So frustrating. Eli and I are late to mass yesterday (Nance and Liam went Saturday) and our 1030 mass is overflowing. We ended up having to to stand in the vestibule.
The priest usually gives a good homily. Does a good job of not getting too abstract. Uses examples in his daily life so it is all pretty pertinent.
Problem is, he's a soft talker. There was a theme to his homily underscored by a mantra of sorts. So several times he said "Forgivness is blah, blah - blah blah".
He would tail off softy at the end so you couldn't understand it. He said it at least 12-15 times. I mean if I'm going to drag myself out of bed make sure I hear your message.
Now I'm not sure I can forgive him for being a soft talker. A qaundry.
Many thanks to Cathy, Catie & Sean! Cathy was my Tzarina of the Kitchen for the Tour of Trees fundraiser on Saturday. Sean and Catie her right and left hands (although Emma kind of monopolized Sean) She made tons of perfect bite sized morsels for the throngs to enjoy.
Now I wanna have a tid bit party with her. The food was charming.
It wasn't a matter of getting out of bed in time. It was a matter of "uh-oh, I forgot - my low gas light has been on for a while. I need to stop and get gas." Our suburb disallows the construction of gas stations on our side of the freeway. We literally have to go out of our way to get gas.
And, I hold no resentment for soft talkers. I was being tongue-in-cheek, whoever you are.
We shopped last night for our church's Caring Tree recipients last night. You know....you basically buy anonymous gifts for disadvantaged kids. You would think it would make you feel all warm and good about Christmas but it kind of bummed me out. Like I told Nance, "Can you imagine being a kid and having to rely on the kindness of strangers just so you can get some new clothes for Christmas?"
Finding donors to buy presents for the kids here is one of my jobs.
I could give you tons of sobering stories.
We have children who purposly break items so that their mom s boyfriend doesn't take it to sell.
Some of the children have no contact with ANY families (no aunts, uncles, grandparents to come gather them in for the day) and so have no one with whom to celebrate on Christmas Day.
"We have children who purposly break items so that their mom s boyfriend doesn't take it to sell."
I'm sure it's not just the men who are doing wrong towards these kids. Just saying that men often are cast as the primary wrong-doers when often times the women are just as bad or worse.
So there!!
We debated whether or not to buy the clothes as requested. I mean, so often there is free clothing available to kids, be it hand me downs or from a charity. But we decided to play it safe and got them a nice assortment of stuff. I mean if it's December and it says they need/want a jacket they probably will put it to good use.
Saying their mom's boyfriend will take a kids things or hit the kids, etc. automatically incriminates the mother as well as her paramour.
The children here often wish their mother (or father could be like say, me or you or someone else... but they do not want me or you or someone else... they way their parent to be a good parent.
Tom, you made the right choice - simply from years of shopping used I can tell you that nice warm coats and school or play clothes that are in good shape are in short supply, and kids love to get something cool that is all theirs.
So last night I made one of the best tasting things ever....Taco Meat.
We were out of store bought seasoning to make it (they all are marginal anyway but they are convenient) but the meal was otherwise prepared.
So I looked at what we had and here is what I seasoned the meat with. It was amazing and will never be replicated exactly again. But, trying to get there again can be fun.
Goulash Cream (Squeezable tube of paprika cream that Nance's Hungarian fried left here) Powdered Hungarian Paprika Soy Sauce Sriracha Sauce Red Pepper Flakes Onion Powder Garlic Powder Cumin Oregano Black Pepper
Sounds really good. I can guarantee I would love it and the girls would excuse themselves from the table.
Are we having spaghetti for Christmas dinner? Do we need tiramisu with that? What do peole want to have? Red cake? fudge? Lots of beverage? Something crunchy and healthy?
Is it strange that Sam insists on being shirtless while the rest of us are in long sleeves? He also sleeps with no covers on him and always says he is hot.
I started to read that article, Pat but stopped out of disinterest when they began to speak about how the poor, immigrant Irish disassociated themselves from the free blacks by disallowing them in unions and otherwise suppressing them.
I am kind of tired of the term "old white men". It is used to deride a culture that saved the world from fascism. It was old white men that gave us the freedoms and liberties we enjoy today.
So much of the media is fast to pigeon-hole anyone of this demographic as the cause of all our problems. Nonsense.
I'm not saying that was where the article was going but it felt that way. I'm tired of it.
You shut yourself off so fast. The article was self indicting, using the Irish immigrant experience as a corollary. I don't know if he is right or not but it's thoughtfully written and interesting.
Happy Birthday, Randy!!! Best meal you've had in months??? Yes, being hot is normal...I am. I like Sundays on tacos. We are staying at the AmericInn...see y'all in 11 days! ~Nance
Manny had a birthday party yesterday for a girl in his class. It was in their house and the invite said they'd have a petting zoo. I expected bunnies and such. They had, in their basement, a macaw and another talking parrot. I little fox, a hedgehog, a skunk, a boa constrictor, a tortoise, some animal I didnt' know,an alligator (about 6 feet long), and a mature lynx. They all came out of their cages and it made me nervous with a bunch of screaming kids.
I've never listed to the Brian Kilmeade radio show on Fox Radio. I am now. He is talking about Obama and his talk on the Conneticut shooting.
He is giving Obama high praise and saying we need to do things differently in regard to gun control.
I am surprised he is being as such.
On the other hand I was watching that stupid show Melissa Harris Perry (or something like that) on MSNBC the other day. She had the usual suspects on. One of them, some black guy, said,"When a tragic set of circumstances like this occurs in a white bread community like Newtown we are all in shock. Things like that should not happen in that kind of town. When we say this we are inferring that when it happens in a less affluent or a minority community, that it is somewhat expected and accepted."

Get out of bed on time and you don't have to resent him for your lateness

I think if a kid asks for a jacket it probably means he's wearing a hoodie, if anything, when it's below freezing.

Sunday is a good day for tacos.
This is an interesting article. It - among other things - compares African immigration (recent) to Irish immigration (past).

Emily I was like that as a kid. I remember being so hot at night in the middle of winter. I wish I could say the same for now.
