Bad Mom, bad wife.

Sunday while in the back yard playing wiffle ball with the girls: Mary pitched the ball to me and actually got it across the non-existant plate. I hit it and the ball beaned my baby in the mouth. The game was over.

Last night we had warm, brown food for dinner. Beef tips and carrots with lots of thick gravy over (mashed potatoes for Randy and me, gluten free noodles for the girls). In the absence of milk, I added real butter and mayo to the potatoes. They were delicious. We now need to drink a gallon of red wine to make up for the cholesterol in the previously fat-free potatoes. By the way, mayo in potatoes is really good.

WHAT IS JOE'S FOOTBALL SCHEDULE? WE'D LIKE TO MAKE A GAME

Anonymous said...

By the way, I do not understand how Dad's head bump could be referred to as a fulcrum...

I thought it had to do with leverage, like where the scissors met, or where the board is placed on a rock so the goat on the other end can go flying, etc.

Please explain.

Anonymous said...

a lever rests on a fulcrum. dads bump would be the fulcrum for the lever that moved mountains!

Anonymous said...

oops, yeah, make that move mountains, ye scurvy dog.

Anonymous said...

I still don't know why falling can be likened to a fulcrum.

Anonymous said...

He discovered that he uses his head as a fulcrum when he flips over in bed and now he can't because it hurts. You scrofulous canines.

Hey, Joe, did you get that hot car from the car magazine? No? Well, do you get to drive anywhere you want now? No? Well, um, happy birthday!

Anonymous said...

Last night, I was eating some chips and I noticed some crumbs on the coffee table. I licked my pointer and dabbed them up. They turned out to be dirt from my child's shoe that had been left there earlier. Does that make ME a, "foolcrumb?"

It's not Joe 4's Birthday. His Birthday is on November 28th.

Then email your senators (and congressman, for that matter)and tell them that you want them to pass the legislation mandating that prisoners of war (no matter what this government chooses to call them) NOT be tortured. It comes up this week. What has our country become?

Dad and Mom just called from the Lantern House on Loch Dern. He explained the turning in bed / head as fulcrum point issue to me.

The Lantern House / Loch Dern combo is the prettiest place in the world. Not a majestic as the Cliffs of Mohr or amazing as the passage tomb, but pretty.

The prettiest church in the world just might be that little chapel next to that girl's school... it had angel downspouts.

I agree with Bill O'Reilly's feelings about what some people are calling, "torture," that he expressed on his show yesterday. Did anyone watch? I kind of think we have to fight fire with fire-because you can't win a war when both sides are not playing by the same rules. Now, keep in mind I am NOT suggesting that we lose ALL sense of civility-but, maybe we should lose some?!

P. Rose said...

You have to be certain they did what you think they did, don't you think, before you perform any torturous acts? And, how can you be sure? I did not watch his show.

HI!

I am in my new apt. The cable/internet guy came today and hooked both up. He arrived the exact same time the movers arrived with our furniture. We moved into this place a week ago with no furniture except an air mattress. Then, the next day, Scott conveniently left for NY for a few weeks, leaving me with no furniture, no car and a 19month old. Anyway, our car arrived on Friday and I promptly strapped in Jude and headed to Target in an unregistered car to buy a cheap TV and rabbit ears to watch the ND/Michigan game. What a waste. Now I am sitting here, with a million boxes on the proch and I don't want to even start. Ugh!

someone please feel sorry for me!

Anonymous said...

I feel for you too...that's a bummer. Poor Emily.

Anonymous said...

The list of, "torturous," acts were not like bamboo shoots under the nails...severe beatings...or, rape. They were like sleep deprivation...bright lights, loud music...that kind of stuff. And, they would have to be approved by the President each time. I'm just thinking that we play by very specific rules (a good thing...usually) and they do whatever they want and to whomever they want to. Not sure we'll get anywhere, with them, if we play by, "our," rules and they don't play by any. Yah know?

Anonymous said...

right, but in the secret cia sponsored prisons in other countries how can we know what levels of torture are in place?

Anonymous said...

I dunno.

P. Rose said...

Soo, should we disallow americans in the prison system awaiting court any sleep and no darkness, until they break and admit they are guilty? Just forgo innocent until proven?

P. Rose said...

I claim the best room at home Thanksgiving and CHristmas this year. No trespassing!!

Ed X said...

What are you going to be for Halloween?

Anonymous said...

Maybe, I'm wrong...but, I think that (7:33am post) is different. I, absolutley, understand your point of view and the problems mine could create. I don't know that anyone has the perfect solution or the, "right," answer.

I don't think we can protect the innocent when if we found Osama (sp?) but, it's the third Wednesday of the month and he's wearing a yellow shirt standing in a cemetary...we cannot take him out. BUT, if he and his peeps find a group of Americans praying in a church...they don't give a damn...they would kill us in a heart beat.

It's kinda like a football game. Yah can't send one team out playing by a rule book and an umpire enforcing their every move...and, another team can go out there and do whatever they want...and, hope for a good and fair result. Yah know?

These people want to kill us...themselves and anyone else that gets in the way of their cause. Their nuts. Not saying that I think it's awesome for us to play a little dirty...but, what's the alternative?

As you may know, I am not particularly politically savvy...but, this is my very basic feelings on such a scary topic.

Keep in mind, that I am against abortion and the death penalty...yet, still have this view.

Anonymous said...

It's not a matter of what the other guy does.

It's a matter of what we do. Who we are and what we stand for.

Think of how angering it is to recall how England extracted false confession from the Irish who may or may not have been involved in the IRA. They did not physically harm them in any way (not babmoo shoots under the fingernails, etc.) but what they did was still wrong. Do we want to be like that?

Anonymous said...

I, absolutely, understand your point of view. It's a serious thing to consider and very scary.

Anonymous said...

Doesn't mean it's right. Of course some times it works. Sometimes the death penalty kills the right person. SOmetimes their innocent. But it's kind of too late.

Anonymous said...

I **think** whatever (almost) we have to do to get information from our prisoners, aside from physical violence/injury, we should do in order to save thousands of innocent lives (not just Americans). I may be naive :-)...but, I am fairly confident that our Government does not waste its time interrogating people that are just common folk and do not have information that can help us end this War. Am I way off base? It's okay to tell me why you think I am. I, too, am just trying to better understand what is going on.

Anonymous said...

My 2 cents on the Death Penalty. :-)

I do not agree with the Death Penalty. I don't think that we should decide who lives and who does not. We as a society should bear the burden of housing these people for the rest of their lives. If we don't like that...than, we should volunteer our time more with young children.

If we ever did capture BinLaden it would be interesting to see what pain level he could endure...he might give it up fast, I don't think of him as a tough guy physically, just a spoiled rich kid, now a murderous radical. We could make him trip on his robe and fall down flights of stairs,etc...make him look silly.

Only because someone asked, Joe4's JV games are:
Mon. 9/25 Home vs. Mason City Newman 6:30 pm
Mon. 10/2 at Ft. Dodge St. Edmonds 4:30 pm
Mon. 10/16 Home vs. Clarion-Goldfield 5:00 pm

Joe may or may not play much varsity, but he will play, to some extent in every game. The remaining varsity schedule (all games at 7:30) is:
9/22 at West Hancock (Britt), the #1 team in the State
9/29 Home vs. North Central THis oughta be a pretty good wipeout game for Garrigan
10/6 at Northwood-Kensett. Tough road game vs perennially state qualifying team.
10/13 Home vs. SCMT. I don't know what SCMT is, I bet they stink.
10/20 at Graettinger-Terrill. Once proud program fallen into mediocrity.
10/27 Home vs West Bend-Mallard. WBM was 2nd in State last year, has maybe 5 state championships, lost a close game to Northwood Kensett a week ago. This and the Britt game (and NK) should determine state qualifiers and definitely establishes local bragging rights.

Emily, You should have just gone to the nearest sports bar, ordered fries for Jude, and left after the first f@#$%^%$ quarter!

How can anyone be for the death penalty? Aside from all the moral arguments, they sometimes execute people not guilty of the crime. That's enough for me and I frankly don't see a valid contrary argument.
I have not turned my heat on yet either.
Boy-for a smart guy the Pope sure stuck his foot in his mouth.

We always have too much stuff.

Last time we moved, I found myself unwrapping 1/2 full bubble containers asking myself... why was this not in the garbage?

On a more serious note... on the way to work this morning, a block and a half from the school and in full site of all children and etc. coming in: about 9 squad cars, news crew and a dead body. A pedestrian had been hit by a car. Hearing lots of rumors, but I think it may have been a newspaper carrier.

When we moved Sara Kollasch helped. She was carrying a super duper heavy box and peeked inside. She exclaimed, "Rocks! Nance, you're moving...rocks!" :-<> I told her they were my favorites. :-)

I agree with JoeIII about the death penalty and the stupid remarks the Pope made. I agree with Nance's assessment of Joe IV.

As far as torturing goes, I think bright lights and a barking, snarling dog are acceptable, but not tattoos meant to shame. Sounds a bit like Nazis to me, the tattoo thing. And Tom is right about the sometimes brutal behaviour used by local law enforcement. I guess the question is: when is it a tough interrogation and when is it considered torture? We cannot use the argument that others don't play by the rules, so why should we because, simply put, two wrongs don't make a right. We should not sink to barbaric behaviour, further arming those who hate us, but of course we have to come up with a smarter, better way to get the intelligence we need. You younguns should study Farsi or something and you could have an illustrious, although dangerous career with the CIA

P. Rose said...

I think the pope was stupid in his comments but not intentionally so. Just an unwise use of an example in the political climate we live in.

How do you feel about this divisive political issue? Thank God I'm in lowly Ramsey county...

I don't think there is any example of public funding of a sports complex where the money could not have been spent on more important issues than sports. No matter the city, you can't tell me they don't need libraries or better teacher pay or inner city economic development or more school support of at risk children or.....

That being said, major league sports are big part of some cities national identity. Indianapolis was barely on the national radar, except on memorial day weekend, before the colts showed up. Without the twins and vikings, Minneapolis becomes irrelevant to many people on a national level. Silly but true. I know there are all sorts of studies on how much a franchise means to a city economically, but I don't know if that money ever finds it's way back libraries, etc...

No word on the job and Erin is not pregnant. right honey?

Although there is a strong correlation between Erin's fertility and my job moves, so maybe we should bake up another critter.

Lots of people have been rounded up in sweeps and then subjected to what we are calling "soft" torture who had nothing to do with terrorism, at least until they came into contact with the tender mercies of our interrogators. There is also the question of what that atmosphere of dirty brutality does to our people. What did Abu Graib do to the soldiers who were stationed there? What kind of people do we want to be? Remember how our soldiers were treated in Viet Nam when captured? What right will we ever have again to complain about the treatment of our soldiers? It may be that we might someday need some rogue maverick to obtain specific information in a specific situation to keep us all safe. It shouldn't be our president or our policy.
I think if we ever capture bin Laden we should keep him on public display. He has kind of a high, silly voice and everyone could make fun of him.
I agree that all the hoopla about what the pope quoted is political opportunism by radicals whipping up frenzy. I also think he should have known better. What was he thinking?

Anonymous said...

Do you think that making prisoners, "uncomfortable," would be too much? I'm not sure what I think anymore...I'm totally just wondering. :-)

Anonymous said...

I think making people contort into uncomfortable positions naked and stay there for hours is more than uncomfortable. It is cruel and brutal. It is obviously not a tactic that will yield up immediately needed information, so it becomes cruelty for cruelty's sake. This is going to come back on us, believe me.
On a lighter (scarier) note, did anyone else see the news segment about the city in England where not only do they have cameras on every street corner, but loudspeakers that yell at the people, as is: "Lady in the brown coat! Would you please pick up that rubbish you just threw on the ground and put it in the rubbish bin on the corner?" In an English accent, of course. Our brave new world is here.

Em, I feel for ya. Just unpack two boxes a day, before lunch, then do whatever you want all afternoon. Go on long drives with Jude, scoping out the area. Eat at tiny little family-owned Mexican joints. Find the nearest state park and figure out where the movie theater, mall, grocery store, dry cleaner's, and bank atm's are. Have fun. Eat ice cream with Jude or take him to the beach.

Pat - I understand. Has anybody heard about this Hedge Fund Amaranth? Lost $5 Billion in Nat Gas trades (which is more then Long Term Capital Management lost) in just over a month and is making my life hell.

Anonymous said...

Ed, Sorry your life is hell. I don't even know what you're talking about though. DOn't know what a hedge fund is.

Joe, I'm hungry too eventhough I just ate two frozen Whitecastles and some broccoli. I'm addicted to them. The burgers, not the broccoli.

Grace, thanks for the advice. Jude and I are trying to entertain ourselves. I signed us up for some classes at the community center. This morning we had edible art. What a mess. In October we start Mommy and Me swimming and some sort of dance, clap, and march class. We also joined 24 hour fitess because it's 2 blocks form our house and I can drop Jude off at their KIDS CLUB while I workout for just $3. HE loves it and it gives me a break from him and a chance to workout. So, all in all, we're keeping busy.

Mary, have fun tonight with Mom and Dad and Molly, Brian and the girls. Cathy, you must have class?

Pat, you're probably tired because of the climate change. Lots of people get tired in the fall. At least that's what they say in Skopje.

How's everyone else doing? Joe's hungry, Pat's tired, Ed's life is hell and I'm doing pretty good. Pretty pretty pretty good if you watch Larry David.

I'm pretty pretty pretty good, too, my class got canceled! But I'm not going to do homework, I'm going to look for football tickets.

Is anyone going tothe ISU/Nebraska game or ISU/UNI?

Erin, your dream house in Omaha is still for sale! Just dropped to $274,000. Maybe Jim could commute..he could listen to the John Tesh show while he drives!

Seriously, do they have frozen Whitecasltes at HY-Vee? If not, request that they order some. OR on your next trip to Omaha, buy them on your way out of town and pack them in a cooler under a bunch of ice. They should make the trip. They're a little pricey. $4.50 for six and you basically have to eat the whole box to get full and they are very bad for you, 17 grams of fat in two burgers. But oh so tasty. Just pop em in the microwave and dip em in ketchup. I think I need to eat some more.
