I think Josh had a good 40th. He's not seen this yet, we just got home last night. Sanibel was fun and he was surprised to see his brother waiting in the condo. While swimming they were surprised by a manatee which popped up from the water about 4 feet away. It really scared Micah for a moment - Josh, being blind like the most of us, didn't really know what was happening. Josh also found two baby sea turtles getting ready to be tossed onto shore. They were really cute - about 1.5 inches long. He took them back out into hte water a bit in the hopes they might survive. Other than that, we walked around and went out to eat. P
We took the boys to a chinese restaurant last night to celebrate Don's enrollment into a Marial Arts class.
The chinese waitress, in an effort to build dialogue, asked us if all three kids were ours. We said, "Yes."
She said "Oh 2 bouys and one girl".
We all looked at each other puzzled and then she realized her mistake. She looked at Liam and started to step away from the table embarrased at her mistake. Still looking at Liam she said, "Oh! so sorwee! He's just so pood-wee (pretty)."
We all got a great laugh out of it. Even good natured Liam.
Scott arrested some guy in August and now he doesn't have to go to NY for 2-3 weeks because of stuff to do with this guy's trial. Very happy. I hope he arrests someone every August.
Oh and Sam has some viral thing similar to hand foot and mouth but he only has sores in his mouth. Very painful for the little guy. He has been crying for two days. He won't eat eventhough he's so hungry. Last night he went to bed clutching crakers the way he usually clutches hot wheels. This morning he held a cookie in his hands for at least three hours. Smelling it, but not taking a nibble. He had to take it everywhere with him. I finally got him to eat a little cheese and drink a cup of gatorade this afternoon.
I'm alive! Weak as a kitten and this computer is giving me a headache. I get up and shuffle around for a half hour and then I have to go back to bed and crash. Still a little vertigo and headaches. Whatever this is, don't get it. I'm going to have missed a whole week of work right when religious ed is starting. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers - keep them up and help me get to work on Monday!
Cathy, I just heard about your illness. I hope it goes away soon. Sounds awful.
I think Sam's sores are starting to hurt less. He seemed a little more chipper tonight and let me give him cheese and gatorade again. I have to put shred size bits into his right cheek very gingerly. It took about a half an hour to eat an ounce of cheese. I hope he doesn't try to milk this. He won't eat shakes I think they're too cold.
Mom! So good to see signs of life from you! Keep getting better, we miss you! Poor Sam! He can't afford not to eat for too long. Maybe pediasure or something?
Pat, How did you pull off the surprise? Did he really think he was on a plane for Minn? Was he drugged...did you get the airport to change all the "destination" markers to Minn? Is he just really near-sighted?
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Doctors rushed a Cedar Rapids man into a treatment room after they found a worm had taken up residence in his eye.
John Matthews said he sought medical help after he noticed two spots obscuring his vision in his left eye. Several specialists tested him and he was sent to the ophthalmology department at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Doctors there did more tests before they found the worm.
The Telegraph Herald newspaper in Dubuque reports doctors shot two rounds of laser blasts into Matthews' eye to kill the worm. Matthews says he "could see it from behind, moving, trying to dodge the laser."
Matthews says doctors think he got the worm either when he was in Mexico or while turkey hunting.
An Animal Planet film crew came to Iowa to tape a segment after Matthews called them and told them about his ordeal.
Many thanks to Emily and Scott for a fabulous dinner (Paula Dean soup and salmon with mango salsa!)this weekend and putting us up on the way back from celebrating our friends' wedding on the North Shore. Sam was definitely feeling much better, it seemed. He was funny and climb-y. Jude sounded pretty proud of one of his first homework assignments, too. He asked Emily to start a museum of his work. :-)
MACON, Ga. - Shelby Marwan Heggs of Macon admits he's been a sinner, but hopes his past won't keep a judge from allowing him to become a Saint. Heggs, who has convictions for drunken driving and marijuana possession, has filed a court petition that would allow him to change his name to Saint Jody Almighty Bedrock.
It was great seeing Joe and Brianne and Jude was very sad when he came home from school and they were not here. :(
So the Bishops in MN are sending out a dvd having to do with "protecting marriage" to all parishoners in the state. I am really annoyed by this. I will pay Jude's tuition, but I'm not giving any more money to the church if this is how they choose to spend their money.
Hey - Emma got elected to the student council at her school. She had to give a speech to her class. She did and in it she promised a movie and snack day for the students.
I told the principal she may have a request to make of him... and what could we do to help make it happen.
Nice work, Emma. I hope she knows that she doesn't have to deliver on her campaign promises. Just tell her not to get caught lying once she's sworn in. And never to pay for candy with a school check.
Nick Foals is now a Heisman dark horse. Nick Foals just played against Iowa. I'm not drawing any conclusions from this correlation. Yet. I'm reserving judgement until I hear that Robert Bolden is now a Heisman candidate in two weeks time.
I thought the Hawkeyes had, like, the best defense ever.
The defense didn't give up the scores. In fact, the defense did some of it's own scoring. It was special teams meltdown and a pick six - not a classic Stanzi ball, reciever should have had it.
Bummer.
Don't strut too much. Did you see the Husker's schedule next year? No more Big 12 north patsies to pound on all year long.
I'm waiting for you to get out of Florida so I can finally go there again. Way to go, Emma!
Caroline is beginning to grab toys and try to get them to her mouth. She enjoys toys with human-like smiles the best. She also loves watching football on tv, but we try to limit that. She seems to favor ND over ISU.
I don't want to sound apocalytic but food is going to get more and more expensive. Two things are driving this.
One - a short term but acute factor is, Russia and other parts of Asia had severe drought and the wheat crop failed. They used to export animal feed stock. Now they import. Much of what they import is our corn crop. Taking that much feed stock out of domestic circulation is driving up the cost of all protiens. Also, the same weather conditions that caused the drought (high heat) killed almost all of the Russian chicken stock. We are exporting chicken like never before.
Second - A situation that looks to be a more sustained factor it, we have 2 billion Chinese coming out of poverty. They are for the first time ever buying protiens. Primarily, pork. Pork bellies have set record high after record high. Normally, there are frozen food storage facilities the size of airports full of pork. These now sit empty.
When one of the primary protiens is high it drives people off of that and on to one of the others so they are all upwardly affected.
The food commodities forcasting gurus are clueless. All forecasts call for higher pricing across the board on food commodities but they vary wildly in thier predictions.
No one knows where all this will go but all agree it will only go up.
Hog farmers are making money for the firt time in a long time. They should continue to do so.
Unless a plague wipes out half of China the situation will only get worse. I see in 20 years nearly every home having a garden. People are going to have to eat less like Americans and more like Asians. Less animal protein and more plant protien.
I was reading this to him and he has been looking for a place to invest a small amount of money, just for play. He was thinking a large food distributor would be a good place.
We don't use Sysco. Tell Josh he missed the boat on pork bellies. After these record highs they should come back down - for a bit.
I as a customer I don't like Sysco. Whenever questioned on high prices or level of service one of the things they often come back with is "well we have investors we need to answer to.
I'm not saying this as a recommendation to buy - just information. They are kind of the WalMart of the Food Distribution business. They are every where and are both loved and loathed.
Incidently, we don't negotiate food prices with the Syscos of the world. We negotiate with the Tysons, IBPs and the Cargills (manufacturers) of the world then seperately go to the distributors (Sysco et al) and negotiate terms for them to distribute to our restaurants.
When we make a buy we are big enough to move the market. Not on scale with some - but enough.
I think there was a drought in England which killed off all of the punk rock guitarists which put upward price pressure on the psycodelic guitar players.
Tom, I hope you know that Iowa is in my top five teams that I pull for. I'm just giving you hell but the reality is that truly was a bummer of a loss. A week with Ball State and they'll come back and smack PSU in the mouth. Echos of 2004?
As for the Huskers schedule next season, the fans are looking forward to it (we wouldn't be if this realignment somehow happened in the Callahan era). But hey, thank God the BigTen was merciful and left Indiana and Purdue off that conference schedule. Good news is I (and the four and a half Husker fans in this family) will never have to hunt down a Pay Per View venue in or around Decatur City on Labor Day.
I don't like Sysco, either. Their trucks are always, always blocking traffic in Chicago (a city I will be moving back to after the first of the year).
I was thinking how sweet it would be if both Neb. and Iowa make it to a BCS Bowl this year. The selection committees would be nuts to not try and pair them up. A prelude to an annual border war.
Then we would get to see Nebraska get depants-ed on national TV.
I too root for Nebraska in most bowl games - depending on who they are playing.
Anyone see the stat from that game? Iowa's roster has 50 some Iowa kids on it. Arizona had about 15 Arizona kids on it. Most of th rest of Arizona's roster were from California.

Happy B-day Josh, what are you doing for fun?
Happy Birthday, Josh!
Surprise! Have a fun birthday, Josh!
Hope you're having fun Josh! Have a great weekend!

Happy Birthday Josh. What did you do?
Happy Birthday Josh - I changed your picture cause I thought you looked cooler in this one.
He does.
Hey everyone,

Happy Birthday Josh,
Is that a zydeco band in the background? Might explain the hat.

Thanks for all the wishes! I had a great weekend.

Tom,
It was a mariachi band...from our trip to Mexico a couple years ago.

Emily that is so sad! I hope he eats soon.
How is Cathy?
Poor Sam! Could he eat yogurt or icecream, something smooth? Something that won't scratch or scrape inside his mouth.

Sam's pretty much back to normal now. Thanks, everyone! Cathy, how are you doing?
Good. Doing good. Planning game food.
like, possum and squirrel?

BLTs, which I'm sorry to report was a little premature on my part. Back to yogurt and chicken soup.
Happy Birthday Josh!
Sorry so late,

Pat,
How did you pull off the surprise? Did he really think he was on a plane for Minn? Was he drugged...did you get the airport to change all the "destination" markers to Minn? Is he just really near-sighted?
So the recession offically ended in June of 2009.
Good job Obama.

Cash for Clunkers, artificially inflated home sales in one month and torn up and resurfaced roads that were in decent shape.
Obama - brilliant.

Going to see Roger Waters perform "The Wall" tomorrow night. I am pretty exited about it, but, damn, concerts are expensive.
I think there was a drought in England which killed off all of the punk rock guitarists which put upward price pressure on the psycodelic guitar players.
I thought punk rockers were tougher than that.
Everything is expensive.
