Iowa Winter Storm Warning from 6pm tonight until 6pm Sunday...I think.
Calling for rain, sleet, ice, winds and 7-13 inches of snow!

Happy Birthday Liam!!

Is that a skateboarding hat? It looks cool.

Liam,
8 is great.
so don't be late
get up, make your bed
On with the hat to save your head,
then jump on that board and make it skate!

What a handsome face!!!!
Are you having a party to celebrate?

Liam -
With eyes prettier than Newman's
and a smile like a star
and more height than most humans
I'm sure you'll go far.
Happy Birthday!

Tom, I heard that comment several times (about the lying) so I don't think the press is hiding it. I don't think they would be able to resist such delicious stuff. I agree that the press is stirring stuff up about the whole story - the teasers always read "Clinton and Obama camps trade jabs" or something like that... to my knowledge Obama at least hasn't said anything incendiary. I hope he keeps his cool and doesn't let advisors talk him into trying to strike back.

Address list alert: Molly'scell # is wrong (probably my fault). The correct # is 712-310-7594'

Stevo & I are heading up to Vermillion to see Martha's brother in a play at USD and hang out at the winery with her parents. Hope we don't get stuck up there by the weather.

Anonymous said...

WHERE BETTER TO GET STUCK THAN A...WINERY?! ;-<> :-)

Anonymous said...

Hmmmm.....

A brewery???

Have a fab time. Of course you will get stuck. When's the wedding?

Anonymous said...

MMMMM-2 for 1 filet-o-fish at McDonald's. Pretty good too, although (I could be wrong) they seem to be smaller than they used to be.

Anonymous said...

TTTRanssssssfatty fish!!watch out.

Tom, you could advertise "no trans fats".

Anonymous said...

Hey, maybe you should ask Brian Richardson's band to play at Sarah's. "All the way from Omaha(Council Bluffs)"
I hear they're pretty good, and kind of blues/rock.

Happy Birthday Liam! Great picture!!
Mom, are you staying in the Flintstone's room at the winery? Ty talks about that room all the time. Did I tell you he has imaginary friends? They came with us to George and Cathy's the other night, but they waited out in the car. There are about a dozen of them but Banshee and Fred are the ringleaders. Am I wrong to be just a teeny, tiny bit creeped out by the imaginary friends?

Anonymous said...

How can McDonald's be bad for you? And fish, too. How can fish be bad for you. I took a look at the box and 1 filet-o-fish has 1 gram trans-fat. Is that a lot? Should I be worried? Should I purge real quick to get rid of them? Please please just take it away!! Must...Throw...UP!

Anonymous said...

Ha that's funny. Tom would you bring your sword?

Anonymous said...

Don't purge...I'm impressed it's only one gram!!
As your penance, take Communion to the shut-ins!

Anonymous said...

happy birthday Liam.

do you have imaginary friends too?

What sort of fool am I? It's almost March and I'm excited for the 10-16 inches we are expecting this weekend. And I don't even have four wheel drive!
It'll be more snow than we've accumulated all winter.

March 24 for the cheeto party?...if you guys want to get stuff together I can send it to Ellen G...I don't know if we can come, it's the week after we'll all be there for St. Pat's!

Oh, we'll be in Chicago, I hope, Phelan's band has their first gig!

Liam's party was a hit! All 4 boys (Gibson Behr, Ryan Kenyon, Logan Capesius and Grant Buscherfeld)were able to attend. Thankfully the party was yesterday and not today as we may not have had such a good turn out with the weather being so icky. The boys came right in and ate from a Notre Dame cake...of course the first kid that saw it...recoiled in horror and expressed his love for the Hawkeyes. As they all sat at the table looking like angels...one kid (L.C.) exclaimed something about, "sex," and the table grew quiet. I said, "Hey, clean it up," and then, they resumed laughing and burping like sweet little boys. Problem averted. :-) They opened presents right after. I bought all the boys a little Lego Racer and they built those together in the basement. Cool thing as the level of concentration it required...settled them down quite a bit. They had races and then, shot each other up with Nerf shot guns and played basement-basketball (scary). Pizza Hut at 5:30 and then, the little angels were all picked up at 6:30pm. :-) WooHoo! Unfortunately, mid-way through the party Eli felt sick and consequently threw up 4 times last night. C'est la vie! ;-<> :-)

According to The British Medical Journal, the following seven alcoholic beverages produce the worst hangover symptoms:

Brandy
Red wine
Rum
Whiskey
White wine
Gin
Vodka
Do note there is a wide variation within some types of drinks, especially wine. Check the country of origin. Wines that come from countries where there is very little climate change actually contain more hangover-inducing compounds when the wine was made in a bad season.

Ignore the caps lock. Joe 3, thanks for the spot bot reviews. I read some reviews of it on line and everyone there raved except that if your whole carpet is dingy (like mine) then you just have a paper plate sized clean spot. It would be ideal for one with nice, new carpet to just treat stains.

We are back from the Creighton game!!! Yes they won...it was senior night...all the seniors walk onto center court, 15,000 fans are clapping,I am certain now that "usual" can be the norm (Black kid, no family) my fav. player Porter walked onto the court with "a friend" all the other players had their Moms and Dads, this kid is from California, his parents probably can't come ...altho Tolliver said it was the first game his Dad had been to (Dad lives in Kansas!) Nate Funk and Tolliver both cried...Tolliver captured the crowd, and then so did Funk when he said his best fan died last January, his Grandpa from Carroll. It was a nice tribute.

We are snowed in now...we're watching "Hoosiers".

Anonymous said...

I really like Tolliver. He has a 3.5 gpa and he is a finance major.

we've gotten around 6 inches of snow so far, and this morning it changed to a 'wintery mix' of snow, rain, and freezing rain. it's supposed to be in the 40's by wednesday. i love the midwest.

We got 12 inches of snow and it's softly snowing right now.

i love beaches and sun.

I just went for a walk in the snow with Seamus, to the park, kids were sledding, it is really pretty. I took some photos, I'll try to download them (Mike will)...(I'm thinking of bailing on my open house) don't tell anyone!
They said on the news that Cedar Rapids is without power...the Kennedy's thought that would happen.
I going to go bake some bread.

Anonymous said...

i walked to a restaurant about a half mile away this morning for brunch with a neighbor. it's a popular place, and we'd usually have to wait 20 minutes to get a table at the time we got there. today we were the only 2 people in the place.

Anonymous said...

Sarah's only stayed open for two hours on Saturday. Friday wasn't great yet not terrible...Saturday was pathetic. Oh well. :-) I like the snow and think snowy days are cozy...made a double batch of pea soup with a honey baked ham bone...mmm! ;-)

Eli and Liam had the stomach flu this weekend. Well, Eli's recovered and now Liam is sick. Can't wait for Summer.

Anonymous said...

Nance I made pea soup also and dug out the bread machine. We were without electricity for 22 hours. No electricity is fun for about an hour and we played Operation with the kids and cards then it starts getting cold. Then you can't flush your toilets. Then you can't cook anything. So you go to bed at 9:30 and wake up really early to shovel snow. We went to breakfast at Happy Chef where none of the women had makeup on and all the men were in snow suits. Everyone wanted coffee NOW!!! Then you pray that your basement won't flood because your sump pump isn't working. It all worked out in the end though. We got invited to dinner at our Lebanese friends house where she cooked massive amounts of Lebanese food(they had electricity) When we came home the lights were on. Yeah! But there is no school tomorrow beause some parts of town still don't have electricity.

Anonymous said...

i made a hot lentil/chicken sausage dish for dinner, then i pre-made banana/blueberry pancake batter with for breakfast tomorrow.

16 inches of snow so far here in Madison.

It's so pretty out.

Glistening white branches against a clear blue sky.

Yesterday Mary Laurel said something akin to this: It's almost too beautiful to look at.

What a weekend we had. Randy was on the board of a the Thresholds festival... something to do with respecting diversity and saving the planet. We saw Ritchie Havens in concert (John Bradley was there with wife #2!) on Saturday and on Sunday something so near and dear to my heart it almost makes me weep: Jean-Michael Cousteau was there for a lecture and video. Get this... his flight got grounded in Kansas City (I think) so he rented a car on Saturday afternoon/evening and DROVE THROUGH THAT MESS in order to be there for the talk on Sunday.
It was a wonderful weekend.

Thanks for sending the fish taco recipe again, Emily... it may take some convincing for me to try to talk my family into trying it, though!

I stepped on a 30 + year old carpet tack strip last night and need to go to the doctor today. No, I'm not stupid. I did not identify it as such because it was in a plastic bag on the bathroom floor.

Anonymous said...

I shoveled the entire driveway because Mike took my open house...hooray.
I made raisin cinnamon bread and then a basic whole wheat loaf.
Ed, how did your pork turn out?

Anonymous said...

Creighton alums...did any of you have a Dr. Patricia Fleming for class while at Creighton? She has been named the new Vice-President of St. Mary's, Notre Dame!

Lisa, here's a poem for Mary (although it's about fall, not winter):
O world, I cannot hold thee close enough!
Thy winds, thy wide grey skies!
Thy mists that roll and rise!
Thy woods, this autumn day, that ache and sag
And all but crush with color! That gaunt crag
To crush! To lift the lean of that black bluff!
World, world, I cannot get thee close enough!

Long have I known a glory in it all,
But never knew I this:
Here such a passion is
As stretcheth me apart. Lord I do fear
Thou'st made the world too beautiful this year.
My soul is all but out of me - let fall
No burning leaf; prithee, let no bird call.
Edna St.Vincent Millay (1892-1950)

Anonymous said...

That is a beautiful poem. How was it at your fingertips?

Mary likes to get out of the car (in nicer weather) and lie upon the grass to watch the sky go by.

Hard to believe such a little wind-up could have this quiet love inside her.

Who has snow days today?

Anonymous said...

It's one of my favorites. Notice all the punctuation.

Anonymous said...

We keep it at 68 during the day and 62 at night so really not all that bad. It just seems bad in the morning when you have to get out of a warm toasty bed and go reset the termostat to warm up. I wish we had a programable one. We are now at an R30 in our attic. What ever that means.

Anonymous said...

Programmmable ones cost about $30. You should go buy one. We do the same you do, but it clicks on around 5:00 a.m.

everything is in decline these days... it wasn't so long ago that the fall guys were kind of bad asses. you had your Ollie North's, your Jack Ruby's. now you get guys named Scooter taking the fall.

Anonymous said...

By "you" you mean the Republicans, right?
They had Ollie North, maybe Jack Ruby, and for sure Scooter.

We (the Dems) just had Bill. All he did was balance the budget and one other "b" word.

Anonymous said...

We have a programmable thermostat. It comes on from 6 to 8 in the morning and 5 to 11 at night, and otherwise it keeps it at 62. It has separate weekend settings and a vacation setting, etc. Good deal. Unfortunately, it can't address the fact that, even with a ceiling fan in the upstairs landing, when it says 70 in the living room it's about 67 in the kitchen and family room, where we spend all our time, and about 73 upstairs, where nobody is. I used to like it at about 65, but I guess I'm getting old. I love it cold at night, though. I think 60 would be about right, but that's too cold for Stevo.

Anonymous said...

My guess is that Pat would win the Lenten thermostat penance competition.
My friend Mary Ann has a studio up in her attic, which is neither heated nor cooled. She put in a little wood stove to heat it in winter and I told her that she should put in a little rooftop air conditioner for summer and she said she likes to feel the heat of summer. It has to get up to 110 up there- she's nuts.

Anonymous said...

I want a studio. But i want it well heated.

I agree with your last statement, but I am willing to blame that Republican Congress for the "Contract on America" that legitimized meanness and greed. That Gingrich-led gang of well-dressed thugs were arrogant and pandered to the worst impulses in all of us. It will take years to undo some of their damage.

Last night we ate at this really expensive restaurant. Josh sang karaoke in the school cafeteria for $40. It was some hiphop song and his classmates didn't think he'd do it for the money they put up, and he did. At the end he ran around the room high-fiving everyone. Apparently the school has karaoke once a week. This is the secodn time he's done it for money. He must really be making a fool of himself if they'll pay to see it again.
So we went out on them.

Regarding the food bank auction at Sarah's the weekend after St. Pat's:

Ladies: Dya wanna each bring a $5 -$10 item to put in a basket... kind of an instant girl party theme? Please note that Iowa dram laws are strict. No wine baskets, please (Tom would need an off-site license in order for there to be wine basket sales)

I found a cute little wire vase.

Anonymous said...

Tom-I heard your ad re: dying and it sounded pretty good.

Anonymous said...

Lisa - do you have a theme in mind? Spa basket, chocolates and goodies basket, household stuff or what? I think it's a good idea.

Movie night baskets are cool too. My girlfriend makes them as gifts for kids. She fills 'em with a movie, micro-popcorn, dots, junior mints,whoppers...you get the idea. ;-)

Not, neccessarily, suggesting it for the auction...just sharing a cool gift idea. :-)

Thank you Monica and Cathy for you tee checks. :-)

So, are you all expecting lots of snow again, too? We had 13.5 last storm and now they are saying this next one looks to be even be larger.

I think we're suppose to get a similar storm, but on a smaller scale from last weekend. I think the forecast is 6 inches...but, I'm not sure.

Anonymous said...

i think this one is supposed to mostly miss us here in Madison, but as little as 40 miles north is supposed to get pounded. we're looking at rain tomorrow and then maybe an inch or 2 on Friday.

Who the heck IS Sister Sarah, anyway?

I never really thought about it before. A wayward nun, perhaps?

Pat, maybe this could be the subject of a new thread.

Anonymous said...

"I agree that Clinton's fiscal policies were sound. However, he was just a reactionary president who would change his policy with the polls."

Altering policy based on what the people want??? Sounds radical and a little crazy. Then again, this whole democracy thing is just crazy enough to work.

Somebody get Premier Bush on the phone!

;)

I still want to know who this Sister Sarah is.

Anonymous said...

Theme...

Hmmm...

I don't want to do a hussy basket because I don't want anyone looking at me funny while purchasing items for it.

Chocolates and goodies sound nice. I'll skip the vase and get the box that mixes up mini cheesecake balls. We could use some nice coffees, a package of cute paper cocktail napkins, etc.
Does this sound ok? Please let me know.

Anonymous said...

The story behind Sister Sarah is a boring one...better to make one up. :-)

Anonymous said...

Hm.

I like the wayward nun. Maybe she was Dutch immigrant who escaped occupied Amsterdam after hiding Jews in her convent. After getting here, she turned to the bottle and became a blugrass vocalist (with an accent). She was stripped of her habit for falling in love with and having a plutonic, albeit passionate relationship with the owner of a local tavern. She died of kidney failure and the tavern owner opend the the bar in her honor.

Anonymous said...

Ron Rale and "Krista" (Howard K. Stern's attorneys) were just being interviewed on Court TV. Krista thought she was talking, "off camera," to the anchorman and she told him that she would only continue the interview if he asked her, "what the hell Virgie Arthur..." They abruptly cut the camera and the audio...too funny! ;-)

~Nance.

Anonymous said...

Remember that song, "Sister Christian," by Night Ranger? Perhaps, we could change it up a bit and it could become the Sister Sarah's jingle?

Anonymous said...

A plutonic relationship.
That is an even better story than a platonic relationship.

Anonymous said...

Night Ranger is probably desperate enough for cash to let you do it:

Sister Sarah's Oh the time has come
for some prime rib or some salmon today... ok.

Anonymous said...

What about "Sarah Smile" by the always popular Hall and Oates.

We just got back from the Dr. He said if Jude still has a fever on Friday morning, he'll have to have an x-ray to rule out pneumonia. Keep your fingers crossed.

Monica, I need your address again. Can somoeone please send me the address list again? I thought I had saved it, but I guess I didn't.

Anonymous said...

Oh Sarah, I'm in fear for my life from the long arm of the law
Law man has put an end to my running and I'm so far from my home

Anonymous said...

Ohhhhhhh Liam had to have a chest x-ray once...or, was it Eli...or, both? Nevertheless, it's no biggie. However, it is something for Mommy to prepare for. They take off their shirt and seat 'em on a table and place a clear, plastic tube around their upper body with their little arms up in the air. Made me tear up. But, truly, it's okay. :-) Eli had pneumonia when he was, like, four months old. They gave him penicillin and he had an allergic reaction to it...broke out in an all over body rash. After that, an on-call nurse said to give him infant Sudafed and he was awake for 36 hours...it was awful. I...I mean >he< lived through it though. :-)

Hmm...did that help? If not...never mind.

Anonymous said...

Sean is allergic to penicillin also. I always thught it was a Kennedy trait(Joe's niece is also allergic to it). Yeah the chest x-ray thing is awful looking. But he will live through it. Thomas had to have one because they thought he had a tumor on his rib. Turned he just had a funky shaped rib.

Is a plutonic relationship still a relationship or has it been downgraded by social scientists to a pseudo-relationship?

Dad called with a funny story...He, Mom, Pete and Mely were all at the beach yesterday...after going into the water he and Mom and Pete were laying out (Mely was down by the water collecting shells). Dad turned his chair around to catch the sun on his face, and he turned into a pair of bare breasts less than 2 feet away...2 women right next to them were changing right there on the beach! So, he quickly turned around, and then turned back only to see a bare butt in his direction! She was taking her time undressing...what a surprise...And then Mely saw 2 other women stripping down, as well. It's the beach closest to their condo, it just re-opened (since the hurricane) Maybe it has a new name!

Braden had to have an X-Ray of her bladder once. The nurses were really nice and had a DVD player for her to watch. She flashed them from under her hospital gown and they all howled (she was about three). Turned out she was fine.
I hope Jude's okay. Poor little guy.
Any time I make an appointment to take the kids to the doctor, Ryan calls me a hypomomdriac. Totally unjustified.
Em, tell Jude what's going to happen before you go, so he has an idea of what to expect. It might be a little less scary if you talk about it beforehand. If you have to, call a nurse at the doc's office and ask her to explain the procedure to you so you know, too.

Emma had to have a chest x-ray this fall when she had mono and pneumonia. They wanted to know all about bones and seeing inside of you (but they are older.) She stood up and stood still and did quite well and it was not scary for her a bit. If you put on a lead apron, they will probably let you stay with him.

School's letting out early today! But you guys in Algona have seen a LOT of that.

Regarding the basket: It might be nice to report in what is being bought so that we have an idea of what might be needed.

He always would sing while doing the dishes, even while bringing the clean dishes out to the main part of the cafe (main counter, etc) singing all the while. They told him to stop singing, but he couldn't help himself, I guess. So, they fired him...and I was not a happy baker after that!

The cold is cutting into my training for the Brew Run, which is a relay race from Boulevard Brewerey in Kansas City to Free State Brewery in Lawrence. My leg is about five miles, and I have to cross a river in a boat at one point. The race in April 1, and I'm barely up to two miles right now.

By the way, I think the "runner's high" is a myth put out there by runnners because they don't want to be miserable on their own. Has anyone honestly had a runner's high?

I've been running high.

Definition of runner's high: The euphoria you feel when you make yourself sick...doing something healthy.

I live in Topeka, Kansas -- where the women are casually beautiful.

I have indeed had a runner's high, but it took being able to run about 7 or 8 miles before i felt it. Maybe it was just lightheadness.

Wouldn't it just be easier to smoke some dope?

I'm having a caramel apple for dinner. Jude is feeling much better. No fever today but still a nasty cough. He hasn't slept for more than 2hours at a time for the last 3 days. Today I dosed him with benadryl and he took a 4 hour nap. I feel a little guilty, but I think I am going to do it again tonight - so I guess not that guilty. It helps his nose and he needs the sleep and so do I.
It's been in the hight fifties the last few days here. I would like to see all the snow, just for a couple days.

Emily, why are you having an apple for dinner? Don't feel the LEAST bit guilty for letting Jude have a good sleep! Have a nice glass of wine and a decent meal!
You don't miss the snow, repeat what I say!!!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I just put Jude down. He seemed ready for a good sleep. We'll see. It wasn't just an apple I had for dinner, it was a caramel apple and they are so good. There is a candy shop three blocks from our house and they sell all these diff kinds of gourmet apples. we've tried a few kinds, but the best is just plain old caramel.

Our dog cringed when you said, "you put Jude down." Hope he is feeling better. We have had blizzard conditions here for the last day and there are still 48,000 people around here without power after a week. Our day without power wasn't too bad.
