Hope everyone had a great Christmas. Wish we could have been at Mom and Dad's, but we had a nice, quiet Christmas.

Count your blessings, Frank. Someone died on Christmas when a Siberian Tiger apparently jumped a 15 foot moat then over a 20 foot fence to escape. It mauled three people, one of whom died. San Francisco zoo.

Hey, what's the story on the Apple Valley zoo when Dad and Mom took the younger kids there?

Here the wind's blowin'
The temperature's lowin'
Gotta get up at three
drive to Midway and see
if Jacksonville's warmer
I bet it will be.

Happy New Year to all!
Watch the ice and don't fall
Don't drive if you're drinking
on Highway 18
or anywhere - you should
just draft someone's teen.

Poor Benazir. So so sad. She was very brave.

I liked her song, "shadows of the night."

When Joe Biden was last at Sarah's he said his primary foreign policy concern was Pakistan. He commented on the country with a large contingent of radicals AND nuclear weapons. That was about 5 months ago. At that time no other candidate was expressing this type of concern.

He's also Irish Catholic. Commutes over an hour everyday to be home with his family rather than keep a suite in DC. Played college football. Smarter than hell and has a great sense of humor. What more do you want in a president?

Bhutto wrote a book soon to be published, something about Islam, Democracy, and the Western World. Hillary and McCain were quick to declare how long they had known her and what they would do if they were president right now. I hope one of the news shows does a feature about her life and influence, instead of just reporting the violence surrounding her death and funeral.

Don't be fooled. Benazir was a crook (not any MORE crooked, but a crook nonetheless). Her husband was known as "Mr. Ten Percent" based on the kickbacks that were required in order to win gov't contracts when she was prime minister.

"Hit Me with your Best Shot" was pretty good though.

Well, she was in politics, wasn't she?

I think she was amazing.

She did extract a price as PM but she wasn't looting Pakistan, it's a tradition over there. I read some stuff when she came back and I didn't get the idea she was any more rapacious than any others. At any rate while you can argue about that, I don't see how you can argue about her bravery in coming back to Pakistan knowing she'd prolly be dead meat. If she's in it for gain, she never would have come back. There's no percentage in being dead. She was no common crook.

Yes, she was accused of corruption and maybe she did take some kickbacks, but she had many enemies back then too, so who knows how reliable the accusations were. It seems she was destined to suffer the same fate as her father. Her father is mentioned quite a lot in the book Charlie Wilson's War, which I'm only half way through now.

Well, she said that all the children of Pakistan deserved no less than her own kids, had she chosen to stay in Dubai, living quite comfortably. Plus, it's not like her kids are very young.

I heard they were teenagers.

True story that JUST happened...my Mom calls me from the Arby's parking lot in Clear Lake and says that a Dad got out of his car, madder than heck, swearin' a blue streak and opened the back door and started **swinging** at one of his three children. The other two kids got out of the car, Dad gave up on the one he was hitting and the Dad and 2 kids walked into Arby's while the Mom and the child, that was the object of Dad's aggression, stayed in the vehicle.
I call 911 and the following is the actual converstaion...almost word for word.
Operator: Kossuth County blah, blah, blah.
Nance: Hi, say I am calling regarding a strong concern I have about an incident that is occuring at Arby's in Clear Lake.
Operator: You'll have to call Clear Lake.
Nance: Were?
Operator: The police department.
Nance: Yes, but what is their number?
Operator: I don't know, you'll have to look it up.
Nance: But, you're 911?!
Operator: I don't have that number, you'll have to look it up.
Nance: Thanks.
Operator: Good-bye.

"Bill Clinton in Algona" was so fun last night!! At the pizza place on State street...Mike and I and Desmond Phelan and Caitlin plus Joe3 and Betty. Gave his talk and then shook hands with all 7 of us (plus a few other peeps)...he stopped right next to me to lean over a booth and shake hands with a bunch of people behind us, I could have pinched his behind!!

The doors opened at 5:30...but we knew he'd be late, we had a few beers at Pep's and walked over at 7:10...they had stopped letting people in...but we were good looking and clever and they let us in!! It was great!

Joe Biden and his group were suppose to come on Sunday at 4:30, but they called and pushed it to 8pm. Coffee and drinks only. Open to the public.

Hello to all---I just thought you'd like to know that Pat mistakenly dialed Mary Ellan about 8:30 this morning (Saturday), so they talked briefly. She and Josh left St. Paul about 1:00 pm yesterday and made it all the way to the Tennessee border last night, so they must have been almost to Memphis. They were not quite half way to south Florida, so with an earlier start today, they should make it to Lake Worth or Jupiter tonight. Dad

Hi, it's Pat in a hotel in Valdosta Georgia. We didn't do so well for time today. Chattanooga was a mess of traffic, truckers and rvs and mountains. Joe did you ever use a runaway truck ramp? Atlanta scared the heck out of me. I never want to drive there in a van with loose steering again. Georgia is the land of billboards and crazy drivers and boiled peanuts. We were only able to get a smoking room tonight and I think the party just left. We will probably make lake worth tomorrow around 1 or so. We hope. I thought we'd be there by now, but we have another 7 hours I think.
