Watched The Longest Movie - er, The Longest Day today while doing chores. Now Tora Tora Tora is on and a bunch of Offut AFB big planes just flew over to give me goosebumps. We'll have the Oscars on but I have to do homework. Maybe just the beginning, to see the clothes....
Josh's mom is down visiting. It's been a bit of an odd visit, as her mother died yesterday early morning. She flies out tomorrow. I'm not sure when Josh will go up, and if I'll be going or not.
Well, I'm skipping school today and hangin' out at the railroad tracks with my laptop. I'll show up later to hand out my big chocolate chip cookies in class. Tonight, we're going out to dinner and I requested strawberry shortcake for dessert...yum. My Birthday Party, with friends, is next Saturday. We're gonna go to a movie and come back for some wii and ice cream cake...then, a sleep over! I'm excited to be "double-digits!"
"Slumdog Millionaire" is a great movie!! It's here in Algona...I think it would be good for middle aged kids to see...so, the Straub clan of fifth graders (in my opinion) should see it, would open eyes up to how children of poverty live, etc...and about true love!!
I love Maya Angelou! I'm reading some of her stuff right now. Thought I would share it as most of you are avid readers and I thought you would enjoy. I find her writings inspirational. Here's another: "I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself."
P.S. Happy Birthday, Joe! :-) For your Birthday...take Monica out to dinner! :-)
Thanks...but, I thought yours was poetic rapture! :-) Mine made me chuckle. We were gonna go to the Bancroft Peanut Bar...but, Liam decided he wanted to stay home and order chinese. Love Sum Hing...thanks Liam! I think he wanted to stay home and open the gifts he rec'd, in the mail, as he was certain (and, correct!) that they were wii games! He had a nice Birthday and I will copy/paste the Birthday notes and share them with him tomorrow at breakfast. Thanks all! :-) Final quotes from Maya... "[My mother] said I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy. That some people, unable to go to school, were more educated and more intelligent than college professors." "Children's talent to endure stems from their ignorance of alternatives." ~Maya Angelou
Certainly, I didn't just "discover" Maya...however, I just began listening to her writings. :-) I like her. :-)
Joe J and I are heading to Chicago for furlough - check the blog this weekend for a sparking review of Phelan's band! We're visiting my family and the Straub contingent there. We're going to rent a car, so we'll have a fancy CD player for the trip. (Neither of our vehicles is reliable enough to make the trek.) Which leads us to this question, Maya: Will we get kicked out of book club for listening to the book on CD? Book club book is: "The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao" and it's apparently about an overweight Dominican from the New Jersey ghetto who's looking for love, despite some curse. A happy tale to shorten the miles, I'm sure!
I know the author of that book. I'll tell you more after you get back from your trip. Junot Diaz. He was a visiting writer for my program when I worked at hamline.
I never hear of this Maya Whatshername. But, I sometimes wonder if her name had been Betty Sue Blankenship would she have felt compelled to begin writing? Or would she have spent her days packing a lunch pail for her factory working husband?
liam, i love this photo. are you from heaven? brianne, i am so happy you are coming! you can shoot bottle rockets at us if you'd like.
oxoxox-phelan
also: those photos of G&G in florida when granny is wearing the red dress are so nice! they look like they were on their way to a formal dinner at the white house or the academy awards tho i'd rather go eat steak and radishes with michelle and arnold.
I'm just glad my name isn't Dolph Strauben lest I may have started my own secretive compound with gads of submissive women and men who would give me all their money. Hey, wait a minute. How much does it cost to change your name?
Maya was the poet laureate(sp) under Clinton, I remember her deep voice poetry at one of his outside venues, but I don't think it was his swearing-in ceremony.
Mickey Rourke - even if you got rid of his gold chains I can't imagine anyone wanna being like him.
They both have enought ghosts to keep them from being sissy-boys.
On another note: I have red dress envy. Not only do you have to have the dress, you have to have a place to wear it. Mom and Dad you looked mahhvelous!
Please keep in your thoughts a friend whose 8 year old grandson who was just in a semi/minivan collision. Things are not looking good for him. He's a sweet little boy who was in Peter's preschool class.
Pat, I'm sorry about Josh's grandmother. She was a great person with a lot of personality.
Josh, our deepest condolences on the loss of your grandmother. We are sorry for your loss. Your grandmother, you and your whole family will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Great photos of the birthday boys! Happy Birthday.
Maya Angelou spoke at Creighton my freshman year and I was too stupid to appreciate it. I saw her interviewed once and one thing she said has stuck with me and that is that when your children enter the room, your face should light up every time. I know some men may be rolling their eyes, but I think that bit of advice has helped me.
Joe and Brianne- have a safe trip to Chicago. DC is supposed to hit 50 tomorrrow! The other day some guys shoed up to repair a hole in the drywall in the bedroom closet. They didin't speak English too well though it was certainly better than my spanish. Anyway, while they were working I noticed Little Cat was missing and I was certain she hid in the hole in the wall swhen the strangers come. I was kind of frantic. "Donde es gatito?" I kept saying. And I made them look in the wall with a flashlight and Jude and I looked absolutely everywhere else. I mean everywhere - up on chairs on our h ands and knees. She was nowhere to be found. The space in the wall was pretty big and I wasn't sure how ra up or down it went. The guys worked for about and hour and a half then left. I fed the kids and continued searching for the cat. I was certain I was going to have to bust up the wall again. Then so very cavalierly (is that a word?) Little Cat wandered, yawning into the kitchen to eat. I am dying to know where she was hiding.
Thanks so much for your thoughts - I'll pass them on to josh and his mother. His grandma was great fun and, until about 3 years ago, a fabulous provider of authentic German food.
Monica I really hope the young boy is ok. Let us know.
It looks like Emily was typing while holding a squirrley toddler :)
Our vet started charging us $20 for just entering the office :( Last time I ever go there again....but it really will be the last, we'll find a new vet in Des Moines :) I've had the stomach bug that's going around. SInce I'm too achy to move, I feel emoticons are the best way to express how I feel. It doesn't work when you're with me though.
Last night Steve Jayjack & I met on the road near my home... he on his way to the store, me with babysitter in tow so that I could go back to work.
Steve was headed out to buy shrimp, cod fish or crab cakes and anything else fat tuesdayish he could find at 5:30 P.M. Mary told him to eat bugs!
So Jayjacks - what did you have last night? I had a Weight watchers smart ones at 9:30. It's hard to believe that was my day of excess - what do I do today to deprive myself? I felt deprived last night.
Last night we had pot roast with a crusted cod fillet and shrimp for starters. Cherry pie and really good vanilla ice cream for dessert (sorry Ellen). It was really stuff we kind of threw together, except for the pot roast which was planned. But we both stopped separately on the way home from work and picked up the other goodies. I think Maya Angelou's advice would work well for married couples too. New resolution.......
Smith Lake actually is well stocked. I take the kids out there for a fishing derby that stars Brian Thul (as president if the kiwanas) and some people are pulling out huge bass. There are always bucket loads of blue gills being caught.
Just ordered my tomato and pepper plants from Seed Saver's Exchange - all heirloom varieties. I'm so excited. In tomatos I ordered: Gold Medal (yellow pear), Brandywine, Amish Paste, Beam's Yellow, Cherokee Purple and Mexico Midget (they're SO CUTE) and in peppers I ordered: Buran(a Polish sweet red), Jimmy Nardello's (Sweet long Italian), Purple Beauty, Orange Bell, King of the North, and Wink's Yellow Hots. I'll have to pick up a jalapeno somewhere - Seed Savers has the seed but not the plants. Don't they sound summery and delicious?
Well, not so much since the big tree limb came down. And there's a corner behind the garage that gets about a half day of good sun. So it's a combination of putting them right in with the flowers and behind the garage. Tomato plants aren't pretty, but pepper plants aren't bad.
Today should be Fire Your School's Crappy Head Basketball Coach Day. Garrigan's team has decent talent. But it looks like all they practice is hitting 3s. I'm not kidding. No dribble-drive, no dump it inside then out, no post play, and worst of all no rebounding.
I wish I were a big donor to Garrigan. I would suggest a change.
Yes Cathy, Curley Girl is Catholic but since "all dogs go to heaven" I feel Ok letting her eat ham on Ash Wednesday. In fact she's a h ard working Catholic dog as she vigilant at yapping at the heels of the minister and members of the church next to our house!
Cathy or other gardeners: I need help. I really want to plant tomato plants this year. When is a suitable time? I know I want to do plants not seeds. I also want to do heirloom varieties. And maybe some cucumbers or peppers. Can we grow red peppers in MN?
I know I'm biased, but I agree with Tom's opinion of the B-Ball coach. In addition to wasting decent talent, he didn't play Joe4 the last 2 games. Joe has some skills, he started at least half the games, but hardly sniffed the court after having to go to Virginia to his grandma's funeral and missing a week of practice. First game back, West Bend, Joe gets in for maybe 1 minute at the end of the game along with the scrubs well after the game was over. West Bend lost but outrebounded BG by a wide margin. So Tuesday, Joe basically doesn't play and BG loses, getting killed on the boards against a team they should have easily beaten, North Iowa. NI had a 6-3 300 pounder who stood inside and probably scored 16 2nd half points when BG couldn't push him off the blocks. All his points were off offensive rebounds where he'd get fouled putting it back up. BG tried 3-4 guys on him and they couldn't budge him. Joe didn't see the court until the game was out of reach in the 2nd overtime (got BG's last points of the season on a nice 15 foot baseline jumper). One thing Joe can do is box out. He's successfully taken Eagle Grove's 6-6 Yackle (#3 rebounder in the state, all classes) out of the paint in a prior game as well as 6-10 Collison from Iowa Falls, as well as any number of other posts. There's no doubt whatsoever he would have moved this guy off the blocks. For the heck of it, I reviewed the disk of the BG-NI football game from last fall. Joe and this guy were lined up on each other all night and Joe pushed him all over the field all night long. So, thanks to BG's idiot coach, they lose, the season's over, the seniors are done with basketball forever. In the lockerroom afterwards the coach was complaining about getting out-rebounded. OK, sorry about the rant.
Rant, Joe. It is well deserved. After four years of not bragging about your kid, you are entitled to this. I believe this guy and the baseball coach are of the same simple mind set.
Anyway - on to my kids. Their last acting class of the season is Saturday (thank goodness. I am tired of getting up at 7:15 on Saturday mornings - I want to sleep until 8!) They have a tiny bit of a show at the end. Last year Mary was the troll princess. Is that an oxymoron? I can't wait to see what she is this year.
Emily you should be able to plant all of those. Just make sure they get 6-7 hours of sun a day. You can plant them after the last frost. Most weathermen usually announce when that is. For you I would guess mid-May. You can stake cucumbers if you don't have room. Buy a large tomato cage for it.
We had freezing rain and now the temp is dropping, so we have ice covered everything!! School and all activities are cancelled...as always I think "they" over react, but what do I know. Maybe the BB coach is in charge.
What's wrong with the coach? Was he ticked that Joe went to his grandmother's funeral? I guess you can't ask these things without coming off as an annoying parent. Thanks for the advice MOnica. But maybe you'd just better come up to MN and help me- the novice gardener who will be ready to go into labor at that time of year. Poor me.
We just got back from storytime at the Arlington LIbrary which is three blocks away and I wasn't paying attention when we walked out and we walked the wrong way and kinda got lost. On the upside I found a grocery store that is twice as close as the one I'd been going to. It's 55, sunny but windy. Really quite nice. We saw some flowers blooming and Jude had to smell them. He said we shoudl move here because it's still too cold for flowers in MN. It's supposed to get back down to the 30s tomorrow though.
Little snow flurries flying.....do I call off First Communion prep for Saturday AM (because I'm not ready and will be here till 9:00 if I don't) with 4" predicted? I wish it was 8", then I'd do it.
Don't you have a fish fry to go to tonight? Someone (graciously) gave us tickets to the Kiwanis fish fry tonight at the Methodist church, I am pretty certain there will be NO BEER! I remember the Omaha fish fry's at the Catholic churches...some would bring free beer while you waited in line!!
We have these stupid free tickets for the Methodist fish...maybe I should have given them to Dan McCall as a closing gift! How much is you sprimp special?
On behalf of my generation I would like to apologize to the future generations for the way Obama is pimping you out. I'm sorry for the trillions of dollars he is going to make you pay back just so we can have it easier and he maybe can get re-elected. I'm sorry.
Em, around here we never EVER plant until after Mother's Day, even if it's been nice for three weeks. If you only have a limited amount of space that gets sun most of the day, plant the tallest plants at the back (north) side of the plot and the shortest at the front (south). Tomatoes are tallest, then peppers or cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers spread out low to the ground on vines.

The Hideout is a destination venue – tucked back in an industrial section of the city, it looks like a ramshackle house, except for an Old Style sign hanging over the front stoop. Friday night’s crowd wore appropriately ironic hipster ensembles: A sequined flapper dress, a neon orange and camo coat, peacock feathers, ridiculous facial hair. Bird Names played with energy, bantered familiarly with the crowd, and – to this writer’s delight – employed the use of what sounded like galloping castanets. It was a rollicking act, followed by a guy who looked like he was wearing an outfit stolen from the Star Trek Enterprise. Even the mounted fish on the wood-paneled walls looked like they had a good time.

Happy b-days to Joe and Liam, what are you doing to celebrate?
That's 2 goodlooking birthday boys there. One looks very trustworthy. Have a great Birthday!

What's with Johns Hopkins' plural name? What's the deal? The story doesn't say.
happy birthday, gents. eat a steak and a cake.
Happy Birthday Joe and Liam! Excellent photos. Hope you celebrate in style.

Oily rags and a book of matches is usually a good mix for some birthday fun.
I agree. Oily rags and a book of matches can make for a lot of fun.
Well - the owner of my apartment is coming back since she lost her job so that means I am getting kicked out.
Here is the place I will be moving into come April:

Why is Maya Angelou on here, and what is her quote all about?

happy birthday, joe and liam!

"Determine to live life with flair and laughter."
Hey Maya...
If people forget what you say, I would say you don't have much flair or laughter!
(how does that make you feel?)
Happy Birthday Joe K.
Go to B.K. and have it your way!
Happy Birthday Liam!

"Slumdog Millionaire" is a great movie!! It's here in Algona...I think it would be good for middle aged kids to see...so, the Straub clan of fifth graders (in my opinion) should see it, would open eyes up to how children of poverty live, etc...and about true love!!
middle aged kids=middle school kids!!
I saw Milk last night. Thought it was good.

I love Maya Angelou! I'm reading some of her stuff right now. Thought I would share it as most of you are avid readers and I thought you would enjoy. I find her writings inspirational.
Here's another:
"I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself."
P.S. Happy Birthday, Joe! :-) For your Birthday...take Monica out to dinner! :-)
"Sean Penn is definitely someone who got better with age."
Was that another Maya quote?
p
Ha! I was gonna say that Maya said it! :-)
She would it say it like this:
"Life, in its mysteries, stuns us in Sean Penn; an intensifying beauty and erotic gravitas."
Now you try.
p
Sean Penn is a Mickey Rourke wannabe.
Happy birthday Joe k and Liam!
Enjoy your days.
"I forget what Sean said, I forget what Sean did, but, I will always remember how he made me feel."
That's good nance. Better than mine. I was at work and had to shut down quick when someone came up to my desk.

She was born Marguarite Ann Johnson and has had different names including Rita Johnson.

Liam, it sounds like you have a birthday week planned. Joe what did you do?

Ha! I was going to say Mickey is a Sean wannabe but m.e. beat me to it. In terms of personal behavior they're both aiming too low.
Ed that place looks beautiful. You are so urban cool.
What if Maya Angelou's name had been Vesto Melvin Slipher?
Break a leg, Phelan! Wish we could come.
One more weather class to go - woo-hoo! Barring some last-minute disaster I'm getting an A. Forecast: sunny and bright.
Please keep in your thoughts a friend whose 8 year old grandson who was just in a semi/minivan collision. Things are not looking good for him. He's a sweet little boy who was in Peter's preschool class.

Josh, our deepest condolences on the loss of your grandmother. We are sorry for your loss. Your grandmother, you and your whole family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Yes.

Joe Biden was just on TV for the announcement of the new Commerce Sec. and he was wearing ashes from Ash Wednesday Mass. I thought that was cool.

Who got ashes already? What are you doing for Lent?
I have my ashes. I'm giving up meat and cleaning a closet a week.
Monica
Monica what's the status of the little boy?
p
Forecast for the burial tomorrow:
Up to 8 inches of snow, gusts up to 28 mph, high temp of 17.
Fun.

Mike and I are giving up beef and pork and lamb...I wanted to give up all meat but he didn't...so, I guess not giving up chicken is my sacrifice.
I just had a nice tuna sandwich...Curly girl had ham.

Great in sushi rolls.
Mike is teaching physics to the AHS Bulldogs...
The GHS BB coach needs some physics teachin!
Mary what do you mean?
So, Pete and Mely are at mom and dad's now. Josh and I will see them Sunday. Looking forward to it.
p
It means that blue gill sushi rolls are great!
Also, the GHS BB coach was AWFUL last night and Garrigan lost in double overtime to a bad team and now the season is over!
Monica, you're giving up cleaning closets? I give that up all year.
Isn't Curley Catholic?
The Obamas have chosen a dog! A portugese water dog. The girls wanted to neme it "Frank" and Michelle nixed it. What the heck?
I'm sure she's afraid someone named Frank will be offended. Frank, would you be offended?
I hope Pete and Mely are having fun.
Monica

Did the coach express to Joe4 anything about him being gone? What's his problem? He wouldn't happen to also be the guidance counselor, would he?
Emily you should be able to plant all of those. Just make sure they get 6-7 hours of sun a day. You can plant them after the last frost. Most weathermen usually announce when that is. For you I would guess mid-May. You can stake cucumbers if you don't have room. Buy a large tomato cage for it.
We are having a thunder storm right now.

It's cool he got the last points of the season. Stuff that in your pipe and smoke it, coach.
We had freezing rain and now the temp is dropping, so we have ice covered everything!! School and all activities are cancelled...as always I think "they" over react, but what do I know. Maybe the BB coach is in charge.
we currently have rain, changing to freezing rain, then snow. and i'm going drinking tonight.
Take a cab.
Also take a merlot or pinot noir.
i walked. it was less than a half mile away. and i took a red blend.
We are having an all-you-can-eat shrimp special.
We have these stupid free tickets for the Methodist fish...maybe I should have given them to Dan McCall as a closing gift! How much is you sprimp special?
$12.95 and we serve beer!
Now they're saying up to 5"...keep it up!
Can you trust a fish fry to be good when it begins at 4:30 and ends at 7?
I wonde what Pete and Mely and Mom and Dad are doing...probably at the beach.....it's REALLY cold here!!!
We're going to go to Grinnell tomorrow to watch Phelan perform!!
Frank, Brianne, Joe J. and Ed are all getting together tonight in Chicago, they'll see Phelan's band tonight!
Desmond won't be there, he's been in SanFrancisco for 2 weeks shooting a commercial for DOCKERS!
On behalf of my generation I would like to apologize to the future generations for the way Obama is pimping you out. I'm sorry for the trillions of dollars he is going to make you pay back just so we can have it easier and he maybe can get re-elected. I'm sorry.
Tom
Just think, when you're a 97-year-old curmudgeon you can say, "I warned'em!"
We changed our all-you-can-eat shrimp price to $11.95.
So how was Phelan's show? That sounds like so much fun. I'd been hoping her band would travel this far south, or close, on their tour.
P
it was a good show. they played 1 set (1 of 3 bands that night). i'd never heard Phelan sing except for at a wedding. she's got a great voice.
BIRD NAMES PLAYS SOLDOUT SHOW AT THE HIDEOUT
By Brianne Sanchez
TimeOut Chicago Staff Writer Wannabe
