Hi, We went to Paddy Mac's, an Irish restaurant about 20 minutes from here. It's often quite loud and we were hoping a Thursday night would not be too bad, but the place was full of people and noise. It is owned by an Irish-American named Ken Wade who knows good Irish music but every time we have gone there and they have music it is just terrible! Last night was no exception. But the menu is very good and the food is also really good. Ken recognized us and came to our table to greet us and he kissed Mom on the forehead. When we walked in I noticed that one of the specials was corned beef and cabbage, which I've had there before, so I decided to get it. Mom decided to get shepherd's pie. Then the waitress told us that one item that was not on the specials menu was rack of lamb with roasted potato wedges and fresh green beans. We both decided to get that. It was really scrumptious. Mom had a couple glasses of wine and I had Powers and water and then some Smithwick's. This place also serves mini desserts so Mom selected fudge cake with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup and I had NY cheesecake. The portions are quite small, as is the cost ($1.75), but it is just enough to satisfy the sweet tooth. So it was a very enjoyable evening. Love, Dad
Happy Birtday Dad! I hope you and Mom are living the high life at Boca Del Vista.
Hooray for you, Ed. I knew you liked you place. Glad you got it.
I went snowboarding with the kids this last weekend. I've never tried this. I'm feeling like I've been hit by a bus. Both because of the crashes and the heavy use of atrophied muscles.
I will keep trying until I get it down. I don't want to be a dare devil. I just want to be able to gracefully carve my way down a moderate hill.
While standing in line to go up the hill on another ill fated run an instructor was behind me with some kids that couldn't have been much more than 5 years old. She asked me what an "older" gentleman like me was doing trying to learn the sport. I explained it was something my kids love to do and I was hoping to be able to do it with them.
She was surprised I had chosen snowboarding over skis. I explained I felt it would be easier to control one appendage (the board) rather than 2. She said, "no way - I would rather have 2 under me".
Some guys about my age at the top of the hill expressed the same surprise.
I'll keep trying. It can't be that hard. Age is just a number.
It's easier getting off the ski lifts without skis! I guess that would be a benefit...the first time we skied there was a 99 year old man in our group who was learning, had never been on skis!
I highly recommend the movie "War Horse"...it's pretty great! Not for real young kids, though. It's 2 1/2 hours long.
Good blues bar downtown, the Slippery Noodle (oldest continuously open bar in Indiana or something like that), real good mexican place, El Sol, on east Washington, maybe 3500 east, I'm sure there's better but it's the best I've ever had. Lotsa hookers downtown, cheap too.
Mitt says that Seamus loved riding atop the car in that airtight case on family outings...I guess I have more of a problem with the Romneys naming their dog Seamus. That name would only appeal to those WASPs as an Irish worker dog, no respect! Gingrich is really using this Seamus story.
Before beginning the drive, Mitt Romney put Seamus, the family’s hulking Irish setter, in a dog carrier and attached it to the station wagon’s roof rack. He’d built a windshield for the carrier, to make the ride more comfortable for the dog. Then Romney put his boys on notice: He would be making predetermined stops for gas, and that was it. The ride was largely what you’d expect with five brothers, ages 13 and under, packed into a wagon they called the ”white whale.” As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. ”Dad!” he yelled. ”Gross!” A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who’d been riding on the roof in the wind for hours. As the rest of the boys joined in the howls of disgust, Romney coolly pulled off the highway and into a service station. There, he borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway. It was a tiny preview of a trait he would grow famous for in business: emotion-free crisis management.
If the dog is dripping feces he's obviously in distress. I get that lots of things have changed socially in regards to pets in the past thirty years. But 12 hours is just crazy. It bothers me.
Or if the dog just happened to crap like most dogs will crap anywhere at any given time. You can't say with definition that the dog's crapping had anything to do with distress.
With most dumb dogs you have to keep the windows rolled up in a moving car or they will jump out. I doubt the dog was "distressed". They are too stupid to be distressed about a situation like that.
It's all pretty silly.
Marines - I don't know. If I were in a situation like them and had just managed to kill someone who was out to kill me - given all the stresses of what they go through everyday - I might do the same. At the most these guys should just be censured. Verbally reprimanded and a note placed in their file.
I pretty much agree with Tom on this one. It's easy to sit here in comfy old USA and condemn these guys. Minor discipline for them and get the nco's to stop the filming in the future. I understand the "fodder for the enemy" thing, and there's some validity there, but that objection is based on strategy and politics, not morality. Morally, I have no problem with them doing this. Worse things were common in Vietnam and in every (that's every!) war. Goes with the territory. I just wouldn't have filmed it.
I understand that I can't understand what it's like to be at war. Thank goodness. But you can't give a slap on the wrist or stuff like this will keep happening. Its about how much of the Arab world views our soldiers. I also know many of the Taliban are doing awful horrific things. Many are just wanting to stay alive. Many of them have families who will hear about this.
Maybe our soldiers should be strapped to the roof of a car for 12 hours. That'll fix 'em.
Woo hoo!!! We just gave away tons of baby stuff, but I'm sure we have more we can give you. Do you still have any of your baby stuff? Congrats! Exciting news!
SO excited about grandchild #8! So glad Molly posted it - I thought my head was going to explode if I couldn't tell anyone soon.
Ed, congrats on buying your first home.
Sorry, but I think a good rule for civilized humans would be: Don't piss on people, maybe ESPECIALLY people you have just killed. I don't care who they are. Someone's mother, or son or wife or other innocent bystander is going to be further wounded by that gratuitous act of cruelty.
Heartland Child Development (where Molly works) is having a baby boom. Two other teachers besides Molly are pregnant. They're considering adding an infant room next school year just to keep the teachers.
Sweet Pea is a boy. When Jim was crawling around and the Farrells were visiting, Darlene would look at him crawling with his nightgown trailing behind him and she gave him the nickname "Sweetpea." It didn't stick. Dad
I read all the way to the end of the Popeye story and Sweet Pea is a boy (by the way, it's always spelled "Swee'Pea" in cartoon titles, etc.) I concur with the nickname idea. Make it so. Were I ever to get a tattoo, it would have to be an anchor on my skinny white forearm.
My friend Marie says that LSU QB Jarret Lee was supposed to graduate in December, but then won't until Spring, so the scholarship available to Kiel wasn't available till summer...plus how bad LSU looked in the Championship game, led Kiel to Notre Dame. You know that they are all about academics at LSU, so I'm REALLY glad Lee wants to graduate...haha...Kiel was touted as the best, highest ranked LSU recriut ever. Eat more grass Miles!!!
It's white. I hope it gets along with the black oven and the stainless dishwasher. You know, each appliance is special in its own way and, when you get right down to what really matters, they all run on standard current.
Went out this morning to take Jude and Sam to school and I haven't felt comfortably warm since. Even sitting on the couch under a big blanket with Finn on my lap hasn't warmed me.
We need a blog-wide contest (remember the limericks and haikus) To get us through to kickoff next September and so we've come up with a challenge: You must come up with a verse, or passage, suitable for a greeting card. The catch? The message has to be suitable for any kind of card. The greeting has to be useable for a sympathy card and to congratulate on a newborn, or a graduation, or a wedding, or a holiday, or any event where people send cards. It doesn't have to rhyme. Rules of grammar do not apply. Here's what we've come up with so far:
JOE4: On this unforgettable day, If there's anything I can do shoot a call my way.
BETTY: I send this card with regard.
JOE3: Life goes on, both happy and sad All of us together and the times we've had. Thinking of you.
OK-All of you think you're so smart and clever-have at it!
It's funny - I woke up this morning thinking we need a new writing contest. Way to go, Joe. Cynical yet wholesome. See how I did that without correct punctuation?
Jude's school has a sloppy Joe dinner and project fair on St. Joseph's day. The project is optional for K-4. But Jude has decided he wants to do a project on gravity. Great. Any ideas?
Em, google gravity projects for 1st graders. I found a couple. There was one for gravity free water that would be super easy although it could be messy. Monica
We can never know what life will bring It can make you cry or laugh or sing Through the journeys, great and small Family and friends share in it all With this card I'm trying to say That I am thinking of you today
We were so happy to find out about Molly's new surprise. Can't wait for August!
Anyone want to move into a small but cute house in Des Moines? Andy and I are putting our house up for sale this week! Time for an upgrade, although we do really, really love our house. It will probably take a long time to sell though, which is fine. So far we haven't found many houses we can see ourselves living in for long. Apparently there are no regular two story houses for sale in Des Moines that are not completely in shambles. Not even out of our price range. It feels like everything is 1.5 story, with just one or two bedrooms upstairs and one or two down. We don't want that. Someone write a good luck card for us.
Ellen, we had a hard time finding a true two story house too. Ours was one of the few that had three bedrooms on one level and we looked at over 70 houses. We debated putting the kids all together in the big master suite on the second level that many of the one and a half story houses have and have Scott and I take a smaller bedroom on the first floor. We were thinking then maybe when the kids were older we could trade. But luckily we finally found a house that we liked. Your current house is so so cute. It may sell faster than you think.
So Scott bought a wallpaper steamer over the weekend. They cost $18/day to rent. We have two rooms with wallpaper that has to come down. I was telling him to just rent one. But then he saw one on sale for $50. I'm sure it will be collecting dust in the basement for years and years to come. So if anyone needs to borrow one, let us know. As soon as we get the wallpaper down in the kids' bedrooms of course, and who knows when that will be. Now there will be no rush since we own the stupid machine.
Someday I'll borrow it, but not in the next couple of years.
Greeting card poems:
Sometimes life throws you a curveball, And sometimes a straight-ahead strike. If walking, or going down swinging I hope you end somewhere you like.
Not so good. Try this:
Life is full of surprises and challenges and things. A person like you rises On fearless gentle wings. I'm thinking of you always and hoping for the best of times and many good days, some better than the rest.
Congrats Ellen! Here's a great house...I think they're anxious to sell:1023 25th St. http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/1023-25th-St_Des-Moines_IA_50311_M85250-41446?cmid=1005208&source=web
I'm such a good mother and good cook. I actually just said, " hey, whining won't make the bagel bites cook any faster." Scott's out of town again. Grand Rapids. I wish he was here though because he says he knows it must be a special occasion if we are having bagel bites for dinner. Today's special occasion is that Finn learned how to climb out of his crib todayand took no nap . He can do it very quickly and silently.
Here is a link to pictures of our house: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jekub/6767184635/in/set-72157629044067889/
You'll be able to see it the cleanest it's been since we moved in. The photographer was here today, and the realtor should get it listed in the next few days. Monica, that house is right across from Joe's, but out of our price range. Mary, we saw that house online too, and will try to go see it sometime soon. We're considering Ankeny, which is a great town, but just so not what we are looking for. Hardly any houses built before 1985, very 'burbs. It does have great schools, friendly people, would be a little closer to Andy's work, and still close enough to downtown Des Moines.
In 2 hours I get to go to the tanning booth, Iowa law mandates you wait 24 hours. This will be my 3rd day, I'm hooked, it's the perfect way to feel good when it's like Stalag 13 outside.

Did you do anything special for your birthday?
Sounds like you and Mary had a great dinner!

Ohh, that sounds yummy. Sounds like it was a nice evening. Glad you got to go somewhere nice!

Sounds so good...I can't even buy lamb here in lamb country.
Happy Birthday, Dad! Sounds like you had a wonderful time!
So on Friday I bought my condo. Only took 7 months - but at least I don't have to move.
Yea! Congrats. Now you can do whatever you want to it.

Another beautiful day! But the temp is going to drop 50 degrees over the next two days. Brrr.
Joe 3, Scott's in Indianapolis. Anything he should try to do, see, or eat?
I hear Colt is pretty good...and it's on special right now!
I want to go to Paddy Macs.
Sounds like you two had a good time. Happy belated birthday!
Des
Scott's going to El Sol tonight. The hookers, even the cheap ones, cost too much.
The Romneys had a dog named Seamus too. They strapped him to the top of the car on a 12hour trip.
Mitt says that Seamus loved riding atop the car in that airtight case on family outings...I guess I have more of a problem with the Romneys naming their dog Seamus. That name would only appeal to those WASPs as an Irish worker dog, no respect! Gingrich is really using this Seamus story.
Here's the Gingrich AD that mentions Seamus, it's towards the end:

Sounds like farmers taking livestock to market. I'm sure they don't have a problem with this.
I don't care that Romney did this unless it was cold out.
Tom
If the dog is dripping feces he's obviously in distress. I get that lots of things have changed socially in regards to pets in the past thirty years. But 12 hours is just crazy. It bothers me.
P
I don't understand why everybody is making such a big deal about the marines that peed on the dead taliban.
What? You can kill them, but for god's sake, don't pee on them?
Seriously, Ed? I think it's disgusting, shameful, and awful. And antagonizing.
P
Maybe secretly pee on them...if that's what motivates, but they look like they're posing for the pic!
Or if the dog just happened to crap like most dogs will crap anywhere at any given time. You can't say with definition that the dog's crapping had anything to do with distress.

Tom
What about any soldier that is now captured? What about retaliation? To me it seems they are putting soldiers at risk.
P
I peed on my foot once.
These aren't honored foes or anything. These guys strap bombs onto women and kids and send them into marketplaces. They try to blow up airliners full of civilians. They destroyed ancient Buddhist sites. They kidnap cilvilians and behead them and post it on the internet in the name of religion. They stone women to death for lifting a skirt or daring to be individuals. Screw'em. They're trying to kill you, these pieces of crap, and you're gonna be worried about Geneva Convention niceties? The hell with them and I'd probably do it too. The hell with them. They went over there to kill these guys. Supposed to give them a Viking funeral or something? Worse things were common in Vietnam and in every (that's every!) war. Goes with the territory.
I just wouldn't have filmed it.
I understand that I can't understand what it's like to be at war. Thank goodness. But you can't give a slap on the wrist or stuff like this will keep happening. Its about how much of the Arab world views our soldiers. I also know many of the Taliban are doing awful horrific things. Many are just wanting to stay alive. Many of them have families who will hear about this.
Maybe our soldiers should be strapped to the roof of a car for 12 hours. That'll fix 'em.
P
Dana Loesch of CNN said she'd urinate on the soldiers, too.
P
Is this admin stupid or what? This may ruin our chance to negociate with the Taliban?! If it does these guys are heros.
Pete
Surprise! We're going to have one more!
Due mid-August, and truly a surprise!
Woo hoo!!! We just gave away tons of baby stuff, but I'm sure we have more we can give you. Do you still have any of your baby stuff? Congrats! Exciting news!

Anyone care to do a tally as to how many kids/grandkids/great grandkids this makes for Mom and Dad?

Just ask Dad how many!
Congrats Molly & Brian..wow!

Ham Gravy was Olive Oyl's first love...before Popeye...and Sweet Pea belonged to Popeye, she was left on Popeye's doorstep.
Just heard that the #1 QB prospect withdrew his commitment to LSU an will be joining the Irish!
I always thought Sweet Pea was a boy. Survey: Was Sweet Pea a girl or a boy?
I thought Sweet pea was a boy.
Monica
Sweet Pea is a boy. When Jim was crawling around and the Farrells were visiting, Darlene would look at him crawling with his nightgown trailing behind him and she gave him the nickname "Sweetpea." It didn't stick. Dad
Cute story...lets start calling him Sweetpea!
I want Sweetpea's name for Christmas!
My friend Marie will be so mad about the QB recruit, she was just boasting about him this weekend!
This is strictly confidential. I think Jim knows that Darlene used to call him Sweetpea and that he liked it. But he has never mentioned it. Dad
Just bought a used (like-new condition) Kitchenaid mixer with the standard attachments for $75. I've wanted one for years.
Swee'Pea answer your phone! just kidding
My friend Marie says that LSU QB Jarret Lee was supposed to graduate in December, but then won't until Spring, so the scholarship available to Kiel wasn't available till summer...plus how bad LSU looked in the Championship game, led Kiel to Notre Dame.

Awww, Frank shaves, Finn gets his hair cut....why now, the coldest time of the year? I don't even like to shave my legs when it's this cold.

As soon as we get the wallpaper down in the kids' bedrooms of course, and who knows when that will be. Now there will be no rush since we own the stupid machine.
Someday I'll borrow it, but not in the next couple of years.
Greeting card poems:
Sometimes life throws you a curveball,
And sometimes a straight-ahead strike.
If walking, or going down swinging
I hope you end somewhere you like.
Not so good. Try this:
Life is full of surprises
and challenges and things.
A person like you rises
On fearless gentle wings.
I'm thinking of you always
and hoping for the best
of times and many good days,
some better than the rest.
Congrats Ellen! Here's a great house...I think they're anxious to sell:1023 25th St.

oooh Ellen, I found one in Kingman-near Joe and Brianne. 3410 Kingman. It's with Caldwell Banker. I don't know your budget. But this is nice.

There are lots of great houses for sale in Council Bluffs ;-)
Wish I could be there,
I know how you feel
Emotional outbursts
are easily miscast.
Don't talk to anyone else
Until this day passes.
Happy national pie day. mmmmm, pie.
I'm such a good mother and good cook. I actually just said, " hey, whining won't make the bagel bites cook any faster."
Scott's out of town again. Grand Rapids. I wish he was here though because he says he knows it must be a special occasion if we are having bagel bites for dinner. Today's special occasion is that Finn learned how to climb out of his crib todayand took no nap . He can do it very quickly and silently.
Ooooh Finn, stealth climber!
Contest Entry:
The only thing that will make this day better is a beer.
On this day that's oh so dear
Please remember that I am near
There's no need to live in fear
For I will always bring the beer.
Monica
we missed national pie day
On the front of the card, a close up of Willie Nelson's face.
Inside : You are always on my mind.
Old Willie or young Willie? Oh he looks the same.
Here is a link to pictures of our house:

You'll be able to see it the cleanest it's been since we moved in. The photographer was here today, and the realtor should get it listed in the next few days. Monica, that house is right across from Joe's, but out of our price range. Mary, we saw that house online too, and will try to go see it sometime soon. We're considering Ankeny, which is a great town, but just so not what we are looking for. Hardly any houses built before 1985, very 'burbs. It does have great schools, friendly people, would be a little closer to Andy's work, and still close enough to downtown Des Moines.
Ok, that link works but didn't take you to the beginning of the photos like I thought it would. It's all the pictures in the 1620 e 12th st set.
Coffee in moderation
Garlic
Curry and mustard
Fish that is not fried
Bright fruits and veggies
Russet potatoes, not overcooked.
According to latest studies these are foods that can help prevent amyloid plaques from developing in brain.
Dr. Oz
Thanks Dr. Oz...if you can mash it is it overcooked
Bake it.
And exercise too.
Dr. Oz
But a russet is not a bright veggie..it goes against eveything else I learned last year...are you certain Dr. Russet?
That's why it was separate from veggies. It is specifically russets. No new red. No cafeteria flakes. No Peruvian purples. Just russets.
If you want to mash it, go ahead.
Bake it, stomp or kick it, instead.
Every spud has his day
Celebration is OK!
BBBBest regards.
In 2 hours I get to go to the tanning booth, Iowa law mandates you wait 24 hours. This will be my 3rd day, I'm hooked, it's the perfect way to feel good when it's like Stalag 13 outside.
I hope to be a russet soon!
