Happy birthday, Tommy K.
You are the man
It's your day.
Hard to believe 11 years have past
Since your mom had you at last
after hours of Christmas shopping
for her kids
you kept her hopping.

What birthday dinner are you requesting?

Graham is my godchild
it's his birthday, hooray!

wintry day.
Hope to see you soon as Christmas

With presents and cheer and lots of
good fun.

A late Happy Birthday to Graham!
You should pour yourself a wee dram
and raise it to toast
with those who love you most -
But that might cause a huge traffic jam!

Hey, what happened to my Thomas poem?

Happy Birthday Graham and Happy Birthday Thomas.

Random thoughts: do the people in your town return shopping carts to the front of the store or to the designated spot in the parking lot? Very few people do here and they leave their carts strewn about the parking lots and it drives me crazy. Why are people too lazy to take 20 seconds to return the cart to its proper spot?
I saw a worker collecting carts from the parking lot and I asked him if it annoyed him and he said, Not really. I leave mine in the parking lot too."

I highly highly recommend Ben and Jerry's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch.

It's job security for the cart collectors...not to return your cart. However, I always do.

Cathy, what did happen to your poem? It was good.

OH, one more thing: I highly recommend the book Charlie Wilson's War. Scott read it a few years ago and I'm reading it now. IT's very good and I usually read fiction. I know the movie is coming out soon, but the book is always better. Or at least I can't think of an exception to that rule.

Anonymous said...

The movie Starship Troopers was 100 times better than the book.

Anonymous said...

I'm preggers.

Ed X said...

Apocalypse Now was better than the story Heart of Darkness, also - I heard that the Where's Waldo movie is better than the books.

Anonymous said...

The only way the book could be 100 times worse than the movie is if it was dipped in dingo dung or toxic waste. Not calling the movie bad, exactly, just saying...
I would say the "book-is-better" theory applies only in those cases in which the book preceded the movie, not the other way around. For example, the movie "Star Wars" is way better than the book written after the fact. But what about movies based on comic books? Or on TV shows? (mostly bad) Or on poems? Anybody else see "Troy"? Is the Golden Fleece movie bad or a campy masterpiece? Is Bruce Campbell a comic genius or a really bad actor? Or both? I can't wait to see the movie "The Omnivore's Dilemma"

Anonymous said...

I meant "Starship Troopers", not "Apocalypse Now" which falls into my category of really great movies that I never want to see again.

i love the fact that jamie lynn and britney's mom wrote a parenting book that the publisher has now put on hold.

Last night, I attended my first band concert. I completely expected it to be super long and boring. Of course, I feigned enthusiasm and knew that I would enjoy the 3 minutes of stage time Eli had...but, really had low-expectations all around. Boy, was I surprised! It was really enjoyable. Fun to hear the children as they proceed up the band ladder and a Christmas sing-a-long at the end. :-) We had front row seats and that darn Megan Lappe was right in front of Eli (who looked very handsome and was so proud)...had a perfect view of Betty though and she sure looked pretty!
Unfortunately, Tom had to work and scooted in near the end...I think I heard him tell someone this was the best concert ever...ha, ha. :-<> :-)

Happy Birthday Thomas K!
What's the plan for your big day?
Will you have your favorite dinner?
Either way, you are a winner!
Hope you get your birthday wishes
and don't have to help with dishes.

Today's bday:

It is the birthday of Irish nationalist Maud Gonne, the woman who broke the heart of William Butler Yeats. Gonne was legendarily beautiful — six feet tall with cascading red hair, and the poet Yeats proposed shortly after meeting her and he stayed a virgin until he was 31 in the hope that she would marry him. Gonne refused his repeated proposals and focused all of her passion on the cause of Irish independence. She campaigned for land reform, advocated for political prisoners, and founded the Daughters of Erin to oppose British cultural influence in Ireland. She was also the model for many of Yeats' heroines. In his 1902 parable of Ireland's troubles, Cathleen ni Houlihan, Gonne played the title role, an old woman, Mother Ireland, who sheds her cloak to reveal a young, vibrant, free nation.

Randy made me go to the theatre to watch Starship Troopers with him for his birthday present years ago. It was the longest 20 hour movie I have ever not sat through. Thank goodness for the snack bar and bathroom.

Any word yet on the Pete Straub and Jim Straub families Christmas plans?

Hey, my mother in law has this pretty piece of furniture if anyone wants it. It's too big for us. It looks nothing like a computer desk, more like a china cabinet or something. If you are interested let me know, I'll give you her address.

Pat, Yes, Please ask around. I think the desk is cherry, made by Hooker Furniture Company. I bought it in 1999 at Gabbert's for about $1,600. Big investment, big hunk of furniture. Great for storage and a computer. Has a slide-out keyboard tray plus a desktop that slides out over that so you have a writing surface easily available in front of the computer monitor and over the keyboard. It weighs a lot. Would need professional movers with appropriate gear -- straps and a lift or ramp to use on truck and exiting house, probably. Measurements: 60" high x 51" wide x 23" deep.

Lisa, Pete and Mely will arrive on Sunday, 12/23. Jim and Erin and kids will get here on Christmas Day and will be staying at the AmericInn. It looks like there will be 11 children plus families here.

To everyone: As you know, the first to arrive get the beds. Mary & mike have one bedroom. Frank & Ed will share the twin bed room and since Frank has to leave on Sunday, Don can use the empty bed when he gets here. That leaves the basement for everyone else, most of whom are arriving on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. We have the 4 single beds in the basement plus 2 rollaways and some smaller kids can use the floor. If you have them, bring sleeping bags. It is possible that some may have to find a motel. Dad

Well, I'm sure if you asked a cart collector in Iowa if they were annoyed people leave their carts wherever, he probably would be. That's just rude, as is being the only neighbor in a building who doesn't clean up their dog's poop and makes the whole area look bad.

At Target the other day, we saw the book I am Legend, with Will Smith on the cover and said "Based on the new hit movie," but wan't that book already published?

I just spent 28.5 minutes on the phone, all just to disconnect my land line and internet. but keep my cell phone. ridiculous.
p

Anonymous said...

TO be honest, 28 minutes doesn't seem too bad. I've spent 28 minutes or more just on hold before.

Anonymous said...

But it should be very easy! THat was the time I spent just talking with someone while they filled out all sorts of screens and stuff.
No it's not my worst. I've been on wiht Qwest for a full hour. I just thought disconnecting would be simple.

True. IF it makes you feel better, I'll tell you something that's really ridiculous: growing out of your underwear. That can only mean one thing - your ass is expanding. Every woman's worst nightmare.

I wish I would have know THAT a month ago!

Em..you have a lass ofa ass
'tis cute even passing gas,
if you give a care, it seems

They NEVER want to let you go. Try getting rid of AOL sometime. Or some times, because it'll take more than once.

I tried 7 times before Sprint took "PowerVision" off my phone bill which was some sort of TV you get through your phone. I e-mailed, text messaged, called and stopped by a Sprint Store to tell them in person. They took it off only now that I am no longer under contract with them and can move to any carrier I want. I am still going to try to get them to credit me for all the months that I paid for it after I had told them to take it off. We will see how that goes. Problem is, it wasn't a big priority for me so I didn't press it enough.

Anonymous said...

while talking to SPRINT:

Ed, stand like a statue, become part of the machine
punching all the numbers, always talking clean,
engage by intuition, the digit counters fall,
that texting Sprint store hopping only makes 'em stall!

Hi, Mary called and wanted me to post that everyone should say a prayer for mom right now. She is having an MRI in Mason City at the moment. Her dr. sent her over there, and it was mainly to address her headaches.
P

Anonymous said...

Absolutely, I will...and, I just put her on my Mom's all-powerful prayer chain as an SOS and it will go out to 60 women, immediately.

There have been a lot of people and newspapers endorsing presidential candidates as of late. And I realize as the Graveyard Games champion many of you are looking to me for a little guidance. In fact, I'm sure many of you are with holding a final decision until I make mine known. Well, here it is.

I'm endorsing Democratic Sen. Joe Biden. The man has complete credibility with Republicans. He penned the Violence Against Women Act, he as a bipartisan plan to get us out of Iraq responsibly (70% of the Senate voted to approve his plan). As a 35 year senator he has served on vitually every committee and is presently on the Foreign Relations Committee. He knows first hand almost every world leader and understands the wheeling and dealing world that is Washington DC.

Edwards is too much of a Red. Hillary is too divisive and Obama will get chewed up and spit out by the Republican attack dogs.

There you have it. You can now go caucus with confidence.

By the way, Joe Biden will be at Sarah's Dec. 30th at 4:30 pm.
