Yes, Des lives in a hotel lobby...actually that might be the beautiful bar room at Ellen's wedding repection.
I talked with Des and he's in L.A. for Dockers and staying next to the Santa Monica pier and tonight will eat at one of his favorite places, The Ivy...he'll have a cajun martini and lobster risotto...so I guess traveling for business on your birthday isn't all bad!!
So, they took out our trees at 6:30 this morning...5 city workers 2 city trucks and a skid loader, about an hour Planting the trees (which is MUCH harder) 1 nephew, 1/2 hours...priceless!
EVERYONE is invited to a birthday party for Cathy on Saturday July 18, 2009 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at our house in Council Bluffs. This is the weekend that RAGBRI kicks off in C.B. and also RIBFEST on Saturday so there will be lots of fun events to go to as well. The theme for the party is Hawaiian so feel free to dress accordingly. Food and refreshments will be provided.
Please, NO PRESENTS, as per Cathy. Just come and enjoy some good food and Cathy's courtyard garden and help Cathy celebrate her 39th birthday.
Lodging available for out-of-town guests on a first come first served basis.
Des also shares a birthday with OJ Simpson and Tom Hanks.
The trees were part of a city tree progam...the city will pay up to $65 a tree (from an approved list)I chose small fruitless snowcrabs...SO, after the city council decided we needed 8 more inches of width in our parking, the trees had to go! We had the option to purchase them,(and plant them inside our sidewalk) but we said no! I would never pay $65. for a tree that size! They came at 6:30 a.m. because our city administrator is a %$#@! and he didn't want people driving by and watching!! I asked that they do it after the weekend because we had family and friends coming, but he said NO!!
There's an article in today's paper about the trees...also an article with a photo of us accepting an art donation.
It apparently reduces Hurricane activity. So, some new friends invited us over for dinner on Sunday. They are doing a sort of Iron Chef dinner for us. We each choose an ingredient and they'll make a total of 4 dishes, two including each ingredient. Josh chose nutmeg. I feel like my decision should then complement his, but I had been thinking either lemongrass or chocolate or basil. Now I can't decide....I suppose I should just name something and leave it up to them. Maybe I should just name some hot spice of some sort. p
The Register cut 36 employees today, but luckily neither Joe J nor I were among them. Joe lost his best friend on the copy desk and features lost two writers. Really sad day at work.
Sorry Brianne, and Joe, for the tough day. I'm relieved you both kept your jobs, I've been watching the news about Gannett. Tough times, tough industry.
but everyone loves bacon. happy birthday to des and ty. cool guys both. des- scott and i went to the ivy a few times when we livrd in santa monica and had a fun fund. i always got the fried chicken for a ridiculous price of course.
First it was called Judi's deli. Then the restaurant was sold and the name was changed to Blue Plate. I am proud to say that I was one of only two front of the house employees the new owners kept.
The word jaywalk is a compound word derived from the word jay, an inexperienced person, and walk.[4] No historical evidence supports an alternative folk etymology by which the word is traced to the letter "J" (characterizing the route a jaywalker might follow).
In towns in the American Midwest in the early 20th century, "jay" was a synonym for "rube", a pejorative term for a rural resident, assumed by many urbanites to be unsophisticated. Such a person did not know to keep out of the way of speeding automobiles.[5] Originally, the legal rule was that "all persons have an equal right in the highway, and that in exercising the right each shall take due care not to injure other users of the way."[6] In time, however, streets became the province of motorized traffic, both practically and legally. Automobile interests took up the cause of labeling and scorning jaywalkers in the 1910's and early 1920's; a counter-campaign to name (and disapprove of) "jay drivers" failed.[7]
HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOU HANDSOME FELLAAAS. we were actually just verbally disciplined for JAYING by a sweaty traffic guard when walking the freedom trail in boston (a line that you follow thru all the history of the city) then i saw paul revere's grave. i also just went to the supreme court yesterday (we were in DC)...it's really all marble!
We have a rogue plant growing in our front garden. I almost pulled it and then suspected it was a sunflower. As it's continued to grow, I'm almost certain it's a sunflower. It's in the perfect place bc it's right next to the mailbox where I can support it with twine. I don't know how it got there. The boys (1st grade?) brought home a sunflower seedling and they never really grew much. Funny how a seed can be dropped and implanted with no effort nor watering and do so well...when others that you nurture...just wither and die. I'm wondering if it blew from our roll-n-grow garden from last year or the birds dropped a seed from our feeder?
We just discovered how yummy turnips are. I get them from the farmers market almost every week and boil them (two bunches),with one small onion, some water and at least half a stick of butter. If we have asparagus we put that in, too. It tastes like a summer version of cooked cabbage. So good!
Lime and nutmeg sound like it could be good on some kind of Moroccan themed dish. Ohh, maybe on big turkey legs? With couscous? That would be delicious.
I did get a jay waliking ticket when we lived in Santa MOnica. I was so mad. I was crossing the street - not at the crosswalk- from the above mentioned restaurant to buy bagels from the bagel shop from across the street for my boss. (I know that's a terrible sentence.) My ticket cost more than I made in tips that day.
I too expect to see you quizbowl Straubs victorious.

On which day is Desmond's birthday?
Where did you replant the trees? Or did you? I was assuming that was what you used the nephew for.

Yes, where did your trees go? They showed up at 6:30 a.m. to make noise outside your window!!!! While robbing your trees?
lisa
Didn't they let you keep them? I'd be super pissed if they didn't. Didn't they say you have until some specified date to remove them by?
Monica
Pat, I loved that site. My favorite answer was "Here it is."

Joe, I want to keep these friends.

I like turnips. They are a lot like potatoes when you put them in soup and the greens are good in soups also.
Monica
I would suggest bacon. Mmmm. Brianne and Joe J - I am happy you guys aren't being laid off, but sorry to hear about your friends.
Us too. Grateful you are okay...sad for your friends.
That little ampersand likes to get in there every which way it can.
Pat, choose rutabagas! No, wasabi! no,acini de pepe! no, mahi mahi! no, snickerdoodles!
I've narrowed it down to poblano peppers, chocolate or key limes.
Yes, turnips are good, I don't think everyone loves them though....

emily what was the restaurant you worked at in SM?
First it was called Judi's deli. Then the restaurant was sold and the name was changed to Blue Plate. I am proud to say that I was one of only two front of the house employees the new owners kept.
That's where you got arrested for jaywalking, right?
Why do they call it jay walking?

Envying your historic adventure.

The ingredient I would suggest to compliment nutmeg would be either pumpkin or squash.
Have you heard that Morgan Freeman is dating his step granddaughter? Creepy!
I expect to see that the Straubs have beaten the Bertes this weekened! In fact I expect to see a trophy on the mantel when I get home.
I chose limes. Limes and Nutmeg are their ingredients.
P
Oooooooh, maybe you'll have margaritas!
or gin and tonics. or pie
or a fruit salad with a honey/lime dressing.

I think it's so funny they started this article with "Bummer"
Ellen, I would love to hire you as my private chef.

My computer is acting quirky. Things don't display right. I think Kim Jong Il is in my system trying to pirate my recipes.

My work computer went down today when I was on an embassy site. I have to have the tech guy come on Monday.
Of course I was on 25 other websites as well.

According to John Tesh, a new poll indicates that Librarians have the most stressful job in America.
Well, you know. All those books to read.
p
Ah, thanks for all the birthday wishes. And happy birthday to you, Ty.
Lobster Risotto was fantastic and went down well after the pepper infused vodka drinks. I have got to get that recipe, for the martinis, that is.
So, how'd quiz bowl turn out?
I heard the other teams cheated.
