Happy Birthday! Sorry I was slow in getting the post up, I had some trouble getting the picture onto the computer. My New Year's resolution is to be a better blogger.

This is a great photo! It could have been better, if you'd moved a wee bit to the side, as that's where I was sitting...

Happy Birthday!

Well Pat, as Meatloaf says "don't be sad, cause 2 out of three ain't bad"!

Happy happy birthday Dad! We're gonna miss you when you leave tomorrow...did you buy those return tickets yet?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I can't think of a better present than going to Florida for a few months. So maybe I wont sent what I got you. Okay, maybe I will.

Ed and I sampled what may have been Chicago's finest hamburgers last night. Boston Blackie's. Turns out they've expanded so the quaintness of being a dirty but stellar little burger has faded. But the burgers were tremendous.

Over a half pound of great beef cooked medium rare with sauteed onions, bacon, cheese on a sesame or kaiser roll. You won't even want any thing else on it as it may take away from the taste.

Whoa. What was that? It almost seems like I'm having ad-writing withdrawal symptoms.

Happy Birthday Dad. Have a safe trip to Fla.

Stevo and I got some kind of killer 7-hour flu yesterday. Went home from work, got into bed and whined about how my clothes were hurting my skin. Tonight's the staff Epiphany party at our house - but we're ready! Everyone brings appetizers or desserts. Here's what I'm making, lifted from Brianne's blog in the Register:

Joe’s taco thingys (my name)

Everyone always wants the recipe for a taco-inspired appetizer Joe makes, so I thought I’d share it with you all in time to wow your New Year’s hosts. It’s vegetarian and I call them “Tacos Jose’s,” after Joe. I failed to take any photos of the two dozen we brought to my family’s Christmas party a) because I didn’t take my camera out of my coat pocket and b) they were gone before I knew it.

Here’s what you’ll need:

* A pack of big, flour tortillas. I like the “Mission” brand because they’re floppy.
* A can of black beans, drained.
* One diced red pepper
* Two diced Roma tomatoes
* Shredded Mexican Cheese (one of those two cup packages)
* salsa
* Chili powder
* Muffin tin (greased) or two, if you have them.
* Oven, set to 350

1. Cut the tortillas into six wedges. We use a pizza cutter. (Four tortillas should do you.)
2. Put one tortilla slice into each muffin tin, so it forms a little cup. There will be pointy edges, but they make it easy to pull the apps out of the pan after baking.
3. Sprinkle a little of the cheese mixture inside each tortilla cup
4. Add small spoonfuls of beans to each cup.
5. Sprinkle in a few pieces of diced red pepper and diced tomato.
6. Spoon some salsa on top of each.
7. Sprinkle more Mexican cheese on top of everything.
8. Dust with chili powder.

Bake for about 10 minutes, until the tortilla edges get crispy, but not burnt. Makes about 24, with some leftover chopped up goodness and cheese to use in a breakfast burrito the next morning.

By the way, I'm sort of casually (lazily) collecting recipes from family members because I think it would be fun to make a family cookbook some day. So if you invent something great, send me the recipe. If I should die suddenly (I thought about it yesterday) they're stored in my documents under "Eggplant Goop Sandwiches".

Happy birthday, Dad!

That's a great picture of you and Mom! What happiness.

What did you do for your birthday? Did you get into Florida in time to see an Irish band? Eat some cabbage or perhaps some crab cakes?

Love,
lisa

They are on a plane right now, or at the Detroit airport...I dropped them off this a.m. at the Des Moines airport...for his B'day we had a great dinner at our house, Joe made the pork loin and potatoes and Nance made the caesar salad and I made side dishes and dessert and the kids decorated the cake...it was great!

poor bamboo,
what shall I do?

Happy Birthday Dad!

SOunds like a great dinner at Mary's. Go to a swany place in Jupiter to continue the celebration.

Anonymous said...

Josh is picking them up at the airport right now. I don't know what we'll do for dinner.

Where are you all?
Mom and Dad ended up getting in at 10:30 last night. We got home a little after 11 and they stayed over b4 heading to Jupiter this morning. They missed the connection in Detroit and were sent to Houston.

p

Anonymous said...

They didn't really miss the connection...they and 6 others (including 2 first class customers in wheel chairs) were there 20-25 minutes before take-off, and they wouldn't let them board!!

Happy (belated) birthday Grandpa!

If anyone is home right now or can watch reruns later, Dr. Phil is interviewing the mother of the teen that went on a shooting rampage in Westroads mall last year.

Pat--I think we brought the cold weather with us. Here it is, almost 10:30 a.m. and it is not even 70 degrees yet. As I look out the window I can see Mom and her water aerobics class doing their thing. Oh well, maybe it will warm up. Dad

I just now noticed the poll on the right. How long has it been up?

Anonymous said...

I just noticed it too (the poll)...how can there be 10 votes and only 9 bloggers here and 2 didn't see it!!!

Say, when is Nick Straub's B'day?

We received a fancy invite to a "Black tie Inaugural Party" here in Algona, should be fun!

Is it wrong of me to steal magazines from the orthodontist (who we've paid almost $16,000 dollars to)? And I see another $6000 with Peter who has a tooth growing in under his tongue. The magazine had some great curry recipes.

Monica

Anonymous said...

Oh, Monica. Shame on you. Surely there was something more valuable you could have stolen, like orthodontia equipment. You could do your own braces-tightening and add it to your arsenal of parental persuasion procedures.

I didn't really feel guilty. Should I feel guilty that I don't feel guilty.

New Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads hired Rice assistant Tom Herman as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Herman was offensive coordinator at Rice for the last two seasons. Using a spread offense, the Owls ranked 10th in yards per game. Rice won 10 games, including its first bowl victory since 1954.
Herman previously coached at Division I-AA Texas State and Sam Houston State, and had a two-year stint as a graduate assistant at Texas.

I'm changing my resolution (since I got in at 9:30 this morning.) I'm not going to eat anymore after dinner, unless, say, we meet the Milbraths for pie to celebrate something, or something like that. Night eating is my addiction and downfall. I was sick all week and couldn't eat, and suddenly at 11:00 last night I was ravenous and ate a can of olives. What's that, like 12,000 calories?

Anonymous said...

Yes, but olive oil is good for you, isn't it? Dad

Anonymous said...

Hmmm
Meet the Milbraths for something.

Sounds Yummy!

But lets's wait until after Randy's big cholesterol check on the 20 or 22.

Right now I'm thinking hash browns, omelets, a mini pancake on the side, coffee and juice. Where does smoked salmon fit into this?

Can you tell we are on a cholesterol-bashing diet in our house?

Mmmm, olives. I' think I'll go eat some now. I have a container of really good Kalamata olives.

Did anyone see Tropic Thunder? If so, would you recommend it? Scott and I have started pay per viewing movies on Fridays. This is only our second week and Tropic Thunder starts at 9:30 tonight on PPV. It's only 4 bucks. Last week we watched The Dark Knight and loved it though I am not satisfied with the way the Two Face character developed.

Anonymous said...

Eat steel cut oats every day to bash cholesterol. They are so tasty, but take a while to cook.

Anonymous said...

I saw Tropic Thunder and thought it was pretty good. Robert Downy Jr. was GREAT in it (he plays a white guy playing a black guy). It is worth watching.

The best movie I have seen in a while though is Mongol (about Ghenghis Khan). If you can rent that one you should watch it.

Anonymous said...

I thought Tropic Thunder was a pretty stupid movie with a couple amazing performances in it. Worth $4.
I love steel cut oats but I'm not patient enough for them. They taste better and have a great texture. I just use rolled oats because you can nuke 'em. I wonder if you could cook a week's worth of the steel cut ones and warm them up each morning?
Leaving in two hours for sunny Pekin! Gonna watch the Blujays crush the *********'s (Bulldogs?) Gonna come home Sunday and not drive anywhere till spring!

Anonymous said...

Olive oil IS good for you. I probably added a year to my life in one pigout session.

Anonymous said...

Were they black olives or green olives? I've been eating green olives stuffed with bleu cheese, YUMMY and almost no carbs.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone have Pete and Mely's phone #'s? I just received my Christmas gift from Pete, and it's very cool...4 Peter Straub beer mugs and a Straub Beer cookbook!! I'm very excited to try it out.

Anonymous said...

Black olives. Like black licorice - loved by only the truly enlightened.

Here's a hint: Frank Costanza's "serenity now" chant actually helps a bit.

Josh just got the worst haircut. Even he is wary of been seen with it. It's short mostly, so the bangs are gone. But then the woman kept it longer in back and kind of long around the ears. I mean, it is cut around the ears but the hair is long enough where if his glasses get caught in the hair, the hair will stick over the frame. It's kind of like if a kid just cut off the bangs but did it straight.
I think we're going to buzz it today.

Anonymous said...

Does he look like the guys on Dumber and Dumberer? If so, you should spring for some fake teeth to go with it.

Happy Birthday Grandpa! Granny looks so lovely in that picture. Great to see everyone in Peoria last night for the game - Creighton beat the Braves. My New Year's Resolution is to make more efficient use of time. Mainly, so I can get more housecleaning done in between everything else. Mostly by giving the kids more chores...

Anonymous said...

I was watching Desperate Housewives tonight ( which for the record I don't often watch) and Jude popped up from the basement wondering what the show was. I was expecting him to ask me to turn to a kids show but he said he liked what was on. Scott asked him why he liked it and he said, "because the girls...they're so beautiful."

It sounds like you die hard bluejay fans were rewarded with a good game.

Forecast this week: tuesday high -1 wed +1. thurs -1. Just lovely.

Old Man Winter is about to dispense an old fashioned butt kicking with us providing the butt. Not much snow - only about 4-5 inches. However, heavy winds gusting to 40 will do the damage. After that a couple of days of subzero temps. Wonder if we might close for a day because of this.

Tom

Anonymous said...

Hey Em,

Did you ask Scott why he likes the show?

We watch it every week. It has declined. They need some fresh writers. I can usually predict what will happen next after every episode.

Tom

Anonymous said...

Mary - we got the same invite to that fancy schmancy party. To bad I don't own a black tie.

Tom

Anonymous said...

If you watched 24 last night please don't intimate any salient information. It's on my DVR to be enjoyed later today.

Thanking you in advance,
Tom

I wonder why the writers had Jack Bauer die in the very first episode. That other guy will never be able to carry the series.

Mom & Dad - Watch out!

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – A ninja, or at least someone dressed like one, is lurking in the shadows of Palm Beach County.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says a heavyset man with a visible potbelly and a ninja costume unsuccessfully tried to steal two different ATMs over the past two weeks.

Security video from the automated teller machines showed the unidentified man dressed in a black ninja outfit with a hood that showed only his eyes.

Authorities say the first attempt was made at a bank on Dec. 29 and the second at a Walgreens on Tuesday. Authorities did not say how the man tried to steal the machines.

Anonymous said...

Ninja outfit...that's funny!

Tom...Mike doesn't own one either...he might go as a priest...

If KLGA relied on walk-in traffic they would certainly tone down their weather "talk"...There could have been normal school/business activity today...LATE late tonight when the winds are 50 MPH and the wind chill is -100, then we should all stay home.

Last night on the Golden Globes "Brangelina Pitt" walked in the like royalty, expecting a sweep of awards...they didn't get one!! "Benjamin Button" was beat every time by "Slumdog Millionaire"
A low budget movie set in India, can't wait to see it!

Stevo's home now and says he shoulda took his hammer.

Jack Bauer was at the Golden Globes, so he's not dead yet...he's getting thin, though.

Yeah - "ATM: Always Take Muscle."

I am continually amazed at how rude some people have the ability to be, with no compunction. A woman has called me 10 times in the past hour, trying to reach someone not in his office.

OK, I'm heading off to Creighton now for my first class of the semester, to park a mile away and trudge through the blizzard that just started. Guess what I'm taking? Weather! I already know all I need to know about weather! It sucks!

Anonymous said...

Cathy..don't go, classes don't start 'till Wednesday!

FYI, there were really cheap flights from Omaha to FL last week. I don't know if they are still there, but given today's weather you might want to check them out.

I just heard my coworkers talking about the cold front moving in. Low of 48 and high of 70. I was laughing to myself. p

Anonymous said...

So yesterday I went to class but first I had to get my book and read the first two chapters so I parked and trudged through the blizzard only to find that last semester (when I didn't take any classes) they had cleverly MOVED THE BOOKSTORE from its previous location inconveniently stuck in the MIDDLE OF CAMPUS to a nice new building DOWN BY THE BASEBALL FIELDS. And of course my class was clear on THE OTHER END OF THE CAMPUS. All this while the wind was blowing hard enough to make my car skid sideways while I was driving over the bridge. All in all, a situation that called for lots of capital letters. Actually, the wind died down by the time class ended at A QUARTER TO TEN.

Anonymous said...

Did everyone's cars start this morning?

Anonymous said...

-14 in Algona...but NO WIND right now...3-5 more inches of snow tonight!!

Cathy, sounds like a cold night (you didn't mention the hill).

Anonymous said...

Yikes, Cathy! I surprised they didn't suspend the class. I didn't go to Children's Hospital. I figured if the wind can move almost move a parked car on the street in Council Bluffs, there iS NO WAY I am going over the bridge. You are brave.

I found cabbage on the list of cholesterol-busting foods and thought longinly of Joe's yummy creamed cabbage. I told Randy he would have to eat cabbage. But I also thought the way Joe made probably nullified the heart-healthy aspects of this delight. So I made it with Fleishman's light, potato starch and almond milk. This is not a method I would recommend. Yes, I will make this dish again. We cannot eat raw broccoli at every meal.

lisa

Anonymous said...

Well, on my diet I can have creamed cabbage (1 cup) and only real cream and cheese...low carbs!
Maybe for dinner. (Sorry Randy)

Anonymous said...

Have you tried cheerios? IF the commercials are true, it's good for lowering the big C.

Anonymous said...

Sorry so nosy, but here's another tip to lower chol. before his test...a spoonful of cinnamon every day (will lower the bad) and 2 glasses of wine every night (to raise the good chol.)

Anonymous said...

Only a week to go! Put Randy on a diet of dry Cheerios, cabbage soup and tuna! Or, better yet, canned salmon. You could make a nice salmon patty with egg whites and bran. But he can have all the boiled greens he wants for dessert.
We have a venison roast in the crock pot for tonight, cooking with lots'o onions, carrots and celery. I thought potatoes might absorb some gamy flavor so I'm cooking some yukon golds separately, although this deer is very not gamy. Ryan shot him with a bow and arrow. Smells delicious.

Hi Straubs!
Thought I'd finally fess up to reading the StrauBlog. (Joe J told me this would mean an end to the rampant gossip about me on here, but oh well. Also, it gives me a chance to say how much I like you — I really, really like you.)
Thought I'd inspire everyone's resolutions by linking to our Fitness Challenge* content over at Juice: http://dmjuice.com/fitnesschallenge
I'm basically in charge of this whole thing, so it's ironically making me GAIN weight because I'm so stressed about it. Lisa, there are "5 ways to eat broccoli" in here and there's also a "Drink this, not that" story. Stay tuned for more nutrition advice next week! Except for there won't be the video I spent an hour shooting tonight because, oh yeah, I forgot to press "Record." Now, where's my bag of chips?...
