I took these pics last November at our annual Farmsgiving. We're headed up there tonight and it reminded me of these pictures so I thought I would share.
Thirteen Cats LaVelle is now available for purchase. I plan on announcing through the regular social platforms on Monday, but wanted to post it here first! For those who want and buy one, I hope you enjoy!
Congratulations Des....how many have been published in the family?
I just went to the Chrome Country Corner's website. He has a blog on there dispensing cooking tips. DON'T follow his advice on cooking poultry. It could kill you. He prescribes cooking to a lower temp known to kill salmanella and lower than health code and industry standard mandates.
Chuck Shockley of KLGA interviewed some woman from the Extension Service about cooking turkeys and he's milked it for a week and a half. Everyday you hear talking about thawing, cooking, storing, etc.
Watched a great CU/ISU game yesterday with Jim and Mikey, Ed, Joe J. and Erin's brother and kids. It was a really fun game although Creighton was really robbed of at least overtime if not a win. Thanks to Ellen, Andy, and Brianne for babysitting Sam and Finn. We owe you!
Dad - I've seen that kid play a lot. He is the one kid on the team that stood out to me as being physical (other than a middle linebacker they had). Not real big but strong, aggressive, seemed pretty fast and hard hitting. The Avon team is a finesse offense (make the catch, fall down or get out of bounds). They usually had him lined up at tight end or h-back.
Josh and I bought a very small amount of Allied Irish Bank stock this morning. In 2007 it was at about $54+ a share. We bought ours at 1.17 a share, though at its lowest it was around 79 cents.
It was more for fun than a real investment, but I'm curious to see what happens with the bailout.
There is a story in the South Bend Tribune (internet edition) this evening to the effect that the South Bend police retracted an earlier statement that they had no knowledge of the sexual abuse investigation by the ND police. They admit their mistake and say that they had been notified by the ND police that they were investigating the incident. That investigative report is now in the county prosecutor's office and after reviewing the report he will determine if charges will be filed. Dad
Farm report: Cool weather, much plotting and thumping from upstairs, some great paper hats constructed, regular turkey, turkey with mild curry basting, stuffing, garlicky delicious mashed potatoes, kapusta, sausages, roasted veggies (turnips, sprouts, carrots and corn on the coblets), green bean casserole, yummy breads galore, pumpkin pie, chocolate pie, pear and cranberry pie, killer brownies, whipped cream hand-whipped with the old egg beater, coffee cakes, ziti and meatballs Friday night, women took two out of two in Trivial Pursuit. Oscar said it's his favorite farm. He was also impressed to meet a real farmer who drives a real tractor. Deer sightings (big ones) and lots of coyote music.
Congrats, Des! This is the perfect gift for the Cat Lady at the office. She'll hate it. What I've read so far is great.
Brianne will be starting a new job in a couple weeks. She is going to be a public relations specialist for Drake University (just a few blocks from our house). She's also starting grad schools there in January, where she'll be getting a masters in public administration.
Yeah, Creighton really got hosed on Sunday. Photos show the ISU guy still had both hands on the ball when the buzzer went off. The promoter of the game even apologized to McDermott, the new CU coach, for not having a replay monitor courtside. But McDermott was pretty classy about it. It was a great game, though. Thanks to Scott and Emily for getting the tickets!

How long to cook a 14lb. unstuffed turkey? I haven't roasted a turkey since we lived in Macedonia and there we actually fried several birds. Pat and I did roast one while Josh and Scott (mostly Josh) fried one. I say mostly Josh b/c Scott had to work that day.
Em - 475F degrees for 20 minutes then turn down to 250F and cook 20 minutes for every pound the turkey weighs.
Joe J- Maybe Brianne can help them come up with something other than thier "D+" marketing scheme.
If anyone saw this they were trying to emphasize Drake as so much more than an education and thier tag line was D+ as in Drake plus so much more. Bad idea for a college.
We are driving down to Key West for a night. We've never been and decided it's something we should see before leaving the state of Florida (not that we have any plans to do so in the near future). I'm looking forward to seeing the famous sunset, and six-toed cats of course.
Hah! the extension lady doing the tips on cooking turkey interview on the morning news (I really can't believe they milked that interview for over 2 weeks) said to not cook the turkey at under 350 degrees. Lesson? The ISU Extension service is more interested in overkill-nuking every single microbe than providing advice on how to cook a tasty turkey. I'm convinced the war on Germs by our government is a vestigal remnant of WW2's war on Germans.
Although, I do not usually post...I wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone a "Happy Thanksgiving!" We have been so blessed this year. When yah think about it...who woulda thought that our last day in biz would be 04/17 and Tom would begin his new/awesome job on 04/22 and we would "close" on our biz 04/30? Very amazing and it was all because of Him. :-) Of course, we have many more blessings, as do all of you, but this was an amazing gift and we are so thankful! God bless you all as we look forward to another year filled with many blessings. :-)
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Key West was cool, though it rained and blew for most of our time there. We didn't get the true Key West experience - no sunset - but it was fun.
Here is an interesting article about Ireland in the NYTimes:
Ummm... who the heck said ham was their favorite Thanksgiving dish?
My turkey turned out great. I tried the method of cooking it breast side down and flipping it breast side up for the last half hour. It was super juicy. I don't know if it was b/c of cooking it this way or TOm's low and slow method. Maybe both.
ND basketball is starting off on a strong foot. They play for the championship of the Old Spice Classic tomorrow night. Last night, the score of their game at halftime was 21-5. Yes, that is a basketball score. The other team (Cal) scored 5 points.
We're having a great time here is Chicago for Thanksgiving. Ed has been a wonderful host for all the LaVelle's...we met Jen's family (they all flew in) they are VERY nice, and we went out for a grand Thanksgiving dinner. Then the Neb. game and pizza. Today all went to the Art Inst. and tonight the ND game and then off to see Phelan and Dave perform. Wed. night we spent at Jim and Erin's and they took us out for Thai food...yummy. Jim leaves for Russia Sunday! He just went So. America last month and then Finland before that. Oh, ND is starting. Happy Thanks!!

Ah, yes, the monsters made of circles and rectangles and triangles and steel.
Always thought it was odd they way that small barn was built into the slope. Pretty picture though.
Tom
So pretty! Have a great time.

Someone ought to point this out to him....

2 hour delay-freezing drizzle.

Joe,
At least your kids have school. Mine are home all week.

Tom, A kid named Tyler Lance, who goes to Avon H.S. is supposed to be interested in ND. Do you know anything about him? Dad

I meant to clarify that he wouldn't fall down or get out of bounds like the other recievers.

Dad
I tried scouring irisheyes.com for inside scoop on this situation. There was nothing on the free board.
Is anybody else bothered by how much press the royal wedding is getting in this country, you know, the greatest country in the world?

Oh, I forgot to mention this. On December 17, Grace will graduate summa cum laude from Bradley. We're very proud of her.
Go Grace!!!!
In case you missed that, women won Trivial Pursuit, men demanded a rematch, women won again! Oh Yah!
Kudos to Grace! Really impressive. And good job Jayjack girls!
The CU/ISU game the news showed the last second shot and he didn't get it off in time.
Andy
Oh the injustice!

2 spices you find yourself using more and more:
Montreal Steak
Old Bay Seasoning
