Happy 54th Birthday, Don! :-)

Anonymous said...

Hi, everyone---We spoke to Don last night. As you know, he expected to get out of St. Peter on June 26 and that he would spend a few months at a halfway house in Mankato--the Hickory House where he lived several years ago. Well, they changed the schedule. He said that whenever he goes outside now it is in groups such as work groups or groups just going out for a walk. That will now change and from now until he is released he will be allowed to go out alone. He said jokingly that it is probably just a test to make sure he won't run. At any rate, he hopes it will be for just 2 or 3 weeks.
Another issue. This morning Mom found a shoe box in our back entry. In it are a pair of shoes. I think they used to be referred to as "wedgies." The tops are black with an open toe and the bottoms look like a cork composition. The heels are about 2" and they taper down to about 1" at the front. They are size 8 and the name of the brand is "xhilaration." The top of the box is pink and the box itself is white. Please call if the description sounds familiar. Dad.

Anonymous said...

Mary can confirm or deny this... but I suspect the shoes are hers. They sound like a pair she bought just before she left my home and went to yours to break her ankle.

By the way Dad you may wish to update your vocabulary. A wedgie now refers to a painful pull up on undergarments. Yikes!

P. Rose said...

They sound like Tom's good shoes.

Anonymous said...

Geesh Joe2...were you a shoe salesman in a former life? Good description...I'll take two pair in a size 10. :-)

Anonymous said...

Pat - you dork, I can't afford good shoes.

Tom

Don't know if Don can read this but- Happy Birthday.

Hope to see you soon.

Tom
(I'm wearing stinky work boots, Pat. The kind working men wear.)

Anonymous said...

Lisa...they are called wedgies still, aren't they?...and I forgot I bought those shoes, who wants them, they scare me now!

OK, so everyone report in on their weekend plans. What are you all doing this weekend?
p

Anonymous said...

I'm picking up Betty from camp Saturday and beyond that, mowing the yard and checking in on ABATE type stuff at Sarah's. Also, I plan to grill something really, really good on Sunday. I haven't grilled much this year.

Anonymous said...

Say a prayer, cross your fingers and do a dance...Sarah's has 10, 000 eggs, 200 pounds of potatoes, 221 tee's and much, much more to sell this weekend in honor of the Freedom Rally. I am comforted by the fact that Joe3 and my Dad will be holding a, "terrorist watch," out at the restaurant. :-<> :-)

Working my fat off...I lost 6 pounds yesterday. I'm trying for a total of 20 in 3 days. If a fit teenage wrestler can make weight in 12 hours by losing 5 pounds I figure I can too.

Last night, Eli had a game in Ruthven and Liam had his LAST game in Algona. My mom and I went to Liam's and my Dad took Eli to his. Liam had an awesome game and hit a homerun. While running towards home plate...he wore a big smile and, "raised the roof," in celebration. Eli's Rec. Department team, sadly, lost another game...but, he reportedly did fine and had a good time. Thankfully, Eli's Garrigan team has only lost one game...must be 'cuz we have God on our side! Ha, ha. :-)

Anonymous said...

this weekend i'm headed to Naperville to go to Ribfest with Ed. George Thorogood and the Destroyers are playing.

Anonymous said...

That wrestler weight loss plan is baaaaad for you. It consists of wearing a rubber head to toe suit (with hoodie) and running about five miles every day. And not eating for a week. Baaaaaaad.
Happy Birthday to Don, I hope he has a nice day.
This weekend we have lots of yard work to do. Saturday Ryan and I are going to the draft of our fantasy football league (We named our team the Devil Dogs). Please let Devin Hester be on the draft roster. We get first draft pick. I want to take the kids to the pool one day and to the Wildlife Park one day.
My secret goal this weekend is to keep the t.v. off.

Anonymous said...

SISTER SARAH'S is open:
Friday: 10am-Close
Saturday: 7:30am-Close
Sunday: 7:30am-Close

Anonymous said...

A Chef's weight loss plan consists of wearing loose shorts & cotton tee and working for 12 hours in a 450 degree kitchen.

Anonymous said...

Hey Joe3, while conducting your terrorist watch...wear your Freedom Rally Tee and tell all the bikers they can buy one from my Dad! Thanks!!! :-)

Anonymous said...

The next three days will be 17 plus hour days for me. But Nance exagerates - the kitchen isn't quite 450 degrees

Tom

And it has a wicked dew point.

I am sneaking off and closing our office and going to a movie. My boss is gone. That's what I'm doing today. The rest of the weekend = we have a party in Wisconsin saturday, and otherwise will do house readying stuff.

I'm working at the Des Moines Arts Festival Saturday and Sunday, it should be fun. Selling yummy yummy Indian food.

Lisa, are you going to take the girls down there? I think I'll be near Hotel Fort.
I just brought back some golf clubs from home, so hopefully going golfing Sunday.
Good luck at the Freedom Rally Tom & Nance.

Anonymous said...

Well...it's really hot. Tom has been coming home, every night, looking as if he walked through a rain storm! :-<>

Anonymous said...

Tom, be sure to drink plenty of fluids - and no, beer does not count.

Hope Don has a good birthday, as good as can be expected.

I don't know what we'll do this weekend, but I'm guessing it will involve the beach and some grilling.

As always, we'll be on terrorist watch. Scott was talking this morning and he said that his experience in his current position tells him that the world is a very scary place and that it is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. The radicals will get more and more radical until the moderates try to reign them in so to speak. He says the FBI and task forces like he is working on do a lot of little things that people don't hear about, but what scares him are the ones that slip by. And they're out there. Sorry for the doom and gloom. Have a fun weekend!

Anonymous said...

Nance, I'm sorry but in our shoe inventory we don't have anything as big as a size 10. Joe 3

You're Joe2.

We are making our annual trek to the hill at Memorial park for a free concert and fireworks. I go out early in the morning and stake out our spot with blankets. They expect 50,000 people! This year is KC and the Sunshine band (it's free) we bring food and alcohol..it's always fun! That's tonight..tomorrow night Jim and Erin are driving through from Colorado, so we'll grill out or maybe go down for a river walk. we have Open Houses on Sunday! Wish we could all get together!

A lady came in to the clinic last night with pain in the ball of her foot. She said it may have been from three weeks ago when she bought new shoes called wedgies. I'm working all weekend and also on the 4th. Monica would like to head up to Algona, but Tom has to serve at Saturday evening mass.

Anonymous said...

Actually...I'm in line for the new I-pod phone, have to wait untill 6:00! I'm not going to buy one, but I just want someone to 'xplain to me...what happens if you're listening to music and the phone rings? I just want to be close to something that's going to change our world! After that, hmmm I think I'll go across the street and watch the line for terrorists. You know it's a big weekend for them, the 4th of July and the Iphone.

Anonymous said...

I just accepted a job at the Des Moines Register. I will be in a rotation designing the front page and the Metro/Iowa section. I'm going to start on July 30.

So if anybody would like to see the wonders of Kansas before I leave, plan a trip soon.

Anonymous said...

Congratulations Joe Jayjack! That's wonderful, I bet your parents are excited. When do you start? Have you told you boss yet? Job well done!

Congratulations, Joe! I hope we'll start to see some New York tabloid style headlines.

Wow, Joe J.! What great news. Please ignore earlier comments about Des Moines snobs, or just become one yourself. :)

Speaking of jobs I start a new one on the 9th 10% more $ and promotion. They told me it was more work but I got axcess to their systems and it seems like less. Anyway more $. Closer to home too. Only 5 miles.

Wow, congrats to both of you! Closer to home is a huge incentive I think.

Congrats to Joe J. and Pete. I will be home busy keeping the big cat and dog from eating Ellen's kitten. It has started drinking out of a bowl but no solid food yet. Just milk. If she had brught home a full grown cat it would have been easy to say no. Why is it kittens are so cute?

We have no real plans for the 4th. Joe is working and so is Ellen.

Monica

monica, where ellen find this kitten?

btw, there's this breakfast place next to my house and there's this guy who works there who looks just like joe jayjack. so joe - if i ask you to fetch some coffee and a clean fork when we're at the farm, you'll know why.

For Thanksgiving this year we should have gopher stuffed inside a kitty, stuffed in side a dog, stuffed inside a lion.

Anonymous said...

That would be a liodokitgo....sounds yummy! We can catch the lion tonight when he's sleeping, in the quiet jungle.

Jim and Erin and their kids stopped through and spent the night on their way back from a family vacation in Colorado...we had a fabulous time with them!

So, how was ribfest, how was abate? How was grilling?

Have you heard about the lonesome loser?...Beaten by the king of hearts every time...have you heard about the Little River Band...I forgot to mention they played before KC and the Sunshine band on Friday...lots o hits between those two!

I'm craving a delicious bass, has anyone been fishing? Maybe I'm craving a good movie...has anyone seen one?

Yes, we really enjoyed Knocked Up too. We also just watched The Good Shepherd. It was really interesting, a bit long though.

My Uncle Danny (my favorite and my Godfather) came this weekend to visit and help my Dad sell tee's. :-<>
He has an amazing Harley and gave the boys a ride in our neighborhood....they wore skate board helmets. They thought Uncle Danny and his bike was really cool! :-)

Anonymous said...

How were t-shirt sales? Was it a good weekend for business?

This weekend is "Founders Day" in Algona...looks like some fun things on the schedule...trolley tour, free kids movie...beverage garden and street dance...anyone going??? July 5-July 7.

Anonymous said...

ABATE went well. Friday and Saturday were about the same as last year...however, Sunday was much less. That can happen as sometimes they head outta town early on the last day. LOTS of wonderful feedback about our food and staff. :-)
I don't think Tom reached his 20 pound weight loss goal...but, he looks great nonetheless.
Tee's sold and we rec'd great feedback...unfortunately, we bought way too many and will have to try and sell them throughout the summer. We're gonna have our staff wear them, through August, and give them some sort of an incentive to sell.
Not sure of any specific casualities except for an accident with a critical head injury in Whittemore and an accident here...that's all we know.
We had some equipment failures. The most expensive being our water heater...so much for profit! Ha, ha.
A server came in a little loopy and got mad about having, "sections," and quit on the spot. Loser.
That's all I can think of. Tom is napping. He'll fill yah in too.

We hate Founder's Day...bad for business.

Anonymous said...

Oh! *Mike Pospaschell (sp???) was in and Tom had fun chatting with him. He thought the restaurant looked great. Nice to hear. :-)

*2nd owner of Sarah's.

Everybody should try to get to a Founder's Day in Algona. On Friday night from 7-11pm, there is a beer garden. People who never go anywhere go there. I mean, one year I saw like six old widows sitting along a cement wall all drinking beer out of plastic cups. It is just huge fun. Then, after it closes, all the happy people migrate over to Pep's or Billy Jo's. I guess they will also be going to the Lava Lounge. Unfortunately, I have had to work the last two weekends of Founder's Day...and now I only work Friday and Saturday nights, so I won't be able to go...but if you get a chance...go...it is a blast. Always a decent band and people dancing in the street by Algona Publishing...stuff for kids to do...preteens running around in packs...old people with folding aluminum lawn chairs...toddlers standing and moving to the music...you just gotta experience it yourself!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Congratulations Pete and Joe! We're supposed to have thunderstorms for the fourth. It rains every year. Never shoulda' helped that broken leg person.

Anonymous said...

Yes, congratulations Joe Jayjack...very cool! We're happy for you. :-)
Congrat's Pete...you rock!
I was jokin' about hating Founder's Day. It's actually good for our dinner crowd...we just wish more peeps would drive out to OUR bar afterwards instead. Maybe, we should send out, to the event, a person to pass out drink BOGO coupons! :-)

Anonymous said...

Could you do a tent or something down there? Or a booth?
P

Anonymous said...

Good idea! I don't think so though...because we are short a cook. Not even sure we would be allowed to...whatayahthink Tom?

Anonymous said...

Hey...we should have a T-shirt stand and hand out drink coups! Hmm...good idea...or, dumb?

Anonymous said...

Wow! Congratulations to Joe J. and to Pete! Exciting news!

When are you moving here, Joe? Wanna buy a two story house with a full attic?

MOre importantly, will we get to see you?

Anonymous said...

LIsa, I'm curious, aren't you guys moving to CB?

Frank, did you send your resume to Google?

Jude woke up at 3, 4:30 and 6:30...so tired. I think he was having strange dreams.

Anonymous said...

The beer garden is separated from the rest of the activities. No kids in there...everybody has to show ID, etc. All drinking is contained in there. There are some little tents for food in the parking lot of Algona Publishing, or at least there were in the past, but I would think you would have to have made arrangements by now to have a space there. I don't get the idea it's a money making sort of thing...just a city sponsored couple days of fun downtown. Well, I suppose the DQ gets a boost from it!! Oh, there is also an old car show in front of the courthouse. One year they had a contest for the best beard.

Anonymous said...

Oh, about the BOGO coupons...I have never seen anything like that at this event. I don't think you'd get all that much business from them if you did it anyway. People go downtown for this. It is a downtown night. That's where the action is...believe it or not!!!!

Poll: If you had a '95 Camry with just a very small amount of rust, and 94000 miles on it, would you put $2500 in to it? It will get you new struts and axles all around, belts, plugs, valve cover for gasket, and battery.
P

Anonymous said...

The Blue Book private sale value on a '95 Toyota Camry DX 2dr coupe w/ 94,000 miles and in fair condition is $2800.
Is that what yah have?
Does that help?

Anonymous said...

Oh and a 4dr sedan in good condition without listing all the features you may have that aren't automatically selected is $3600.

Anonymous said...

If you don't put some money into it, eventually you will have to have another car. That probably means payments. If you bought another car, you'd end up with car payments. Say $250/month. So you spend ten payments worth of a new car on your old car...yes, you still have an old car, but one you know...and one that is paid for. Payments are a pain. I'd put the money into it until it became a money pit. It's worth more to you than you'd get on a trade in. If it lasts you, say, three more years, that is $250*36=$9000. If you even spend half that on repairs, you're still $4500 to the good. Not to mention that taxes and insurance are considerably cheaper...so that figured in, you're better off with the old car if you can manage. That's my $0.02 worth.

Anonymous said...

Do it. You can drive it for 300,000 more miles.

Anonymous said...

Toyotas last and last. And, there's something (awesome) to be said for no payments! :-)

Anonymous said...

Oh, yeah, and new or newer doesn't mean it won't have to have something repaired. How many of us have bought something new to us, only to have to turn around and fix something! I know I have, and it's a bummer!!
I drive a 2002 Grand Prix with 112,000 miles on it. I am STILL paying for it...and just put $1300 into it. But it has a great engine in it...I plan on driving it until I can give it to Betty when she gets her school permit. :-)

Anonymous said...

Molly picked up me, Stevo and his mom at the airport last night (just got back from Dreiling family reunion in Colorado Springs - what fun!) and as were driving along outside the terminal we saw a guy that looked just like Desi and he was looking at us as if he were thinking, "That looks just like the Jayjacks" and we were both right!
We went to the top of Pikes Peak and experienced altitude drunkenness - not drinking, just feeling as if we were drunk and might fall over and breathing deeply but still not quite enough oxygen but they make the world's best doughnuts up there - nothing like them anywhere, except maybe Nepal. I learned to make a kind of dumpling called butter balls - how could they not be good? - and bierocs - pretty much like Runzas only better. At the Volga German cooking class. Stevo has some wickedly funny cousins.

Anonymous said...

Ha! Way cool that you saw each other! :-)
Okay...I'm really going now as ALL of my statements/reports have finished printing...and, I have a lunch date!
Bye.

Anonymous said...

Also, p, sand out that rust, spray it with primer and order some matching spray paint from a car parts place - you can get it in a spray paint can, so it's easy - and spray that whole fender or door or whatever and your car will look just like new. I'm going to do it any day now to our van.
The big question is: does the air work? If not, get rid of it.

Anonymous said...

I always think that the blue book value is not the deciding factor. If you start pouring enough money into your car that you may as well start making payments, that is the deciding factor.
Look at me. I drive a 12 year old car and hope it lasts and lasts.

Yes, Em, you are correct. Hopefully in the not too distant future.

Anonymous said...

Cathy...did you see Jim and Erin on Pikes Peak? I think you guys were just a day off each other's schedule!

Anonymous said...

I really want to come up for Founder's Day!!! But, alas it will have to wait for next year, when we'll be able to walk to downtown!!! Yes it's true, Mike and I are moving to Algona :-)
If all goes as planned, we are buying Algona Realty on August 1st!
We are VERY excited...but, just the preliminary papers have been signed, so it's still a secret, (although Joe and Tom have both been asked about it) so, if you talk to anyone from the area, please don't mention it yet...just a few more weeks!
Mom is going to help us run the Kossuth Co. Fair booth for Algona Realty...we have blue polos with a NEW logo...plan a trip to town the week of the fair...August 1-5th.

Anonymous said...

Congrats to Mike and Mary!! I wish we were moving to Algona. Maybe when Scott can retire in 14 years, but he'd have to start a second career, I could teach.

Anonymous said...

Straub-Lavelle Algona Realty! Love the sound of it! I think we'll try to come up for the fair.
OK, people, we need some feedback on possible dates to finish painting the farmhouse. We are having the Ortega kids come visit us for a week and we were thinking about meeting at the farm at the end of that week for the handoff. I think it's either the weekend of July 21-22 (or 28-29?), so that's one possibility. The Kossuth Co. fair is the first weekend in August so that's out, but how about the second weekend (Aug 11-12)? I think it really needs to be done before the Labor Day weekend. Check your calendars and give us some input.

Anonymous said...

How about groundhog stuffed inside a coyote stuffed inside a deer stuffed inside a cougar? Couyotebambihog, yum.
Scott could start a terrorist watch training academy on the grounds of the ABATE campsite and just close it up for a week once a year.
p, if you despise the car, get rid of it. If you're fond of it, save it. One time I peeked out from under my closed eyelids and saw Stevo pat the dashboard of the van fondly at the top of a steep hill. I knew then that we will never get rid of it until it dies forever. If you have no feelings about cars in general and yours in particular it seems like a good investment to put the money into it unless you'd just like a change.

Anonymous said...

Congratulations Mike and Mary!
Where do you think you guys will be living?
I think the second week in August is a good week for the farm. C, don't forget you're going to be helping two of your kids move the last week in July!
I have no feelings towards any car except my own. I hate hate hate it.

Anonymous said...

Forgot about the moving, although the Register's going to move Joe. Forget the last weekend in July, but the 21-22 is still viable. We'll be there anyway (with Mom's permission), so even if it didn't all get done, some of it will. But if other people were going to come, we would try to arrange to get the extra ladders and scaffolding if possible.

News flash: my new email address is cathy52@cox.net. I can still retrieve email from AOL but it takes ages for each one to come up.

I will be moving on July 26 or 27. I start work on Monday, July 30.

I'm thinking about living downtown, but you will definitely get to see me.

When do you plan to move(Mary and Mike)?

Pat, keep that car. It's a good car. Toyotas last forever. We just put $1200 into our Honda that has 140,000 miles on it.

Yeah, we're keeping it. We've not put much money at all into it in the past couple of years.
