Happy Birthday Desmond! You're my favorite son!

Des flew back to Chicago yesterday...his flight was to leave at 5:05 (dropped him off at 4:00)...it kept getting bumped in 20 minute increments...finally took off at 8:30...sad thing is, we live 5-7 minutes from the airport, we could have gone out for a little birthday cheer! Oh well, happy birthday!

Here is a little something I stole from Bennigans:

Happy Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday to you.

Happy birthday to my godson
Who I know likes to have fun
In looks he does not lack
Much better than John Cusack
Even when he has to hack.

Now that is poetry at it's finest

Happy Birthday Des!

Happy B-Day Des!
I'm completely upstaged by Monica's poem...so I won't even try and compete...
HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Happy Birthday Des!
Hope your day is fantabulous! :-)
Whatchoo gonna do?

Des - I just recieved an urgent cable from HQ. Now is not the time for frivolity. Your sector is in Def Con Red. Cease all periphial activities at once and commence intense counter-intelligence operations. The fate of Western civilization is on your shoulders.

Happy Birthday,
Tom

Poll:
1.) What's you favorite Mexican dish?
2.) When you eat out at a Mexican restaurant...what do you dislike the most and what do you like the most about your experience?
3.) Any Margarita ideas?

Anonymous said...

Happy Birthday, Des! I saw Andre Agassi on TV yesterday - you're way better looking.

I ordered flowers for Brooke Raimondi and they'll get them there today. If 12 people sent me $5 it would be covered. I had them put on the card "With love and prayers from the Straub cousins" so I hope that's OK with everyone.

Stevo has this computer screen set for a blind person, with huge letters. It looks like the AARP special-offer computer. The cursor arrow is 1/2 inch long. Such an extremist.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for taking care of that, Cathy. What did you order?
P

It's a "floor basket" with mixed flowers in pastels.

Happy Birthday, Des. Hope it's a good one - stay cool.

Fav Mex dish - Enchiladas or fajitas. A dish with beef, chicken, and cheese. With guacamole and pico de gaillo (sp?) on the side
Fav thing at the restaraunt - The mexican guys always pat Zane on the head and smile when he tries to talk to them in spanish. They give him the check when Ryan is not with us. Also, family friendly - cheerful music just loud enough to drown out the kids at the next table. Also, cheap.
Margaritas - my fave is lime on the rocks (not crushed slushie machine garbage)with chunky salt. MMMMMMMMMMMM. Put a slice of lime in it and maybe a few mint leaves. Pretty.

Thank you all for your well wishes. I took the day off work today and organized my life. Meaning: I shredded all the useless bills and such that had been piliing up on my coffee table, dining table and in my sock drawer. If they really want my money, they'll call and extort me.

For lunch, I went to a place called Flat Top Grill where you make your own stir fry dishes. The portions are unlimited and they serve great beer. So yes, Tom, I was able to do what I could to preserve the freedoms of the Western World.

My favorite "Mexican" dish is a Chicken Gordita. Besides that, I like Chimichangas (sp?). That's when I'm craving something bad for me. Otherwise, Pablano Stuffed Peppers are a little less...fried.

There's a "Mexican" place not too far from me called Uncle Julio's Hacienda. They have this blended margarita where they swirl lime and strawberry like a DQ drink or something. It's a little bit cheeze, but the mixture of flavors is fantastic...bitter and sweet. Like the General's Chicken.

I'm off to have ribs with my girlfriend. This is a birthday tradition. Except I ususally end up having ribs with a different girlfriend from year to year. But at least the ribs stay the same. Ed, remember Twin Anchors? Good ribs.

And thank you, Pat, for not posting that picture of me drunk on my 30th birthday pub crawl. I even prefer the queer monarch to that mug.

Love,

D

The guys are always looking for that lost rib...

Our friend mixes a margarita with a bit too much amaretto...it's YUMMY! Could be a signature drink!

We just had pizza with Mom and Dad and the Jayjack's...Joe was there....we heard all about his new job at the Register, starting on the 30th!

Anonymous said...

Thank you for taking care of the flowers Cathy.
Des, sounds like you had a good birthday.

Sean started pollinating corn today. A high of 86 and humid predicted. At least tomorrow is suppossed to be cooler.

Anonymous said...

Happy Birthday, Ty!
What kind of cake did your Mommy make?

Anonymous said...

A margarita with amaretto? You sure?

Anonymous said...

I'm positive about the amaretto...mixed in with a reular margarita...it's VERY good. I'll get the exact recipe.

Anonymous said...

Happy Belated Birthday to Peter K, Ryan O, Des L, and Ty O. All fine boys.

I've never heard of Amaretto in a margarita either. I've heard of Grand Marnier in a margarita and some people love it, but I hate Grand Marnier. (sp?)

My favorite mexican food is fajitas. I like the whole build your own concept and lots of places serve a chicken/steak combo that Scott and I split. OF course as the owners, you probably don't want people splitting. You could put it on the menu as fajitas for two and price it accordingly. The key is great pico de gallo, which I happen to make. I also really like fish tacos. Of course the fish can't be fishy. Grace's margatita kind of reminds me of mojitos which are so yummy, but cuban, not mexican. Also, kind of labour intensive for a bartender.

Cathy thanks for taking care of the flowers.

Bueno, Maria, muchas gracias por el recipito!
We're getting some good ideas from y'all and from my family/friends we emailed the question to.
Thanks and keep 'em coming! :-)

Happy Birthday to Ty!
Such a cuddly guy,
with a wild-man streak -
he's a Spiderman freak -
and a dangerous look in his eye.

I just talked on the phone to a nice Hispanic lady who wants to have all three of her boys make their first communion at once - the 4, 7, and 10-year-olds. I had trouble convincing her that the 4-year-old isn't old enough. I think she plans on going over my head. I'm sure she's envisioning matching tuxes. But she was nice. The worst part about this job is being the Man, man.

Anonymous said...

My favorite Mexican food is really fresh, really good, mild but tasty guacamole. The perfect foil to all the hot stuff.

Ty starts kindergarten this year! Now all Grace's years of cultivating good relationships with the teachers and principal will pay off! Actually, I think Ty's going to like school. But I'm sure there will be some interesting stories. Can't wait.

Anonymous said...

Oh, yes, and chimichangas. Deep-fried Mexican food - how can you go wrong? But I think Sarah's should do some kind of signature dish like, oh, thin-sliced brisket marinated and rubbed with vaguely Mexican-tasting spices with peppers and onions and some unique version of tortillas on the side to go with the delicious guacamole. And make up a name like Carnita de Sarah. Or, just oversized, cheap huge tacos on Taco Tuesday, or something. Run a special: taco, beans, rice (cheap!) with a Corona for a special price.

Anonymous said...

Yahhhhhhhh, my Uncle Danny was here and we talked about several ideas for Sarah's. He owned a successful restaurant years ago. He thought having a Tuesday Mexican Night was a good idea and I agreed as we do not have a Mexican Restaurant in town. Ironically, two days later we heard that the old Scoreboard Bar & Grill (formerly Happy Chef) was being turned into a Mexican Restaurant and owned by some icky guy outta Storm Lake. Go figure.
Anywhoot, we're gonna move forward with that Tuesday Special...sometime soon. :-)

Anonymous said...

Mely's Black Bean Soup on Taco night! It's a natural! And so-o-o-o good. You could make it not quite so hot and it would still be tasty. And name it after her!

Anonymous said...

You know, I kind of wish outer space guys would come and take over earth and make humans their pets because I want one of those basket bed thingys with my name on it.

Tom

Anonymous said...

I hope I get Tom's name for Christmas.

Anonymous said...

Eli is under the impression that he invented the term, "Taco Tuesday."

Anonymous said...

Why, Em? so you could buy him a new edition of the Bathroom Companion?

Anonymous said...

No, C. So she can buy him one of those little beds with his name on it. P

Just last week we went out for Mexican and I had Talapia (lightly breaded and lightly fried) with a slightly spicey tomato sauce over it and then pico de gallo over that. It was yummy. With rice.
I do not like the yucky vomit beans that come with so many mexican dishes.

You should make Mely's soup. I bet it's cheap to make.

Que?

Anonymous said...

Hola, Mely!
Por favor sendito mi tu soupito recipto.

Anonymous said...

Hola Mely. Bien.

Fish tacos are also excellent. Tilapia or Mahi LIGHTLY breaded should get rid of any fishy taste.

Anonymous said...

Catfish also makes a good taco when seasoned with Cajun or Caribbean spices. I would imagine one would have access to plenty of fresh catfish in Algona.

I just got back from writing class. It ends at 10 and I drink coffee during so it takes me a while to wind down.

Anonymous said...

Kudos to Emily on the fish tacos.

Anonymous said...

Is it just me? Or, do the words, "fish tacos," make you laugh? I don't know if I could order some, without laughing.

Anonymous said...

I'll make tilapia tacos on the farm if I can safely transport all that fish and someone will help me grill it. (note: I did not say fish tacos)

Anonymous said...

What's the fridge situation on the farm? I seem to recall that several people had extras. Is there room for two fridges?

Anonymous said...

Trying again (stupid blog!)...I like fish tacos but I have to put the name out of my head when I eat them. Really, except for the tortillas, they're not the same. They should be called "Piscaditas" or something like that.

Anonymous said...

Note: Emily just became a part of the, "cool crowd." Congratulations, Em!

Anonymous said...

There's not even room for one, if it's Monica's. The space is smaller than anyone remembered. I think it can't be wider than 30 or 31 inches, and to fit under the top cabinet I think it can't be any taller than about 5'8" (can't remember, but Stevo or Monica measured it) - anyway, shorter than our fridge, which isn't huge. I don't know where you'd put a second one, unless you tore out shelves in the pantry. Maybe in the shed?
How does anyone feel about replacing the broken-backed-but-cool-looking leather chair in the living room with a generic-looking brownish-gray recliner from a college student's apartment? Just asking. I don't know if that chair's fixable, but it looks so great.

Anonymous said...

Something about it just says "Uncle Keith."

Anonymous said...

"Fish Tacos." (hee, hee)

Anonymous said...

Note: Cathy just became a member of the, "cool crowd." Congratulations, Cathy!

Anonymous said...

Anything with chihuahua cheese. Yum.
And really good salsa and chips while u wait.

Anonymous said...

Piscaderos. Yum.

Anonymous said...

Okay, C, so I did it. I looked up pescadero and it says, "fish monger." Yuk! I should not have looked.

Anonymous said...

I think we should give some kudos to our pony express, here in Algona. Yesterday, at 3:15pm I sent out a $4500 check to Sysco in Des Moines. TODAY, before Noon, it was cashed at Farmer's State Bank! Talk about service! Of course, when we 2-day ship a Christmas gift and pay extra coin to, "ensure," that it gets there...it takes a week! Whadupwihdat? Ha, ha.

Anonymous said...

Em,
you can probably tilapia at Hy Vee in Leon or in Osceola.

Our Zuchinni crop is starting to come in. I'll be bringing zuchinni some thing or other.

Anonymous said...

Mmmmmmmmmmm. Make some zuchinni bread.

Anonymous said...

There's also the Super Target in the Southernmost exit of West Des Moines that may have a killer selection of fish. They might even have a small selection of killer fish.

Anonymous said...

Yum, fish from Target.

Thanks for the b-day wishes to Ryan and Ty. We went to - yes - Chuck E. Cheese last night. We have it figured out, though, if you get there at eight or later on a weeknight, it's okay. Very few people, music is turned down. Only one or two screaming toddlers. We had fun. I love ski-ball.
There was this little kid there who kept coming up and stealing my ski-balls and wildly throwing them (overhand) so they would bounce of stuff and almost hit people... then he'd climb onto the front of a ride one of the kids was on... no mom in sight. I think he was there last time, too. I bet his mom or dad works there and he spends hours there running around. He was younger than Ty. Braden strapped him into a ride and put one of her own tokens in, then unbuckled him when the ride was over.

Anonymous said...

Suprisingly, Cub Foods around here has the best and cheapest selection for fresh fish, and always a lot of Tilapia. I don't know about Cub foods in Des Moines though, but I bet there is one closer to the farm.

Has anyone every grown gypsy peppers? What did you do with them?

Anonymous said...

Put 'em in a covered wagon alongside the road.

Happy birthday Des!

Happy birthday Ty!

Des and Ty should go to Chuckie Cheese together next year to celebrate!

My favorite Tex Mex is fajitas. Yum. With lots of avacodo sauce on the side. Also Chilies rellanos (SP?) as long as they don't come out too oily. And I really like Taco John's super nachos!

Anonymous said...

hey des,
what's up with the cornwear site?

Anonymous said...

You haven't lived until you have tried Sister Sarah's award winning Chicken Fajita Nachos or their gut busting platter of Nacho Schmacho.

Truly yours,
Iron Chef Nokamori

Anonymous said...

Chili rellanos are my favorite, too!
Since (I think) there is still a decision to make about gettin Farm memorabilia, I vote for getting plastic stackable cups, since Ed is getting a keg. Right? And we can use this picture, but replace the hedgehod with a skunk. If that's possible...
http://www.janbrett.com/leprechaun_takes_a_hedgie_ride.htm

I think, emotionally, it will give us the power to overthrow the skunk family in the barn.

Anonymous said...

i picked that picture because it is just fruity enough to be funny

Anonymous said...

If Ty were here right now, he and I would totally tear it up at Chuck E Cheese. As a matter of fact, we'd kick it old school at Showbiz.

Anonymous said...

Braden should have left the kid strapped in and collected a token from every other patron to keep the kid out of their hair. Or, just left him strapped in and run off to play skeeball.
Just planted 12 "Guacamole" hostas around my walnut tree by the light, by the light of the silvery moon last night. Thanks, Mom and Dad, for the birthday moola. Tonight I try out my new Miracle Gro feeder.

Anonymous said...

I can probably turn that hedgehog into a skunk.

Anonymous said...

Oh, and let's go back to "pescaditas" for the fish tacos.

Anonymous said...

Here's a sweet skunk saga:
http://members.tripod.com/~animom/skunks.html

Anonymous said...

I Pepe le Pewed that hedgehod, then gave it a sweet Huffy and hockey stick. And of course gave the mouse a cape and the leprechaun a beer mug. I can't scan it in now, but am going to CB today (Andy's sister is getting married on Friday the 13th-scary). I will give it to my mom to fix, she is much more artist and creative than me. Maybe she can scan it in and email it to everyone to get this ball rollin'.

Anonymous said...

Man, I was thinking along the lines of doing something with tracing paper and probably coming up with a vaguely hedgehoggish skunk. How quaintly 19th-century of me.
Can you make the hockey stick into a croquet mallet?

Anonymous said...

Maybe, we could have a,"pin the tail on the hedgehog," contest in Decatur?

Anonymous said...

By the way, my longstanding dislike of turning nouns into verbs does not apply to the words Pepe le Pew, which make a very nice, multifunctional verb. You could say "I pepe le pewed that hedgehog" or "The dogs were sniffing around the barn and got pepe le pewed" or "Wow! Tom sure pepe le pewed that bathroom!" all of which provide a very accurate picture of what happened. Good job mangling, er, evolving the language.

Tomorrow we meet Grace in Iowa city and pick up Zane, Braden and Ty to come visit us for a week. But unfortunately, Stevo's Uncle Jim died yesterday and he's going to be a pallbearer at the funeral, so he'll be gone Monday and Tuesday in Kansas. Think I'll use my movie card to kill a few hours and maybe take the kids to the pool or the lake. It's supposed to be 95 every day next week. Think I'll buy a little pool with my (ahem) BIRTHDAY MONEY. Grace said they all packed their nightlights because they think our house is spooky.
The white-tailed squirrel from our neighborhood is in our yard a lot now - maybe he lives in our tree. I think he got struck by lightning.

Anyone with high blood pressure: (probably not a Straub; Mom's and Dad's are both 120/60 and mine was 116/60 last time I checked)should google this study: about an ounce and a half of dark chocolate was found in a pretty large European study to be just as effective as blood pressure medicine at reducing it. Proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Those of you who don't like dark as opposed to milk chocolate can grow to love it in a very short time. I bought Stevo some dark-chocolate covered cranberries and blueberries, providing a snack with magical health properties, as long as he only eats about 15 a day.
