It looks like you're shrinking. Is that your front door?

Have a great day! I hope it's nice weather.

I went to Star Trek. Or, rather, I went to SEE Star Trek this weekend at the Imax. It was awesome. Great fun.

I think Mia has Strep too, we're off to yet another Dr. appt. , and another tomorrow to follow up about the elbow. What next?

I had a GREAT MOTHER'S DAY weekend!
Desmond, Jen and Caitlin were here...we hit downtown Algona Friday night...Saturday night a GREAT dinner at Mom and Dad's and birthday cake for Lisa!! (followed by Whittemore fogs) Sunday morning brunch at Sr. Sarah's was delicious...and then the elegant graduation party for Joe4 (fabulous food!) then got into my car and at warp speed made it to the State 3 to see STAR TREK!!!
Fabulous weekend, (really missed Phelan!) Thumbs up for Star Trek...Iowa is in the movie!

Happy birthday, Lisa!

We all had birthday pie at Mom and Dad's but I think you should have your favorite kind of cake, whatever that is, this week.

We had all 3 cultured. All negative, although Eli is home sick with a fever and stuff. Donny (sick on Saturday)and Liam went off to school...they all had their uniforms on and backpacks with them.
Tom and Eli are sleeping right now together.

Yeah, i wasn't quite sure where in Iowa that was......it looked like the grand canyon.

There is a lot to be said for culture!

Mia doesn't have strep either, just a "viral infection". Her glands are swollen and she looks like she's hiding marbles in her neck.

Kirk is from Riverside, just South of Iowa City.

m.e. said...

Doesn't everyone know that James T.Kirk is from Iowa?? (I didn't 'till the movie, but Mike knew from the original series)

3 choices of birthday pie...who needs cake?

Anonymous said...

I'll take pie over cake any day.

Thanks to everyone for a great weekend in Algona! Jen had a great time meeting everyone...again. I think I'm still full.

A hospital in Australia declared a woman dead and told her family. But she wasn't!

"McKenna said a number of signs of life were absent when the doctor examined the woman and pronounced her dead, but it "appears the life signs returned several minutes after the doctor left the room."

I better be careful, I'm missing several life signs every day at work.

Is snoring considered a life sign?

Is it true that Mr. Whipple wipes out a bunch of Klingons on the cusp of a black hole?

I think that canyon in Future Iowa was supposed to be a stone quarry. (Transporters radically change the economy of commodities.) Maybe it's the one adjacent to the farm - we should explore.

By the way, anyone see the trailers for the new Transformers movie? Makes me wish I was a kid in the 80's.

The least plausible thing in the whole Star Trek movie (and that's saying something) was that there would be a Starfleet training/recruiting center in Iowa.
I liked all the casting. Some have griped that Scotty doesn't look at all like Scotty or that Sulu's too old, but I think that is outweighed by the funny fact that it's Harold from "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle." And could they have found a more Spockish Spock? Thumbs up. Can't wait till the next one.

Breaking News! They are now letting shoppers and employees back into Mall of the Bluffs after evacuating due to a sighting of a man with a gun. They also had nearby area schools on lockdown. It turns out he was just carrying an umbrella.

m.e. said...

I thought the casting was perfect..I think we should feel honored to have a Starfleet Training Center in Iowa...the wind turbines are gonna bring it all here!
The traffic cop was cool.

Was it Peter Sellers?

(pant, pant) I was the first responder on the scene. Five law enforcement agencies from surrounding areas were here too. (pant, pant) The suspect was easily overtaken, and the threat of violence stopped in it's tracks. Luckily there were no injuries here today.

That was no ordinary umbrella....

That "This day in history" story has a link to a list of manmade objects that have been left on the moon. We are lunar litterers! Also I didn't know that there is a piece of art on the moon that was made and left there simply to be a piece of art on the moon. Good job, whoever.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - An office worker cleaning a fridge full of rotten food created a smell so noxious that it sent seven co-workers to the hospital and made many others ill.

Firefighters had to evacuate the AT&T building in downtown San Jose on Tuesday after the fumes led someone to call 911. A hazmat team was called in.

What crews found was an unplugged refrigerator crammed with moldy food.

Authorities say an enterprising office worker had decided to clean it out, placing the food in a conference room while using two cleaning chemicals to scrub down the mess.

The mixture of old lunches and disinfectant caused 28 people to need treatment for vomiting and nausea.

Authorities say the worker who cleaned the fridge didn't need treatment — she can't smell because of allergies.

Ahh I just found giant mushrooms growing in my favorite house plant! They weren't there a few days ago. I've had this plant for four years and have become very attached to it. Let's hope it's able to pull through this tough time with some new soil and pot.

It also really grosses me out, but I know it's not that odd. Right? Ugh, I feel dirty even though it seems all I ever do with my life is clean! Has anyone gone mushroom hunting this year? I think this is the week for mushrooms around here. Rainy all week, then a nice warm weekend.

If you want a laugh go to you tube and search for "history of sparta by jc" and you'll see Joe4 and his friend Chris Schmidt winding down their class asssignments with a fly-by peice on Sparta. Have the sound up at the very beginning so you get the full effect of the massive opening.

I like how they brush up against the idea of man/boy relationships, but know not to go further. I also like the crying baby and running up the hill with Chris in his arms.

It sounds DELISH!!!!!

Specifically (Tom?) I just want to know if "en croute" means "wrapped in puff pastry" or should it be "en pate" or something like that. They're basically little Beef Wellingtons but we're calling them Beef Ballyshannon.

Stupid work computer! I have to wait to get home to play Joe4's video.

Mia's Dr. just called and she DOES have strep after all. The quick culture didn't catch it I guess. In other news, Oscar said Mama on Mother's day, and his first tooth is popping out.

Anonymous said...

poor Mia
Yea for Oscar!

Many thanks to all of you for your birthday wishes. I got sick after getting home and have neglected the Straubsblog. Sorry! Mia's news makes me think I may need a culture!

On my birthday we ate lunch at the bass pro shop restaurant. Very fun. Then went home for gifts and strawberry short cake. I got an outdoor thermometer and the last three Waterford iced beverage glasses we had neglected to buy (The price kept going up on them, but now that Waterford is in bankruptcy it seemed I should finish them out)and for Mother's Day a fireplace insert that I love and Randy doesn't. How nice to get it for me anyway.

Then off to Mom and Dad's for surprise birthday pie! Preceeded by pork loin and lots of salad with fresh chopped veggies. What a treat. Thanks to all, we had a great time. The next morning Dad treated us all to Mother's DAy brunch. Joe 4's graduation party was the only one I had ever seen with open bar!

Thanks again!

Lisa

It's Friday!! And, after this weekend the Obama/Notre Dame fury will have passed...
Joe4's Graduation Mass and awards ceremony was nice, both Dad and Joe4 were in the printed program because Dad was a Deacon at the Mass...afterwards everyone came over to our house for chicken and potato salad, thanks to Joe3 and thanks to Kelli for the wine!

em said...

I am ready for the ND/Obama fury to be over too. Yes, Obama's views on abortion are disappointing to say the least, but I still find Bush and his pack more morally reprehinsible.

Happy belated birthdays to Lisa and to Brian. Spring birthdays are the best!

ND students against Obama are planning a peaceful protest, and are expecting thousands, BUT the likes of Alan Keyes are stirring up other protesters...Alan Keyes was on campus with a group pushing baby carriages with bloodied dolls...they've been thrown off campus during the past week.
