Happy Birthday Dan Brianne and Finn! You should throw a joint party... that would be quite a mixer.

I like Sam in the background of Finn's photo.

Happy Birthday all. Hope was great.

George W. Bush spoke at this trade show I'm at this morning. I was in the third row right in front of the podium. Very entertaining. Self depricating and insightful. The guy is no idiot. Spoke for an hour with out notes or a teleprompter. He's a demonstrative speaker when he's loose. Not once did he criticize Obama and said he wouldn't.

Finn's is tomorrow and I haven't got one thing to give him yet. His one year check up is on Friday and I am hoping he's not such a skinny Finny anymore.

Hey! I said happy birthday yesterday and it's not here! Could have sworn I saw it posted. Blogger has gotten very cranky lately.
Anyway, happy birthday to you all! Hope it is/was great and you had/have fun.

Any of you who have been through Council Bluffs a time or two know that the overpass on Broadway is the funnel to Omaha and also a main artery through town.

Right now that overpass is under construction and about 1/2 of the traffic is being diverted to Avenue G. So why is it then, that Avenue G is now getting it's top scraped off and will have major resurfacing!!! Diverting me to ever more remote roads where there is a stop sign every block. AAAARRRGGG!

Go over the Ave G bridge, turn left on 16th and go to Ave A, which is a one-way shot across town.

Where is everyone?

I went to what I thought was kettlebell class this morning and it turned out to be boxing conditioning. I lasted about 35 minutes...when he said to wrap your hands and put on your gloves I snuck out.

Blackhawks Won the Stanley Cup!! said...

Was a good time watching the game last night at a bar. It makes me feel good for Duncan Keith who lost 7 teeth in the conference championship (although only 3 of them were real) - he didn't lose them for nothing.

Parade is tomorrow a block up from where I work. Should be fun!

c said...

The house is sitting next to the hole in the ground that used to be its basement. Perfect place for some little kid to get hurt. We told them if they're not moving it right away to wrap it up in fencing, so at least they did that, but it sort of gives them permission to not be in a big hurry. New moving date is next Saturday. We told them it HAS to be before the end of the month, again tacitly giving them carte blanche to wait until 11:59PM June 30. We'll see.

Yea blackhawks!

Have fun, Ed!

Pat-

What are kettlebells? A folkloric Swiss dairy / music festival? Why would you mix that up with boxing?

Lisa

Anonymous said...

Kettlebell is a russian form of exercise which involves swinging a weight around for awhile. It uses two hand and one hand grips. I do not mix it with boxing - classes are held in a gym that mostly teaches boxing and muy thai boxing. From wikipedia:

"The kettlebell or girya (Russian: гиря) is a cast iron weight looking somewhat like a cannonball with a handle. Some modern kettlebells feature adjustable weights or are rubber coated to improve safety for floors.

While today, there are sizes that range from 5 lbs to 175 lbs, the traditional Russian kettlebell is usually one which weighs 1 Pood (roughly 16kg / 35lbs).

Unlike traditional dumbbells, the kettlebell's center of mass is extended beyond the hand, similar to a Clubbell's. This allows for swing movements not possible with traditional dumbbells. Because more muscle groups are utilized in the swinging and movement of a kettlebell than during the lifting of dumbbells, a kettlebell workout is said to be more effective, and yields better results in less time."

A good friend of Scott's little boy died of brain cancer this morning. Little Joey Glow was 6 and had been battling to survive for over a year. We may all be heading to Omaha for the funeral or maybe Scott will go on his own- not sure yet. At any rate, we w on't be making it home to send off Tom and Nance. Sorry guys and have a safe trip.

em said...

To clarify: Scott has a friend named Rick Glow and it was Rick's son who died.

c said...

Emily, that is so sad about the little boy. I was going to say you could stay at our house, but duh, you'll be at Scott's parents.

Someday I'm gonna weigh 3 1/2 poods. I think a kettlebell sounds ideal for boxing, if you really, really want to win.

c said...

This morning's W-H said Ahman Green signed with the new Omaha Nighthawks football team.

Anonymous said...

Emily that's horribly sad. I can't imagine dealing with something like that.

Here is another sad story: I just read this in the Algona paper. I want to send Hazel more flowers.

To the Editor:

We went to the cemetery on Friday (June 4) to water my little girl’s and my husband’s basket of flowers and the baskets were gone. I finally had the money to buy them for them for the first time, and somebody stole them. They took my husband’s flag and the vase that it went into.

That is pretty low when you have to steal from the dead.

Welcome to the Big Ten, Nebraska. No more football patsies to play week after week. At least until you get the Gophers.

Tom

Ed X said...

Don't worry Tom. Nebraska always does a good job of front loading the schedule with enough patsies anyway.

It was good to see that USC got slapped. I guess that ND game I saw where Reggie Bush pushed Lienart into the endzone really WASN'T a win for USC.

It is starting to get easier and easier for ISU to get into a BCS game. Once TX, OK, TT and Tex A&M leave they will have it made.

So the conference realignment is rolling on - the one thing that I saw today that really made me sit up and listen was that there may be potential for a new Midwest basketball conference of private universities.

This would potentially include Creighton, DePaul, Marquette, Dayton, Xavier, St. Louis, Detroit and Butler.

I think that would be awesome, but it looks unlikely.

Here is a link to a sight that has a GREAT rundown of each team that gets updated:

http://collegesportsinfo.com/conference-realignment-grid/

c said...

Would that eliminate a lot of the smaller universities from the NCAA tourney if they were all in one conference? How will I do the brackets?

m.e. said...

Tom, now that you have more time on your hands you will have a chance to read up on Nebraska's record vs. the Big 10...like beating Michigan every time they meet, etc...
This move will be great for Nebraska.

m.e. said...

I don't like that conference idea Ed (all private schools)...the private/public mix is good!

Now that the Big XII has 10 schools and the Big X has 12 schools are they going to change names?

Mr Leopold Bloom ate with relish the inner organs of beasts and fowls. He liked thick giblet soup, nutty gizzards, a stuffed roast heart, liver slices fried with crustcrumbs, fried hencod's roes. Most of all he liked grilled mutton kidneys which gave to his palate a fine tang of faintly scented urine.

Josh leaves for Switzerland today until July 17th. This time he'll be staying with one of his former coworkers (and wife and kid) who moved back to Switzerland last year. Not as nice as his last trip when he had his own apartment in town, but he'll be up in the woods on the hill, and it's very pretty up there. And apparently they have a pool and a sauna. I"m heading to Naples for a quick overnight trip tonight, to check out the gulf coast before the oil moves in.

Pat! Josh, Joe and I should rendezvous in the Alps, since we're going to be in Austria for our honeymoon. How funny would that be?

We walked around the farmer's market with Ellen and Andy this morning, and Ellen drank about 32 ounces of raspberry tea to try to induce labor, then said she was going to spend the afternoon cleaning the bathroom. We're rooting for the baby to come this weekend!

Happy Father's Day to all you Dads. Have a relaxing day!

That would be great Brianne! He's on the west side (France side) of Switzerland during his stay but if you happen to wander over, let me know!

Naples was lovely. I saw dolphins cavorting, a huge grouper being caught, and a school of sting rays about 10 feet away from me (moving further away as fast as they could). No oil.

Looks like it's a foregone conclusion that Nebraska will own Iowa for many years go come. Hey, don't kill the messenger! Mandel said it, not me.

By the way, is there a wedding coming up? Should I buy some plane tickets or something?

I smell hotel room party. I wonder how Jen will react when I fill the bathtub full of ice and beer...?

Woo-woo Mary!

Last night we found out that both the Hampton Inn and the Fairfield are full. Anyone who has not made reservations yet should probably start looking for a hotel. We got a room for Thursday night at the Super 8 but we'll be at the Fairfield Friday and Saturday. The Hampton also told Joe that we didn't have enough people register to provide a shuttle, although Brianne is working on that.

We're going to a CWS game tonight - go Horned Frogs!

Anonymous said...

I think Joe said they had hired their own shuttle service. Isn't this correct Joe?

Good job Mary!

Randy asked about the shuttle when we made our reservation. They said the shuttle didn't run that late but that the wedding party had a separate shuttle agreement.

Yes, we will have a private shuttle running to both hotels. It will do one pickup from the hotels before the reception (sometime around 6) and then it will run to both hotels from 10:30 to midnight.

Ohh, I hate when you try to post, then come back a few hours later and see it didn't work. Why is this happening to everyone?

My "cut-off" date is probably this weekend, but I have been working very hard to avoid thinking about missing anything.

We do have reservations at the closer hotel (Fairfield?) Friday and Saturday night that we probably won't be using :( If anyone needs that room, let me know. I am waiting until the last minute to cancel anyway. My email is ellen.jayjack@gmail.com.

Ellen, have you asked your Dr. about inducing? Or maybe you want to do everything natural...but all 3 of mine were induced and the doctors eem to prefer it that way- it's better than coming to the hospital in the middle of the night. Most places won't do it until 39 weeks though Potter in CB did it for me and Molly at 38 weeks.

em said...

Our outdoor garbage can - the one we roll to the curb once a week- is teeming with maggots. So disgusting. I almost hurled taking out the garbage today. What to do about it? Speaking of hurling, Sam did it 3 times yesterday. Once just as we were leaving to get Jude from camp. I had to leave it on the carpet because I had no choice. I'm certain the camp volunteers smelled the vomit when we checked Jude out. Then he did it again right when we got back. I guess it's better than in the van. Scott's out of town again this week but gets back either late tonight or tomorrow. Fun times. I'm trying to keep perspective in light of the recent funeral we had to go to in Omaha for the 6 year old boy. Maybe the saddest thing I've ever witnessed first-hand.

c said...

Once your garbage is emptied, spray the inside with any lethal chemical you happen to have on hand - maybe even Tilex or Scrubbing bubbles if you have nothing else - and clap the lid on and then spray it out with the hose tonight. Or else just douse it with gin and toss a match. There is nothing more gross than those little blind faceless heads popping up when you lift the lid. Maggots are the zombies of the insect world.

We have a dead and half decomposed mole in our rose garden. Belly up, paws in the air.

I'm not going to pick it up and it's keeping me from having the girls help weed, etc.

We took our neighbor Anne to the CWS game last night. Perfect evening with a cool breeze. Tcu trailed for most of the game (TCU is the underdog/Cinderella story/default favorite here this year)and then in the eighth busted out the bats. A couple solo home runs got them within striking distance and then ,with a couple of pitching changes, loaded up the bases. At first the fans were just stomping in the stands to create a rumbling thunder that really built up the tension and get into FSU's heads. Then they added cheering, and with two outs, the mighty Matt Curry strode up to the plate with his bat held out before him and his mission shining on his face. Of course he ran it up to a full count. Then he blasted it straight out over the center field wall. The whole place went nuts just because it was so mythical. That kid might sign somewhere for millions, but he'll never have a better baseball moment.

ellen said...

Oh Gosh, maggots are the absolute worse. I pick up all the dead animals in our yard, "finish off" the ones dog attacks and leaves, and take care of all the bugs in the house but I cannot deal with maggots. Puke instantly. I actually spray down our outside garbage can every few weeks in the summer as a preventative measure.

As far as induction goes, the Dr. said today they will not even talk about it or even stripping membranes until 39 weeks, which will be the day of the wedding. As of today I am at least 3 1/2 cm, 90% effaced and have a "bulging bag of waters." I know woman can stay like this for long time, but come on Baby, get out already!

i think i could have been happy going my whole life without hearing the words 'stripping membranes'.
