Here's what we did for Mother's Day: Sat around reading the Sunday paper until 11:00 Mass, went to Molly's for brunch afterwards (Catie made the pancakes) went shopping for some summer clothes and grill parts, took a nap, dug up the other half of the front yard to plant grass seed, had a delicious dinner prepared by Stevo, did no dishes, cleaning or laundry. Seamus report : Seamus was hanging around in the front yard while I dug, allowed two couples walking their cute little doggies to pass unmolested, but went nuts when a young, nice, yuppie-looking couple walked by with their huge, beautiful black-and-white Great Dane. Seamus was saying, "Come on! I can take yez with one paw tied behind my back!" standing valiantly in front of Kitty (who looked bored) to shield her from the Great Dane (who looked confused). Then he peed and kicked dirt in the Dane's general direction and wanted a cold beer afterwards. What did you do on Mother's Day?
Tom went into work around 5am and got done around 2pm. I slept in. Did housework. Whazzupwihdat? I used the words, "It's Mother's Day, please...." a lot! They complied. Went to the 4pm showing of Spiderman 3. Very good. Tom grilled...yummy. The boys gave me very nice cards and gifts they made at school. They, also, gave me funny cards they bought, with Dad, and Liam's had the word damn in it and Eli's had the word darn...they thought that was really funny. They gave me a Fart (toot) Extinguisher...for me to use on Dad! Oh and a beautiful hanging outdoor plant. A fun day. :-)
Saturday morning we had to leave story time at the library and Sat. afternoon we had to leave the park. Why? Hitting. However on Sunday I got the best present I could ask for. We went to a little duck pond to feed the ducks and Jude played very nicely with all the kids around, waving and saying hi and sharing bread. He didn't hit once. And in the afternoon as we were waking around the neighborhood he raised his hand to hit a kid and then waved it and said hi. You could see the wheels turning in his head. Another kid even pulled Jude toward him to give him a hug and I thought for sure Jude was going to pummel him, but he was sooooo good. I don't think he liked it but he tolerated it. And this morning at the gym the lady said he didn't hit anyone. Maybe we are finally turning the corner. On Sunday I was actually able to have fun on an outing with my kid. When we were at the little pond, Scott and I turned away for two seconds to look at a big white crane and when we turned back around Jude was already in the murky water up to his thighs. He was trying to point out a piece of bread to the ducks. No harm done. He has no fear of the ocean. He runs right in to the waves, which sucks because the water is very cold and now we just can't play in the sand. He wants to run in the water.
A tribute...someone mentioned kids being in summer events, etc...while driving toward Algona on Mother's Day, I was telling Mike and Caitlin that when we were growing up, (for the summer)we had golf lessons, we were all on swim team and all on baseball and softball! ...Plus Mom and Dad had great dinner parties (no kids allowed) and went out, etc...! Dad made a great Mother's Day dinner, pork loin, and 3 wonderful salad dishes...Mike did the dishes...it was a nice Mother's Day! Joe was there, we had a nice time.
Ok - so I am not sure how this works, but if you follow the link below and you have high speed internet you can watch first run movies on your computer. It is a little sketchy (they only have the second half of spiderman 3) but I watched Hot Fuzz last night with no problems.
Cathy and Steve...thanks for watching Seamus...We'll pick him up today!!! Yesterday we got home at 2:30 and we both had to show houses at 4:00...I had to shower my castless leg...I was shedding skin at all the houses I showed...I don't think anyone noticed! (Caitlin's friends started arriving at 2:30!)
Owning a restaurant leaves little time to play the role of Dad as much as I would like to. By no means do I ignore my kids, but working as much as I do automatically disqualifies me for Father of the Year.
Anytime one of my kids asks me to play catch I will if I have time. In fact, I'm not sure where Liam heard this one, but he will tug at my heartstrings when he says, "Hey Dad. You wanna go throw the old ball around?"
Of course no matter how tired I may be I will - if just for a little while. Nance does a great job of surragate dad. She has logged as many hours as I have "tossing the old ball around."
So of course, it's our great fortune to have the Cleaver family across the street. Every freaking night outside. Dad working on son to fine tune the fast ball, working on the swing, fielding hot grounders and deep fly balls. Hours a night - day after day.
I will admit to some resentment. "If I didn't work as much as I did I could do that, too." In my heart of hearts I doubt I would. Probably because the Cleaver's instruction to thier boy borders on obsession. Dad wants so badly for son to excel in all sports I think the boy is disappointed when he has a less than perfect game.
Anyway, going into the Little League season I had many misgivings about how Eli would do. He had minimal time with me. He gets frustrated easily when things don't go exactly how he would like them to. And we had the Cleaver kid on our team to compare ourselves with. (Bad thing to do, I know - but who doesn't).
So, I was kind of expecting Eli to have a less than good time of it in baseball.
In the first scrimmage they had Eli suited up in catcher's gear. I thought, "Oh great, he'll get tired and ask to move to the feild after ten minutes".
It was a hot day. If you've ever played catcher with that gear on you know how bad it can be on a hot day. It's a lot of work squatted into position, concentrating on poorly thrown balls (more so when thrown by fellow 3rd and 4th graders). A lot of bad pitches are going to get by you and you have to hustle to the backstop to retrieve them.
He was a trooper. Caught the ones he should and he stopped many that would challenge any good feilder. He hustled after the ones that got away.
At bat he had the best hit of the day - a deep fly to right feild for a stand up double. He also hit a hot grounder for a single.
He pitched an inning - and while he doesn't have the speed of the Cleaver kid he throws strikes and puts the ball in play instead of walking batter after batter like many do at that age.
Last night was their first real game (Against Emmetsburg). He did as good a job behind the plate as in the scrimmage. As the lead off hitter he got beaned in the back with a pitch and hustled down to take his base (we'll have to work on charging the mound). He scored from first on a stand up triple hit by the Cleaver kid. He did strike out his second time at bat - but went down swinging.
Don't think I'm bragging - I just wanted to share my relief that my kid is good at something despite me.
Tom is not giving himself enough credit. He does an awesome job balancing a demanding job and being an active Father. He does way more than most Fathers that have a regular M-F/9-5 job. :-)
This being said, it IS funny how amazingly and seemingly awesome and perfect the neighbors are. She and I (very good friends) laugh about how tiring it is, for Tom and I, to watch them excercise all the time while I know she has a super clean house, dishes done from a fabulous meal and an apple pie in the oven and, by the way, she looks amazing! Ha, ha. Someone, over there, is always walking the dog, taking a bike ride or practicing the latest sport. We know this 'cuz we see 'em while having a smoke in our garage.
Just sharing, hope its not too late. Don't pump gas on May 15th!!! In April 1997 there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight. On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas in now over $3 a gallon in most places. There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up. we can do our part on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00(almost 3 billon) out of the oil companies pockets for just one day, maybe it would put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.
I can say absolutely and without reservation that not pumping gas today will have no effect on oil prices. The reasons that oil prices are so high are: 1) problems in Iraq; 2) problems in Nigeria; and 3) growing demand from places like China and India.
Gas on the other hand has a high price right now because the price of crude is relativly high and because many refineries are not running at full capacity as the prepare for the summer driving season (which requires many many changes to the gas that gets produced) after the refineries get fully back online you might see a small drop in the price for a gallon of gas at the pump but by that time the demand may have built up so high (due to people putting off purchases while the price is relatively high) it may not go down at all.
So – don’t pump any gas if you don’t want to, but in the end it isn’t going to matter at all (except to the local station managers with severe cash flow problems).
There is a Mom here in town charged with abuse because after her daughter had a bad soccer game, and after smacking her a few times, she stopped her car interstate and left her on the side of the road!
Yes, it's OK to brag. Also, don't make yourself crazy with guilt. And congrats to Ellen on her awesome report card. I'll bet Cathy got really good grades too. I think the older Straubs got better grades than the younger Straubs for the most part, but I could be wrong. OF COURSE as a teacher let me remind you that grades are not a reflection of intelligence.
Mary, how does your leg feel? Any pain? Is it mushy from atrophy? Say hi to Caitlin.
Oh, Scott has to leave tomorrow for two weeks to do surveillance detection for stupid Condie Rice. Someone come keep me company.
There's a job open at the U of MN right now "Football Quality Control". You watch films and help with the playbook. Entry level. Any takers? $30K and lots of good football tickets. P
Liam did well and was very cute & funny at his baseball game last night. There's nothing like putting catcher's gear on an easily distracted 8 year old to make mom sweat and the crowd smile. The first inning (as catcher) was difficult to watch and the second inning he did awesome! He really connects with the, "fans," from that postion...giving us thumbs up, big toothy grins and doin' the hand motion that says, "I'm watching you." You know. The two fingers to your own eyes and then, pointed out to the other person. Oh well, funny to watch and more difficult to explain. :-) Liam's best play and most proud moment was when the runnher was sliding into home and Liam caught the ball at the last possible second with his foot on the plate. Of course, he was suppose to tag him...but, Liam didn't realize nor have the time to do so and therefore, in his sweet little head he made the best play ever! The smile on his face, beneath the catchers mask, was easily seen from the fans in the stands. :-)
The Clinton campaign has put together what is essentially a 5 minute infomercial. In it Bill speaks glowingly about his wife's accomplishments.
Included in the video is a snippet of then First Lady Hilary and Chelsea chatting with Mother Teresa.
Blatant propaganda. A proponent of abortion in all cases including up to 9 months of gestation using Mother Teresa in a camapaign ad. Mother Teresa wrote extensivly her opposition to abortion. Hillary - What a fake.
I got mediocre grades. One time when weall had to go to confession, I confessed that I hadn't been working up to my potential. Fr. John Vakulskas gave me a penance where I had to look up this reading in the missalette and then say a few Hail Marys. Pretty soon Don came out and looked up the same reading. Then Mary. Then Joe. I don't remember if Lisa was there. Then, as we were the last reluctant penitents in the confession line, Father came out of the confessional and came over to us and boomed, "You guys! You're all bums!" We all snickered proudly. It sounds like the Cleavers are a nice family whose religion is sports. How do those perfect people manage it? Where do they get the energy? Sorry, I filled up yesterday on my way to a meeting in Atlantic. $3.09 a gallon. Still way less than true market value, I bet. What are they paying in Europe right now? Who killed the electric car? Tom, Eli is lucky that you aren't spending 3 hours every night trying to groom a major leaguer out of him. When you play catch with your kids it should be relaxed and fun, with a few tips thrown in from your amazing fund of Dad wisdom.
I think we should arm Jude and turn him loose on that soccer mom. Either he'll give her what she deserves, or he'll show her a gentler, kinder way to be.
Nance & Tom - I hope you have folding chairs in your garage so you can smoke sitting down, instead of standing with shoulders hunched, furtively puffing away. You should relax while you watch the neighbors overachieve.
Emily...yes, my leg is leaving old skin everywhere...I better not commit a crime, my DNA is all over the place.
Desmond collected his "Cleo" award in Miami!! The next night the head guy from London took out all 12 Burnett people...the bill for dinner and drinks was $5,000. That's $420 each!!
Wow, cool for Des. Today is Braden's Birthday. She is so big. We bought her all big kid stuff, instead of dolls and little kid stuff. She's getting her ears pierced today and then... Chuck E. Cheese for dinner. Man, that place should hand out migraine pills with the pizzas. I'm psyching myself up for it right now.
Happy Birthday Braden!!!! How old is she? We went to Chuck E Cheese once and the pizza was barely edible. I wasn't expecting it to be the best pizza in the world, but it was awful. Hope you were able to tolerate it and I agree that a few beers takes the sting out of Chuck E Cheese.
The meal was great. But the tab was outrageous. When we showed up at the hotel this restaurant was in I ordered two vodka/sodas. The bill came to $32. I knew then it was going to be an expensive night for our boss. And we were seriously sitting there for four hours ordering drink after drink and bottle after bottle. Oh yeah, and food. Oh well. Pas Mon Argent. That's French for 'not my money' in honor of our new French holding company. I can't wait till Paris gets that bill.
Tom, you ever think about having an expensive drink on your menu for the sake of having an expensive drink? Not that you should expect anyone to order it. Just to have it to generate talk. Like, "I heard someone ordered the $55 Pina Colada last weekend." It could come in a giant glass complete with a plastic shark and a pocket full of insulin. Or something.
Dad, Brian, Scott and Randy (a closet Husker fan): I noticed that Nebraska plays Nevada over Labor Day weekend. They're actually a bowl team. Very odd for Nebraska at that point in the season. Not your usual Pacific or North Texas. Anyway, if we were able to get the LaTech game on television at the bar in Decatur last year, I don't see why we wouldn't be able to get this one. That means no Satan's Sleigh Ride back from West Des Moines. Thank God.
And of course ND will be televised on the moon. Post game showers are regional coverage.
I just opened up an old newspaper set my foot down on it and lightly sanded my leg with sandpaper...it's really amazing, wish i could send you a photo. I feel like I'm at the beach...only it's not sand sifting through my fingers! haha
Grace...it's a secret, but I like Chuck E Cheese pizza, the perfect little rounds of fake burger on the beef pizza, I'm not kidding!...maybe it reminds me of great birthday parties, the kids dancing on stage with the characters, and we were very happy to buy more tokens with that pitcher of beer!
My favorite thing about Chuck E. Cheese used to be the blacklight room with fuzzy posters inside. But that was back when it was Showbiz Pizza. And the eighties.
I would like to go to Chuck E Cheese some time this century to see how it's changed. Have the mechanical animals been replaced with holograms or sophisticated I, Robot technology? If not, it's only a matter of time.
Des, you said you like my birthday pic because it looks like I am showing my teeth in agression rather than smiling. Let me tell you why I looked that way: I was ticked that my husband left me and the baby (being dramatic) to drive all the way to the Des Moines area to watch the Huskers play some podunk probably div. III football team. This would be OK except for the fact that his excursion prevented me from from watching ND play a spectacualr game against a real team - Michigan. So this year, we're giong to have to find those river people to babysit if he wants to go because I am not missing out this time.
The bitterness continues: Scott just called from the Four Seasons San Francisco where he gets to stay because of Bobblehead Condie. He was going on and on about how comfy the bed was. I am so annoyed. I told him it wasn't fair to which he replies, "I'm working!" And he will log in a lot of hours, the overtime will be nice, but I am still annoyed.
Such bitterness Grasshopper... "Let the pain flow out of your heart as water flows down stream." It is only then that you will know true peace of mind.
Emily, why can't you go and use the room/pool/lounge, etc while Scott does his work?...didn't you visit Des once at the Four Seasons in LA?...get up there and get me one of those white robes!
Emily, I think ND played Pitt that year. And as far as I can remember, they killed them. While in Lincoln, the Huskers were having a hard fought contest with the Division II Maine Blackbears. It was a good thing Scott was in West Des Moines to cheer them on ;)
The GTech/ND game time has yet to be determined. Antoher night game would be nice.
Regardless, it's a good thing Jude is old enough to watch himself this year.
Emily...you would have to keep Jude "under wraps", you wouldn't want him to hit Condie and then Scott would have to arrest him! But, why isn't she over in the middle east...is she brokering Paris' jail term?

(loudly)at the ball game as the sun was setting upon my face, "Mom, you have a mustache."
Nance, next you'll be borrowing his "nut cup"!! haha
That's what the pitchers of beer are for. NEVER go to a Chuck E. Cheese that doesn't have a liquor license!
"I webbed you. That means you got the apartment."
Can't wait for football!
Happy Birthday Braden!!
Happy birthday Braden!
Happy Birthday Braden!
"Let the pain flow out of your heart as water flows down stream."
It is only then that you will know true peace of mind.
Good Morning Des!
Congratulations, Des! We're so proud of you! :-)
