We Get an Early Spring!
History of Groundhog Day
If the groundhogs see their shadows on February 2, get set for another 6 weeks of winter... at least that’s what they would have you believe.
The theory behind Groundhog Day (Shadow = another 6 weeks of winter, No Shadow = an early spring) originated in 18th century America and was based on the European tradition of Hedgehog Day (the hedgehog, a cousin of the groundhog, is not indigenous to North America). The tradition was that if the sun was shining on Candlemas Day (February 2) winter would stick around for another 6 weeks. However, if the sky was cloudy, spring would make an early appearance.
Hedgehog Day, itself, dates back to Roman times when the fate of spring was decided by hedgehogs seeing their shadows at night by the light of the moon. Interestingly, about 6 weeks after Groundhog Day is the vernal equinox and the traditional beginning of spring.
What did groundhogs have to do with it?
Not much really. But some people began to wonder why some animals, including groundhogs, would appear frightened after coming out of hibernation and seeing their shadows. What could it mean? Were they trying to warn about something? After a few consecutive years with what seemed like longer than normal winters, so began the belief that shadows on Candlemas Day meant bad news weather-wise. European settlers brought the theory to America and looked to the groundhogs every February 2 to predict the rest of winter.
The spirit and fun of Groundhog Day has caught on in many parts of the world including Canada. Some of the country’s most famed groundhogs include Ontario’s Wiarton Willie, Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam, and Alberta’s Balzac Billie. In the US, Punxsutawney Phil is the most notable groundhog weather prognosticator.

Not sure what the groundhog saw...or, didn't see. However, the report is that it will be warming up sooner rather than later! Woohoo! :-)
It's tee-time, again, we think! :-)
We are in the process of developing a tee for the Sister Sarah's St.Patty Parade After-Party! :-) Dan McCall has provided us with a list of the previous Grand Marshall's. This year is the 25th Anniversary. It's crunch time and we are posting this note to let you know that IF you would like to order one...you will have to email us at tomandnance@netamumail.com.
We would like to get them ordered and received in the next month as we are unsure how many to order and thought if we needed to get more before March 17th...we could re-order(?).
We're thinking of using a stonewashed green, cotton, short sleeved tee with pine green screening. The front will have a small Sister Sarah's Logo on the upper left breast (like where an Izod logo would be) and we will select a celtic design. The back will list the past 25 years of Grand Marshall's. The price of each tee will not exceed $10.
Unlike the Graveyard Games tee...we will not be contacting anyone for an order. If you would like one, simply, email us with your size(s) and please, mail out a check.
Thank you! :-)
I got an email from Diane S. and she mentioned that Aunt Doris and Aunt Ginnie were at the funeral home picking out caskets and Aunt Doris told Ginnie to hop in and see which one was most comfy. The funeral guy was mortified. (wouldn't that be appropriate for a mortician?) Also, Aunt Doris practically threatened the guy to get the parlor room she wanted even though another family had already wanted it. And, she got her way of course.
No changes to Uncle Jerry. Uncle Bob is there - Mom and Dad went directly to Aunt Mary Ann's last night.
Thank you!! But, I think it's St. Paddy? right? I dunno.
I think right about this time they were going to all be in Uncle Jery's room and will be stopping the IV drip...so, say a prayer.
The tee won't say St. Patty nor St. Paddy...but, thanks. :-)
The tees will come in children, men and women sizings. :-)
Does it come in wee leprechaun size, me bonnie lass?
Well, thank you for taking care of tracking them down.
I've heard nothing yet from NY.
P
I have a rough draft of the tee for St. Patty's. If anyone would like to view it...email and I will forward it to you. I will be placing my tee order on Monday the 5th of February. I may be placing a re-order later...but, I wouldn't count on that. Thanks. :-)
I got an email from Diane at 1:30 and there was apparently no change in Uncle Jerry's condition. There was some talk of all the Raimondis being there at 5:00 p.m. today to say good bye.
P
All I know is that he's been in the hospital all but 20 some days the past year, that he is on dialysis and couldn't breathe on his own.
FTR: I will be ordering Joe2, Mary, Don, Donny, Cathy and Steve-o shirts. No worries. :-)
If anyone feels like contacting, "non-blogging," siblings...that would be nice. Thanks! :-)
All the conditions are so similar to my friend's husband who died 2 weeks ago. NO blood pressure, kidney failure, no oxygen to the blood, on a respirator and sedation...they said his was heart failure.
His name was Jeff but he was always called "Seven" since he was little...did I already blog this?...but he was admitted to the hospital on the 7th day of 2007, to the 7th floor, he died 7 days later at the age of 49 (7x7) and they issued 7 death certificates!
I have to wait and see about when it would be. I MIGHT be going.
P
Mary Ellan~ If you can...Tom and you can stay at my folks, on Saturday, and they will drive you to the airport! :-)
Nance...I'm still not sure...But, I've still not seen Pat and Josh's house, who is closer to the airport? lus, Pat may be going, and then Tom could see her house and go to one of the "hip" neighborhood spots I keep hearing about.
I was talking to joe and he said a lot of the meds used to raise blood pressure kill the kidneys. It's an no win situation. I will not be going.
Monica
Apparently, Uncle Jerry was removed from the respirator at his own request yesterday. Today he was removed from all blood pressure and kidney medication and assistance at 5. They expected him to not survive more than a few minutes to a few hours. But, as of 10 east coast time he was still alive and not laboring for breath. Mom and Dad are back at Aunt Mary Ann's and will be waiting for a call. The Raimondis and Uncle Bob are at the hospital still.
Chances are the funeral will be tuesday or wednesday.
P
Patricia~ Tom asked me to come down and post this number based on your last question. Your Dad called from Aunt Mary Ann's #631-361-6186.
Thanks. Diane had just called me so I got the info I was looking for. So I deleted the post.

So...I'm going ahead with my plans for tonight...I'm off to Des Moines to watch the Jays cream Drake. Ed will be there as well as the Milbrath family, then dinner at Lisa's house afterwards...it should be a great evening!
We'll have our phones with us uf there is any news.
Monica...come on down!
Headline for Monday morning sports (after the Bears win):
GRIN AND BEAR IT...
PONYBOY LOSES...
We can't come tonight. We have a fund raising party to go to. We only go to parties where people want our money.
Monica
Monica~ We're having a party tonight and the band, "The Muscle Shirts," will be playing. We'll take your money! :-)
I'll bet the Milbraths, Ed and Mary had fun at the game. We just listened to it on the radio and it was a close one. I think the Jays ended up winning by 3 or 4.
St. Patty Tee:
Women's sizing may not be available. Please, order an alternate size in, "men's," if you are a lady. Thanks. :-)
Any word on Uncle Jerry?
I just got home from Des Moines, and talked to Dad on my drive back...he was calling from Aune Mary Ann's and asked me to blog the latest...
Uncle Jerry has been moved from intensive care to a regular room, the hospital needed his room...his breathing is slightly more shallow and his blood pressure has dropped slightly. Everything else seems to be the same. The lack of dialysis hasn't caused anything yet, but is bound to affect him eventually.
more below
Dad said Aunt Doris was VERY tired, but did get a good night's sleep last night. It's hard because of the Doctor's certainty that he would pass just minutes after taking out the different tubes, etc...
He is, of course, still on a feeding tube.
Dad and Mom were thinking of flying back to Florida if nothing changes today, maybe would go on Tuesday.
Chef Diane has been making wonderful meals and delivering them to Doris's house!
Uncle Bob flew to Texas to get his newest mission week started, but has help there so he can be back to Long Island within hours of a phone call.
The immediate Raimondi family is taking shifts at the hospital now, instead of all of them being there.
I think that was it...it's just hard not knowing.
Emily...that was a CRAZY game, the "arena" was packed, and about half were Creighton fans! Mike said that wasn't shown on TV, they just showed Drake fans...did the announcers on radio mention it?
Ed got great tickets, we were among Creighton fans, we were all cheering alot.
The Milbrath's feed us before and after the game with wonderful food!
And, they displayed their entire liquor cabinet on the dining room table, so, of couse we had to try some of it.
Even the girls were drinking soy milk out of brandy glasses, very elegantly!
I had fun, we should all go next year!
I'm gettting ready for the big game...I'm drinking a Smithwick's and making homemade pizza...go Bears!
The lines at the grocery store were crazy! One lady was buying about 20 lbs. of frozen (uncooked) chicken wings...I wanted to go to her party. Her cart was packed full!
We are having a windchill of -38 tonight. A low of -23. I love winter.
Monica
Yeah that sounds just about the same as our days here. Do they cancel school for that low temp?
I think we reached a high of 4 below today. My car started right away, though, and it's unprotected. Yay for 95 toyotas!
p
It's the coldest in years! Aren't you jealous Emily?
4 below for a high in Madison today, it'll warm up to 1 below tomorrow. wind chills around 25 below.
turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.
I think it is over. Indianapolis just intercepted. Rex threw a bad pass. Can you believe that?
p
Yup. 20 below this morning. Not wind chill.
p
Those three degrees could be the difference between life and death.
p
School's are having two hour delays. Yea Colts! That coach needed to win.
60 here today.
Let's see. That's either Cathy from a ship or Emily or Pete or Mely.
Ok - so how can Payton Manning be the MVP of the Super Bowl when he and his running back mess up a hand off and Payton sits there and looks at the ball while the Bears recover it? I don't think he should be MVP of anything ever for that one. I don't care how many straight games he has played in - he is a pansy.
The Bears deserved to lose for making Rex Grossman thier QB.
-6 this morning here. Nice!
Uncle Jerry passed away about 2:15 this AM, Peacefully & surrounded by his family.
Wake tonight & tommorrow afternoon & night - funeral Wednesday... so I hear.
I'll email when it is set in stone.
can you pass this to Tom & the others?
THANKS
That was from Diane Sender.
p
HERE ARE THE PLANS... just spoke top the nice lady at Vanellas:

funeral mass 10:30 am at ST. ANTHONY's
VANELLA'S FUNERAL HOME in Oceanside on Long Beach Road 516-766-4424
I'm planning on going. I would get in Tuesday evening, might be able to catch the end of the wake if I don't check any luggage. I will leave Wed afternoon/evening.
Looks like I can fly american into laquardia for around $300 including fees/etc.
Who else is going and where are you staying?
Monica will be ordering flowers from all the "children of Joe and Mary Straub"...we thought around $100...so everyone is to semd Monica $10...ASAP, thanks.
She's just going to go ahead and order them without input, probably deep reds and purples...hope everyone agrees!
My favorite memory of Uncle Jerry, besides for the fact that he was such a NICE guy...driving around Oceanside in a station wagon, windows down, and he cranked the radio up real loud for Jim Croce's "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown"..and he was laughing and singing along! I was 17 and vising for a month, I felt very urban chic.
Thank you Monica.
P
I've been checking flights on and off for the past 2 hours...everything is about $150-200 more than the weekend rates. I've always heard that if you include a weekend date on a flight it's much cheaper...I'm waiting to see if Southwest has a DING.
Also, my friend says Midwest Express has sales on Tuesday morning.
I got this info from Diane:
Here are some phone numbers to share with anyone needing lodging or picking up - please share:
SUSAN home 516-496-4664 cell 516-848-4820
DIANE home 516-496-0701 cell 516-319-2407 work 516-334-5800
AUNT GINNIE & CATHERINE 516-364-1883
CATHERINE'S cell 516-996-2876
I am sure we can find room for anyone who needs. My mom has 2 rooms, I have a futon and a couple of floor mattresses and a REALLY comfy couch. Susan has a spare room as well.
FYI
Flowers have been ordered. A spray on a stand with lots of purple and red floweres. Card reads: Uncle Jerry and family,
all our thoughts, love and prayers are with you.
The children of Joe and Mary Straub
PS- they should be there in time for the wake tonight
PSS- weird thing is Gerry Staub called when I was on the phone with the florist. So he knows now.
Monica
WEDNESDAY 10:30 am
Wednesday 10:30 is the funeral.
Here's a sign 'o the times...in searching for flights I found a gay travel site through travelocity...round trip from Omaha, includes 2 nights in Manhattan only $329. includes all taxes. 2 people (of course)have to purchase, and they don't sell just the flight. But that's still $150 CHEAPER THAN ANYTHING ELSE I'VE FOUND.
I can be gay for the right price!
I just told my gay (male) friend about this, and he laughed and said "It pays to be on the bus, honey..besides all the air waiters are gay, and we take care of our own!"
Hey all,
I hope you don't mind me jumping into the fray, but your dad gave me the address to your blog and I thought I'd check it out (it's fantastic, by the way).
If anyone decides to come out and needs a lift from the airport, I'm available. My phone number is 917-776-2223. I have a few days off from
work and a lot of time on my hands, and I'd be more than happy to take a ride to pick anyone up. Please just let me know.
I hope you're all doing well.
Rob Zielinski
Hi Rob,
Good to hear from you.
Feel free to join the fray anytime.
Monica
Hey Rob! Nice to hear from you!Hope you are well. What's your email?
Pat
By the way, here is Aunt Doris' address:
86 Vernon Ave
Rockville Centre, NY 11570-5523
P
I tried to make my ticket route me through JFK. I can do it but it costs $1200.
P
I cannot get away. Randy is out of town today so who would get the girls to and from school, etc?
Thanks, Monica for handling the flowers. We'll get something to you soon.
Hi to Rob and any other cousins who take this opportunity to drop in!
Hi Straubs,
It's Diane... Just wanted to let you know your flowers are LOVELY... great colors. I'd take a picture for you but I lost my cellphone and don't know how to shut off the shutter noise anyway. Nice to see your parents - just wish I could see them somewhere else!
-D
I know...
I want to come out so badly while so many family are there...
Randy and the girls need to come out, too.
My e-mail is robz_45@yahoo.com. I've been spending some time with your parents the past few days and it's a pleasure. As usual Uncle Joe's sense of humor is flawless.
Rob
We watched the Super Bowl on the ship - they have a sort of big nightclub/theater and they set up long tables with steak sandwiches, tacos, spring rolls, devilled eggs, super nachos, pizza, wings, and all the $5 beers you care to drink. The audience split was about 50/50. Manning won MVP because he was the MVP. You can be most valuable even if you make a mistake. It's when you make the same mistake over and over that your team doesn't win. Poor Rex. I met a guy in the airport in Atlanta who went to college with Lovey Smith and lived just two doors down the hall from him - said he was just what you see on TV - nice, soft-spoken, civil, trustworthy and smart. Even allowing for sportscaster hyperbole, it's nice to see two nice-guy coaches rising to the top. I like nice; it's...nice.
