One of my close friends works at Hamline, in a different department. You may have met her, she came to my wedding. Her name is Annette McNamara. She is sick of the kitchen being a mess in her office and came up wtih this sign. I think it is brilliant.
If you are leaving your dishes in the sink, please complete the following brief survey:
I am leaving my dishes in the sink because:
a. I am just too busy to do them myself.
b. I usually don’t have to wash my own dishes; I’m not sure how.
c. I have a fatigue disorder. It was all I could do to even get my dirty dishes into the kitchen, much less wash them.
d. I am so damm lazy.

Yes, if a faucet, sink, microwave, and bathroom paper towel dispenser per 100 employees constitute living high on the hog, then yes it is true. Guilty.
And fridge. I forgot the fridge.
A faucet and a sink. Brilliant!
Emily-did you and Scott ever buy one of those little Weber grills?
Hey Joe K., so THAT is where Mike was!
Hi.
Jude is sick, I mean really sick, for the first time. This is the scariest thing I've ever dealt with. He had had a cough and runny nose for a week, but then his temp was 103.9 last night accompanied by diarrhea that shoots right through his diaper and vommiting amounts that seem to excede his body weight. He seems a little better this morning. His temp is down to 101, he ate some rice cereal and he's sleeping. I keep trying to push the fluids. Any advice? We aren't to confident in our Macedonian pediatrician, Dr. Oliver. It's nothing personal, we're just not confident in Macedonian health care in general. They believe you get sick from drinking cold drinks and a draft is deadly.
Yikes, Emily! Let us know how he's doing! How scary.
Today in St. Paul it is 6 degrees below zero with strong winds.
Hi Emily...It sounds like he's getting better. Did Doc Oliver prescribe anything!... Mom and Dad occasionally eat at a small restaurant where one of the owners "wears" her baby while waiting tables and hostessing...they've become friends after learning that the baby's name is Mia and her birthday is the same as Mia Richardson! I think Dad said Feb. 17 or 18...so that means it's Jude's 1st birthday as well...so Happy First Birthday to Jude and Mia! I hope he feels better:)
Just keep giving him little drinks and let him sleep and cuddle. 103.9 is scary but it's not unusual for a little guy. There might not be any medicine that helps anyway. His fever might go up in the evening again. What a way to spend your first birthday - just like your 21st!
I have a whole little house for just me and one other part-time employee. On class nights, I take a little nap on the couch about 4:30 or so before I head over to Creighton. We have a pool table in the basement because the teen group used to meet here. This is why church costs so much.
We always leave dishes in the sink except on Monday (Baptism class meets here at 6:30) and on Tuesday (Alcoholics Anonymous. They drink all the coffee.)
That "me again" was not m.e...that's my moniker...by the way, why haven't we heard from Monicer?
It's m.e. again, Just a little news...Desmond leaves for Berlin on Saturday to make a Samsung cell phone commercial, he'll be there for 10 days. He's had a great year for travel! For Creighton fans...they will be on ESPN Sat. night at 11:00 vs. Fresno State, however, now Josh Dotzler is out, they've had so many injuries. It's SOOO cold here, -10 wind chill...wish I was in Florida!
hey m.e.
what commercials has Desmond done lately. I am surrounded by the advertising/creative dept here at work and I like to brag on my nephew.
Emily~
Yeah, temps, usually, get high around 4pm and 5pm...if they're gonna. If he refuses his bottle...put him in his highchair with a popsicle...pedialite or any other. I would NOT use a JUICE popsicle...'cuz that will not help the diarrhea. Say, bananas are good for loose stools. I would avoid a bath...if his fever is still really high. You wouldn't want to create a, "chill." If you do bathe him...ensure tepid water and a warm room. Loose cotton clothing is important. A sheet...not, a blanket would be preferred.
Eli and Liam are fever kids. When they get sick...they fever. My nurse always amazes at how high it becomes when they get sick. Last year, Eli had a fever of 104.5! Scary.
Try not to worry. Just watch for serious sympotoms such as lethargy (more than just tired) and other behaviors that don't, "feel," right, to you, as his Mother. You really WILL know if things aren't, "right."
Okay, that's MY two cents. Others may disagree...and, I'm cool with that. (smile)
Love, Nance.
I leave dishes in my sink alla time. what's the big deal?
graham crackers are good for babies with diarrhea too because of the fiber.
I leave dishes in the sink even though I have a dishwasher. My answer to "why" is all of the above. Also, the dishwasher has to be emptied to be used as a receptacle and therein lies the rub. And, let's not forget "soaking!"
Yes. Dishes in the sink. But is it not worse when you are trying to get water or wash your own dishes and someone else's dishes are blocking the way and they've been there for a couple days and no one claims them? And maybe they have crusty tuna salad on them or something? Kitchens in which no one is responsible always get gross.
GROSS. It's different at home.
Em, I know it's scary when they get fevers that high. Especially at night. Just keep pushing the fluids. He'll get through it.
Peter also is sick. He threw up no less thatn 6 times last night and then sat on the toilet all day. Tom didn't go to school at all this week. Lavelles will get it next. I think it's the bird flu.
Monica
Start using paper plates.
I say that unattended dishes may be thrown away. Screw 'em!
Em-
Do you have access to baby tylenol? that, alternated with baby Motrin, if you can get it, helps with the fever as well as the achiness. Do NOT use aspirin for babies. You probably already know that. He probably has no appetite but if he's cranky and fussy that's better than extreme lethargy. It's okay to undress him down to a diaper to help keep the fever down, and use a cool wet washcloth on his face and torso, but put a t-shirt back on him before he gets chilled. Does he have a rash? Like all the moms are saying, push fluids and if you don't have pedialyte mix water with juice in his cup and also make ice out of it for him to suck on. Popsickles really help cool 'em down. Happy Birthday to Jude. Poor kid.
At my office everything unclaimed in the fridge (or sink) gets thrown out every Friday.
at work we have a toy tank that we place in the cube of whoever 'tanked' the network last. maybe you should have a crusty pot to put in the cube of whoever is leaving their dishes out?
I went with the embassy nurse to the children's hospital to get some lab work done on Jude because the State Dept. Regional Medical Doctor (stationed in Belgrade) wanted it done. Anyway, the point is, it was so scary. It was like some terrible movie from the 30's set in a grim orphanage or something. They put us in a room with 8 little cribs lining the walls, four on each side, while we waited to get Judes finger pricked. Thank God that was all we were there for. The sheets on the cribs were dirty, some of the staff looked just like what you would picture from an old, humorless Eastern bloc nurse, others looked fine. There was a little boy about the same age as Jude in the room with us who needed to be hooked to an IV because he was dehydrated and there were 4 nurses huddled around him and they sent his mom out of the room. The couldn't get the vein and they stuck him eight times and the poor kid was screaming at the top of his lungs. It was awful. I asked our doctor to check Jude's ears, but he said the person who does that was on vacation. We were in three different rooms the entire time we were there and I never saw a sink, so I never saw anyone wash hands, and of course no one had gloves. Anyway, Dr. Oliver prescribed an antibiotic. So, the State Dept. process is the Embassy nurse calls the State Dept. doctor in Belgrade and tells him the results of the blood work and what the local doctor said. The nurse says this is the part she hates because she always gets in a fight with him, maybe because she is Macedonian and usually defends the local doctors. Then he makes his own assertion/diagnosis. The Dept. doctor didn't want to use antibiotics, which is fine. I know that antibiotics are over prescribed, especially in this part of the world. So, that's our story. His fever went up again last night, as anticipated, but not as high. He has stopped puking and no more diarrhea.
As for dirty dishes in the sink, again, you could move to a country where you could pay someone peanuts to wash them, but then if you need to use the local medical facilities it's maybe not worth it.
Emily...what a day you guys had! Sounds like Jude is getting better, though! It's like the "too many cooks in the kitchen"...scenario. What an uncomfortable situation to be in...local doctors and nurses, then long distance calling for another diagnosis! Hopefully, Jude can have his cake and eat it too, tomorrow!
Good God, I can't believe the doctor wouldn't look at his ears. Medical care doesn't get any easier than that. What a terrible situation to be in. Sounds like he is improving though. When do you guys leave there.
Don't let him play with any more chicken heads.
Monica
Emily that sounds truly hellish. I am sorry.
At least he's getting better.
Over here in St. Paul things are looking up. We've warmed up to nine degrees below zero.
Em, how is Jude today?
Pat, we're -10 right now in Madison according to the weather channel. Expected high of 2.
It was 16 below here when I walked out to get the paper.
Monica
YIkes.
It was about 60 here in Skopje. Jude is feeling better, no fever, so we took him out for a walk along a lovely trash- filled canal by our house. TOday was a really beautiful day, sorry to rub it in. It hasn't been this warm since the beginning of November.
And Joe, no we never did get one of those little grills. I am not sure why. We talked about it a lot.
Pat, we have a goal for you!! Ryan and I watched "Meet the Fockers" last night and we think your goal should be to train your cat to use the toilet and flush. Barbara Streisand and Dustin Hoffman are brilliant.
Emily, sounds like Jude's better. A little fresh air always helps.
good to hear about jude.
it's a balmy -5 out here, i'm going to follow my cats lead and take me a nap.
We had 21 below last night, and our house has finally reached a balmy 62 degrees. That seems to be the best it can do, since the heat miser turns the heat to 59 at night. I came into work to get warm.
Did everyone pick up their powerball ticket? I just ventured out and got mine.
Way to heal...Jude! Awesome. (smile)
Pat~
Mr. miser shmiser...go ahead and turn up the heat! What's he gonna do? 59 or 62...aint't gonna make a big difference.
Oh, hey! They mentioned the BIG CHEETO on, "Talk Soup," last night...of course no mention of me...or, Sarah's. Oh well.
Our house won't warm past about 65 in the downstairs but it's warmer upstairs, so we took naps today instead of working on research papers or taxes as we planned. Tomorrow's another day.
We took Molly & family to the airport today at 5:30 AM to catch a plane for Puerto Vallarta (Brian's mom's boyfriend has a condo timeshare there and she ggot everyone tickets for Christmas) and Molly called us about 11:30 and said they boarded and waited a long time and then deplaned because it was so cold the windsheild cracked when they fired up the de-icers. So they took off at 2:00 for Salt Lake City where they will be put up in a hotel and fly to Mexico tomorrow and get there about 7:00 PM. We have their winter coats, so I hope the shuttle's warmed up. Anyway, did you ever hear of the windshield cracking? They lose about a day and a half of beach time, but it could be worse - like the windshield blowing out at 10,000 feet.
Tom should run for office.
Pat, the heat miser does that at our house too. It was 2pm before it reached the daytime setting. The basement is like a sauna though. The rest of the house freezing. I'm so jealous of Molly.
Emily, the weird thing is it was 65 here on Tuesday. No wonder all my kids are sick.
Monica
I got two tickets. Thus doubling my chance of winning. I'll take everyong to Puerta Vallerta if I win.
I heard that your chances of getting killed driving to and from the lottery ticket store are greater than your chances of winning the lottery. It was on TV so it must be true. If Stevo wins, he's giving half away and then giving everyone in both our families a million dollars, so get ready.
Yeah Steve!
You should give us twenty thousand a year, year after year, so we don't have to pay taxes on it. But I'd gladly take the Million too.
I think it's 22,ooo now. that extra 2000 going toward an extra vacation.
