Happy Birthday Nick! What kind of cake do you like? What do you want for your birthday dinner? Since you b-day is so close to Christmas, you probably don't need anything...is that right?
The British Museum story (to the right)...I just learned that the Rosetta Stone isn't just a late night infomercial featuring a woman with a low cut rose colored blouse!
Funny how a 25 year old video game console can still keep kids today entertained for hours. Madden NFL looks more realistic than the real thing and Nick remains partial to the 2d blue on black graphics and simple controller of the Vextrex. Happy birthday Nick.

As of 8 am Sunday morning the web had nothing on this. Heard a radio headline saying gun shots were reported and the discovery of 2 bodies in a Leon home.
Leon, Ia., — Two bodies were found inside a home in Leon early Saturday, authorities said. The Decatur County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call reporting a shooting shortly after midnight.
Officers responding to the call found the bodies of Ashley Singh, 20, and Brand Broich, 21, inside the home. There were no signs of forced entry. Police said autopsies were pending.
Leon, about 75 miles south Des Moines, is a community of about 2,000
The Chili Cookoff was sooo much fun! We made Buffalo Bill's Wild West Chili...we entered as a team with our friends Barrie and Marie, I found the buffalo meat at the new co-op. We spent friday evening making the chili and thenSat. night at the event. We wore cowboy hats, bandanas and guns...we were very cool. But, not cool enough...even though we had the best chili, we didn't win. However we had a great time, we went to the Pub after (got there at 8 and left at 1 a.m.) Steve Kollasch sat with us for awhile at the pub (seem to validate our outfits)...also, there were guys dressed in hotdog outfits competing (Lee Elbert and a Thilges) they ended up at the Pub dancing till the wee hours in their hot dog outfits. We kept "feeding" the juke bos cause it was so funny watching them dance! We spent the night at Mom and Dad's.
We gave our Oldsmobile away yesterday too! It had been towed to Spencer after the accident (our AAA would only bring it 100 miles) and Mike and I went over to Spencer to try to drive it to Algona...we didn't get far...more pieces fell off and then the engine gave up...we left it on the side of the road on Hiway 18 near Ruthven and then a junk dealer from Emmetsburg picked it up yesterday.
Lisa, there's lots of great cars on Craigslist Omaha (also, the 3rd entry down if you google it is really funny, it's titled "to the guy doing my ...")
Also an auto auction on Jan 27...www.i80auto.com...Jim Momtagne always gets great cars at these auctions, sometimes for $500.
Lisa, You should refer people to the sidebar article. I was thinking, who? River People hostages? Girl Scout hostages? Why would the Girl Scouts hold anyone hostage?
Snowy, icy day in Des Moines today. I don't have to work and Andy went in a few hours late, so now I am watching all the tree branches in our neighbor's yard break off the trees one by one. We were without power for about two hours this morning. It got pretty boring, but luckily Joe has the day off too and coming to pick me up for lunch! Anyone else have a snow day?
I'm so depressed about the health care bill. Americans have the attention span of a 2-year-old. And on the other hand, I wish Obama had created jobs a la Roosevelt instead of creating a "jobless recovery" (shorthand for the rich get richer and everyone else gets poorer.) It's like he believes in trickle-down economics or something. If he doesn't pass out some candy, Americans are going to vote the Dems out before they have a chance to do anything good.
We missed the worst of the ice storm, but for some reason, our sidewalks and driveway are terribly, treacherously icy while the streets are OK. Did Algona get the ice storm?
I am pissed about the health care bill too. Seriously...do people really think that in one year Obama can solve all the problems the last admin took 8 years to create? People are so stupid! I understand people who have good health care don't want thier's messed with. I am lucky enough to fall into that category. But what about all the people with no health care? Do the majority of Americans just not care about them?
And to the Anons above - please don't ruin the blog for everyone else. Debbie Downers! I am in no mood today. These kids are wearing me out. Ellen, some day soon you will pine for a boring day.
Des Moines is an onion ring town! Although it seems popular around here to do the skinny, shoe-string onion "rings." I want fat, round onion rings when I am craving them.
We tried to go to a new place that does Lebanese food, but it was closed so we went to Fongs, a Chinese pizza place. It's mostly a place to go after you have been out drinking to get some food, but neither of us had been there to actual have a meal. It is pretty good.
The health care bill makes me sad. It seems like something too good to be true. Even though a lot of people like a politician that says they are for improved or universal health care, they get too scared when it comes around to actually doing something about it. Law makers are pressured into doing such a watered-down version of a bill that it hardly even seems worth it. I think people think that they care about everyone else without good insurance, but it is still an "us" vs "them" mentality. As in, "Yes, those people are entitled to good health care too, as long as it doesn't really affect me."
Ellen, Mike and I almost ate there when we were in Des Moines last, but we were intrigued by the British Pub across the street...it's VERY good and actually feels more Irish inside with lots a lamb dishes and MANY Irish beers, etc...I would HIGHLY recommend. Your parents would love it.
One facet of this win by Brown is that he will now be the savior of the Republican party. And that's too bad, because it seemed to me that the Repubs were sending Rep. Peter King from Long Island to do all of the news show duties, he's on CNN and MSNBC and the networks alot, now the shine will be on Brown. Peter King is a family friend. He came to Uncle Bob's 40th anniv. party )Monica and me and our girls and Mom and Dad were there)...also, Diane Strong used to work for him...so, goodbye Peter...goodbye health insurance...hello insanity.
Yes there needs to be healthcare reform. But Obama screwed this one from the start. Promising that negotiations would be put on cspan and then well "Sorry, but we met behind closed doors and Nebraska get indemnified FOREVER! And we're gonna toss a few hundred million to Louisiana."
Americans do have a short attention span but what is killing this is the Americans are tired of "politics as usual" (weren't those going to go away with Obama)..dirty back room deals. Anything to get it done.
The whole time Obama, seeming to hold at higher stake his pristine image, refuses to bully pulpit this thing into existence. He won't get his hands dirty. He leaves this up to the inept Harry Reid and the crazy eyes Nancy Pelosi. Neither of whom carry any credibility with the nation as a whole.
The failure of a healthcare bill to pass is Obama's.
I agree with Ed, who over Christmas said, "Just get something passed then they can start tweeking it."
This something, with it's trillion dollar price tag and dirty deals, became untenable in the eyes of those in the most liberal of states.
Obama has made a huge strategic blunder for which only a small portion of the price has been paid (last night's results). In the next elections more retribution will be extracted.
For years the American bishops, the American Catholic Church, have been lobbying for health care reform and they endorsed the bill that came out of the House. But they could not endorse the bill passed by the Senate because it did not provide health care for persons living in their mothers' wombs. In fact it provided a means to make it economically feasible for more people to kill those defenseless people with government assistance. That's why Brown's election was a blessing-- not because it will kill health care reform, but because it will slow down the process (remember that the president's plan would not go into effect for several years anyway, although the higher taxes would begin right away) and we can end up with a law that provides health care for EVERYONE, including those people who have not been born yet. Dad
Our choir director has resigned when her affair with a married member of the choir was exposed. Fortunately I think it will only become common knowledge gradually and not be a big shocking scandal all at once because frankly, we've had enough of that. But what the heck, huh?
More rain coming. The more our roof fail, the more failing we see. Almost every time it starts to rain we are finding a new leak. Lots in the sun room. Leaks around various areas of the kitchen... etc.
And to think it all started with a freezing rain / snow storm.
We could make it a murder mystery where the sinful choir director who wouldn't let Generations of Faith have the church nine stinkin nights a year turns up dead.
The sinful choir director should be offering to come teach music for half an hour before the GOF dinner for those families who wish to (and can) come. There are too many people who don't know the songs.
Every good story has redemption and / or judgement.
Besides, you guys spend so much time teaching about liturgy, there ought to be some what of helping people participate better.
The people who have stepped up to organize and lead choir until we can find a replacement are going back to the songs everybody knows instead of four new songs every Sunday. New songs are good, but a Christmas without "Joy to the World" is ridiculous.
That last post is correct. A fetus is a human being. The word "fetus" does not mean the unborn child is not human; it merely denotes that the child is not born yet but is living in his or her mother's womb. In the past, Planned Parenthood and other similar organizations that encourage/promote abortion took the position that a fetus is not human but only a collection of cells with the potential to become a human being, but I believe that even they have abandoned that argument, even for early term abortions. Dad
I dunno. I know he (the County Attorney) has "issues" with the Supervisors and part of me wonders if he would consider me a malleable (spelling?) board member in his corner.
Maybe if more people contact me about it then I would really consider it.
Tom - you should do it. In 1926 Harry Truman was elected county commissioner (with help from the Tom Pendergrast political machine in KC) and by 1934 he was a Senator and by 1945 he was president. You can do that! You just have to make sure the president dies.
And besides - the county could use a centrist democrat like yourself.
It's your chance to affect policy. Ask them what kind of support you would get for the election. Is it party-based, and if so, would the party help with campaign costs? I realize it's mostly yard signs etc, but that stuff adds up. And between now and the election, you'd be appearing at public events and need your campaign stuff. But counties and other local governments need smart, practical ethical people who have a stake in the local welfare.
And you should know...are they using you as a sacrificial lamb to fling at some long-established supervisor of the other party? That wouldn't be all bad - getting your foot in the door of local politics pays off in other ways. The main question is: would I be good for this county? (Answer: yes.) The second main question is: Can I listen to constant bitching and read vicious slanderous diatribes in the local paper without getting mad or defensive?
WHY when an appliance repairman gives you a 4 hour range that they will show up, and then when they don't make that range it's OK that they don't call and tell you - you have to call them to find out the range was really (in their secret world) 8-3 NOT 8-noon. It's so frustrating. I just wanted to run weekday errands today. And now the cable just went out.
They love showing up and seeing you try to smile while writhing with frustration.
The insurance agency called for three days in a row to verify the address and say they would get the car the next day. They finally got it yesterday. I was on the phone with the tow truck looking out the window and saying, " ...you just drove past..."
If I sleep on my stomach it hurts my back. If I sleep on my back I dream crazy stressful dreams. Usually I'm working in these dreams. So, even when I'm sleeping I'm working.
I think the answer to this can be found in that majic elixer that is the answer to many of life's problems....alcohol!
Have you heard about this smoking cessation drug that Pfizer makes called Cantix? I guess it gives you really crazy dreams and a lot of people have committed suicide after going on it.
Sleep in the position of a swastika - half stomach, half side, with arms and legs bent. Of course, this means your bedmate will be clinging to the last six inches of mattress, but parents are used to that. That's what couches and all-night TV are for. Not saying you can't self-medicate first.

scary!!!
It was a murder-suicide. Police just haven't confirmed it yet. Pretty sad. They had a 3-year-old.
I suspect the River People.
Tom
It's Girl Scout Cookie Time!
Mmmm
Caramel de lites
Peanut Butter Patties (covered in chocolate)
Peanut Butter Sandwich Creme
Thin Mints
Shortbread
They are just $3.50 a box and Mary Laurel is selling.
I just may have her call you!
Lisa
Lisa, do have her call. I love thin mints and shortbread. The caramel de lites are yummy, too.
Monica
I was surprised by the big spreads in the playoff games this weekend. I imagine some bookies were pulling their hair out. Is that typical?
Mary how'd the chili cookoff go?
p
ooh, chili and cookies. yum!

That sounds very fun. And yummy.
We went to Daybreakers today. The fraternal vampires were named Frank and Edward.
p
Randy backed the Oldsmobile out of the driveway today and the insurance company is coming to pick it up.
It did not sound healthy.
It made me sad... like I was saying goodbye to an old warrior who had give more than he had. (the car is 15 1/2 years old!) Salute!
Lisa

Are there any restaurants listed for sale on craigslist?
Not any good ones.
One of the hostages later wrote a book, I think it was titled 444 Days. I met the woman to whom he dedicated it.
She married someone else.
Lisa
Lisa,
You should refer people to the sidebar article. I was thinking, who? River People hostages? Girl Scout hostages? Why would the Girl Scouts hold anyone hostage?

You are so right. I guess I got carried away by my little bit of information.
US Embassy Hostages during Carter Administration.

So, I see that Phelan is at Barden's Bouduoir this evening. Appearing with Wetdog. An animal theme...
p
ha! Yes, her tour is going very well, they have groupies following them...plus she's able to check out museums and points of interest during the day.
For years the American bishops, the American Catholic Church, have been lobbying for health care reform and they endorsed the bill that came out of the House. Our choir director has resigned when her affair with a married member of the choir was exposed. Fortunately I think it will only become common knowledge gradually and not be a big shocking scandal all at once because frankly, we've had enough of that. But what the heck, huh?
Cathy, Is the guy still singing?
Dad
He's not but his wife is. Good for her. He doesn't want to try to save the marriage.
DO we want to talk about John Edwards? I believe Joe 3 called him a cad way back during the election before the news of the affair broke. Well said.
the cad is a Dad
Mom, your choir is scandalous!
Cathy
We should write a book about a small town priest who has to deal with too much human foible among his flock.
Lisa
Ok
More rain coming. The more our roof fail, the more failing we see. Almost every time it starts to rain we are finding a new leak. Lots in the sun room. Leaks around various areas of the kitchen... etc.

I would rather have sunshine.

It is only a fetus until birth. Then it is a baby.
either way, it's a human being.

Tom
I'm felling somewhat flattered. The County Attorney and his wife asked me to run for a seat on the County Supervisor's Board.
Tom
Do it! What would your repsonsibilities be?
Exciting. Are you going to do it?
p
Do it Tom. You would be good.
Monica
I dunno. I know he (the County Attorney) has "issues" with the Supervisors and part of me wonders if he would consider me a malleable (spelling?) board member in his corner.
Maybe if more people contact me about it then I would really consider it.
Tom
Tom - you should do it. In 1926 Harry Truman was elected county commissioner (with help from the Tom Pendergrast political machine in KC) and by 1934 he was a Senator and by 1945 he was president. You can do that! You just have to make sure the president dies.

You should do it, you would be great!
Do it, boy. And when you get elected you can go after those socialist commie reds stinkin up the country!
My press secretary will get back to you. We are formulating, refining, obscuring, tweaking, and shading our message.
The party meetings were this last weekend. Waiting to hear if there was any buzz (good or bad) about me as a candidate.

Around here the cable company comes out pretty quickly - the problem is when you call them you are on hold for literally a half hour.

Tom
Sleep on your side.
If you want to sleep on your stomach, do so with your feet off the end of the bed.
Or sleep on your side.
Lisa
Stop being so helpful. I'm trying to find a reason to drink.
Tom
Have you heard about this smoking cessation drug that Pfizer makes called Cantix? I guess it gives you really crazy dreams and a lot of people have committed suicide after going on it.
The DID quit smoking though.
oh dear.
Hope this doesn't mean a law suit.
Sleep in the position of a swastika - half stomach, half side, with arms and legs bent. Of course, this means your bedmate will be clinging to the last six inches of mattress, but parents are used to that. That's what couches and all-night TV are for. Not saying you can't self-medicate first.
Alcohol, it's cheaper than therapy.
I'm a side sleeper and I almost never remember my dreams.
Stomach and side. Rarely remember dreams.

I didn't watch the speech last night as I had some drying paint to keep an eye on. Did anyone yell, "You lie!"
Tom
The speech was really good. No one yelled.
Sam Alito didn't like all of it. What was the Supreme Court thinking? Just wait till summer when the ads start. They won't have room for the programs.
