girlfriend are visiting us this weekend. We've been out and about. Yesterday we went to Little Havana (which was smaller than I expected) and then drove through Miami Beach. Today we are going to watch/bet on jai alai. I've never been, so it should be fun.

Hi,
We met Pat and Josh for lunch at Dave's Last Resort in Lake Worth. We got home about 2pm and although the temp was about 78 we just did not feel motivated to go to the beach or the pool. We napped in late afternoon then got up in time to catch the early bird special at Pasquale's in Tequesta which is very close to Ocean Parks. We came home, watched tv for a while and now we are getting ready for bed. Julianna, the 85 year old lady who lives above us, asked if we would drive her to Mass tomorrow. She said she has been getting a ride with some 90 year old lady who's driving scares Julianna. So I'd better set the alarm.
Love, Mom and Dad

So we went to jai alai and it was pretty fun. Some bettors yell at the players pretty bad. Like, "you suck!" or "go home number 3" My brother in law's girlfriend made two bets of $6 each and won both times, for a total of $419.

While here at work getting ready for a small catering job I had "Little House On The Prairie" on the TV.

Worst television episode of all time. Laura and some young boy were out in the wilderness playing "Indians" and were dressed as such. They were mistaken for real Indians by some renegades and taken back to the village. In fact, the boy was mistaken as the son of "Running Bull".

The boy would uphold the charade by grunting "Ugh" to all inquiries made of him by the witless savages. Somehow, while I was stirring the spinach and artichoke dip Laura and the boy made the escape and I turned the corner to see them barreling down a desert road (deserts in Minnesota?) in a covered wagon being chased by the the whole of the Warrior Nation on horseback.

Laura staved them off by tossing barrels of black powder out the back of the wagon and then, exercising incredible marksmanship, she would blow the blood thirsty killers off their horses by shooting the barrels. BOOM! She never missed.

If I were and Indian I would demand that episode be burned and never aired again.
