The Ortega kids have been in CB this week, and we're having lots of fun. Here we are at Arrowhead Park fishing with the Milbrath girls, and on some stumps at the zoo. Today my mom and Dad will take all the kids to the farm, and by sibs and I will join them tomorrow. I can't wait. Who all is planning to come to the Farm on over Labor Day? Are there Straub Games a-brewin'?
When I was at Culinary school my primary means of entertainment was to play basketball. It was cheap. They called me Rambis because I looked like him with my oversized glasses and I played like him with reckless abandon and a little cheap. I played to win, like all Straubs. My jumper is better than his.
Great pics Molly. Sounds like a fun time. I'll be there for the labor day weekend.
Tom, i'm impressed. I could never dunk. I could catch and hang from the rim but could never dunk. I've now got a vision of you playing basketball like the Hanson brothers played hockey.
Oh, and stop hitting youself with the flyswatter. It's unsanitary.
I made veggie risotto for our visitor and another woman from Kazakhstan last night (more Russian than English has been spoken at the dinner table the past two nights!) and Muyasarra, our guest, told me she liked Joe's cooking much better.
So I obliged and she heartily approved of his spicy chicken (some sort of Cajun rub?) grilled and served over fettuccine tonight. If you ever have a visitor from Tajikistan, serve lots of bread! They love it! (No pork!)
Oh! And we went to the I-Cubs game. I don't think we made her a baseball fan, though.

Nobody likes going to the dentist, but redheads may have good reason.
A growing body of research shows that people with red hair need larger doses of anesthesia and often are resistant to local pain blockers like Novocaine. As a result, redheads tend to be particularly nervous about dental procedures and are twice as likely to avoid going to the dentist as people with other hair colors, according to new research published in The Journal of the American Dental Association.
Researchers believe redheads are more sensitive to pain because of a mutation in a gene that affects hair color. In people with brown, black and blond hair, the gene, for the melanocortin-1 receptor, produces melanin. But a mutation in the MC1R gene results in the production of a substance called pheomelanin that results in red hair and fair skin.
JENSEN BEACH, Fla. — Florida investigators say a man accused of downloading child pornography is blaming his cat.
Keith Griffin of Jensen Beach is charged with 10 counts of possession of child pornography after detectives found more than 1,000 images on his home computer.
According to a sheriff's report Friday, Griffin told investigators that his cat jumped on the computer keyboard while he was downloading music. He said he had left the room and found "strange things" on his computer when he returned.
Griffin is being held on $250,000 bond in the Martin County jail. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
Ed, I also think USC is ranked a little high. While I don't know for sure, word is they've lost a lot of people (including Sanchez who made that offense hum). Are they THAT talented that they don't miss a beat after losing so many to graduation?
We did some canning for the first time yesterday. So far we did corn relish, which is one of my favorites, and jalapeno jelly. I usually like pepper jelly to put in other food, like corn muffins, but mine came out way too sweet. I think it would make a good sweet and sour sauce though. Has anyone else ever made that? Andy also started a batch of jalapeno beer. We are making good use of summer crops and farmers market finds, but it makes me want a bigger yard. We'll attempt a few jars of pickles later in the week.
First day off is just fine...steamy like all the others. Got the oil changed, went to get a new SSN card since the college requires seeing the actual card, went grocery shopping, paid rent, filed bills, watched Joan of Arcadia and now am going to the gym...
We've been picking some giant pinkish termaters as well as tiny Mexico midgets (the kids ate them all every day while they were here) and some little lightbulb-shaped yellow ones. I love tomatoes that you can use one half-inch-thick slice per sandwich. For some reason the paste tomatoes are about two weeks behind, (perhaps kindly arranged by divine providence so that I could do something with them after vacation bible school and vacation because I'm so good.) Ideas? No-fuss ideas, I mean? Just dice'em and freeze'em? The farm is beautiful and lovely. The cemetary fence needs repairing again. While we were there we fixed a couple little things but mostly played with the kids. Any games ideas? I love the sweeping event. Stevo and Ryan keep talking about a cast-iron cookoff because they are building collections of cast-iron cookware. Maybe we could have a non-competetive event where everyone shows off their stuff for one of the dinners? Me, I just like my two skillets. I could make some good polenta or just some great pineapple-bacon cornbread to go with whatever. What say?

Love the pix, Molly. Thanks!
Tom - who is throwing the theme party and where will it be? Chocolate! I want to come. Read CHOCOLATE for spicy chocolate ideas. This is interesting.
lisa

These are great photos! Kids, summer, bridges, worms, fishing poles. Ahhh.

You're laughing. I had some serious ups. I could dunk a volleyball in my heyday. Not bad for a short white guy.
Tom
You've never struck me as particularly short. Right now I'm eating peanut butter on graham crackers and all it's lacking is a little chocolate.
Tom, if you switch to Direct TV let me know because if you tell them I referred you we both get $100.
Great pics Molly. I love summer.
mmmm...Braised Beef Short Ribs with Peppered White Chocolate Gravy.
