As one who rarely....okay never has commented on the blog, I am honored to be remembered on my birthday. I'll trade you the Lutheran pew in your garage for the Catholic pew I have in my garage. -Randy
Happy Birthday to a dandy and awesome guy named Randy adoring husband and father of two beautiful girls with eyes of blue Do a jig and have some brandy!
Happy Birthday, Randy. We wish we could be there to celebrate with you. We're impressed and gratified that the Lutheran pew in Pat's garage has an Irish shamrock whittled into the end of the pew. It's reminiscent of St. Patrick's explanation of the Trinity. Joe and Mary.
Ok so Josh starts his 3 day swiss certification test today. Kind of stressful. Last year only 4 of a class of 12 passed, and you can only take it a year later if you fail. Basically they have a written component, and then they (flown in from Switerland) take a watch each of the students has worked on and mess it all up. You have a limited amount of time to figure out what is wrong and to fix it. p
Peter and I spent a good chunck of yesterday afternoon putting together and decorating a gingerbread house. I left to go shopping for about an hour, come home and ther are two dead, bloody snowmen glued to the side and roof. What is it with boys?
Happy Birthday to Randy! Stevo and I and the Richardsons had a delicious legolamb dinner at the Milbraths last night to celebrate. The cards from Emma and Mary were so cute. The younger girls were dancing like "Chinee" in the living room (it involves lots of arm movement) and we had a nice evening with yummy pineapple upside-down cake and ice cream for dessert.
I was in Office Max this morning right behind this young man in the checkout line who was buying a large orange posterboard and marker, and he turned to me and burst out, "What would you write to protest against the Westboro Baptist Church people who are coming to the Westroads funerals?" It was weird - all the people around (myself included) became so wrathful that those jerks were coming to these funerals, nobody could think of anything that didn't spew hatred and obscenity right back at them. He finally just wrote "Go Home Westboro" and took it out to his car. I don't think I would be able to talk to those people reasonably and calmly. One of these days they're going to go to the wrong funeral to demonstrate and they'll get the crap beat out of them. Gee, too bad.
I need a new keyboard!!! Supposed to read: Sam Elliott character... m.e.

Good luck Josh on your 3-day test.

Okay, so it's 7pm on December 11th and we're watching the "ABC Family" channel. Granted the movie was entitled, "Holiday in Handcuffs," but come on people...not appropriate to watch with the "family." Unnecessarily sexually charged jokes and inuendos..regrettable that THIS was considered a prime time Christmas/Family movie...it wasn't. Now don't get me wrong...it wasn't rated R material...just not okay for kids/families and just so unnecessary to the story they had to tell, which had an okay message and some sweet/silly moments. Anyone see?
BTW: The boys were quickly bored and left the room to play while I finished watching. Not before, Liam gasped and said, "they cussed," and Eli gave me a, "knowing," look...twice. Sigh.
Yah! Whatsupwihdat? Right in the middle of, "Santa's Reindeer," yah see Hef's Bunnies? Ridiculous. Of course, in the middle of, "Holiday in Handcuffs," it all makes perfect sense. Ha! :-<>
Nancy-I've often been amazed at what the ABC Family channel shows. I agree completely. I can't believe how coarse society is becoming. Disney movies serve up heaping portions of fart jokes and guys getting hit in the crotch.
Some museum (Chicago Art Institute) just discovered the statue "The Faun" on display for 10 years as a Gauguin is actually a fake, product of the scammin' Greenbalgh family, who also faked Assyrian stone reliefs and other. Imagine the talent to fake so well!
M.E. What time will Obama be there and where at? We are coming up now on Fri Eve (12/14) instead of Sat Morn (12/15). We won't get there until approx 7:30-8:00 PM weather permitting. Joe J is also coming up and will probably get there before us as he has the day off and is leaving earlier. Since we are coming up on Fri, we are planning on leaving right after Mass on Sun. Please tell your Mom and Dad that we are coming on Fri Eve instead of Sat Morn. Thanks.
German men are the world's worst lovers, a poll of 10,000 women travellers claims. They are branded selfish in bed while second-placed Swedes are too quick. Third are the "too rough" Dutch, followed by "too dominant" Americans, "sloppy" Welshmen and "too loud" Scots. Englishmen were voted 10th worst and accused of being too chubby. Turks were marked down as sweaty, Greeks smelly and Russians hairy.
Italian men were voted best lovers followed by males from France, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, Spain, Denmark, New Zealand, Brazil and Canada.
Nance...you can avoid the crowd on Sunday and stop in at Obama HQ's...they have lots of stuff...right outside our backdoor...stop into the Barack store! haha
Please forgive me for not sharing better. I do not mean to be rude, I am just rudly self-absorbed.
I'll be home for Christmas, you can count on me and mine. Please have snow (no problem, obviously) and mistletoe and too many presents to fit under the tree.
Nance...I have an "in" with the Obama office...I think they would do that...come down and meet Nate and Isabella...and there's others, they're all nice fellas!
P, don't scream "freedom" so loud and long tomorrow - something might go wrong if you give them that rebel yell - just think what happened to poor Mel.
Those fabulous spiral cut hams that Virginia and Doris send every year to Joe and Mary are the Honeybaked brand. Just an FYI. I called Virginia to get the brand. I've never eaten better ham. "Nance...I have an "in" with the Obama office...I think they would do that...come down and meet Nate and Isabella...and there's others, they're all nice fellas! -m.e."
Really? Do yah think? That would be very cool. :-)
Congratulations Josh!!! With all the funeral talk when Pat said "passed" there was a momentary balk it was the TEST, she gasped You're quite alive, my gosh!

I hope everyone is having a great Festivus Season! "Festivus, according to its Roman roots, can be any time at all, but those who adhere to the Seinfeld Orthodoxy affix a date of December 23 to it. I believe it is unFestivuslike to make any of the holiday's rituals rigid. So please ignore this date if you wish. Or have six Festivi this year, one of them on Dec. 23, involving laminating bagels and hoisting mugs of Gorzexian ale."
And now to air my grievances: Lisa and Pat, you are hard to shop for. What would you like?
That is soooo cool! How tiny was the spring you had to balance for 75 points on your final?
Here's my advice on packing: Get a dumpster. It makes things so much easier. You won't really be throwing things away - most of it will get recycled at night when all your neighbors crawl in and haul out what they want.
1. Snowboots. Warm snowboots that come up higher than just above the ankle. Size 7 or 7 1/2. Suitable for sledding with children or wearing to work with a dress on a nasty day. Target or Kmart may have a pair for $25 or less.
2. Crew neck, cable-knit sweater in light green, pink, light blue or red. I know J.C.Penney has some for a reasonable price and I think Target may have them also.
3. Misc. turtlenecks and / or long sleeved t-shirts in just about any bright color or black. I cannot wear olive or taupe or colors in that range on the color wheel. If I do, people may try to send me to the hospital.
It's terribly difficult to find something family oriented. We find ourselves renting old corny videos of the Nancy Drew / Hardy Boys Mysteries and other such 80's fare in order to find something we can all watch together that is not a Disney cartoon or made for tv movie. I don't know what this is doing to my children's socialization, but I refuse to let my children believe it's ok to use the word "sucks" and etc.
Congratulations Josh! Happy hapy happy last day Pat! We have a fake tree with lights already on it. Love it! Don't have to worry about sawing it in half for tree pick-up day, or what to do with the two halves after we miss tree pick-up day. (Burn 'em in spectacular green paint fashion in the backyard sometime late in March)
Did anybody hear about the new Hardy Boys movie that's coming out? Tom Cruise and Ben Stiller are playing the Hardy Boys and the story about the two of them as adults and there was a rift in their relationship so they can't stand/don't talk to each other. Sounds hilarious.
I am wrapping all my online Christmas purchases as they appear on our front porch. Today, I went to wrap Betty's. It's a pink, embelished, zip-up, hoodie sweatshirt in a juniors size large...super cute. I took the thing out of the bag as I was going to re-fold and box it up...and, it is sooooooo TINY! I had Liam try it on just to make sure as I thought, perhaps, my eyes were deceiving me...nope. It fit Liam perfectly and he is 4'9" and 87 pounds...is that really the size person a juniors large is suppose to fit? Sigh. Off to plan B. :-) Molly and Ellen Jayjack...I woulda sent Brian, Andy and Catherine's gifts home with your folks but Catherine's gift still hasn't arrived yet. I will mail them all once it's here. Can I mail them all to one house? If so...where? If not, that's fine too. :-) Grandpa Joe...Tom will have Mike Straub, Betty (Godchild) and Joe4's (belated Birthday) gifts at Sarah's, on Thursday, when you have dinner with the McCall's..could you pink them up? Thanks.
Monica, an idea for Thomas please. I'm shipping everything on Tuesday, so I need to get his gift before then. Can I send the present to Mom and Dad's? I am calling you tomorrow if you don't see this.
Nance- If you ordered a junior sized item for Betty I'll bet it involves this: tight and cropped. Any stroll through the junior department of any store will confirm this.
Jim & Erin & Clan- What are your Christmas plans?
Pete & Mely - Are you coming to Whittemore for Christmas?
And anyone else: Dyall remember those press-backed chairs that Mom and Dad used to have around the kitchen table? If you have one would you be willing to give / sell / trade it? I could use one, but wouldn't mind having two. Thanks!
Hope to see as many of you as possible on Christmas Day!
Emily, Tom would like anything that he has to put together. Model cars or airplanes, legos, science experiments, etc... He also likes to read. He loves soccer and skateboarding. Anything related to those would be great.
Does anyone have any ideas for Danny? He's my last gift and I can't think of anything.
Mike and I took Betty and Joe4 to see Obama yesterday...it was great, good crowd, Betty got a handshake and an autograph..Barack was impressive, seems to have alot of support in Algona. Cathy and Steve and JoeJ were in Algona over the weekend...it was great tosee them, Dad and Mom treated us alltoa very nice dinner at Sarah's...I have never seen Sarah's so busy!
Yes, but now I'm up and at 'em. Someone is now taking me to lunch. It's kind of like your own funeral. You don't realize how much people like you until you move away. P
We had a great visit and finally got to see Mike & Mary's office - very nice! Super-stylish and comfortable at the same time. There's something about the Algona area - everyone has huge basements with big long storage rooms with lots of shelves. If you haven't tried the crab-stuffed ravioli at Sarah's yet, do it. Mmmmm..... We drove through thick fog about half the way home yesterday, but stopped at a sports bar in Carroll to have a real hamburger because Pub burgers were mentioned several times over the weekend (mostly by me) and it festered in our brains until we had to do something about it. We had to dig and rock our car out of its place at the car rental place because it snowed about 5 or 6 inches (Chicago people are laughing scornfully) and they kindly plowed our car in.
Betty and Joe really enjoyed seeing Barack Obama! I have never seen them so excited to talk about politics! Betty has several excellent pictures of him on her cell phone and also shook his hand and got his autograph. She looked at it, giggled, and said, "Mom, his initials are B.O.!!"
I am really starting to like Obama. Of course, if Hillary wins, I'll vote for her, but I REALLY hope Obama wins. We went to a party at Scott's boss's house on Saturday and some(not all) of these law enforcemet guys are so cynical. Making fun of Obama for trying to engange certain countries in discussion. I'm thinking, "you guys work for the State Dept. and you have no faith in diplomacy." As I can't drink, I was more apt to hold my tongue. There was a lot of wine in the beef bourguinon soup that SCott's boss made though. IT was delicious and now I'm looking for a recipe.
Yes, it's perfect after lunch with the asst. deans. My head still hurts though. They are now making borscht. Sour cream everywhere, in everything polish.
I can't believe that Hillary Clinton is touting her white house experience as an asset for herself. By that logic we should be voting for Chelsea or even Socks the cat. What a joke.
Martha~ Sorry about your Mom. Monica~ Get Danny a sweatshirt. Mary Ellan~ The 3 gifts are small and lightweight. Pat~ Y&R is on at 11am. Joe J.~ Was here? Please, tell me he wasn't at Sarah's...'cuz I never saw him.
i CAN'T FIND MY CELL PHONE. i FEAR i MAY HAVE WRAPPED UP IN A PRESENT. sOMEONE CALL ME PLEASE. pAT, YOU SOUND LIKE YOU HAVE SOME TIME OT MAKE A PHONE CALL.
Happy Birthday Thomas K! What's the plan for your big day? Will you have your favorite dinner? Either way, you are a winner! Hope you get your birthday wishes and don't have to help with dishes.

Happy Birthday Randy!
Pat, I can't imagine putting all those little pieces together. Do they use magnifying lenses of some sort?
Betty had a wonderful time going to the movies this weekend with Mary and Mike the Man. It is awesome that Mike and Mary are here.
There was this guy named Randy
who offered Lisa some candy
She took a big bite,
said "I just might
stay with this guy and be dandy."
Happy Birthday Randy
I have the flu and feel like death. :-(
Eli and Liam, also, went to the movie and had fun. :-)
Peter and I spent a good chunck of yesterday afternoon putting together and decorating a gingerbread house. I left to go shopping for about an hour, come home and ther are two dead, bloody snowmen glued to the side and roof. What is it with boys?

Monica, I hope you take a photo of that. It is quite awesome.
Kelly, yes they use magnifiers called LOUPES.
Congrats ELLEN!

Do Lutheran pews have kneelers? If so, and if Randy doesn't want it, I might take it and put it right in front of my big screen television.
I know of at least a couple college football teams that could use some extra prayers next season.
Thanks to all of you. Now if you come up and pack all our stuff I'll really be grateful.

Oh -
And back to tv programming for children.
That's what I have to say today.
I sure hope we get our tree up soon.
lisa
Fake trees vs. real...
how do you feel??
m.e.
Korea has cloned cats that glow in the dark!
Great disadvantage when around critters that bark!
m.e.
Congratulations Josh! Whoo Hoo!
Great job Josh! Go celebrate with a good meal and a movie. Stay warm. I bet Florida is looking better and better after this weather.
Monica
Congratulations Josh! Happy hapy happy last day Pat!
We have a fake tree with lights already on it. Love it! Don't have to worry about sawing it in half for tree pick-up day, or what to do with the two halves after we miss tree pick-up day. (Burn 'em in spectacular green paint fashion in the backyard sometime late in March)
Too much time on my hands, it's ticking away with my sanity. I've got too mcuh time on my hands, it hard to believe such a calamity.
Did anybody hear about the new Hardy Boys movie that's coming out? Tom Cruise and Ben Stiller are playing the Hardy Boys and the story about the two of them as adults and there was a rift in their relationship so they can't stand/don't talk to each other. Sounds hilarious.
Is that true??
How was your meeting?
m.e.
According to this it's true:
The Hardy Men
The meeting was fine. Just another ad meeting. People sitting around and using big words to describe dumb stories about things that cost $1.19.
Josh passed??? Pat, how are you dealing with this? Are you even sad?
I always liked him. I'm sorry for your loss.
D
This is the most disturbing holiday e-card I have ever seen:

Molly and Ellen Jayjack...I woulda sent Brian, Andy and Catherine's gifts home with your folks but Catherine's gift still hasn't arrived yet. I will mail them all once it's here. Can I mail them all to one house? If so...where? If not, that's fine too. :-)
Grandpa Joe...Tom will have Mike Straub, Betty (Godchild) and Joe4's (belated Birthday) gifts at Sarah's, on Thursday, when you have dinner with the McCall's..could you pink them up? Thanks.
Monica~ The Christmas photo of your kids is way cute! Oh and the ice encrusted, berry tree in the background is spectacular. Kudos to you. :-)
Oops...piCk, not piNk. Must have Betty (pink) on the brain. :-<>
Monica, an idea for Thomas please. I'm shipping everything on Tuesday, so I need to get his gift before then. Can I send the present to Mom and Dad's? I am calling you tomorrow if you don't see this.
Nance-
If you ordered a junior sized item for Betty I'll bet it involves this: tight and cropped. Any stroll through the junior department of any store will confirm this.
Jim & Erin & Clan-
What are your Christmas plans?
Pete & Mely -
Are you coming to Whittemore for Christmas?
And anyone else:
Dyall remember those press-backed chairs that Mom and Dad used to have around the kitchen table? If you have one would you be willing to give / sell / trade it? I could use one, but wouldn't mind having two. Thanks!
Hope to see as many of you as possible on Christmas Day!
Lisa
Emily,
Tom would like anything that he has to put together. Model cars or airplanes, legos, science experiments, etc... He also likes to read. He loves soccer and skateboarding. Anything related to those would be great.
Does anyone have any ideas for Danny? He's my last gift and I can't think of anything.
I'm strating to hate Christmas.
Monica
Pat, do you have an new email?
Or does anyone have another, non-work email for Pat?
Ed...the Straub elves are hilarious!!!
Nance, if Tom pulls up into our back parking area, we can put the gifts right into our car, if you want!
m.e.
Mike and I took Betty and Joe4 to see Obama yesterday...it was great, good crowd, Betty got a handshake and an autograph..Barack was impressive, seems to have alot of support in Algona.
Cathy and Steve and JoeJ were in Algona over the weekend...it was great tosee them, Dad and Mom treated us alltoa very nice dinner at Sarah's...I have never seen Sarah's so busy!
m.e.
Hi it's me, laying in bed, with a laptop on my lap. My new email is patsystraub@gmail.com
I had a party last night (or went to one in my honor) and can't move my head right now. These bright lights hurt.

Apparently your hands are a little shaky too.
Way cool you took them, Mary Ellan!
Do you know Martha Steward is Polish? She's making stuffed cabbage and pierogies and talking about "Mother" today.
P
Martha has a killer Polish mushroom soup, traditionally served on Christmas Eve.
So, Pat, are you enjoying daytime TV?
Yes, it's perfect after lunch with the asst. deans. My head still hurts though. They are now making borscht. Sour cream everywhere, in everything polish.
P
I can't believe that Hillary Clinton is touting her white house experience as an asset for herself. By that logic we should be voting for Chelsea or even Socks the cat. What a joke.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a gift for Danny? Please!?!
Monica
Martha is talking bout her mother so much because her mother just died a couple of weeks ago.
Monica
Emily~ Quit making you your bed with the cell phone in it.
Joe J. was in Whittemore Friday night only - he had to work Saturday night.
Oh good...I was worried! Ha, ha. ;-)
Thanks for calling Nance. Yes, I often make the bed with the phone in it.
Does anyone have Monica's address handy?
Monica Straub and Joe Kennedy
810 East Main
Robins, Ia 52328
Is this a test? If so...I win, I win! :-)
Nanc, Joe J was sitting next to you all night at Sarah,s. He was disguised as Joe IV.
Ha! I thought something seemed different. :-<> :-)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY THOMAS KENNEDY!
