OOOOOH! What famous people were born on this day?

Nance...I think the change in the baggie is a good idea too.

Between the gum and the mucus plug I think I'm gonna be sick.

Hey Des, did you get all cleansed? Do you feel better? Would you do it again or maybe just have a colonic?

Or those detox pads they sell on TV. You just stick em on the bottoms of your feetsies when you go to bed and in the morning you peel em off and they're BLACK with TOXINZ they capillaried right oughta yer body.
I got a mucus pug because I left the dog out a little too long last nite an' he's gotta cold.
Say what you want about the Nazis-they had a sense of style- tailored unis, stylistic eagles and Romanesque symbols, bldgs. Too bad they were so nasty cause it'd be interesting to see where they would have gone with all that stuff. Of course, they'd have the biggest of everything.

Best line from the GOP debate last night (which was pretty boring)was from Romney. When asked about the prospect of going head to head with Hillary in the general election he said,

"I can't stand the thought of Bill Clinton in the White House with nothing to do."

any news on Emily?

Re: Emily. I am anxiously awaiting my opportunity to update the Birthday/Anniversary List and send it out. Anyone heard from her, Scott or Phelan?

We spoke to Emily last night. Could not speak too long because they were on the way out the door when we called. Emily said she is feeling good and saw the doctor yesterday but no predictions about when. Mom & Dad

What do you all think about this bill that's being passed? I'm happy to collect the money, but do you think it really does anything?

Last Saturday, someone went #2 in the ladies' room sanitary waste basket. Renee was perplexed by the odor that wouldn't go away. She cleaned and bleached...until she finally discovered it on Tuesday.

Re: Mr. Stillman fund raiser.
We raised $2300 in bills and checks and have 4 big bags of change to bring to the bank and have counted.

Anonymous said...

I was about to say that my experience is that change in a baggie means lots of counting pennies, dimes, etc. by the bookkeeper. (She used to have a few days of counting ahead of her when the operation rice bowl boxes came back) Glad to know that they are taking it to the bank to be sorted.

Any news from Phelan and her tiny, pregnant aunt?

Anonymous said...

That bill will get some people out spending money they wouldn't be able to spend otherwise, but it doesn't address the problems of the sub-prime mortgage crisis or the debt that's being bought up overseas. It might give the economy a little shot of juice. I myself am thinking....living room rug. Definitely not thinking paying credit cards or anything prudent like that. And anyway, the patriotic thing to do with that money is buy, buy, buy! They don't want you to save it, they want you to spend it! Do your part!
I can preload my rice bowl because I have a big cookie jar on the counter full of change. We don't buy or make cookies, so there it sits, collecting pennies, nickels and dimes (I keep the quarters) I have to wait till the end of Lent to convert it to dollars, though, or I'll spend them in a pinch.

Sappy kid story - skip it if you don't want to read it
Three nights ago Ty told me his teddy bear, Choc (short for Chocolate)wanted to sleep with me so we could snuggle. I said okay, set the bear down in the kitchen, and promptly forgot about it. The next morning Ty discovered Choc in the kitchen and berated me for leaving Choc alone in the dark ALL NIGHT LONG. Being an expert exploiter of guilt, Ty then told me the next day was Choc's birthday. So I agreed to bake a birthday cake for Choc. Coincidentally, yesterday was also Jackie's birthday, or so I was informed. Jackie is one of Braden's 500 teddy bears. The birthday party was lots of fun. Choc even got presents. Zane let me know that his bear's birthday is coming up next Thursday.
What else is there to do in January in below-freezing temps?

Anonymous said...

Happy Birthday Jackie 'n Choc-o-lat
It's my birthday tomorrow...you forgot!!
I'm just kidding...I do that a-lot
So, blow out the candles and say goodnight,
Let Gracie Mom grab teddy Choc and bed down tight.

Cathy...buy a rug! Just like the republicans to think they can toss some change out and quiet the clan...it's crap, but let's get a rug out of the deal...the Dems will win anyway!

m.e.

Anonymous said...

Grace~ Cute story! :-)

Anonymous said...

Mary, you should be aware that the democrats are just as eager to buy votes as the republicans with this scheme. In fact many of them are saying the give away isn't enough. That we should give away more.

The one republican who I heard raise a concern about this was Huckabee. He says "So we are going to borrow a pile of money from the Chinese so our citizens can go out and buy a bunch of goods manufactured in China? I wonder who's economy is going to be stimulated by all this. What we should be doing is spending money on our infrastructure. It will pay American citizens using American raw goods. We have bridges and roads that need upgrading. Borrowing money so we can all buy new gadgets is not a good idea."

I agree with him on this one.

Tom

I heart Huckabee on this one, too.

Hello everybody! I have not been on the blog since before Christmas.

Boy, have I missed alot.

Happy belated Birthdays to:
Frank, Deb, Joe II (we enjoyed sharing a great birthday meal with you at the Milbraths), and Nicholas Otto (thank you Nick for the nice shirt you sent me for Christmas, I really like it).

Mely, we continue to hope and pray for a cure for whatever is causing your headaches and hope you are feeling better.

Happy belated anniversary Pete and Mely!

Nanc, we remember your Mom in our prayers and are glad to hear she is feeling better.

Nanc, I was a member of the United Steelworkers Union for nine years and still have contacts there. If you give me the name of the fellow that was so rude to you on the phone, I'll pass it on to my friends in East Chicago and they will have a little "chat" with him.

Caitlin, I didn't know that you were sick and hope you are feeling better now.

Em, I hope that you and baby Straub/Guilliatt are doing well and can't wait to welcome him into the world.

Grace, I forgot to tell you, my other birthday is at the end of January and I like Choc cake too.

Cathy, I'm shocked that you would refer to our van that way. That van is like a member of our family.

Tom, I too liked Joe Biden and might have voted for him if I could vote for a Democrat. Too bad he is out.

Speaking of politics, in honor of today's South Carolina Democratic primary, I have a few observations about what has been going on the last month:

A WEARY BUT SAVY AND SMART CROCKADILE
FAILING TO GARNER SUPPORT WITH A SMILE
GAVE IN TO THE FEARS OF MANIPULTIVE PEERS
AND LET SLIP A GLIMPSE OF EMOTION AND TEARS.
WHETHER OR NOT A PLOY STAGED FOR GAIN
HARD TO CONDEM, ALLS FAIR IN CAMPAIGN.
ONE CAN'T HELP BUT PONDER,
SPONTANIOUS OR FEIGHNED?
AND FROM WHENCE I WONDER
THE PROMPT QUESTION CAME?

COMES NOW HER MATE, A WILEY REPTILE
ATTEMPTING TO TAINT STATUS QUO WITH HIS STYLE
CREATING COMPLAINT, INDECISION AND DOUBT
TOWARDS THE LEADING CONTENDER WITH WORDS TAKEN OUT
OF CONTEXT AND CONCEPT, INTENT REARRANGED
TO ALTER THE MESSEGE OF FROM WHOM IT CAME.
MANUFACTURING ISSUES
OF GENDER AND RACE
ANYTHING GOES
TO CAPTURE FIRST PLACE.

NEEDING CONCLUSION,
TRUTH AND RESTRAINT.
WANTING SOLUTION,
NOT PETTY COMPLAINT.
WE'RE WEARY OF WATCHING OUR CANDIDATES SPAR
AND CONCERNED ABOUT ISSUES LIKE: ENDING THE WAR,
GLOBAL RELATIONS, DOMESTIC AFFAIRS,
ECONOMY, EQUALITY, AND BETTER HEALTH CARE.
SECURING THE FUTURE FOR OURSELVES AND OUR HIERS
IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN WHO SAID WHAT WHERE.

Does anyone have a TI 83/84 graphing calculator laying around they'll sell me cheap? I'll even give it back after this semester since it's such an indispensable tool after college algebra and statistics are out of the way...

so what's the word on Emily? anyone?

Anonymous said...

Stevo

That poem was amazing.

It would have taken me days to come up with that. Perhaps it would have been a better way for me to spend my sick days at home with the girls than what I did do: Sleep.

We are all still a bit sick. Emma still has a fever and Randy seems to be coming down with this, too. Beware the 6 day flu.

I am feeling well enough to be fixing pork chops for dinner tonite rather than chicken soup! Hope everyone else can eat it!

Thanks for all the nice comments. I got some legos, a nerf gun, a transformer, an airhogs airplane, a dartboard, a skateboard and some other stuff. I got to eat at the mongialian grill on my birthday. I had my party at Pump it Up. All of my friends were invited.

Anonymous said...

Oooh, Stevo, I got goose bumps. We saw a pale Lisa at Mass today all alone. I was over at their house yesterday for a while and Mary was asleep the whole time and Emma appeared briefly but then went to lie down on the couch - with no TV on or anything. I hope they can go to school tomorrow; they missed a whole week so far (as did Lisa)
Our color-changing rug is down in the dining room and tonight it's green but this morning it was baby blue.
Tom, they should offer the option to fund infrastructure repairs out of our rebates like this: after I buy a nice living room rug, I would be glad to help pay for a beam or some cement if my name was on it for everyone to admire. Americans could have their names up on bridges and in highways all over the country, just like they do with school or park fundraisers, with brick walks with people's names on them. Or if you paid for someone's labor they could get a tattoo of your name, or the engineers could have names all over their hardhats...

Anonymous said...

Lisa you need to fix the girls a steak and they'll eat it bloody, to build up their blood. (Obscure reference to "moonstruck")

We saw "The Bucket List" Friday night. Predictable, nice, fun, it's always fun to watch the pros do what they do well. I can't believe No Country for Old Men and Michael Clayton and Sweeney Todd are gone from the local theaters already. Maybe they'll hit the $2 places soon.

I love the Mongolian Grill.

I would like the opportunity to like the Mongolian Grill. Is that the kind of place where you cook your food at the table as you eat it?

PS: Too soon for pork chops. I was the only one who ate all my dinner.

A question to all of you world travellers:
My Mom's doctor suggested that she receive a Hepatitus A vaccine (Mexico trip). Is that necessary for me? Or, was it suggested, to her, because her health is a bit compromised?

Speaking of the mid east. I just started reading The Kite Runner. Good so far. Easy to read.

Em, where is that baby?!? What is your due date? Go for a run. Break that water. All my boys were born within three hours of water breaking. Sean within 15 minutes.

Ohh, who went outside today in this beautiful weather? We took the dog for a long walk, he hadn't been outside for longer than 3 minutes in a like a month. THat's his choice though, our apartment owners never shovel and every square inch of the sidewalk has been covered in ice and deep snow. Hurts his little, spoiled paws.

What is everyone doing for the Super Bowl? We are having friends over and making meatballs and Italian sausage for sandwiches, and Andy's home brewed beer should be ready by Sunday. We tasted some tonight. It tastes just like New Castle.

Anonymous said...

I love your poem Stevo.

No baby news. They've scheduled me to induce on Feb 1, which is the day Phelan leaves so I really hope something happens in the next two days or else we're in a major lurch.

Anonymous said...

Phe could stay one extra day, couldn't she? It can't cost much to extend the ticket.

Emily, if Scott is home you could try the Italian induction.

For Super Bowl Sunday, Lisa, Molly and I are hosting a Mardi Gras dinner with Crawfish Dauphine, Pork Loin with Orange-Dijon glaze and grilled pineapple, Alligator Jambalaya, spicy salads and creme brulee (so I can use my new little torch, I'm so excited) and a TV in the dining room. Y'all come! I wish I could taste Andy's beer. Does anyone know of a Louisiana beer available in the midwest?

Anonymous said...

Mary and Mike invited us (Joe3 too) over. The boys are excited for the BIG game. :-)

Lisa~ Liam would be soooo jealous. He, often, says how he wants glasses, braces and diabetes. Sigh. One thing is for sure...he'll have braces! Is Mary Laurel excited?

Anonymous said...

Mary Laurel seems to be imagining herself as a sunglassed starlet. I think that means we'd better get her transitional lenses.

The mall place scared me - no attention to how the glasses fit her, where the lens would align with the eye, etc... so I called a place that specialized in fitting glasses for kids - yikes on the price!

I hate cleaning crayfish, but I love crayfish dauphine.

Anonymous said...

If I had to eat one type of food it would be Italian, but I love cajun food too.

Lisa, what about an eye doc's office, not a mall place but not a specialized place either. Some of those discount glasses places really don't take time, probably especially with kids. (This from someone whose kids got their glasses at Wal-Mart) The last time Stevo & I got glasses we went to Sears and were not happy. Stevo's still scared of the woman there.

Grace - don't forget to pick up a cake mix for Zane's bear. Or maybe he would prefer some Blackened Voodoo.
Coincidendally - I never make dessert, unless company is coming. But after thinking about chocolate cake for three days, I went ahead and made a small one Sunday - devil's food with fudge icing. We've been eating it all week. Nothing smells better baking than chocolate cake or brownies.

They closed school at noon. Not a flake to be seen. Lots of wind. Most of the snow melted in the last couple of days so it's not even blowing.

I agree with Pat. All the girls should go down to Florida. Maybe at the end of Feb. or beginning of March. Emily could bring her new baby. Which, hopefully, will finally be born by then. They're still easy to travel with at that age.

That's cold! Today I walked down to the beach (1.5 miles or less, over a drawbridge) and had an ice cream cone, which I ate sitting on a bench watching the water. Then I came home and took a nap and then walked to the library to try to get a library card.
I also watched Little House on the Prairie.

The boys began school at 8:18...school closed at 9:15 and then, the radio anounced at 9:10 that they wouldn't release them due to poor visibilty. I saw a lot of people turn around and leave the school parking lot. I called the office and they said that I could come in and get the boys...other parents did as well. I guess the radio announced, arounbd 9:30, that parents could come in and get their children. I *just* heard that there are still children (live in the country) at some of the schools.

Algona on CNN.com

My parents bought a house in Algona. It's on Call Street or something like that. It's walking distance to downtown, that's all I know. But it sounds pretty cool. It needs just a little bit of work. They said they're turning the second and third bedrooms into a large jacuzzi and their setting up a facility for sausage making in the basement.

Take a look:

Wow! Comgratulations! It looks beautiful! I think you should make pierogis to go with the sausages!

Nance/Des, those are funny stories. I am student teaching in Story City, and they closed at about 1 today after hearing everyone north of us, including roads heading north, were closed. I drove back to Ames at about 1:30, and it was fine. I had to drive back up there then to pick up Andy at 3:30, when buses would normally be driving, and the roads were even better. Many of the teachers predicted late starts tomorrow though!

Emily, I had a dream about meeting a girl nine months pregnant who went for a long walk, to a Quiznos, and her water broke. Is there a quiznos about a mile away from your house you could walk to?
