Many thanks for the birthday greetings. While I was reading Emily's post about Charlie Wilson's War, I could not help but think of the advice George Washing gave in his farewell address, to avoid foreign entanglements. We made a mistake in Afghanistan trying to remake that country into a western style democracy and then we repeated the mistake in Pakistan and Iraq. People in foreign countries have to make those decisions for themselves. It is much different from stopping a dictator like Hitler who poses a real threat to your nation and perhaps there are times when humanitarian idealism requires intervention in some poor nation like Uganda, Bosnia or Sudan. But we have no more right to impose our system on Iraq than we would have imposing it on Venezuela. Beware of foreign entanglements. Those are my words of wisdom for today. Love, Dad

Happy Birthday Dad.

HI Dad! Happy Birthday. Sorry I didn't call. Time slipped away from me and with the time difference it got too late. I'm sure you enjoyed the ND victory over UCONN.

Anonymous said...

So, what did you all think of the debate last night? I liked Bill Richardson, but he repeated himself too much. John Edwards bothered me, though at times he was the most passionate. I thought Hilary was the smartest. Barack was good, but didn't stand out. I would find it acceptable with any of them as the nominee, really.

Happy Birthday Grandpa and Bon Voyage to you both! We had a nice party at Sarah's last night w/ Grandpa & Grandma, Joe3 and Mike. We gave him a cabana shirt in *hopes* of warm days. Joe3 gave him a lightweight jacket needed for cool nights as Pat has been reporting and golf balls that promise an amazing game! Oh and Granny gave him a very cool Bears golf shirt...we wouldn't want him to start routing for the Jupiter Warriors! Have fun, enjoy awesome seafood and we'll see you soon! :-)

Hey, does anyone know what the price of the stock weas on the day that Mom and Dad gave it to us? I just want so I won't have to spend hours trying to figure it out in 2 years.

Anonymous said...

I meant 20 years not two. I have no plans for it. I know it was in the mid 40's.

you can always look on wyeths website and find that info.

Aren't we all going to need the prince of Wyeth on x-mas in order to declare it on our taxes?

So does anybody have it?

Anonymous said...

I don't think yah gotta declare it on your taxes...if you don't cash it in. Do yah?

Anonymous said...

Ok you are right, however, when you sell the stock the basis is the price at which Dad and Mom received the stock at, not the price of the stock on the day we received it. So we dont' really need the price of the stock at Christmas at all.

So we need the price that Mom got it at. I think Dad mentioned something about getting that to us.

Anonymous said...

It's my understanding that you are taxed at the time of cashing it in and it's all figured out for you by the powers that be that issue you the check and then, you have that information to share with your accountant when she/he prepares your taxes. I think. :-)

Last night the long-time boyfriend of Brian's mom Patti died suddenly. He was a nice guy. Patti was concerned because she hadn't heard from him all day and he didn't show up for a family holiday dinner so she went over to his house and found him. He had Christmas cards for Brian and Molly and for Brian's brother Jay in his hand. Sad.

Wow.

I feel bad for Patti...he was a real gentleman...we were just talking about them at dinner last night...
about that dinner...Lisa and Randy hosted a birthday/goodbye party for Dad and Mom last night...the lamb was delicious (as was all the food!) and their house is very cool, congratulations!

I went down Sat. and had dinner with Caitlin, and Mike drove Mom and Dad down yesterday...they are on the plane right now!

Grace, and everyone, thanks for thinking of us. We're all still shocked. Catie seems unmoved yet curious, and Mia has no idea what's going on. Bill was a huge part of Patty's life, and her obvious best friend. We're very sad for her and will miss him too.
There will be a private visitation on Saturday, then his ashes will be buried in Massechusettes (sp?) with his mother.

Saint Theresa's Prayer:
May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones,
and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

I was watching the cable news shows this AM and got sucked into a real P O S called the Glenn Beck Show that was just awful. Here, the day after Hillary rebounds, he's saying we can't have a crybaby for president. Did anyone see her cry? Talk about overblown. On a cynical note, remember when Romney got a big polling bump about 3 weeks ago when he got misty-eyed on camera a few weeks ago?

Anonymous said...

Here's an idea for a business:
Get a hypnotist and, for $50 or so, offer to hypnotize people into thinking they're having a great time. A few hours later the hypnotist will wake you up and you'll have great fake memories.

Anonymous said...

Steely-eyed Joe Biden never cried.

Anonymous said...

She didn't even cry. She just got all teary-eyed and started blubbering about how politics gets in the way of the political process. I guess this won her the female vote in NH as all the women saw this an felt sorry for her and decided to vote for her.

I wonder if we are going to have a complete meltdown before Super Tuesday.

As you can tell - I have no love for the dragon lady.

Anonymous said...

One exception - Mom (Hi, Mom...it's Tom)

Anonymous said...

Women polled as less sympathetic to Hillary's brief teary-eyed moment than men did. That's because women realize that tears are a totally natural reaction to stress and probably the reason women live longer than men. So the women weren't impressed either way by Hillary's moist eyes, while the men reacted with fear, hostility or misplaced sympathy. I don't really like Hillary, but I thought it was a natural moment and had no bearing on her strength, intelligence or smarts. She was disappointed, shocked and exhausted by the Iowa caucuses.

I just heard a funny story on NPR about some Irish bookies who were taking bets on the outcome of the whole primary season and, based on the reports after Iowa, just paid off some bettors who bet on Obama to take the whole thing. Boy, do they feel stupid. Although, that's who is going to win anyway, so no harm done.

Catie told me that when Brian told her about Bill, she felt numb but her legs were shaking.

Anonymous said...

I think it's degrading to think that people are willing to say that just because Hillary got just a bit of haze in her eyes women were willing to vote for her. Degrading to Hillary, degrading to all women. Degrading to those who think it.

OK, I'm off to lead people to Jesus. Jesus wept, you know.

Anonymous said...

When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer.

But then, he was kind of a fancy-lad, and you know how emotional they get.

Anonymous said...

So did Mitt.

I still think the tears were planned...Hillary's (and maybe Jesus).

m.e.

Anonymous said...

"TEARS FOR FEARS" I just checked out their website...they look macho enough...what are they crying about? I mean they should just phone Dr.Phil!

scratch that, the name of the band will be DegraNation. awesome. now i just have to learn to play an instrument.

Anonymous said...

Joe Biden did get teary eyed when talking about flying back from Iraq with dead marines on board. I don't think Hillary's tears were fake, I think she was just really tired.

Anonymous said...

Regarding Ms. Rodham, "The moment we moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls."

Anonymous said...

Oh Liz, you know she's just a wacko and can cry on demand just like Slick Willie.

Anonymous said...

I think Hillary does pay close attention to polls and critically structures almost every word that comes from her mouth to sound intelligent and forceful, but I also think that is just in her nature. I am sure she has always been like that, and I know we all know people like that, too. They think a lot before they say something, and are very serious when they say it. The misty eyes weren't scripted though, that's jsut stupid. And with a woman like Hillary, you can probably bet she would be pretty embarrassed to cry or show that much emotion in public if she thought it made her look weak. It was a pure moment and real emotions she's showing as she becomes more comfortable (and tired) campaigning.

Mom, check your email please :)

Tomorrow our baby boy (Eli) is going, on a school field trip, to Okoboji at the Bridge Bay Resort Water Park...or, something like that. He'll leave at 8:30am and return at 3pm...on a school bus. Of course, there will be chaperones...but, he and all the other children will be left to run about...all day. We're sending him with $15 in a ziplock baggie, 3 bottles-o-Gatorade, plastic bag for wet clothes, change of clothes, cool swim trunks and a beach towel. Check, ckeck, check...I'm nervous. Bus. Water Park. Running amuck. Will he have fun w/ friends? Will he be safe? Will he miss the bus? Will he forget to go potty before they leave the resort? Sigh.
I'm certain that we could fast forward two years and when Liam goes...I'll be cool...I hope.
Hmm...this parenting gig can be weird.

Hey-that's the field trip I'm going on in 15 minutes! Hope it's fun. I'll prolly have to take $5 of Eli's money for protection. I've gotta lotta mazagines to read and also packed some work (ugh). I wonder what the lifeguards look like at an indoor water park in January?
Nancy, you forgot the, oh well, too late now anyway.

This may not be interesting...thought I would share...feel free to continue on to the next posting.
Update on my Mom:
My mother takes many meds/day for her diabetes, arthritis, cholestrol, blood pressure, fibromalaysia, thyroid...more? Anywhoot twice a day she takes a med called glyberide. Last night, while she was taking inventory of all her meds...she discovered that she hadn't been taking her glyberide for quite a while and unsure for how long. She phoned her internist, this morning, and they cancelled the catscan (sp?) and said they should wait a few weeks to see if that was the cause for her sugar numbers, suddenly, going crazy-high. My Mom takes 7 oral diabetic meds/day in addition to her insulin once a day.
Sounds like my Mom's a wreck! Actually, she's quite healthy in many ways. Healthy weight. Never been a big drinker. Quit smoking 20 years ago. Takes two-2 mile walks/day. Maintains a high activity level. She takes very good care of herself and cannot believe that she has missed this med...oh well, not again I am sure. :-)

Anonymous said...

Well, that is the best possible diagnosis. Good, good.
P

Anonymous said...

Oh yes! I am so relieved and hopeful that this is, truly, the cause. Thank you, all, for your prayers and concern...I really appreciate it. :-)

Mia and Jude will be 3 on Febraury 17 and 18. So I guess we'll have to wait a while to see that cake.
